This is a special occasion type place and also perfect for a romantic night out. When you walk in you're greeted by a cosy area by the fire. You can sit on one of three large leather sofas or stand by the bar. You're quickly offered drinks & left to review the menu with complimentary olives & croutons. When your meal is ready your waiter takes your drinks on a silver platter & guides you to your table. Usually the cost is fairly high, however, they have some amazing deals on at the moment (Mar 10). Two courses for around £20 & three for £25 if my memory serves me. This is amazingly good value for the quality of the meals & the experience you'll have.

I love the nooks and crannies of the old wattle & daub building. The focus is fish and seafood which is fresh and thus, a significant portion of the menu changes daily. Most of the fresh fish is caught off Cornwall, although fish such as salmon is likely to come from Scotland. Vegetarians are not after-thoughts though....Roast Pumpkin and Chestnut Mushroom Tagliatelle with Sage and Parmesan does it for me! My son's favourite starter is the Twice Baked Oxford Blue Cheese Soufflé. In winter, a roaring fire sets the cosy tone as guests sink into huge, comfy leather sofas. Menus and drinks are served promptly....we usually opt for glass of sublime champagne while trying to make our minds up. A conservatory wraps round the back of the restaurant is kept cosy during winter, offers equal summer enjoyment. Great wine list, impressive casks of ales for beer connoisseurs, single malts, friendly, well-trained staff make this restaurant a cut above many others around here.

You can even pull up your boat at the moorings in the small marina. On a nice sunny day the outdoor lifestyle comes into its own with also plenty of space for a child to get up to mischief, all under supervision of course. Indoor seating is slightly less abundant than that of outdoors but is clean, well laid out and flood with natural light. My favourite local place to take a lunch, the food is light and nothing too overbearing. Wine by the glass is a much loved service as well, speaking as a better standard of café. The only detraction would be that it is highly overpriced for the food. You can easily spend more than you would for an evening meal whilst you enjoy a sun drenched riverside lunch. For example, the 'pizza' is a half baked baguette melted with cheese. They of course have a slightly higher standard of topping such as red onion jelly and goats cheese. Still, it is essentially an oven ready bread with cheese. For the fifth star the price either must plummet or the standard of food on service must improve. I would break down my rating as three for the location and up a notch for serving Sauvignon Blanc by the large glass.

I had the eggs benedict which was very good but a big plateful. My guest had the vegetarian breakfast which went down very well. We sat in the conservatory which was warm and filled with light, albeit a little rustic in comparison to the setup and furniture in the main cafe. Criticisms: it's a bit of a bunfight to get served at busy times. You have to order and pay for your food at the desk first, and it's a bit disorganised and slow. You think you're next in the queue and then you find you're not. There is no shortage of staff but there's no real system for serving people. The tables are bare so you have to obtain your own condiments and cutlery. The mayonnaise had to be requested especially as it wasn't with the others (presumably as it's in the fridge). The tables weren't cleared quickly enough between diners. Despite this it's still worth 4 stars and I'll definitely be back.

If I think of my English childhood, more than fifty years ago, this is how I remember the countryside although I suspect that nostalgia, distance and time have let me see my memories through rose colored glasses! Even so, I remember February almost anywhere in England as horrible and most English food from that time being either mediocre or downright terrible so perhaps i can be objective after all. The Quince Tree is new and it's a pub, restaurant, coffee shop and deli in a village that's so small that there are no street addresses that I could find. My eldest son and his family live about a mile away and this trip was to stay with them etc.etc. Anyway, I had two meals at The Quince Tree, during my visit, one for breakfast in the coffee shop and one for dinner. The former was simply a ham and egg croissant plus a reasonably good cup of coffee. This isn't much to judge a restaurant on but I really couldn't fault it; certainly the coffee could have been better but that's true of everywhere I've been in England. The staff are all young, welcoming and seem to be chosen, in part, for their looks. The buildings are light and airy - I didn't go into the pub, and very nicely finished. This goes for the bathroom too. I arrived about twenty minutes after the deli had closed one evening to buy a loaf of bread and they happily opened up to serve me. This isn't all that common in England. Dinner, or "the last supper", on my final night was really great. There seems to be a trend away from elaborate contrived meals, no matter how good they are, back towards more simple meals, often using less common and cheaper cuts of meat, For instance, I had a braised shin of beef, L. had a grilled filet of brill ( a bit like sole) and J. had a stuffed shoulder of lamb . A week later, I can't remember what we started with except that it was all beautifully done. Simple food and reasonably well priced (although the deli is expensive and quite small). Worth a trip!
