I have become a huge supporter of Lagree method pilates since discovering the workout this past summer in Chicago where I live. Soon after becoming hooked, I got pregnant, and I was very pleased that I could continue my fitness regimen while pregnant. At my studio in Chicago, I took a special prenatal class and learned all the adjustments that I needed to make as my body continued to change during pregnancy. My goal is to continue to Lagree method of pilates until I birth my child in May. By staying fit and strong during pregnancy, I hope to have an easier birth and quicker recovery post-birth.
Because I travel significantly for work and pleasure, I always look to see if there's a Lagree method pilates class in the town that I'm visiting. In addition to regularly take Lagree Method Pilates classes in Chicago 3 days/wk when I am in town, I have also visited studios in Bellevue, WA and Shelby Township, MI. While on a business trip in London, UK I did a search for studios and was tremendously excited to find that there were three Lagree Fitness studios here.
I signed up for the 8:15PM class in London City with Vinny and the 5:15PM class the following day with Li Lin. Upon arrival at the studio, Vinny very kindly told me that it's their policy, due to UK legislation, to not allow pregnant people to work out past their first trimester. Since he himself was prenatal certified, I could still attend the class, but I would have to cancel the class with Li Lin today because she was not prenatal certified.
While I appreciate the apologies from Vinny and the way that he handled the situation, I am extremely upset to be discriminated against due to the fact that I am pregnant. This is a time in a woman's life when it is indeed most important for her to be fit!
After a quick online search, I couldn't find any articles on UK legislation not allowing pregnant women to work out after the first trimester. If it's important that a trainer is prenatal certified, why haven't they gone through this certification before being allowed to teach a class? Why is it ok to treat a pregnant woman in this fashion?
I asked several women who are based in London if they have experienced such treatment themselves at other workout studios, and none of them have, so I am confused why these policies exist specifically at Studio Lagree.
I hope that the studio considers future changes to its policies and its treatment of pregnant women. read more
