Good selection of craft beers and a nice selection of bbq. The brisket wasn't bad although I would have liked to see a choice of flat or point. They have burnt ends but you can only order them one day a week. Surprisingly there were quite a few families with younger children. There are lots of large tables so seating for a large group isn't a problem. There are some interesting signs here - one about tipping and another about inequality. Sooooo good. The deep fried cheese curds were divine and the pulled pork was saucy and delish as well. Would recommend. . The vibe is chill and great for a group hang out or catch up. Really wanted to like this place. Coming from a place with many local craft breweries, I was not impressed. I liked the atmosphere, it had a very warehouse feel. I tried the Gingerbread Brown Ale and the Ginger Lime beer, I didn't not like either. The Gingerbread Brown Ale had a strong rubbing alcohol taste. We are the pretzel bites, fried pastrami and fried cheese curds apps. The fried pastrami and fried cheese curds were yummy! The pretzel bites should not be called pretzel at all since they were more of a multi grain bread and did not have any consistency to resemble a pretzel other than the shape. We then had the Meat and Potato platter to share. It came with potato salad (that claimed to have bacon on it but didn't) and the jalepeno cornbread. We got pork and beans as a side. The meat was decent. The pork and beans were flavorless and I mean FLAVORLESS. The cornbread was hard. The bbq sauce was nothing special and there was only one!! Super friendly staff! Love that they get paid a living wage and tips are not expected! Such a nice change :) Had the poutine with brisket and cheese curds, beer and a lemonade. We had 2 burgers, bison and boar, pulled chicken both of them were so overcooked and the bacon that came with the burger was more or less raw and not able to eat. I ordered from DoorDash and literally nothing looks like the photos they put on the app. I was so excited considering the have such great reviews on both yelp and DoorDash but my food was just terrible. I got the apple slaw, corn fritters, donut holes, and the Big Mac and cheese with meat on top of it. This tastes like food from a Bodega in NYC... And not even the good kind. The bbq here is 4 stars, but for now these guys are getting 3 stars because they don't have their own beers except their collab with Last Best (which is great). The space is huge. This is the old St. John's Music location before they moved to the other side of Blackfoot last year. There's clearly lots of room to grow for PDB in this space. I was following them long online before they opened their doors. They ran a promotion to search for golden prairie dogs around the city. If you found the prairie dog you get a free pulled pork sandwich for life. The idea was great, but unfortunately the contest got swarmed by a team of people who ended up with most of the prizes. On my visit here I went with one of their platters. I had tried their brisket back in May at beer fest when they were dolling out sliders so I was excited to try more. The only let down on the plate for me was the sausage. It was dry and overcooked. I like the sauces they're offering including the collaboration with Paddy's, but I wish they had more sauce options. Most BBQ places will have a good 5+ sauces to choose from. I'll be back. They're brewing their own beers now so I'll wait until they're on tap to pair them with some delicious BBQ. read more

First time at this location. Lots of parking, which is nice. Large space, friendly staff, plenty of beer options. Service was a bit on the slow side but I'm sure they will sort that out. In regard to the food, there were lots of options to choose from. We ended up trying all of the meats and have nothing to gripe about. The seasoning was great, especially on the ribs. Corn bread is to die for. Tried the fried corn balls as an appetizer, that honey butter is insane. Save a bit for your corn bread with your main. You won't regret it. We felt like this is exactly what it would feel like being in a bbq joint in Texas. I'd have to say that the presentation was very different, but I'm going there for a good bbq, not for how pretty it looks. read more

Had high expectations for this place from other reviews but was disappointed by the food. The food was mediocre. Pulled pork and the ribs were very dry and lacked flavour. The only decent thing was the chicken. The sides were also very small and bland. They skimp out of the sauces when you order out. Ok it's official...this place is legit! I usually don't like IPA's because they're too hoppy but since it was National IPA Day yesterday I decided to give it a try. It was absolutely deadly and thank God it was lunch time or I would've drank a pile of it. Tried the dark beer and it was also amazingly good. For food I did the brisket sandwich. The nailed the most important thing besides flavour when it comes to brisket sandwiches....not too fatty and not too greasy. Plus the bun was top notch. Want to know one of the things I liked the most? No tipping. Right in the menu they explain that they pay their employees a living wage and that tips are not required to supplement their income. But you can buy them a beer for $5. Personally I thought that was awesome....and they backed it up by NOT having a tip option when I paid with credit card...WOW...loved it and didn't feel guilty after buying our server a beer as well. Overall just loved this place and will be taking people there whenever I get a chance.....oh and did I mention that they have the LARGEST smoker in Canada? Our first time here and it was fantastic. The IPA was delicious and they have 5 oz pours which allow you to try several different beers on the menu. The chicken sandwich was a hit with my husband and I had the boar and bison burger which was dense but moist and delicious. Cornbread was an awesome side. Potato salad tasted like old fridge and both sandwiches had more flabby bacon in it then the actual meat itself. Quite strange.

The husband and I had the brisket sandwich and the pulled pork sandwich. We were both a little worried because both proteins looked dry. Our fears were fully unwarranted. DELICIOUS. Yes I'm yelling, because I if I could fit them, I'd have a half dozen more sandwiches. Our server was great - super sweet and helpful. We tried the Kolsh Train Espresso, Chocolate Stout and the Nitro Stout. It's rare we would recommend everything we've tried, but here we can make an exception. Highly recommended, get here before they're always super busy (because they will be). If PDB is reading this, add the crispy onions as an appetizer to the menu. Preferably in feed-bucket size. I've passed this location everyday coming from work and decided to give it a shot. Let me first say that it wasn't busy and there was plenty of staff. My wife and I wanted to sit on the patio but all the empty tables were dirty, the waiter acknowledged it! He said he would clean a table for us...after 15 minutes of us sitting at a dirty table he finally cleans it off. We order our food and drinks out on the patio, it starts to rain so we move inside. 20 mins later I receive my drink but the waiter completely forgets my wife's drink until we mention it. 20 minutes later I get my wings which are bland tasteless and under seasoned. My wife sits waiting for her food I go and ask a waiter can he please check on her order. Our actual waiter comes over and informs us that he forgot to place her order entirely. At this point I'm upset! My wife's food is not ordered...my wings are bland.....wife's drinks were forgotten as well...I was pretty much over it. The only saving grace was a new waiter took my wife's meal off the bill. Sorry to say Prairie Dog Brewery has lost our business. I don't recommend this place to anyone there are better BBQ locations in Calgary. read more

I am so incredibly excited to write this review...we chose the prairie dog brewery to have my husband's 50th birthday party because they have an amazing space you can rent out that has a huge screen TV and enough space for 60 plus people. The staff was absolutely amazing, the space we rented was incredible, the beer was fabulous and the food was so delicious, very yummy BBQ!! It was such a pleasure to work with all the staff, they bent over backwards to make the event a night to remember! I highly recommend PDB for any kind of event and of course it is such a great place to go for just a beer and a bite to eat and kids are always welcome! read more

This was the worst restaurant I tried for a while now. Staff what staff !?! Seat yourself to a dirty table. Then when they finally see you at a dirty table you have to ask them to clear it and wipe it down. After you ask ...the staff roll their eyes. Like I'm sorry you didn't do your job and I am an inconvenience as now you have to serve another table. Then for beer, staff have no idea what they are serving and what's in it, other then the short ingredients list I can read myself. And then food ... well you think being a BBQ place they would know how to do just that, but again disappointed. Got the brisket sandwich. Under cooked meat, loose toppings, messy plate. I was really looking forward to trying this new brewpub as its near work and home. The beers were good and cold and they definetely have an eclectic selection. However the server was very snarky and the whole time acted like she was better than everyone and even the place she is working at, making remarks that she is really a Sales VP or something like that and is just helping the brewery out because they are desperate for her great serving skills, and making little snarky negative comments about the group of owners and the cooks in the kitchen, about what they are doing wrong with the business, great way to represent your friends that you are "helping out" even though I'm sure its easy to hire servers in Calgary. They advertise a no tipping policy, but yet ask for tips of buying beer for the staff, etc etc. The prices are clearly higher because they pay their staff more, but than we get attitude and as we were leaving we could clearly hear her remarking to someone how we didnt tip. Like make up your mind, either do what every other pub, bar, brewpub does in North America and accept tips or don't accept anything at all, including buying a beer for the staff. And isn't it technically illegal for customers to buy staff alcohol, although I'm sure it happens everywhere, but to advertise it as a tip when you clearly advertise that your a tip free establishment is ridiculous. read more

Been here twice now. Undoubtedly the beer is great, they have great selection for a microbrewery, and have not disliked any I have tried. The first time we sat at the bar, and the service was good. The bartender was fairly attentive and was able to answer question about the beers. The food was sub-par. It wasn't very flavourful, the portions were small and overpriced for what we received. The second time around the food was much better. The portions fit better to the price point, everything tasted great, more what I expect from a "smoke-house" style restaurant. The service was absolutely atrocious. We sat for quite a while before our server came to us, apologizing as she 'had a 20 top'. The delivery of drinks was quite slow as well and she seemed quite surprised that we were ready to order. The food came to us in decent time, she never returned. We tried to wave down several other server but were unable, when the host sat the table beside us, we asked for a server to come (he didn't, we watched him return to the front without talking to anyone) my friend finally went to the bar to order another beer, which the bartender wanted him to pay cash for instead of putting it on his tab. When the server finally returned she again tried to excuse herself with being busy with the 20 top, I told her I didn't care, and if she couldn't handle our table to have someone else serve us, she told us anyone else working there could help us and we explained that we were unable to track anyone else down. Sidenote: she completely ignored the other table beside us until after she brought me another drink, which was not fast. Etc, etc... I realized much later after we left that she charged me for one extra beer. read more

This place has some great meat! Stupid me ordered a salad - a beet salad and it was ok. They forgot the one of the toppings on it but even after the waitress brought it the salad was just ok. But the meat. Oh beautiful meat. How glorious you are. My daughter said "sorry mom, this pulled pork kicks ass, yours is just ok". If you go, and you should go, get meat. If you get a salad, just know it will be comparable to something you could pull off yourself at home. When I go out I want to eat like I'm going out, taste food I know I can't make myself. Feel good about paying for a meal. If you get meat, this will happen for you. And yes, no tips. You can't even add it to the bill, so no guilt there. The service was horrible! We started out with a couple samples of beer before choosing a flight or sleeve and Not once were we asked if we would like a beer or refill. Ordered a couple appys and there was no cutlery or napkins on the table. We went up to the bar to ask if someone could drop some by the table and were told to grab our own from another table. Had to go to the bar asking if someone could swing by and take our food order. We needed a couple to go boxes and you guessed it had to go find someone to get those too. The bar was not busy and lots of staff mulling about at the bar but not attending to the guest. This was our table of 5 first and last time there! Upon first entering PDB we were enticed by its large space and massive brewing containers. It was our first time there. Once we had ordered drinks and food, it was nearly impossible to get our server for more beers or even water. Our food took a long time and our sever did apologize (which was appreciated) but when the platters arrived the chicken was over cooked and the brisket didn't have a smoke ring and lacked flavour. They had sold out of a lot of their food which is too bad but even odder, they had run out of certain sauces for the meat. The potato salad and Mac&Cheese fell short on flavour and the weird wonder-bread addition to the platter was unnecessary and lacked vision. Lastly, it wasn't made clear anywhere that tipping is not an option on the payment machine which left us in a very uncomfortable position not carrying cash. Prairie Dog is definitely a place to keep coming back to. The barbecue is great, and I particularly liked the rub that they used to flavor their ribs. There's a nice variety of beers, and the service was top notch. Best of all, they weren't playing music! People could actually talk to each other, rather than having to yell over a pounding beat. It was still loud when we were there, but the din of conversation gives the space a more energetic and lively ambiance than music ever could.
