City Health Club

City Health Club

Tower Hill, Aldgate

Being located in the basement of the Grange City Hotel, the only thing letting this health club…read moredown is the lack of natural light, but it is so wonderful that you can forgive them. The pool is phenomenal. It's half-Olympic length and decorated with beautiful tiles. The lighting is subdued and it's cut into three lanes so you can pick and choose how vigorous a swim you want. In addition to the sauna and steam rooms, there is an aromatherapy room where you can unwind and forget about the stresses of your day. The equipment is first-rate and best of all you never have to wait while other people finish their workouts before you can jump on the bike/treadmill/etc. This is great if you're nipping in for a workout during your lunch break. They have some new equipment, Hypoxi systems, one of which looks like an instrument of torture and one which makes you look like you've just completed a moon landing but they are supposed to be guaranteed to show great results. The instrument of torture is a bike within a box and you need to wear a special suit while working out. This one targets your bum and thighs, while the other system involves a treadmill workout while wearing the special suit with pipes running off somewhere else, concentrating on your tummy area. I don't really understand the science but the vacuum created by the suit/equipment is supposed to speed up weight loss and toning. I would love to see if it works for the baby fat I haven't managed to lose from my tummy, but at £595 for 10 sessions it's a bit out of my price range. It's not cheap - individual membership is £72 a month, but it's so far above and beyond the likes of LA Fitness or Fitness First that you can justify the additional £15 or so a month for a central London health club.

This is the gym that ate all the other gyms! Known as the jewel in the crown of the Cannons group…read more(now Nuffield Health, Fitness and Wellbeing) it is huge, so huge I've gotten a bit lost a few times. The facilities include several work-out areas, including one women only, a dedicated Pilates studio, spinning studio, squash courts, pool, lap pool, health spa area, café and Jacuzzi relaxation area. The changing rooms are massive, spread over two floors with steam room and GHDs. Folks, this place is bloody amazing, but unfortunately they still don't exercise for you. The only downside is they use a token system for some classes which can be pain if you get there late and are kicked out of class for not having one.

Please all present and future members be aware that Nuffield Health Centre cancellation policy is…read morean absolute fraud and they are great experts when it takes to steal money without offering any service: The day you join the gym they make you sign a paper where you agree with their terms and conditions, without specifying that, if you are willing to cancel you need to give 30 days notice otherwise you have to pay a full month membership fee even without using their facilities!!! The real scam is that clause 11*( the cancellation policy) is not even on that paper, but it is just hung on the wall, written with micro-characters and when I joined no one made me aware of that. Long story short, unless you bend to their fraudulent rules, they send you one or more intimidatory letters asking to pay what is due according to that clause (I learned about that policy when I first got the mail and I was incredulous) and then they pass your details to Creditlink Account Recovery Solutions Limited that starts harassing you itself. I was willing to meet them halfway so that I went to the Cousin Lane Centre myself 2 times, asking to send me an email in which they stated that I was willing to close the dispute and that this had to be communicated to C.A.R.S. but do you think I got any help/notification? The manager just kept on saying "you should have read the policy on the wall". These guys...what a great customer service they provide? I am not the only one who had the same issue with Nuffield (check the link below) so again be aware that there are a lot of gyms that survive just because they are in fact stealing money, but I have learned my lesson now, and you? http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?t=5653848

Like the masses, I joined the gym right after New Years. Given that I was "busy" with schoolwork…read moreover the past 4 months and just spent two weeks traveling around Europe, I finally felt shitty enough about myself to join the gym. It's back to BUSINESS people, I'm on a mission to be more fit than I've ever been in my entire life. Yes, I know... this will severely affect my yelping. :( GymBox is pretty nice... if I were to compare it to a restaurant, I'd say it's one of those trendy restaurants you go to for the nice atmosphere and cool decor. With that said, becoming a member comes with a price. Back in the states I was paying $30/month for a 24hour Fitness Super Sport. Right now, I'm paying about triple. How ridiculous is that?! Which is why I decided that GymBox will be my second home and I better get a bangin' body as a return on investment. Overall, you've got all the basic machines, free weights, boxing ring, and a variety of classes for anything you could possibly be interested in. You could literally spend an entire day in here and cross into multiple areas of fitness from MMA to dance to yoga to Muay Thai, etc. I've been to the Bank and Holborn location, and I prefer Bank. I believe the cardio machines at Bank are newer, however, the space is more cramped at this location compared to Holborn. On the surface, GymBox seems to be all clean and tidy and there are always people cleaning. There's so much to do here, you just have to GO and DO IT!

I love this Gym for a number of reasons! I've been a member now for two months and just extended my…read morecontract for another three months. Ambience - the colours, the attitude, the classes. The whole thing boasts, "fun, party, etc" I really like their branding and think the whole dark concept with neon colours is really cool too. They have classes with trampolines, glow sticks, and strobe lights... Like this is pretty serious guys! Location - pretty much everywhere throughout Central London. I love that! After work, I can pop over to Bank or Old Street Locations. On my days off, I can go to Stratford Or Westfield..and there are other locations as well. Service - every time I've had a qualm or question, they've been very proactive and helpful about fixing and addressing my issue straight away. Experience - Very good overall and definitely worth the money. Probably some of the best classes any gym has to offer and great teachers who really go the extra mile to communicate with you and help you reach your goals Lastly, can I just say, I purchased a locker for the first couple months when I was only at one gym and one night, I absent mindedly left my stuff in the locker and the locker undone. I came back the next day to find everything right where I left it and even my locker still there (though unlocked)! This did it for me in terms of trust and service. Excellent gym! I'd 100% recommend to everyone!

It's a serene spot up above the chaos of Old Spitalfields Market, and the coffees and smoothies are quite good. We could have gone for a small bite to eat (after our workout at a rival gym, as it turns out), but it looks like they're still working on adding food to the menu, so it's just beverages for now. In any case, this would be a great place to sit and read, relax, or chat, and it's got overhead heaters for the chillier days.

The room is large and so fit a ton of people but it didn't feel crowded at all, had plenty of space between mats. The changing room/showers are spacious and clean, have electronic lock lockers, and are stocked with cowshed products I believe, which is a nice bonus. I think you get one towel for your mat and can rent a second towel for showering after for a pound, not a huge deal, but there are some other boutique fitness spots like Ten Health & Fitness that have lovely fluffy towels and don't charge for this. At the end of the practice the instructor comes around and gives everyone a little 5 second massage/oil treatment with a cool damp towel over you which was so great and felt fabulous at the end of practice, provided you don't mind being touched. Overall this is the nicest yoga facility I've been to in the city, I've tried others like Yotopia, Fierce Grace (packed and smelly), and TriYoga Camden (stressful zoo of a changing room), and this wins for me, the super calming zen environment just feels like you are "treating yourself", I left on a cloud. I just wish there was one closer to my flat in central london, I would go weekly if I didn't have to take a tube ride to/from. Also wish they offered prenatal yoga, I would make a special trip definitely if they offered that.

Fitness first (especially in central london) has silly number of locations which means you can find one usually within 10-15 min walk if you work in central London, this is no exception, well located but it's quite small and tired. They do offer quite a comprehensive range of classes so if you are into group exercise then this is not a bad place to goto. If you're into cardio/weights then you probably will be disappointed as the gym is quite small and you may have to wait a bit (unless you goto the 'express' area tucked down/hidden away at the very very back of the gym where you will find a smaller range of equipment but generally no need to wait. With the majority of the Fitness first chain going thru re-branding & refurb this gym hopefully will get a facelift it so needed.

I was pretty satisfied with my training (no one was there in the morning :-))!
