Maumee Bay State Park is arguably the Crown Jewell of Ohio State Parks. What might be more delightful than lunch at Water's Edge. We observed years ago that the restaurant should have been developed as a second floor property to properly view Lake Erie. Let's hope that renovations are in order... Soon. Meanwhile a first rate decorator may do wonders with this restaurant. The Lodge and State Park merit multiple visits. Caveat: Lodge is recommended over cabins - Actual Lake Erie views. Several years ago, our Scottish Terrier accompanied us to a cabin, and found mice is walls - she kept us up all night. Very nice Visitor Center with plenty of parking and the starting point for a well designed & maintained boardwalk. Inside Visitor Center were displays & hand-on exhibits for young & old alike. Friendly Staff made it a great stop with clean restrooms. I loved the viewing area of feeders in the back of Center with lots of visiting local wildlife. What a gem of a park! The whole place has a ton to offer from a scottish link golf course to swimming, paddle boats, trails, bird watching and so much more! We had a blast. 10 of us slept comfortably in a cabin with easy access to kayak the inside pond. The furnishings are a bit worn and dated, but sure beat tent camping!!!! read more

This is a well-kept park with many attractions. My wife and I met some family here for a few days of camping--very hot days, above or near 90 each afternoon. Our site didn't have much shade, which made things quite hot from late morning on--fortunately we could hang out with family camped on shadier sites. When you reserve, look at the site photos very carefully if shade is important to you. The camping areas generally aren't heavily wooded--the vibe is more suburban than rustic. Our site looked out onto a large meadow with a pond in it which gave us a great vantage point for birdwatching. In the evening, we saw a few skunks out prowling along the path to the bathhouse and behind our camps. No spray incidents, but keep a watch out if you're moving around near or after dark. Campground was very quiet throughout the day, though we were there early in the week--Friday/Saturday might be different. There is a hotel along the beach, as well as cabins for rent that could house families. We explored several of the bike trails--a few could use repaving, though they were smooth for the most part, even where showing signs of wear. The trails led us past nice views of the lake and through some wooded sections were we saw quite a few deer. There is also golf (real and frisbee), nature trails, fishing ponds, and a boat launch (onto Lake Erie) here. Bathouses were clean. It was easy to set a comforable temperature for shower water. The camp store had a nice selection snacks, staples like hot dogs/bread/ice, and some souvenirs. The staff there were friendly, as were all the park personell we interacted with. Overall a good rendition of a resort-style state park. read more

This is an excellent campground! The sites are a decent size, plenty of room for our class C RV, my sisters tent and the 12.5 foot shelter from the mosquito population. The washrooms were really clean, nicely maintained, and quiet times were enforced. I do wish that drivers in the park would adhere to the speed limits and slow the eff down!! Our stay at the Maumee Bay campgrounds was very brief. On a roadtrip and car camping, we pulled in after dark and left first thing in the morning. The only complaint I could find is that the campsites are not very private. Otherwise, it's a beautiful, clean park with well kept facilities. We were really pleased to discover they have "family bathrooms" available that are heated and include a shower. This made getting cleaned up in the morning much easier and pleasant, with the cool weather, for my partner and I. read more

Awesome parking. It is well laid out and lots to do. They have camping, cabins, and a lodge for overnight options. There is a marina so you can visit by boat. Plenty of parking around the park. They have a beach on the lake side that is well maintained. Swimming pond, storybook trail, courts for basketball and tennis. Lots of fishing and bird watching opportunities. The nature center is really great with animals and displays. Staff is really informative when asking questions. Plenty of hiking and biking trails. Several playgrounds for kids. First, I need to say that I grew up on Lake Erie. I've visited several points of it along the American side, all the way from Buffalo to, well, Maumee Bay. That being said, I get to say bad things about it. I will always have love for Lake Erie, but there's no denying that it's gross. It's a gross lake! Possibly the grossest of all the Great Lakes, though Ontario isn't far behind. The water is polluted, brown, diseased, and often just doesn't smell right. Fish carcasses can be found all up and down the shore, far more than can be considered "normal." The beaches themselves often aren't very sandy, they're more rocky and hostile to bare feet. Almost every beach on the American side of Lake Erie (including the one at Maumee Bay) features scenic views of factories, power plants, and other industrial buildings. ALL that being said, Maumee Bay State Park is a pretty nice place, all things considered. There's plenty of space, green grass for kids to run around on, volleyball nets, playgrounds, and fairly clean bathrooms and other facilities. If you need a beach to hang around on a hot summer day and Lake Erie is your only option, this is one of the better options to make a day out of. read more

The rest of this review is an open letter to Lake Erie. Lake Erie, why are you so muddy?? Your little brother Lake Michigan is able to maintain a color people expect a lake to be (Hint!! Not greenish brown!) It's a good thing the state or county (or whoever) built this lovely state park around you, because you are NOT appealing enough to be your own draw. Maybe if you were prettier, they could charge each car an entry fee, and recoup some of what it cost to build this park! You should be ashamed that the sidewalks here are more attractive than you. Come on, step it up a little bit! Ok, since the state or county or whatever entity is charging me my favorite price to explore you, I'll give you another chance. A really fun and exciting nature center located within walking distance of the lodge. There are bird feeders out back that you can view from inside the building. There are lots of stuffed animals on the wall that are fun to look at. There was a play area in the back for children that had a tv and puzzles to entertain the kids. The front desk attendant was very knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating. She had an excellent knowledge of warblers. read more

Great little nature center at the Maumee State Park! There are many things to touch: pelts, bones, turtle shells, rocks. They also have several aquariums with snakes, turtles, fish, and frogs. The area behind the building was visited by two deer while we were there! The lady at the desk was very knowledgeable about the birds we saw out on the trail. read more

We pulled into Maumee Bay State Park Thursday afternoon for a 2 night stay in our travel trailer. The signs were good and brought us right to where we needed to check in. Unfortunately, there's only one little lane that you can go through and everyone, weather you're already checked in or not is in line to enter this part of the park. The place was a crazy zoo and folks were obviously impatient and just wanting to go back to their campsite but having to wait for the newbies to check in first. After you finally get through that line about a hundred feet up the road is the water and dump station. Sigh- there's only two fresh water stations and if you aren't lucky enough to get in to one of them trailers will end up waiting, on the road, until they can. If there's more than two trailers waiting for water everyone behind you who just wants to get to their campsite gets to wait too. This is a big problem they need to fix! If you leave your campsite in a vehicle you need to plan on being back around 2pm before they're slammed and you get to wait in line again. It's just not a good system and seriously, there's plenty of room to add a second lane. Having now vented about that once you are in the campground it's wonderful. The spaces are generous, well kept and private. There's lots of paths to explore and if you have a fishing license you can catch some fish for your evening supper. Bring your bicycle! read more

Made a reservation for 12 for Thanksgiving dinner. We were seated at three tables for four. They would not allowed tables to be pushed together. Buffet was okay (shrimp still had its little legs attached), but nothing spectacular, and at the price we paid, we expected a lot lot better. Looking for a different place for next year. read more

We are camping here for a week. It's an awesome campground. They do themes every week. This week is Christmas in July. There is Christmas stuff everywhere as you enter the park. I was told Santa is making an appearance at each campsite this weekend. The kid in me is excited! I have a long Christmas list this year! The camp ground is very well kept and mowed neatly. They've left a few shrubs and taller bushes between each site for privacy. Lots of space at each camp site. We have electric n water but no sewer. The restrooms/showers are nice and clean and free. Laundry room is clean. Bring quarters! No change machine. Lake, golf, lodge, and museum all the grounds. Lake Erie 5 mins away. Great place to put out kayaks. We seen people wind surfing. Several folks were flying kites on the beach. Lots of bird watching if that's your thing. They rent bikes, kayaks, and paddle boards at fair prices (see pics for pricing sheet). They have firewood and a store when you first enter park. Sales lots of camping needs. Excellent place for families, groups, or solos. Would definitely stay here again. read more

One of the best campgrounds we've seen. The lots are flat, spacious and has foliage between sites. This is unusual for many other locations and elevates this campground far beyond others. The dump site has added hoses for easy connections. Air is available onsite, which is unique and appreciated particularly for those like us who travel great distances. The only negative is access to the site and limited number - there's only two and unfortunately the fresh water connection is also there. There are bike rental which include single and tandem at registration area. Restrooms are clean and plentiful. A variety of off roads have multiple trails. Close access to the lodge, beach and other amenities. It was a pain having to pull off to the side in the RV to walk inside to check in versus being able to do so as a drive up, but this process did keep traffic flowing at this singular entrance site. Posted weekend supply of donuts and coffee at shelter failed to induce there is a cost for both. It also should be noted the park will be completely closing in November until spring to add full hook up options on one loop. Currently all sites are electric only. This is an amazing campground and park. Best we've been at in Indiana and Ohio so far. read more

Stopped by on a sunny day to walk around and look at the wildlife. Ended up seeing FORTY deer (3 of which were bucks) in the three miles we walked around. Love the visitor center! I think the only reason why I didn't give it 5 Stars was because the park is starting to get extra soggy (like standing water all over the place). Not sure if they are looking into fixing this, but thankfully when we went it was the winter or else I'm sure the bugs and mosquitoes would be terrible! read more

I'm sure that this park gets a lot of use, but it's not for me. Besides the stupendous vastness of parking lots, there's a long stretch of beach with a few pavilions and a shack which rents kayaks. There are some criss-crossing "hiking" paths through the grass and shrub growths; there aren't many trees, so shade is hard to find. That makes for rather unpleasant hiking on a sunny, 89-degree day. I was very surprised that the park was so sparsely attended at 10:30 on Labor Day. I saw only a few dozen other cars there, even when I left after 11. There were some people on the beach, and some on bikes on the trails. They also have campgrounds and a nature center which I did not examine. read more

The good: clean rooms (except bathroom and moldy balconies), clean and comfortable pools and hot tubs. Great little cafe with reasonable prices and everyone who works there is kind and helpful - including the front desk. The sights are wonderful and there is a ton to do in the area and at the little resort especially for young families. The bad: there is a terrible smell of rot outside that I'm not sure is coming from the algae problem in the lake, a nearby waste treatment place, or manure used to landscape the area. There are weird smells all over the place - lobby, halls, etc but the indoor ones aren't necessarily bad. I'm not sure what is causing the problem or if it's something the staff could address but it is affronting. Also while the rooms are dated but clean the bathroom could definitely use some help considering the moldy caulking, etc that's not necessarily an easy fix but not a terribly hard one either. Secondly, the mold on the balcony railings should be address as should the spider webs. There are eco friendly ways of cleaning away mold and doing so would make the balcony a lot more comfortable I think. read more

my family rented a cabin here after my husband's celebration of life. We paid a lot of money for our 2 night stay. We paid more per night then I did renting an entire house in Virginia Beach. The cabin was in poor repair and not clean. We found dryer sheets all around trying to add freshness. The screens were torn. The furnishings were old and in poor repair. The area was dirty and had to be cleaned before we allowed our children to stay. NOT WORTH THE MONEY! read more

I love Maumee Bay and had my wedding here. The views of the water are amazing and there's so much to do. Boardwalk, nature center, pools indoor and out, scheduled activities by the facility, tennis courts, a beach, playground for the kids, game room, board games.....the list goes on. The rooms are comfy but the bathrooms could use a little upgrading. Lake views are a must have when booking. Nothing like waking up to the lake in the morning. They also have a gift shop and several places to eat. Bikes are available for rent which I feel is obsurd. My suggestion would be to bring your own bike. The bikes there aren't great. And avoid mayfly season. Yikes!! There have been a few improvements under the new ownership and I hope they can continue to make Maumee Bay even more beautiful and a great destination for NW Ohio. read more

I really enjoyed the state park. There are paved walking paths and some rutted bicycling trails. The beach is really nice with very small shells on it. There are about seven parking lots so I'm guessing that in the summer it's really packed. But it was fine and September in the mid week. read more

Nice view of the city over the bay. The inlet swimming side needed cleaning. There were several nice looking cabana style structures and what seemed to be concessions and rental equipment stands... all were closed and locked up including the nicer restroom areas. The only open restrooms were filthy and old. We rode our bicycles thru the park and along the bay. The natural scenery was gorgeous. There needs to be better upkeep and some investment into activity to get people visiting. We visited on the Tuesday after 4th of July weekend. I think there's camping at the park. I would have thought that things would have been open and operating. read more

Absolute gem! This free-entry state park is a beautiful little spot along Lake Erie. I found it on a cross-country road trip looking for something to do for a couple hours in the evening after getting to Toledo earlier than planned, and this was the perfect spot. Plenty of parking and walking trails along grassy fields and smaller lakes before you get to the main beach along Lake Erie. The sand was soft and clean, with lots of small shells in the water, if you like to scavenge. A few nice rock walls a couple of feet into the water that you can walk out on, or you can swim or wade directly from the sandy beach. I did go later in the evening, but when I went it was not crowded at all. Beautiful place to watch the sun set! If you're near Toledo and looking for something to do for a little while, this is a great place to cool off in the lake, enjoy a beach, or just walk around the rest of the park. read more

Went up to the park with two of my daughters and my wife. The beach to lake Erie was closed. Could not go into lake Erie due to a Algae problem. Swimming was regulated to a pond. The Trautman Visitor Center is on that state park property. This is one of the better visitor centers in the state. There is a boardwalk that leads from the center. My family enjoy that boardwalk and the center. read more

Such a beautiful place but I must say that I was quite disappointed with my last stay there in September 4, 2019. The tv, iron and coffee pot in room didn't work and I went to the lobby at 6:30 and was presented with cafes of cold coffee and was told by the 3rd shift girl that they don't work! The dining room was not open till 8! Also we went downstairs for dinner the night before at 5 and could not be seated because they had no servers! Are you kidding me?? I understand that you're under new management, but I have been coming here for years but will definitely rethink my next visit!!! read more
