While visiting Memphis for the St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend, I was looking for a local spot to…read moregrab a few extra carbs for the race. The front desk at the hotel recommended this spot, and I couldn't be happier with their recommendation. Cocozza sits on the far end of a strip mall, but has adequate parking in the front, and additional in the rear of the property. Visiting on a Friday evening, there was a small wait and all seats were full. However, I was able to find a vacant bar seat. Steven made a great gin martini, and fave me the rundown on the menu. I decided to start with a Caesar salad, followed by Bucatini Alla Enzo for the entree. Until today, I hadn't had the pleasure of trying bucatini, but this unique pasta might just be my new favorite. It was just the right portion of pasta with a wonderful garlic sauce accompanied by fresh mushrooms and peas. I grabbed a piece of lemon cheesecake to-go, and gave my seat to a waiting patron. As I visit Memphis often, I am really looking forward to visiting Cocozza again to try other items on the menu. Great service! Great spot! Great food.

I took the advice, and I'm really glad I did. It was fantastic--stacked with pulled pork, smoked sausage, and beef brisket, all topped with slaw and BBQ sauce on a bun. I also tried a bite of the barbecue bologna, which is a thick-cut slice served on white bread, and that didn't disappoint either. Inside gets pretty smoky, so you'll probably prefer sitting outside. Luckily, there are plenty of picnic tables and seating areas to choose from. I didn't catch the name of the guy who helped me, but he was friendly, energetic, and made the whole experience even better. Overall, a really enjoyable visit.

If you like fancy pizza, this place is for you. Walking in,…read moreit looks very modern. You know, the plain type. The type that does look good, but barely has decor. We came at lunch right when they opened with no reservation, which was fine. There was plenty of seating but it did get a little busier by the time we left. The hostess and our waitress were very nice and attentive. This place is NOT kid friendly. Which is fine... not everyplace has to be kid friendly. I just want parents to know up front that they do not have a kids menu. I asked what kid friendly options there were and our waitress suggested a few, but we decided on just a cheese pizza. This was for my 3 year old and he did not eat it, but neither did my other 2 kids (ages 7 and 11) when we brought it home. It had no seasoning and a very tomato taste. We got the poutine as an appetizer. I forgot a picture of it. My husband has had this before in Canada and he loved it. However, this one wasn't up to par. He enjoyed it, but said an authentic one is much better. I personally couldn't eat it. The gravy was just too weird. As a main course, I had the "Mikey Likes It" pizza. It was good if you like basil. It was very heavy on the basil. It was a bit burnt though. My husband had the special which was a chopped cheese. He said it was good, but nothing to brag about. I'm not a sauerkraut fan, the bite I had was good, but I wouldn't have been able to eat all of it. The fries as a side were good and crunchy. Overall, we probably won't be back. It's just not our style. Not our type of "fancy" food. This is one of those "mark of I've been there" things. Give it a try for yourself because it's not terrible.

I haven't had the best of luck with Chinese food in Memphis so I did everything I could to suppress this unwanted craving, however, I just couldn't help myself. Little Petals pops up on Yelp as a possibility. I read the reviews and scrolled through the pictures. After looking at the location, I realized it was only an 8-minute drive from where we were. Why not, right? The restaurant is easy to miss. It sits right on the corner in an old shanty building nestled in the middle of downtown Memphis. The furniture and décor were of a standard Chinese eatery, nothing special; but the employees were warm and welcoming, greeting me with hellos and smiles. I got the black pepper chicken that came with a spring roll. I ordered an extra side of pork egg rolls because that's usually my go to. Everything was fantastic! It gives you the taste of that old school Chinese food you used to have as a kid, but better quality. The chicken was moist, flavorful and peppery. The egg rolls had the perfect amount of crispy crunch---they seemed handmade as well! Pricing is a little higher from when I was a kid, but you still won't break the bank here! As I started to think that great Chinese food was not an option for Memphis, Little Petals showed up at the right time and made me a believer!

So, Little Petals, i.e., Petals of a Peony, Jr.: no one was inside. I assume this to be per usual for 2:30pm on a Tuesday. It follows then, that the service was, um, efficient and bespoke. Ordered the pork eggrolls (very good, the sauce that came with it - oddly the perfect amount was given in a little rectangular container - made these delectable) and the General Peony's Chicken. And this was damned good. Pricey for lunch, but I could have made 2 or 3 meals off of it. A satisfying amount of heat from the szcheuan (sp?) peppers; not overly breaded so as to make it a fried dough dish, but rather to carry the sauce on the chicken; the chicken was a quality cut, nicely sized per bite. A new go-to for lunch downtown.

My burger arrived cold, the Texas toast was not toasted, cheese was cold, some grilled onion, no jalapeños. The fries were cold and limp. The smash burger was good. We sent the fries and Texas toast burger back. They brought a new basket of fries which were warm and crispy (much better). The toast on the burger was brought back toasted but there was still no jalapeños. They took it back again and put lots of cold jalapeños on it. It was horrible, sent it back and did not want replacement. They did take it off the bill. The service was extremely slow. Needless to say I will not go back to that location. I have recently eaten at the Hueys in Germantown and it was excellent.
