We had a huge water bill last month and knew we had a leak but saw no visible evidence of water. Most plumbers don't do leak detection so we reached out to American Leak Detection. Their team responded immediately and sent someone out first thing the next morning. The employee was so knowledgeable and passionate about the work. He explained the process, confirmed we had a leak, and gave us the leak's precise location. Our insurance ended up covering the cost of their service so it's worthwhile to check your coverage! While I hope you never need a leak detection company, it is reassuring to have a company like this when you need help! Highly recommend! read more

I was notified by my water company that I had a possible leak. I immediately contacted American Leak Detection (ALD) and they came out to see if they could find the source of the leak. There were no leaks in the house or the irrigation system, so the only possible source of the leak was somewhere between the water meter and the house. ALD came out twice. Two different employees. Both very nice and friendly. Neither could pinpoint the source of the leak; one thought it might be on the driveway near the house but was not confident to make the call. They both thought it might be somewhere on the line running from the street (backflow) to the house, part of which is buried in hillside trench covered by small plants. They suggested digging up a portion of the line between the street and the house that was in the trench because they could not get any readings with their equipment in that area. (More on that later.) BTW, the water line was professionally installed, tested and inspected around 2015. So, I had a leak but where was it? My plumber thought that the possible failure points could be at the connections at the street, the backflow or the house. We dug up a number of test holes but could find nothing. After receiving another notice from the water company, I contacted another leak detection company and they found the leak. That company was C. Cruz Sub-Surface Locators, Inc. And the leak was huge. I have attached some photos of where the leak was located (X marks the spot), and videos of the leak itself. I hope I never have another leak, but if I do I know who to hire. Regarding ALD's no readings on the line in the trench running to the house, according to C. Cruz, the reason ALD got no readings is because there was no leak in that area. read more

I strongly discourage anyone from using this company. I had the worst experience. Thinking I did my due diligence by talking with the city of Rohnert Park , 3 conversations with Ariel the supposed knowledgeable person that answers the phone at American Leak Detection and 3 conversations with the actual owner Shawn MacCauley. Thought I was asking the right questions, not being accustomed to hiring a leak detection company. They assured me they would find the leaks and repair the problems at my property. Jonathan came out to my property and spent 20 minutes. He dug one small hole in my front yard to find a leak in my irrigation turned on the sprinklers in the backyard and noticed 2 visible leaks, which I had disclosed in our previous conversations but because of the consumption of water was told and was thinking it was more an unseen under ground problem. The water company had said this problem had been there since 2024, these small leaks in the backyard had sprouted only two weeks ago. This was disclosed to Ariel and Shawn. Jonathan was not proactive had no interest in completing the job and doing any further leak detecting. Basically I was out $260, which Shasn't, the owner stood by as a courtesy discount from $495. Jonathan was at my property for 20 minutes, did nothing to help me and did not care to help nor did Shawn when I called to try to rectify the situation. As an owner, you would think he would be more proactive and accommodating, it was quite the contrary. I am now in a position where I've wasted $260 did not get any answers which I was assured I would receive and now need to hire another company to come out and locate the issues. The service and mentality of American Leak Detection is no more than uncaring. They are not proactive and helpful by any means and have a careless attitudes. read more

A technician from the North Bay and Peninsula came over to detect a leak in my irrigation system that includes 12 vallves. He approached one valve, said it had a leak, took a picture, and then left after less than 10 min. And charged me $605. He did not even take a look at the water meter indicator to see if the leak is consistent with the water flow. The next day my plumber detected the real significant leak in a different valve and fixed it. It was the one driving the flow. Not the one the $605 technician identified earlier. read more

We had an emergency situation where we lost water and the property was large enough for us to feel daunted by the task of finding the leak. We called American Leak Detection and spoke with Paul. Paul sent out Greg right away. He was literally at our place within minutes. Greg was professional and really knew his stuff. He found the leak very quickly and, although though the heavy work of digging still needed to be done and took a good bit of the day, we had an enormous load of stress taken off by their help. A big thank you! read more

I had a very significant leak and had ALD out to find and repair the leak. ALD was able to fix my leak and Trevor was great! Very kind and professional. read more

UPDATE: As it turns out, the two technicians (LG/DC) somehow were not able to detect the water under the flooring. They claimed it was all very dry. NOT!! It was completely wet underneath. Maybe if they had spent the full two hours looking for the leak, or, were more diligent in their investigation, or, checked the battery on their equipment... who knows. They detected moisture in one wall but just blew it off. They relied too heavily on the movement of the water meter to reveal any leakage. The report was short, vague and not at all useful. When I had a question about a product they recommended and called to get the name. Left 3+ messages/emails and never got a call back. Disappointing and expensive experience all around. read more

I had a leak on my 20-unit apartment complex. I was trying to ask American Leak Detection to help. They said that they will do a "site inspection" for $795 which will identify the "area/section" of leaking although not the specific leakage. For a specific leakage detection, a follow up checking will be needed. I probably should have asked what "specific methods" they usually use to determine "area/section" of leaking. During inquiry regarding the service, I did ask if they have acoustic listening devices or thermal imaging devices to detect leak. They said no. When the technican came to our site, he pointed out our MAIN SHUT-OFF VALVE IS NOT WORKING THEREFORE NO FURTHER ANALYSIS CAN BE DONE. And he suggested us to add more valves at different location to isolate the areas to help in isolate the leakage better. I would think if we have all the different valves installed, I wouldn't ask them to help finding the leak for us. I will not recommend American Leak Detection for leak detection since they don't have any advance devices to help you identify the leakage. read more

Finding a leak in the house is stressful, especially if its on the weekend. I was able to speak with Paul right away. He scheduled a technician to come out first thing on Monday. Andrew was on-time, found the problem quickly and scheduled the repair soon after. Repair went smoothly. He answered my numerous questions patiently during that time. Both Paul and Andrew were very helpful the whole time. I would highly recommend this company. read more

After spending the initial $495 for American Leak Detection to come to my house and pinpoint the leak, I have now spent $9,565.52 to have the sprinkler system fixed, AND the leak was NOT where it was pinpointed in the backyard. It was dripping at the initial pipe where the water can be turned off and on. Yet another ripe off. read more

All That Glitters Is Not Gold - A Word on American Leak Detection (ALD) When a client calls for leak detection, it is not routine maintenance--it is an emergency, often a deeply stressful situation, almost like a medical trauma. In such moments, what one expects from a service provider is competence, professionalism, and above all, basic humanity. Unfortunately, our experience with American Leak Detection (ALD) was the opposite. ALD projects an image of professionalism, but behind the glitter there is no gold. Their appointment window was 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The technician, Mr. Dominiq, arrived at 1:47 PM--late, unprepared, and without any proper leak-detection tools or gear. Instead of beginning the job, he offered excuses about needing the water turned on. In our housing complex, it takes about 10 minutes to coordinate the water supply. Yet, he did not even wait 11 minutes. Instead, he chose to walk away, threaten us with "visit fees," and effectively blackmail a client in distress. ALD's business model seems less about service and more about extracting fees from vulnerable homeowners--taking advantage of urgent situations without delivering real solutions. This is not only unethical but deeply exploitative. Clients deserve transparency, fair dealing, and genuine care--values you are far more likely to find with smaller, local outfits who actually respect their customers and understand what it means to be in crisis. American Leak Detection is a cautionary tale: all that glitters is not gold. read more

What a piece of mind. So thankful for John S. He was on time . Worked fast. Was very thorough and informative on exactly what needed to be done.!! Work every penny to know we had no major leeks and just lots of smaller repairs to do. He also marked everything and walked me through it. Plus a detailed report. Also was prompt on all phone calls. Thank you again!!! read more

My insurance company assigned my case to American Leak Detection. Rodney called within a couple of hours. Scheduled for the next day. He had an opening earlier in the day and we got it. The Tech, Trevor REALLY knew his business. Saw what he believed the problem was, got his meters and equipment and went to work. My insurance company isn't going to pay, they say this is a "flood exclusion" issue. But at least I know EXACTLY what the problem is and I will find another company to fix it. I would use these guys, but they don't do the kind of work I need done. Really a good experience from the bad experience of water incursion from my foundation and through my moisture barrier. read more

This company is fabulous! It is not our first time using them. They have come to our property a few times for broken underground irrigation. They have never let us down. This week we had a damp spot in our drive, that turned into a puddle, that quickly within a couple of hours turned into a cascade that started showing water 20 feet from where we first noticed it to the other side of the property. We knew we had issues. We had an earthquake the night before and thought fore sure it had something to do with it. Sadly it was Saturday, so I called but they were closed, so I left a message. We shut our water off and turned it on only as necessary until Monday. I got a call first thing Monday morning. Vince was awesome, he said we are booked out today but let me see what I can do, if not we will come first thing tomorrow. He called me later in the day and said he had good news they were on their way! Michael shows up, asks a couple questions, pulls out the detector and goes on the hunt. I ask a lot of questions and he is happy to answer. He gives a great analogy of what he is listening for and what he is looking to hear. When he finds it he says hear that! Yes Sir I do and the analogy was spot on! He does some testing places the mark and gives me a repair estimate. Runs through the repair info and some details of what happens. I call Vince, ask some questions and he tells me they can fix it tomorrow! Start to finish, concrete and all and Michael will be the one coming back out. Perfect! 7:30am time. Arrived when scheduled, ready to get into it! He explained the whole thing including worst case, no surprises. Of course our pipe wasn't normal and our concrete was thick so it was more than the original estimate (but all things known prior) Michael worked all day on his own to get this cut, dug, repaired, buried and concreted, tinted and speckled just like it was from start to finish in less than 24 hours. Excellent job! With as much of the mess cleaned as possible. While it wasn't cheap, you don't expect it will be with the range of service they offer as a complete start to finish service, the peace of mind you get with it being one person from finding it to finishing it is worth it! No questions were ever a bother, no problems with you watching, very honest and courteous! Vince and Michael both worked hard to get us back up and running! You guys are truly an asset to this company! Thank you! read more

American Leak Detection - Plumbing Near Me - San Rafael, California

Beware, if your ins. company urges you to use American Leak Detection (ALD) for exterior water problem!! Was promised "lots of special equipment", "will find and mark location".Tech from ALD showed up and said "only here to do water pressure test" "not find leaks".He looked at meter while i turned on hose. Then he checked pressure on hot, cold and irrigation lines.(best most accurate way to check these lines is to turn on. which he did not do!) His final report states "all held pressure" and "NO LEAKS". (amazing that irrigation line has "no leaks" since partially dissembled and full of leaks when turned on!!!) Next this tech walked around my house taking pictures while making absurd unfoounded remarks that he neglected to put in his final report while actually denying some of them!!! Some examples are "you could put a french drain around your entire house" I stated more practical to find/repair leak! By just standing on my cracked driveway, without any tests, stated "i think you have a leak in your drain pipe" (covered by ins co.). His final report states "driveway cracks due to ground movement" (not covered). Drive way drain scoped few days later by real plumber and found leak in drain pipe. My property is flat and not able to visualize three sides due to hedges and fences which tech never even approached. (and no tests done) states moisture in back yard "rain related:. I tried to provide dated pictures proving problem in back yard began BEFORE any rain and very dry!!! Tech refused to look at them. His report states "can only go by conditions at time of inspection". This company ALD must make an awful lot of mis diagnoses if they consider onset of problems as an unimportant issue!!! This tech actually even asked me (and included in report) if back yard water problem was worse with rain???? I intently looked at him searching for a logical reason for such a stupid question!!! (and found none) I have to be careful here since this tech is a relative of part of management of ALD but i also have to be honest. I found this tech to be very dishonest in denying comments made to me and the differences in the report!!!I also found him to be extremely unqualified to be doing any water pressure tests!!!! (or plumbing work). GOOD LUCK TO YOU IF YOU OPT FOR THIS OPTION FROM YOUR INSURANCE CARRIER OR ANYONE ELSE!!!!!!! read more

I have been struggling with a leak and pool issues for years doing my own work around and patches until my work was no longer sufficient and so I called ALD to come out. I was 99% sure it was the skimmer and so paying them 490 dollars to tell me what I already knew irked me but when all was said and done it was nice to have a thorough check out of all the drainpipes lights etc and after seeing the amount of actual work and demo required to replace and repair it I thought the price was fair for the install as well . The star of the show was Dominick the repairman on site. At first I thought who is this kid they sent over. Younger than my youngest daughter but I was so blown away by his professionalism , work ethic and communication and expertise not to mention his conscientious commitment to getting every step perfect even capping old pipes that I would hire ALD again and recommend them to everyone. Too bad they don't do roofs. My water pressure and suction have never been better and I'll sleep better knowing the leak is finally stopped read more

American leak sent a two person team to our Home Owner's Asso. to find leaks in our irrigation system. The team that arrived informed us they were only responsible for finding a single leak. This is the first line in their contract, "American Leak Detection makes every effort to accurately locate your leak(s)..." So I was amazed when the crew said they would just find one. On top of that they failed to find the major leak and instead just identified a small leak in the system. The major leak, found today by SubDyanmic (whom I now highly recommend) was right underneath the backflush valves, so I don't see how they could have missed it. To come back and find the additional leaks they wanted to charge us a second time for the up front fixed fee to come back to our site.....ridiculous!!!!! I would never recommend this company to anyone, very disappointed in how they did their work. read more

We called ALD last week for the leaks in our old pool, in advance of a pool remodel. The technician, Andrew H., was on time, knowledgeable, friendly and efficient. After the service call, we were provided with a detailed five-page report, with photos, that will help our pool contractor with the remodel. HOWEVER (and through no fault of Andrew), the company did not tell us to top up our pool to above the suspected leaks so that Andrew could test all the cracks properly. (Our pool loses just 6" of water and then stops.) Because of that, the test results were "speculative" with regard to the leaking cracks (? bond beam) because the pool water level was too low to test properly. IN SUMMARY, we would use ALD again (and would request Andrew) with the caveat that you, as the customer, ask for absolute clarity in advance of the visit re: what you need to do to prepare for the service call. read more

Work done as promised to repair a leak in front four our house,, great employees, decent pricing as well,

I called the number posted on yelp and there is a guy called Vince picked up the call 20 min ago. He was not patient at all. Very rude and aggressive when I tried to offer more information about the leak I had recently. He kept talking on top of me. When I asked him to stop being rude to me, he argued and became more aggressive. This was the first time I have ever encountered situation like this in my area. We suspected a water leak after reviewing monthly water bills - which indicated increased consumption - and that didn't make any sense at all~! So I called American Leak - and they sent out Trevor to find the leak...it under our driveway on the side of the house. He provided us with an estimate at that time to fix the leak. We decided to go with American Leak and a week later Trevor came back to fix it - and this involved cutting out part of the concrete driveway, fixing the leak/pipe and repatching the driveway. All of this was done professionally and in a timely manner with clear communication. I did not shop around - so cannot comment on the competitiveness of the price - but was definitely satisfied with the quality of work (which btw comes with a 2yr warrantly - so that gives me peace of mind). read more

I was extremely impressed with the work that American Leak did for my neighbor's property. Ariel was amazing in helping to get the job scheduled quickly and went an extra step to fit my own schedule. The service specialist, Nicholas, was a very skilled professional with the right tools and deep knowledge of plumbing and the art of leak detection. Today, I had my first experience working with North Bay & Peninsula American Leak Detection, after we suspected a water leak. The overall experience with setting up an assessment and having the technician come to our home was seamless and worry-free. I called around to other companies first who had multiple fees attached to the initial assessment (traveling, tools, extra work). Good thing a local plumbing company recommended ALD. My first experience was with Monique over the phone who provided excellent customer service and guidance on the phone about the cost, what to expect, and the follow up after the appointment. She went above and beyond in setting up my appointment. The highly skilled technician, Andrew, came to our home and within 1.5 hours, located different sources of where leaks were coming from. He was professional, polite, and respectful. Andrew was extremely thorough and kept his work areas clean. He was very considerate of keeping water from leaking all over the place. Once he was finished, he reviewed what he observed and provided recommendations on what areas to fix. The rest is up to me. I highly recommend this company and would use them again if needed.
