TLDR: loyal customer highly recommend. I've been shopping at the Berlin price chopper for over 2 decades. i also shop at the nearby Shaws and Hannafords. I prefer the Price Chopper. The store layout works for the way I shop. sometimes walking every isle to see what I cannot live without and sometimes going to specific items and leaving. I've been there most hours they are open ( variable work schedule ) There are occasions when there are long queues for the registers but they are, in my experience, infrequent and short duration. The staff is a mix of long time employees and recent additions to the staff. Everyone is helpful and pleasant when I encounter them. I even see some of the staff outside of work ( with their families at local events or dining out etc ) Sometimes price labels on the shelves are not updated properly resulting in items appearing on sale when they no longer are. pronging this to the attention of staff after checkout always results in confirming the shelf label and honoring the price ( issuing a refund ) for my transaction. parking is rarely a problem as the lot is kept reasonably clean and clear of snow in winter. read more

I love Price Chopper. This is a fairly new "Super Center" store. The big box with all the specialty departments: Seafood, deli, meat butcher shop, cheese, wine, pharmacy. You get the idea. Produce is fresh and always being stocked. Prices are decent, and better than the competition, Shaw's. The only drawback is that it is out of downtown Barre and Montpelier. Kind of stuck in between, so it is not too convenient for a grab and go. Located on the Barre-Montpelier Road in the old Ames Plaza. (Route 302). read more

The local area Price Chopper is always a great place to shop. The deals are always excellent. The staff is super nice and the store layout is well organized and a pleasure to look at. I always love their sushi bar! It is fresh and AH-Mazing!! If you get there early you can watch the chef prepare it fresh. They have so many rolls and combinations, it is hands down the areas best.... And I'm not just saying that, because trust me, I'm a picky sushi connoisseur! The hot bar is also the best, because the soup combinations and choices are usually awesome... Lobster Bisque being my fave! Just be careful with the soup lids because they don't always close too tight (ouch - I've gotten burned once, hence only 4 stars). Sometimes the fried chicken at the hot bar is dried out, and I just can't deal with that! OH NO...Don't mess with my chicken!! Then the selections at the deli are awesome, but mostly pastas... They need to work on that, but they do have some higher end gourmet soups and quality microwaveable meals which are hearty and delicious, but a little pricey... And...(drumroll please) STARBUCKS! I normally shop at the Berlin Price Chopper on Saturday, the day before the new sales start. The current sale items are never displayed as they are too busy setting up for the new weeks sales. I miss half of what was on sale! It also seems to be the day to stock shelves (one of the busiest days of the week), You have to work around the big crates of boxes to be put on the shelves in addition to the people stocking shelves and all the people shopping. I often times get home with half of what I needed because I wasn't able to see around the boxes or I had to move quickly through the isles because it was so congested! It's not a good shopping experience at all. I think it's time to try another grocery store. What happened to the days when the shelves were stocked at night?????? Is it just me that is seeing this and feeling overwhelmed??? read more

The Price chopper has always been good to me and others.. However last week When I was cashing out the machine declined my card three times. I was upset because i knew there was over 1700.00 in there. I was asked to go to the ATM and pull out the money myself. Against my better judgement, I did. At a 2.50 fee. I was then ushered over to a different check out and I payed cash. When I asked about the fee, I was told it wasn't there problem. My boyfriend and I not longer shop here because the customer service has been consistently sub-par. The customer service manager either a) doesn't give a crap that her employees are useless or b) is mandated to follow an extremely horrible training program for new employees. Me thinks it's probably "a". It's really too bad, because my boyfriend and I used to spend $80+ a week here. Lackadaisical attitude.Terrible work ethic. Understaffed. Some excellent sale prices. Don't shop here if you are in a hurry. Expect long lines and long delays. Cashiers move like cold molasses running uphill in January. And don't expect help on the floor. Clerks and stockers run if you even appear to be inquisitive. I suspect it's their way of trying to get back at soulless management. I have been a loyal customer for decades, but I am baffled by some staff behavior during the COVID-19 crisis. This morning, during senior hour (6-7) two staff members were working without masks and a third had hers pulled down on her face. This is not the first time I've observed similar behavior. A couple weeks ago I talked to the store manager who assured me they take regulations seriously. He said he'd view their internal video recordings for the time in question. Yet today the same person was working without a mask. I guess I'll have to switch to another grocery store and hope for better compliance there. This virus is not a joke. It killed a friend of mine in this state. Masks are required for a very good reason -- to protect others. read more

Try finding a clerk if you have questions...and, if you do, s/he is probably brand new and doesn't know anything and gives the look like your pants just fell off...never enough staff at the front end...expect to bag your own groceries....when I worked in the grocery stores, we always thanked the customer.."Thanks for shopping. Come again"....now it's the tired, old "have a nice day" I hear that one more time I'm gonna puke...the mgmt. is obviously absent...the store runs itself..and very poorly I might add...I refuse to shop there.....Try Hannafords in S.Barre for a pleasant shopping experience. read more

Well, they have been done with the renovations for a couple months, and it was a huge improvement. They do have the best, freshest flowers and now have a large cheese and deli section. Produce dept is expanded, but I still go there and often can not find items on my list. read more

Store is always understaffed on the front end. You wait as long in line for a cashier as you do shopping the entire store. You can tell the staff is pushed to work nonstop as they'll practically run you down if you're in their way. read more

This store did not impress us at all. The fact that they allow small dogs in & persons with no shoes are absolute health violations. In the end we bagged our own groceries & we needed a "Special Card" to receive sale prices. We spent over $200.00. :( read more

I've been shopping at this Price Chopper for more than 30 years and I can't believe how my husband was treated when he took three large packages of veal back because they were rotten!! We just bought them yesterday and no we didn't have our receipt however; the Price Chopper stickers were on all three packages of the rotten meat they sold us. Today is Oct 4th and the good to sell by date on the package is Oct 5th. I opened only one package and vomited because the rancid smell was so bad and then when my husband takes the meat back, customer service says they can only give him a gift card for the amount!! We paid on our bank's debit card and because we are long time customers we have their advantage card so, they keep track of your purchases on that so, there shouldn't be an issue with a refund! This particular store has been going down hill on product that they offer as well as the customer service. I can never find truly fresh vegetables. you have to check every single one and then pick the best of the worst. Cucumbers and tomatoes come to mind. Forget purchasing Onions whether the 2 lb or the 5 lb bags because you can't get beyond the little bugs flying around to see what might be okay to purchase. I only gave this store a 1 star rating because you have to give a star in order to get your opinion published however; I believe that the rating system needs to add negative numbers/stars because this store has gotten so bad I would give it minus 5 stars!! read more

Every Friday, I go shopping with a man who has autism. It takes him a bit of time to make up his mind what he wants to get and the only place where we have had any issue is in the deli department. The past two weeks, we have arrived there around 5:45 p.m. - two weeks ago, all of the sides were taken care of and when I asked if they were still available, the clerk, Benjamin, said "We have put them away, but I guess if you want something, I can get it". I then asked him when the deli closed and he replied that was open until 8 p.m. Last week, we shopped there again and we arrived about 5:35 p.m, Benjamin again waited on us and even though the sides were out for people to choose from, he acted like we were really inconveniencing him with our orders. He is the only individual in that department who acts indifferent when waiting on us. Having worked for Price Chopper for 10 years on the Front End, I know that that is not the atmosphere that the company wants to have shown. It doesn't take a lot to be friendly and to treat people with respect and tolerance. I will say, though, that the overall feeling in that store is one of sullenness the majority of times that we shop there. The people on EZ Scan spend minutes chatting with other staff members or friends while people wait for them to clear their machines, there are not a lot of smiles on the majority of employees faces, and the atmosphere is bleak.
