Yesterday was designated Scooter looking day. The plan: to hit up as many Scooter shops in the Toronto area. First stop, Motoretta on College Street. You really can't miss this store if you are looking for it, as they have a bunch of Scooters parked outside. This is the first scooter shop we hit downtown, so we were really the uneducated folks trying to soak up as much information as possible. Well, we picked the best place to do that. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. They answered all of our questions and asked us a lot of questions to probe into what kind of scooter would work best for us. After the initial introduction and question answering period, they got a little overbearing. Overbearing in the sense that they acted too aggressive in trying to make the sale. They knew this was the first store we went to, yet tried to use car salesmen techniques to get us to buy ("these are on back order, we aren't going to get any until next March", "it's a good time to buy now", "this is the last one"). Even after we had thanked them for their time, and we were just going to look at the rest of the store for colors and different models and such, they continued to hound us. I'm not saying they were not helpful, they were extremely helpful, but it got to the point where it felt like all they were concerned with was making the sale. Our objective, as we mentioned to them wasn't to buy one right away, but to look around and get a feel for prices and different models/features. This is a great store to come to for information, and if you're ready to buy, I'm sure the staff will be more than accommodating. As I learned, don't take everything they say at face value. Go and do some research at other scooter shops. read more

A 4 year old child has better communication skills than the owner of this shop. They had my bike for 3 months and weren't even able to fix it. To receive any sort of update was like pulling teeth. I understand that I bought a 40 year old vintage bike that is going to have so issues BUT JUST TELL ME or, if you dont have the no how to work on the bike, dont accept the project. I had been considering buying a scooter for a little while when I stopped in one Sunday afternoon. Don't let the really cool merchandise fool you. This is a serious bike shop. I met with Clyde who was really helpful. He took his time and told me everything I needed to know about scooters. The rest of the staff are really great too. They make you feel really welcome and even offer you snacks and drinks while you browse. And if you are looking for cool clothing etc., don't let the bikes parked out front fool you. The have an awesome selection of clothing, bags, and more. I ended up buying a Honda PCX 150 that I'm really happy with. I almost can't wait to bring it back for maintenance. read more

I've taken my two Yamaha BWS scooters to Motoretta / Powersports for annual tunes and general annual review etc. Their prices are fair, their turn around has been prompt. This year it was the same drill. Someone had broken off the mirror on the BWS and I took it in for repair. While there I saw another BWS but the 4 stroke not two stroke like I've been riding. I bought it. The staff were "on the job" for the 2stroke's repair and I bought the new BWS 4stroke. Now the 2stroke will go to my son once the balance of regular maintenance is completed. It's a great shop. The sell bikes as well as scooters. If you're downtown and own a Yamaha I'd give them a try. It is the right and duty of every young urbanite to covet the shiny, elusive (to some) Vespa scooter. We have stores like Motoretta to constantly remind us of this fact. The presence of this business in my very own neighbourhood was what initially alerted me to College St.'s modicum of slickness. There they are, lined up in a candy-coloured row, in a decidedly delicious manner- bright lights, and a minimalist decor to highlight their lusciousness. And that is what they are to browsers like myself: a treat for the eyes, and little more. There is that unmistakable motor-y smell that I don't encounter too often, and then the more artistic side of scooter-ism: the accessories. Along with some pretty cool framed prints and little mini figurines and such, Motoretta carries clothing brands like Ben Sherman, Fred Perry and those higher-end Adidas items. Like any respectable boutique, the choices are small and consequently exclusive; a few sweaters folded on a steely-looking table, some well-lit polo shirts beside it. What I like: they sometimes have ridiculously-awesome sales, the current one being about 70% off fall apparel. This may not be the right venue to declare such things, cuz no doubt it is over or close to- but the guy *did* urge me to "tell my friends". Also to tell: about my new super fly Adidas purse- the "Steffi Graff" model!- which I got for 20 bucks. It makes me feel active, just like I'm sure your scooter makes you feel cool. I can repeat what the previous reviewer said - they did try same rather transparent and annoying high-pressure sales tactics on me. I was browsing, and they didn't have the color scooter I wanted (black). They went so far as to say they would call a woman who had ordered the last black one, get it for me instead, if I wanted to buy right now, etc etc. It was ridiculous. For a while they had a sale showing absurdly low scooter prices with a fine-print "$500 delivery charge" - they advertised the price as 500 less and put in 500 on a fine print charge - embarrassing again. However, they also have some very good sales people, helpful with lots of info. Every time I've gone back (I did end up buying a Benelli there) they staff have been great to deal with. The mechanics - In summer they are busy. I had a re-occurring problem with the new Bike, and it was a pain getting it fixed. But in the end they've got it running better than new. And it was under warranty, no problem. It was a hassle, but thank goodness the staff and mechanics were super helpful in sorting it out. So - It's a funny mix - I think they may have some suspect sales policies that are offset by having a cool shop that attracts some really friendly and knowledgeable sales and support staff. A nifty shop, but don't let the great help from some of the staff be spoiled by the poor pressure tactics from others. read more

Was having issues with my recently serviced, (by another repair shop) front forks for my '02 Honda VFR800 and last week happened to walk by Motoretta. I was put in touch with Jesse and after a brief convo I felt he would be able to set my bike up to ride the way that I was used to. I was not disappointed. Firstly they were able to book me in fairly quickly, (4 days lead time), and that was dependent on getting the parts from Honda. He took them apart and cleaned/replaced the seals and refilled with the appropriate fork oil in a few hours. He also recommended replacing the front tire, which I agreed with. The service was done quickly and well. When I got home I had a huge smile on my face as the bike rides and handles the way I was used to. This bike is now really ready for another long trip. Motoretta has now become my go to for service on this bike. Thanks. read more

BUYER BEWARE MOTORETTA Purchased two scooters from them four months ago and they have yet to release to me the proper documentation so I can register these scooters. When I repeatedly contact them, At one point the management says. "Well you have waited this long , what is the big hurry" Very un impressed with this type of customer service. read more

I've never been angry enough at a business to write a bad review, but now I am. I took my Vespa (LXV 150 from 2010) about a month ago for something they told me would cost about $200 and take 2 to 3 days. They didn't call for a few days, so I called and was told that a part was needed and that they'd order it. This should take 4 or 5 days max. It took 3 and a half weeks. I called a few times in that time period and kept getting the run-around. I realized I was being strung along because they were waiting to have enough parts to order to justify a bulk order to save them money. In the meantime, I paid over $120 in tokens to get to and from work. They finally got the part in and then "discovered" they needed to replace two more parts - another $110 bucks. I went in the next day and, based on the initial estimate and the added parts, was expecting to pay about $350 bucks, including tax. They wanted $465 - out of nowhere. I complained and eventually they brought it down to $370 - how they justified the drop in price, I don't know. While I appreciated the drop in price, if I hadn't said anything, they would have happily accepted as much of my money as they could. I've had my Vespa back for about 5 days now and it's worse than ever. There's a dangerous sounding rattle when I accelerate and I'm sure more work will be needed. UPDATE! Despite Yelp filtering my review because I don't post enough, Motoretta saw my review and acted amazingly! They called me a bunch of times and wanted to walk me through everything. I went in and talked with a manager, said my piece and he apologized profusely, explaining their position and asserting that this was a rare case. They credited my account for the inconvenience and did some additional work - including replacing parts - free of charge because they wanted to make sure I was happy and my bike worked wonders. It was actually a very good experience. I was very happy with their response and it did a lot to restore my faith in them. read more

I have had friends complain that some of the staff are really arrogant and not too helpful. I thought how bad could it be? Apparently really bad and if you get the wrong staff member they can be really prickly and sarcastic. Though it a hassle I take my business elsewhere. Too bad, as it should be an enjoyable experience but the poor and arrogant attitude of a staff member is a real downer. read more

Came in a while ago for a visit to see if the rumours were true. I'm no yelper but I thought I had to share this. I've heard their bike service can be very slow, so I've never taken my Vespa there. Turns out they don't even sell Vespas. I can assure you though that the models they were showing on the floor by Cleaveland Cyclewerks (yep, with an 'E') are well-known for breaking down and seriously injuring riders. Surely they knew that. It stank of gasoline all through the store. It was the first and last thing I noticed about the place, and it wasn't pleasant. The music ranged quickly from kitschy and familiar to weird, alienating and actually creepy within minutes. it felt a bit like being in a funhouse, without any fun. A pudgy guy with glasses gave me a snide once-over when I entered, followed by a very artificial smile and welcome, which made me surprisingly uncomfortable. He immediately began trying to sell me a bike, while sizing up my clothing, and when I said I wasn't in the market, he suddenly just turned around and left without a word, and stormed off to sit behind a desk in a tiny office. A minute later, while a friendly blond-haired girl was busy keeping the shop in good order, the same guy came out from behind the desk to start an argument with a customer over nothing, made some slur about 'women drivers,' and then snapped at a technician for mentioning that he had overbooked the shop workers again. I wasn't even there very long, considering the lack of appeal: the service was obviously bad, the clothes were terribly overpriced for the make and quality and the attitude was so obviously unfriendly I felt like I was almost being guilted into caring about their products. There was an older guy who I guess was the actual manager, he just sighed and did nothing to stop the younger guy's antagonistic grabs for attention. I'm actually not sure why he was there as an overseer, as the mechanics in the back and the girl who kept the shop seemed to be doing most of the work, without any proper management. If it weren't for them, I've no idea how this place could have stayed open for so long. read more

Have been a loyal customer of Motoretta over the past 2 years. Service is quick, reasonable and of considerable quality. I recently traded in my Vespa for a Stella and worked with Clyde from Motoretta. No pressure sales, personable and very enthusiastic about ensuring I got great service. They also gave me a very reasonable trade-in value on my Vespa and I am now a very proud of owner of the 2014 Stella. I recommend Motoretta for anyone looking for quality - without hype and sales ego. It was a great experience and I will continue to do business there in the years ahead. read more

I feel compelled to write this review after hearing from a few friends and my own experience of this place. . Pushy and desperate I think sums it up. I am in sales and it is laughable the cheap techniques the sale staff use. "this is the last one in stock" was used and then when we walked away she ask if we wanted to put down a deposit on another bike "NO" I do not think they have been trained properly and it is a little embarrassing. Also get a full break down on price, I mean all the little extras. Ask for the full price of the bike for pick -up. The bikes and clothing range are excellent, but you are warned. read more

Don't trust the salespeople at this shop. Very push, aggressive and they even lied to me about the performance and reliability of a scooter I was considering to buy. And I even dealt with the owner who was also extremely rude and condescending. Buy somewhere else and get treated the way you would expect to be treated. That's my opinion. read more

The place might be fancy and in a good location, but if you want to pay a reasonable amount of money on scooter/motorcycle maintenance please go somewhere else. They are simply TOO EXPENSIVE!! Other places can do the same things for half the price (I say this by experience). I took my scooter for a tune-up and tire replacement and they charged me a crazy amount of money due to an insane amount of time. I would definitely NOT RECOMMEND this place for these kind of things. read more

Absolutely the worst service of my motorcycle ever. Motoretta ordered incorrect parts, did not tell me until they installed it - now I have mismatching levers. Manager's words "I can hardly tell the difference, so I doubt you will". I paid for both new levers and ordered a specific one, yet they gave me one + a stock?!? They also damaged the lever upon installation (scratches). Parts did not come in for almost two months, when they assured me it would arrive within the week. No feedback, they did not communicate this at all - I had to call constantly to find out my part was back ordered. Highly disappointed, will never go back for anything. Be warned - do not take your motorcycle to these people! They will rip you off and your bike won't be taken care of. read more

Sadly, Motoretta is no longer associated with Vespa / Piaggio. They lost out in the dramatic demise of their CSC (Canadian Scooter Corporation) breakup with Vespa. I bought my Vespa from them in May 2008. I thought I was buying a 2008 model year but learned that it was a 2007 when I renewed my insurance and found the certificate showed 2007. I thought it a mistake but learned otherwise. I never had a problem with their service quality, I did however lose a year on my extended warranty when CSC died. I understand that the normal Vespa Warranty on units sold after CSC closed is an outstanding issue. read more

I am completely stumped as to how this store is still in business. I tried calling the store initially to ask a simple question about an oil filter. I tried 3 times and kept getting the answering machine. When I finally got through on the fourth try the person answering the phone said she had get someone to call me back. I was a little surprised but I was in the area by that time so I went in person instead of waiting for a call back. I stood there patiently waiting while this same girl finished with another customer. No problem, I'm waiting my turn. Again, she had to wait to get someone else to cash this customer out. In the meantime I'm waiting to ask my question and I'm not getting a chance. I was waiting there for 6-7 minutes until the guy from the back came up front to cash the customer out. As he turned to walk back he finally had a thought to ask if I was waiting for someone or if I needed help. I asked for an oil filter for a vespa scooter. He brought it up from the back and told me it was $25!! I questioned the price and he replied indignantly that its been $25 for 20 years. He also said it was more expensive since it was a genuine factory part. Now, I know that this store is not an authorized Vespa dealer so I was a little dubious about the genuine part claim. I also asked if they had the o ring that seals the drain plug. Vespa recommends that this o ring is replaced on every oil change. The guy said it comes with the filter. When he came back with the filter I asked about the o ring again. This time he said they didn't have any. Anyway, I needed the filter so I bought it and went home to finish the oil change. The next day I called the Vespa dealer (they were closed the day I bought mine) and they said a genuine filter was $12.50 and they had lots of stock. They also asked if I needed the o ring for the drain plug as this seal is supposed to be replaced every oil change. They asked without me having to bring it up. I have to wonder what the quality of vehicle service is like at Motoretta. Aftermarket oil filters being passed off as genuine. Not knowing about replacing factory recommended seal replacement. Front counter staff not being able to cash a customer out and having to have other people call back customer. And to top it off it's hard to get through on the phone in the first place. Stay away from this business if you don't want any headaches!! Next time I need anything I will be going to the Authorized Vespa dealer without hesitation! read more

Beware of scams at Motoretta. They will say anything to sell you a bike. Only after paying for a brand new scooter in their showroom was I told it had problems. It took them a month to get the bike actually running. Then, after driving it away, I was told that the Vehicle Identification Number was different from the one on the Bill of Sale. I was never told exactly what had happened to the bike I paid for. I drove the bike for two weeks but each time I filled the gas tank, the electrical system shut down and the bike stopped running. I've now taken it back twice, but they can't figure out what the problem is. It turns out they never checked with Transport Canada and didn't know there was a recall notice describing safety problems for this bike when the gas tank is overfilled. The mechanic had never heard of the problem and said, anyway, he doesn't check for known recall problems on new bikes until a problem arises. So much for safety or getting the bike you pay for. I don't know how these people stay in business, but I wouldn't trust them with a tricycle. read more
