This place is great for family, parties, sports, fishing, anything and everything…read more The bathrooms need a little bit more light but this place is overall great.

From the City of Monroe website. Munson Park Information…read more Located on the extreme west side of the City, Munson Park includes 212.07 acres adjacent to Monroe Custer Airport. It includes both active and passive areas although the emphasis is on active pursuits. Four lighted regulation adult softball diamonds with spectator seating and flagpoles at the ball diamond entrance, two youth sized ball diamonds, twelve soccer fields, a soccer concession/restroom building, four tennis courts, a large community built playscape, a jogging/exercise trail, walking/biking trail through the woods at the north end of the property, approximately 80 acres of restored native prairie grass, a skate park for skateboarding and inline skating, a pond with a spray fountain and two sand volleyball courts are found on the developed part of the park. Winter recreation activity areas include an outdoor ice skating on the pond located near a sledding hill. Paved parking lots provide parking for approximately 200 vehicles. Picnic shelters with cooking grills near the playground equipment offer respite from the active areas. The ball diamonds are serviced by a two-story concession building with a food concession and restrooms on the lower level and a scorekeeping loft on the upper level. Drinking fountains are available at the picnic shelter area, and at the ball diamond concession and the soccer concession areas. The City offers community garden plots for rent where local residents may grow fresh vegetables and fruits within the undeveloped part of the site.

Hip hip hooray!…read more West Park is not only back open, but really spiffed up and improved. It was a perfectly nice park before, but it was always pretty discouraging that the old amphitheatre was so neglected and inactive. Up until several weeks ago, the only show I had ever seen there was guerilla-style, when some WCBN folks decided to do a somewhat impromptu acoustic performance for a handful of black-t-shirted-listeners. I'm thrilled, however, to report that the amphitheatre has been polished up and its seating vastly improved. There's now a stepped area in front of the stage, which allows families and folks with lawn chairs and dogs to stake out a listening spot while not really blocking anyone else's view/listing enjoyment. There aren't many performances yet, but I am feeling hopeful. The last several Wednesday evenings, strains of the civic band have enticed us to join the crowd. The overall landscape of the park has been revamped as well. My understanding is that the previous layout would often flood or get muddy because of the nature of the (mostly) underground Allen Creek. Now there are wetland areas as well as a small pond with a boardwalk. It's strange how so much change could make a park feel like it "fits" better into the land, but that's exactly how it feels to me. Edible Avalon is also nurturing a large community garden in some of the previously unused space near the basketball court. I'm grateful to have a greenspace like this so close to home.

This is a great old park, old but now renewed. First time I went here was in summer of '67 or '68…read moreand who was there but Jerry Garcia and The Grateful Dead. I will try to upload a photo from then. It is not mine; I downloaded it from The Grateful Dead archives on line. It is a photo by Tom Copi. Thank you, Tom, all credit is yours, but this is how it looked. We were so much younger then; we're older than that now.
