We had a backed-up drain from our washing machine that was causing water to back up into our…read moreutility sink. I first tried snaking it myself with a 15-foot snake, but it was still backing up. I then hired two other plumbers to come out and snake it, and neither was successful. One of them even told me I needed to redo a good portion of my plumbing for over $5,000! I found Rock Solid Drains after that, and they told me that all they do is unclog drains and that they have the equipment necessary to clear difficult washer/utility sink drain clogs. John from their team came out and within about 15-30 minutes had run a snake through our washing machine drain line, cleared the blockage, and had our plumbing working exactly as it should again. These guys are great if you have a drain clog that you can't clear yourself or that a normal plumber doesn't have the right equipment to handle. They solved a problem that two other plumbers couldn't, and did it for a very reasonable price. Highly recommend Rock Solid Drains. I was notified by my water company that I had a possible leak. I immediately contacted American…read moreLeak Detection (ALD) and they came out to see if they could find the source of the leak. There were no leaks in the house or the irrigation system, so the only possible source of the leak was somewhere between the water meter and the house. ALD came out twice. Two different employees. Both very nice and friendly. Neither could pinpoint the source of the leak; one thought it might be on the driveway near the house but was not confident to make the call. They both thought it might be somewhere on the line running from the street (backflow) to the house, part of which is buried in hillside trench covered by small plants. They suggested digging up a portion of the line between the street and the house that was in the trench because they could not get any readings with their equipment in that area. (More on that later.) BTW, the water line was professionally installed, tested and inspected around 2015. So, I had a leak but where was it? My plumber thought that the possible failure points could be at the connections at the street, the backflow or the house. We dug up a number of test holes but could find nothing. After receiving another notice from the water company, I contacted another leak detection company and they found the leak. That company was C. Cruz Sub-Surface Locators, Inc. And the leak was huge. I have attached some photos of where the leak was located (X marks the spot), and videos of the leak itself. I hope I never have another leak, but if I do I know who to hire. Regarding ALD's no readings on the line in the trench running to the house, according to C. Cruz, the reason ALD got no readings is because there was no leak in that area.

He approached one valve, said it had a leak, took a picture, and then left after less than 10 min. And charged me $605. He did not even take a look at the water meter indicator to see if the leak is consistent with the water flow. The next day my plumber detected the real significant leak in a different valve and fixed it. It was the one driving the flow. Not the one the $605 technician identified earlier.

My problem is with the billing methods now apparently used my the major plumbers. They don't bill hourly, but by the job using a confidential software program. This hides the costs and results in a higher overall cost. They verbally quote individual prices for services but never provide an itemized bill. My service required pulling the toilet and replacing the base plate; resetting a new toilet which I purchased and delivered. The total duration of the work was almost five hours at a bill rate of about $400/hour. I received verbal quotes from other plumbers after I had committed to Dokes of hourly rates of $225/hour. What I learned was to obtain cost quotes in advance before being locked in to a job. If I can get a plumber that quotes hourly rates versus by the job, I will go with them in the future.
