I guess the official reopening is September 22, 2018, so I guess the NCRB has soft opened since…read moreLabor Day weekend. I'm an incoming grad student who has never been to UM, so I'm not sure what the NCRB used to look like. But the renovated NCRB does look brand new. The entire gym is air-conditioned, unlike the CCRB. Also unlike the CCRB, I like how the free lockers are keyless and require a keypad entry, so that means no need to carry a key while working out. Some of the free lockers are more spacious than CCRB's, too. My only problem is if you're a grad student, it seems like there are a bunch of undergrads/freshmen who work out there that don't know proper manners lol. A general problem I have regardless if you're a grad student is about the indoor track. There are no rules designating which way to run and where on the track to walk/run if going a certain speed. It's a lot narrower than the CCRB's indoor track, too, so a collision of runners running in opposite directions passing a walker is bound to happen. I also don't like where some of the equipment is placed on the outskirts of the indoor track. The outskirts of the indoor track may be the only place where people can jump rope. Because of how narrow the track is, I'm worried that a jump rope might hit me. I also find the ellipticals and rowing machines in the corners are oddly placed. Is there really not enough room? There are plenty of ellipticals in the cardio room across the entrance of the indoor track. Or maybe the NCRB is anticipating itself to be overcrowded with people. I am sad that there are only two rowing machines in the whole gym that I saw, which are a little too close together, imo. They couldn't have been placed where it's more spacious and where the other cardio machines are at?

NCRB, as is the case with all of UM's gyms, is outdated…read more It has all the basics you need, it's just not pretty (or clean). You have to pay for towel service. To clean the equipment, you windex a nasty communal rag then wipe down the bench.

Hip hip hooray!…read more West Park is not only back open, but really spiffed up and improved. It was a perfectly nice park before, but it was always pretty discouraging that the old amphitheatre was so neglected and inactive. Up until several weeks ago, the only show I had ever seen there was guerilla-style, when some WCBN folks decided to do a somewhat impromptu acoustic performance for a handful of black-t-shirted-listeners. I'm thrilled, however, to report that the amphitheatre has been polished up and its seating vastly improved. There's now a stepped area in front of the stage, which allows families and folks with lawn chairs and dogs to stake out a listening spot while not really blocking anyone else's view/listing enjoyment. There aren't many performances yet, but I am feeling hopeful. The last several Wednesday evenings, strains of the civic band have enticed us to join the crowd. The overall landscape of the park has been revamped as well. My understanding is that the previous layout would often flood or get muddy because of the nature of the (mostly) underground Allen Creek. Now there are wetland areas as well as a small pond with a boardwalk. It's strange how so much change could make a park feel like it "fits" better into the land, but that's exactly how it feels to me. Edible Avalon is also nurturing a large community garden in some of the previously unused space near the basketball court. I'm grateful to have a greenspace like this so close to home.

This is a great old park, old but now renewed. First time I went here was in summer of '67 or '68…read moreand who was there but Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead. I will try to upload a photo from then. It is not mine; I downloaded it from The Grateful Dead archives on line. It is a photo by Tom Copi. Thank you, Tom, all credit is yours, but this is how it looked. We were so much younger then; we're older than that now.
