Service department has poor communication skills, and was very unprofessional. Scheduled car in for recall on 2/23/26 with a shuttle driver. Never got a call saying car was done and had to get a ride to get car. Also stated there was a oil leak which they fixed 3 months prior. Dropped car off at 8 am 2/27/26 for oil leak and again scheduled a shuttle driver. Now they couldn't find the leak and I never got a call to come pick my car up after repeatedly calling and texting I again had to have someone take me to get my car. They said they didn't know anything about a shuttle driver even though it was documented on my paperwork. Both times they were supposed to take pictures of rust on my frame but failed to do so. July 21 is day 59 since Preferred tried to fix the alignment on a brand new truck they sold us. My son Carson wrote an honest review about Preferred, which is pasted along with Nate Johnson's response to the review, after this introduction. Nate Johnson is the Fixed Operations Director at Western Michigan Automotive Group, which includes Preferred. Nate knew Carson's review was an honest review, as Nate confirmed the facts with someone at Preferred. But Nate still asked me twice to take the review down. Another appalling fact is that I found at least 6 Google reviews for Preferred that were written by employees at Preferred. For obvious reasons, Google has an option to report these types of reviews. These reviews skew the rating and don't give a true representation of the dealership. There were at least 3 additional reviews that I am very confident were written by employees, but I didn't include them in my count because the people who wrote the reviews have common names. I couldn't be completely sure that the reviewers were employees (only 99% sure), so I didn't include these reviews in the 6 referenced above, as that wouldn't be ethical. Before I get into the whole story, here's the latest. Some of this introduction is also talked about later, but I wanted to lay out the rock solid, indisputable evidence that proves how Nate has done almost nothing, except hinder this process since the beginning. The amount Preferred is using for an insurance quote for Preferred to fix our truck, that was wrecked while Preferred was using it in their course of business, is $5,496.02. Actually, that's the bill we saw. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they told their insurance company that it's going to be double that amount. I find it hard to believe that Preferred's insurance company will apply $5,496.02, or whatever amount they are telling their insurance company, to Preferred's deductible due to the fact that it will cost Preferred nowhere near that amount. On July 19, we took the truck to another Ford dealer to get a quote to fix everything that Nate said Preferred had done correctly. The quote from the other dealer was over $6,400. This means Preferred has made it more difficult for another Ford dealer to fix it than if the other dealer would have originally worked on it. The other Ford dealer talked to the body shop manager at Preferred and was told that Preferred made a business decision to not put any more money into the truck. How is it even legal for a dealership to just decide they are not going to fix a truck that either they or their insurance company is obligated to pay to fix? It was wrecked while they were using it in their normal course of business, which according to my insurance agent, means they are responsible to fix it. read more

Horrible service experience. Took F150 in for electrical issue. They didn't exactly find the true problem, hacked apart the wiring harness and attempted to 'repair' things that weren't part of the problem, while never fixing the original culprit. Ordered a $213 connector that wasn't needed. I ended up fixing the now-apparent issue and re-doing what they tore apart. I returned the unopened part that wasn't even needed, and instead of giving me full credit...they charged me a restocking fee on the part. It was the last straw. This place has led to one of the WORST situations due to their poor vehicle inspections and selling us a lemon. My boyfriend purchased a car from them after we got in an accident. We barely had it for 2 weeks before it has dangerous electrical problems such as Turing off while driving. Took it in to get fixed, this took well over 3 months and when we drove the car for one day it did the exact same thing. This entire experience has been a complete nightmare of lost sleep and may cost us our jobs at our place of employment due to them giving us a garbage vehicle. We had to spend a month on rentals before they gave us a car to drive around. Now we're back jn the same situation and just told to wait as they don't have the ability to do it again yet. Avoid this place at all costs the staff may be nice but the amount of hardship they will inflict if they give you a lemon isn't worth it. read more

I leased my 2015 Ford F-150 from a dealership in Maine, but I moved to Michigan in 2016. When it came time to return the vehicle I wasn't about to drive it back to Maine. We decided to bring the vehicle to Preferred because we absolutely didn't want to take it to Great Lakes Ford. We worked with Josh and Mike. The return was not terribly quick, however it was very easy. We had purchased the extended wear and took good care of the vehicle while we had it. It was under miles and meticulously maintained while we had it. I knew I wasn't going to go with another lease for now, so this was simply a return. That being said, because of this experience, if we were to lease or purchase another Ford we would go to Preferred. read more

They only care about the sale. Bought a 2011 Ford Fusion new from them 1.5 years ago. The car had transmission issues since new (slamming into gears upon acceleration and downshifts when coming to a stop, and occasional slipping where it is like the car goes into neutral). Took it to them several times, and each time they stated it was normal operation for the car and they refused to do anything to fix. The transmission issues are well-known by Ford (google it), and yet dealers refuse to acknowledge the problem. Two months later, there is a loud whine coming from the engine bay that matches RPM (think the sound you get when your power steering fluid is low). Upon some simple investigation, it turns out the problem is another well-known issue with these cars; the tensioner pulley bearing failing. Once again, Preferred Ford (and other local Ford dealers) refuse to do anything about it, even though the car is under warranty. They stated that the repairs would NOT be covered under warranty until the parts (transmission or pulley) physically fail to where the car cannot be driven. I have tried several times to get these issues repaired under warranty from both Preferred Ford and other local Ford dealers to no avail. Only once my cars powertrain warranty expired (another sham as they told me when buying I had a 100,000 mile warranty, when it turned out after signing it was only 36,000 miles) did they admit there is a problem. Fast forward to today... The whining pulley that they stated was perfectly normal MELTED and caught on fire, causing the engine bay insulation to catch on fire nearly burning the whole car down. Preferred Ford will gladly fix it now with money out of my pocket now that the car is out of warranty. STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS DEALER!!!!!! Btw, other fun problems with this dealer.... They never notified the SOS that the car was purchased or transferred my plates, so two days after I bought the car, I was pulled over by GH Public Safety and initially treated like I stole the car and ticketed for driving it with invalid plates (Preferred told me to just put my plates from my jeep on it since they supposedly transferred the plates). They also only gave me one key and tried charging me several hundred for the second key. It took a year to get the second key free of charge. read more

Dropped my truck off Friday (10/1) at 8AM to have a bedliner installed. At 230 that afternoon received a call from the service department stating that they had ordered the wrong part. When asked what they were going to do to fix the issue, I got a "We'll order the part and it should be in sometime next week." Was told that I would receive a phone call that night with an update. No call. Called back in just before 5, no update and was told I would receive a call Saturday or at the latest first thing Monday. No call. Called in again just before 5 today, was put on hold and eventually asked to speak to a manager. I had rented a car to get through the weekend, and now am out $355 for a vehicle I rented while my truck sat in the dealer lot not getting the work that was scheduled to be done. I've leased my last 2 vehicles from this dealership. They will no longer be receiving my business. read more

We bought a used car from Preferred Ford in Grand Haven Michigan and paid cash. They bought the car at an auction. We paid them but they said the title would be in in a couple of days. 3 days later we went in to sign the title. It's been 5 weeks and just found out they had the wrong title at signing, and we would have to wait until the auction house sent them a new title, then we'd have to wait for them to send in the title to the Michigan Secretary of State. We had to go to the Secretary of State office to find out that they hadn't even sent in the title application.They wouldn't give us a time frame as to when we could expect the actual title. I'm surprised they had a 2-1/2 star rating. Seems rather high. I bought/leased 2 cars here 3-years ago, with completely different management and salesperson, and was totally satisfied. So it made sense to come back. After negotiating a deal, I ended up having to walk away on a for sure new truck sale, and a potential 2nd car sale in a month or so, all because the sales manager and GM changed the terms of our deal at the last minute. I was literally sitting in the finance office about to close. My salesman was great and I feel bad for him, but management screwed this deal, which they'll likely blame the salesman for. I took my vehicle to the service department for recall work which involves a rear end alignment. They advertise $65/2-wheel alignment and $100/4-wheel. Not only did they charge me $70 to align the front when they were already doing the rear, they charged me additional fees for shop tools and environmental charges. When I asked the service manager Tony he said they are charges just for pulling the vehicle in and cleaning oil/etc. Um hello, it was already in for recall work, isn't it unethical to double charge me and Ford for the same thing? When I picked up my vehicle I asked them to file paperwork to reimburse me for previous work done to replace one of the components that was part of the recall as directed in the letter from Ford. The associate told me this was my responsibility and gave me a number. The Ford representative directed me back to the service manager who informed me that his associate was wrong and he could file it for me but I am better off doing it myself. Tony said he still hasn't received reimbursements that he filed in August. Again this contradicts the letter from Ford which says they will respond to me within 60 days and they will respond to the service department requests in expedited fashion. This experience has left me feeling neglected and taken advantage of. Their mechanics did the job but the customer service was terrible. I will not be back. read more

If I could give it half a star I would. Go in the dealership Friday after noon was told by salesman, Dennis we could get deal done for certain amount of a payment a month. When said I needed a lower payment went back and forth of how he could not get it done but when said I was going to another dealer was told, he would work on it and get back to me. Had to call and call to finally get told will hear something on Saturday. Saturday heard nothing called on Tuesday afternoon and left message. I had to call back three hours later to be told even if I go with the original payment now deal can't be done. Just odd how one moment it could be done to sorry we can't help you. read more

I inherited a minivan this past summer from my father as he passed away. Last week, the rear gate stopped opening. I have a local mechanic I always took my previous cars to, but my dad always took it to the dealer. He had a good relationship with the employees, so out of respect for him, I went to the dealership. The first employee I worked with remembered my dad and said very nice things about him. It really made me feel good. I dropped off the van and waited. I received a call that said the repair would cost $1000. The parts alone were $750. I declined the repair, but still had to pay $120 for the diagnosis. I went home and searched the parts on ebay. I found them (all 3) for a total of $450, and they were not even used! They were brand new. So I went to my mechanic. I figured I could buy the parts and he could fix it for less. I dropped off my van and an hour later I got a call. The gate was fixed. They found the same thing the dealership did, a rusted lock mechanism. But they just sprayed some lube on it and in 15 minutes got it working no problem. There was no charge for the repair! And Preferred wanted $1000! $0 compared to $1000. That is insane. I called Preferred and left a message. They did not call back all day, so I went down there. The service person talked to the manager on the phone and refunded my $120. But the manager didn't have the guts to talk to me face to face. The service person kept saying that I should be wary because who knows how long the fix will last. Really? Let's think about this. Either they are incompetent, and don't know what WD-40 is, or dishonest. Those are the only two options. I even asked when I got it back not working if they tried to put some lube on the lock. I don't think anyone should take their vehicle there for service, although the workers are really nice. read more

A two and a half hour oil change. Need I say more? Yes I was there when they opened and was the 1st customer of the day. Was billed an "upcharge" on top of the advertised "special" price. Was told this is due to my vehicle not being "typical". I drive the most common FORD on the road! A year ago I brought my vehicle here for brake job. Had to bring it back twice within a month for adjustments. This service dept obviously doesn't care about its customers....pretty standard attitude in this resort town. Again I was disappointed with Preferred Ford... I was told that I needed my transmission fluid changed. My mileage was 43,000 miles. I looked deeper into this and asked my transmission guy about it. He said that according to Ford's service guidelines, that I did not need to change the transmission fluid until 100,000 miles because it uses synthetic transmission fluid. My overall impression is that they get you to come in for 40,000 mile service only to take advantage of you with unnecessary service costs. Not happy. read more

Mistakenly, I trusted what the salesman said. The car hadn't been detailed as they said it would. I found McDonald wraps, 2 6 ounce bottles of hand soap, and sand on the rear mats. The 172 point inspection they do for pre-owned Fords didn't find the leaking valve cover gaskets, the oil filter gasket or the transfer case. I bought the car in January, this is July and I have had the car in for service 5 times! Two times the service center reps told me it was dripping residue! Really?! Why would you service a leaking gasket and not clean up the mess? But everyone is very nice to your face. Wow! read more

Overpriced isn't even the word for it. If you get an estimate from the service department you should call around to other dealers. Way over list price on Ford parts, a labor rate of 109 per HR. which turn into a lot more, for example 2 hrs of labor is actually almost 140.00 per HR..ask how many hours of labor something is, and may want to compare that to other dealers as well. Don't even get me started in their ridiculous " shop supplies" charge of up to 50 bucks. It's worth the drive to anywhere but there.. read more

the service staff people are really great and friendly. Over the last few years I have been taking my car in for oil changes and never had a problem. I do like the checklist they return for review but I they do like to recommend other service. The only complaint is the 30 - 45 minutes it takes to change the oil is a bit excessive but being retired I don't mind too much. The lounge is excellent but if I was in a hurry or had kids I don't think I would do this unless they get it under 10 minutes. read more

This review is based on my experience with the service/repair at Preferred Ford. Took my 2016 F-150 here because the doors didn't want to open/close when cold. Found out there was a recall for this along with two other recalls. It took a week to get into service. My initial encounter was positive. The people were nice and the facility clean. Got a call after a few hours that it was ready, however the heater core (one of the other recalls) needed to be replaced but they didn't have the part in stock. 1st thing I noticed when I arrived to pickup my truck was the doors had not been fixed. They said the guy who helped me that morning probably removed it from the computer because although it is a recall, it's not a safety recall, so they only fix it if the customer has issues with the doors not opening/closing. I told them that issue was the reason I called and made the appointment. They apologized and said they'd offer me a loaner, but they didn't have one available. They said they'd call when the parts come in. I waited 3 days and decided to call to check on when the parts would be in. Found out the parts hadn't been ordered! The guy I talked to said he thinks the heater core is on back order and said he'd find out and call me back in a minute. Never got a call back! I called another Ford, won't ever go back to Preferred Ford! read more

Let's see, I've probably purchased or assisted others with purchasing vehicles about 25times in my life (all used), I believe more but 25 seems about right. I've traveled 100s-1000s miles for a good vehicle/bargain or if it's specific to what I want (for I usually save $$s and pay cash). I've bought foreign, domestic, cars, trucks, from individuals to small-large car lots,..from a 1975 Malibu to my current 2015 F150 SuperCrew. And to be honest, I haven't had a bad experience with any of them that I can recall. The Preferred Ford Dealership is easy my best experience/support I've received purchasing a vehicle.. I told them of me writing this review towards the end of the sale (AFTER I Paid them:)) I also told them I'd have to give at least one negative comment to (further) show my objectivity:). Well, I told them just prior to leaving with the truck, it wasn't a full tank and it was OK by me for I really wanted to have at least one negative thing to mention about the experience,..., of course they wouldn't let me leave w/o filling the tank. So the negative, they filled the tank with Regular Unleaded, of course that's what the Truck requires but they were so cooperative, I'm somewhat surprised they didn't insist on 93Octane or offer to transport it to VA and fly me back separately:). Great price, great salesman (John Sweeney), great staff (Josh, Jason,..), , great sales manager (Barry),..$$s willing, when I purchase another car or assist others with one, though there's a timezone and driving distance,..they'll be remember and mentioned. BTW, John held the truck for me past the time we agreed because the weather prevented me from arriving on time. While our first experience with them last week was what I considered brash (only considering our budget needs by pushing alternative financing), we still decided to try and purchase a vehicle from them. After triple checking with the sales associate about the availability (who received the sales manager's go-ahead on a sale approval we received last week) and after waiting a half an hour at the store location, the manager came over and said they were choosing to sell the car to someone who had a higher offer! No care about customer service - all about the money! We have made three different trips (1 hour round-trip each time) to secure this vehicle, spoke on the phone to the associate countless times, brought in a pre-approval letter, and **they have the audacity to tell me the car is being sold to someone else as I had already began the purchasing process!** Our experience with Preferred Ford was the worst we've ever encountered, and even if the price might be right, the customer service is absolutely unacceptable! Bought a truck there about a year ago and since the month after we bought it, its been nothing but problems. One major issue after another that causes it not to start, or shut off while we are driving! They fixed one thing then said they'd make it right. Well "making it right" was trying to sell us a way more expensive and newer version. Now its not running AGAIN, and its a $1500 repair.
