If you want to work in Ireland you need a PPS number. It's like a personal working number for you that you need to get your tax certificate so you won't get charge emergency tax (of 41%...yikes!) at your job.People already working in Ireland have a PPS number, but if you've moved here you'll need to get a PPS number.
Unlike getting your GNIB (which now takes appointments, but didn't when I got my number) the PPS number is booked online. It can take a few weeks to get an appointment time, so it's best to book this as soon as possible. You'll need to create an online account to book an appointment at mywelfare.ie. It takes two minutes to sign up and is pretty easy to do.
There might be a queue outside if your appointment is first thing in the morning, but as long as you made an appointment you'll get in during your allotted time. Make sure to bring a letter from your employer or a saying you have a job or a job offer. You won't be able to get a PPS number without it. I also brought my GNIB card and the Working Holiday Visa letter I received (since I'm here from Canada on a working holiday visa).
They'll ask a few questions, get a fingerprint (digital) and take your photo. The whole process take ten minutes. The lady I dealt with was very friendly, even though she was quite busy. In a week or so you'll get your PPS number in the mail as well as your Public Services card. While it's not going to be the greatest thing you'll ever do, it's was pretty easy and straightforward to do. read more
