This is a premium gym, yet the space is relatively small. Recently it's clear the focus has shifted on acquisition rather than retention of members, resulting in the following pain points: - Changing rooms get super crowded: hard to find a free locker, bumping into other people post shower due to sheer lack of space, frequently having to queue for hairdryers - Queueing (behind up to 5 people) for the showers - Temperature issues in the women's changing rooms this winter: the door to the swimming pool is propped open, creating a cold draught in the pool and in the women's shower area. At regular intervals there's showers don't have warm water (worsening shower queues) - Due to overselling of classes happening at prime time there are no treadmills available at from 8AM to 8:45AM every day My husband and I were mid workout this morning, when the personal trainer positioned herself in front of our treadmills, weaved her hands and very rudely shouted "YOU NEED TO STOP NOW!". She and her colleague forced us of the treadmill mid-run, saying that they need it for the class and that there are no treadmills available between 8 and 8:45AM daily. When asked whether that means we can't do our workouts in the future he said "yes, it does, I am sorry. We tried to get more treadmills but it was not possible". So here we are, two fully paying members dishing out £430/month, being told we can't do our workouts. Given their recent focus on acquisition they need to look into expanding their space or stop accepting new members. Treadmills are basic gym equipment and need to be available for members - either limit the class spaces, get more treadmills or expand the gym.

There is a good sized pool, pilates studio and a huge array of classes like Rockstar Bollywood and Burlesque. In truth I could go on for ever with what this gym has. If you wanted to get in shape fast, this is where I'd go. It's not like a "luxury studio" like Ten Health that has like stocked showers and a clothing shop, but Ten is what I'd call a "gentle" class, frequently much older people in class, and I don't think you get the same results, vs Epoch which will kick your ass and have you feeling the effects for days. I've taken classes from 3 different instructors here, they are all equally hard, which is what I go for. I'm pregnant a the moment so am opting for milder workouts while I'm pregnant, but once i'm postpartum I will definitely be coming here to get my body back in shape fast.

This Fitness First location can be a bit intimidating for first time gym-goers and people who, like…read moremyself, have been away from gym culture for awhile. It pretty much does what it says on the tin--there are cardio machines, weight machines, free weights, and a selection of classes to choose from, but it is quite small for such a central location and it can be a bit of a zoo at times. I work directly across the street from this location, so it is perfect to pop over after I get off. If I zoom over as soon as I finish work, I can usually hop right on an elliptical machine and have my way with it for an hour or so, but if I dawdle on my way out of the office, the place will be packed by the time I get there. The space is unfortunately just not big enough to accommodate the number of members and it can make for a mildly unpleasant experience. The equipment, however, seems to stay in good working order and the "Cardio Theatre" setup (several different TVs tuned to different stations, with a headphone jack on the cardio equipment enabling one to tune in to the audio for any of the TVs) is great to combat iPod fatigue. There is a decent selection of classes, but I haven't really been grabbed by any of them yet. There are spinning classes, aerobics, karate, capoiera, the very occasional yoga class, and one pilates class a week. My last gym had belly dancing classes and strip-aerobics classes, but Fitness First seems to have quite serious and aggressively-named classes instead. (Body Pump! Body Combat! BODY ATTACK! No thank you.) My main gripe with this location is that the upstairs ladies' changing facilities are insanely small! The whole locker room is roughly the size of a conference room in my office, and it is just NOT FUN to come in all stanky after a whole cardio workout and have to lean over people and squeeze between people to get your friggin' shower stuff out of your locker. Seriously, it is pretty much impossible to get from one end of the changing room to the other without whacking someone with your elbow or stepping on someone's toes or crashing into someone drying their hair. It is majorly, majorly cramped and unpleasant enough for me to start trying out other Fitness First branches in wholly inconvenient locations just so I don't have to deal with these shower/changing facilities here. This Fitness First location is a completely average gym with decent equipment and cool amenities (free drink station, video lending library) whose potential success is diminished by the overcrowding and perpetuated by the voracity with which they're trying to recruit even MORE new members.

She asked me to fill in some paperwork. I have to say that Sky had a really good attitude and seemed to enjoy her job! I'm sorry to say it, but most Fitness First receptionist in London look as if they hate being there! Anyhow, Beverly, the sales lady who was supposed to show me the gym wasn't there, so I was told to just get on with it. I would describe the main workout area of the gym as about the size of a five-a-side football pitch - it's too small! (The whole place is probably around 5,000 sq. ft.) They have crammed in 30 cardiovascular pieces and a few Life Fitness machines. There is also a set of dumbbells, some fixed barbells, a smith machine and a studio for classes. The changing rooms are average Fitness First stuff, there's also a sauna big enough for about five people. Good points: I have to say that I liked the staff in this gym. They were friendly! Whilst I was working out I saw a handful of personal trainers, either training on their own or with clients. A lot of the people knew each other and you could feel a sense of camaraderie amongst the group. Bad points: The gym doesn't have enough gear. They only have one leg press and only one smith machine. A staff member told me that there are 2,300 members in this place. It needs to be bigger (they won't turn members away - most gyms just don't do that!). On the Internet they say that they have recently renovated. That doesn't seem to be the case! A final thought: When I finally got to see Beverly she had stomach pains so I demonstrated a position to alleviate the pain. Whilst she was doing that she offered me various joining options ranging from between £50 to £60 per month. This is a low-end gym. However, the people lift the rating from 2 to 3.

Location: Located in Covent Garden, it's actually located inside the "Gym Box", so make sure you look for a big yellow sign. Walk in, check in at the front desk and they'll send you downstairs to a room without very many directions. It took me a few extra minutes to figure out where the gym & class were, so if it's your first time, make sure you allocate at least 5 extra minutes. Class: More focused on core and legs, and didn't do too much with arms. It was fine for me, but if you're looking for a more upper body workout, you may not be getting much with this. The class is pretty fast-paced, so not the best if you're a beginner or have never taken a reformer class. Instructor: I had Jess, who was great. High-energy, friendly, and was paying attention to correct posture/form. Music: Pretty high energy music that you may find in a dance club in Europe (but with vocals). I like this type of music, so I appreciated it, but if you don't like this kind of music, you may want to avoid it. I'd definitely come back here again on another visit in London. Happy that they are on Classpass, as it makes it easy to try the class out.

In a gym all I need is: Some space to skip/stretch/lift weights A treadmill Weights I have that at easy gym. I have only used the shower once or twice and I don't plan to use it again. If easy gym wasn't so busy, it'll be ideal for the price. Nevertheless, it's got less busy from when it first opened and that could be due to people moving away or giving up on their New Years resolution (that promise ey!) What easy gym doesn't have is access to a pool , steam room etc. I don't care about that as I don't consider it to be hygienic. It's an easy gym so the concept is easy. Lots of cardio machines, weight machines, cross fit space, and lockers. The free-weight area is a big small, but it's nice to have an extra extension of the gym that is much cooler and less crowded than the main workout area. There seems to always be a class going on, which is nice when it comes to building a close-knit community. On the downside... the locker room can be a bit bigger, there's usually a payment problem with the vending machines (doesn't help that the on-site staff can't help resolve related issues), and the water fountains have terrible pressure. I think it's great that the monthly rate at the Gym is lower than Puregym and there is enough the Gym locations to make the multi-gym pass worthwhile. Another perk of the membership is being able to invite friends, which can easily be done through the app. On that note, the Gym's mobile app is really intuitive and easy to use. Also signing up doesn't require direct debit, which I had to do by opening up a new bank account when I signed up to Puregym.
