We came back to the sugar bush house to hear about the process of syrup making. It definitely kept my 12 & 14 year old interested! The farm itself is also so fun to visit. And of course we bought honey on the way out since we got to see their bee grounds too! It was a really fun day out! The farmers are so passionate about what they do there. It's certainly educational but it's a really fun place to visit for events and just seeing some farm life, land, and animals

The wagon rides stopped at 12:30 so we just missed them, which was kind of a bummer since that was one of the perks the youngest kiddo was looking forward to despite the heat. Oh! We had been misinformed via LittleGuideDetroit that there was horseback riding and that in fact, seems to be down the street? In the end, we left with some peacock feathers, fresh goat milk soap and some flavored honey sticks.

The pickup time was convenient for us, on days that we were late we were still able to get the produce. Each box was full of produce, and compared to other CSAs I've been a part of we got a considerable amount of vegetables each week. In terms of the produce, we loved it! There was great variety in every box. Over the course of the CSA we got lettuce, tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, kale, collard greens, carrots, apples, apricots, herbs, mulberries, bell peppers, hot peppers, swiss chard, arugula, celery root, and more. The assortment of veggies changed each week, but it was always a good mix. I do wish there had been a little more kale/collard greens, though we did get swiss chard regularly (which was awesome). I think with a few more cooking greens I would give the CSA five stars. Obviously, we still needed to go to Eastern Market for other produce because not everything we wanted to eat is being grown in Detroit, but the CSA was a great deal and a great way to get us to eat seasonally. I do wish there was a list with each box that documented the weeks contents (esp the herbs), I was slow on discovering the blog, but even so I was always able to find ways to use the produce in each box. My partner and I had a full share with City Commons and paid half with work trade. Especially with the work trade, we thought the price was very fair and do-able for us. Also the hours of work trade were very reasonable. It was fun and rewarding to work at the farms that we got our food from and meet the farmers who were growing it. Another benefit to this CSA was that their growing season lasted pretty late into fall and the amount and quality of the produce was very consistent throughout the CSA. I would definitely do the CSA again and recommend it to people who are interested in getting fresh Detroit-grown produce.

Although I was originally very excited to join City Commons' CSA, I was ultimately disappointed…read morewith my commitment due to low value per box (each box comes out to a little over $20 and there is no way there were $20 worth of vegetables inside there) and misrepresentation of the vegetables included (many vegetables perished VERY quickly, and there is no way they look anywhere close to the vegetables they post photos of on their website). I wish this hadn't been the case, as I would love to support local business and urban farming, but my income does not support this sort of habit any more and I would urge those running this CSA to offer better all-around value to their customers (e.g. deliver? more than two options for pick up days? boxes based on preference? include more than 6 types of vegetables over the course of the season? give a recipe sheet for the items in the box WITH the box instead of asking your customers to go online days after the box has been picked up to view the (all-too-obvious) recipes (e.g. salad? Are you seriously recommending that your insightful growers have suggested making SALAD with arugula??) at which time half of the produce in the box is already on its way to wilt heaven? partner with other CSAs to offer better value and more variation?). If you're thinking of joining this CSA but you don't have money to burn, perhaps consider instead a quick trip to Eastern Market or even your local Meijer once a week for better value and selection.

It's tough to shop at my usual places where there are SO many out of stocks & where it doesn't feel like some stores are taking enough health/sanitizing precautious for their employees AND shoppers -- so, I've been trying new places like Frog Holler! From what I understand, they're typically a wholesaler that supplies to restaurants. But, they've adjusted their business model/offering quickly so that non-business shoppers like you & me can order from me! It was very easy/seamless -- they have a Shopify page (https://frog-holler-produce.myshopify.com/) to place your order & select a pick up time. It was a contact-less pick up -- they ask you for your name + you open your truck/door & they'll plop it right in. I went for The Original OG! (assorted organic bundle). The assortment changes but they have what's included listed out. My produce box was AWESOME - the fruits & veggies were really fresh. They also sell some breads (from a local baker), dairy/eggs, vegetarian items (tofu, tempeh, seitan, beyond burger). I will definitely be ordering again! I was hoping for seasonal, local produce*, so this wasn't quite what I wanted. However, I am giving it 5 stars because it was exactly as marketed, and the produce was excellent. Plus, there was a ton of produce in the Pear-fect box (just $25), and the penny delivery during the pandemic is such a fantastic deal--Just $5 regularly isn't bad either! We even gifted some of the bananas to the neighbors because there were so many that were perfectly ripe and ready to eat! *There were fruits/veggies that aren't grown locally and several items that weren't in season, so they must have traveled quite a distance. If Frog Hollow were more connected to local farms, I think my parents would subscribe to a weekly box! I surely would!

There are several different "sheds" which are basically huge barns that house tons of different local vendors--everything from produce, plants, ready made food, apparel, sweet treats, handmade crafts, coffee and other drinks, etc. We had a blast looking around each of the sheds and saw lots of interesting items. We didn't end up buying anything, but I would love to go back again. The market is open on Saturdays year round, and even in the coldest January weather there were a lot of people there! They have extended hours in the summer months. One of the best parts of visiting the market was the ample free parking in their lots. We also had fun exploring the neighboring shops and restaurants! If you like a good farmers market, be sure to add Eastern Market to your list to check out.

They have such a great variety from ready to eat food to fresh butchered meats, dried legumes, fresh flowers, clothes, crafts, and more. Its's an experience! You can't go wrong with ANY of the ready to eat food. I had a life altering chicken hand pie. It's got a cool industrial vibe. Dress warm!
