I am giving this place 4 stars because it is a dive bar. The drinks are strong and not expensive . The bartender is efficient and straight to the point but friendly. They play a wide range of music which includes R&b and rock. They have outdoor games like corn hole and pool inside. I ordered wings 10/10 and a Hennessy & coke 10/10. Will I return? My partner and I had a very concerning experience with Powell's Pub after discovering a charge we did not recognize or believe was authorized. My partner first went to the bar in person to ask about the charge and request a copy of the receipt. According to him, the owner got in his face and suggested that he had been too intoxicated to remember what happened that night. Instead of providing the receipt, the business continued giving both of us the runaround. After my partner called me, I spent three days trying to obtain the receipt. I wanted to see the itemized charges and the signature because someone had apparently signed the receipt to authorize the transaction, and I wanted to know who had done so. On July 28, I called again. During that conversation, the owner hung up on me three times. I called back because the issue was still unresolved. He then threatened to call the police and accuse me of harassment for continuing to request the receipt. The owner asked whose card had been used. I told him it was my card and that my partner had permission to use it, but the bar did not have permission to add or approve unauthorized charges. He responded that he had not stolen my money. I told him that while he may not have personally taken it, I believed an employee may have processed an unauthorized charge and that the business was refusing to help clarify what happened. We finally received the receipt only after I explained that my partner had contacted the city to ask about the proper way to peacefully protest outside the business. I also made it clear that none of that would be necessary if Powell's Pub simply provided the receipt we had been requesting for three days. My concern was not only the amount charged. My concern was that someone appeared to have signed a receipt authorizing the charge, and we needed documentation to determine whether the signature and transaction were legitimate. Until we could review that receipt, we had no way to know who authorized it. I am sharing this experience so other customers know to review their charges carefully, save their receipts, and request documentation immediately if something does not look right. A request for an itemized and signed receipt should not require three days of phone calls, an in-person confrontation, threats involving the police, and the possibility of a public protest. read more

I checked out Powells because I did not want to go home just yet. I have been here before. It is a local casual bar and spot for food. It has unpaved parking and sits not to far from the EMU district. On the outside there is an area to play various things like corn hole. On entering there is a bar and some seating. In the back there Is a pool table and music boxes. On certain days they have karaoke and even a dj. You can tell it is mostly locals. There is a full bar and food. The staff are very friendly. It is a great spot to grab a drink and some late night food. Their wings are also great. I will check it out again. read more

This a five star review from a purely Ypsilanti nightlife perspective. Now this place is indeed a dive and small, but however it is a good time. Wednesday and Saturday (I Believe) is Karaoke night (Very Hype) and Friday night is turned into a mini makeshift nightclub (Good music/DJ and a nice crowd with something for everybody plus a little dance floor=Hype and a good time). I can also say that the drinks and beer here is cheap and will get you messed up. I have yet to have their food, but i have heard positive reviews from a few people. So if you live in this area or is a grown EMU student and have nothing to do, I definitely recommend this place to you. read more

Food is a three, not much variety and not much that will not add to the poundage. Tasty-ish but I felt a little ugh afterwards. It was not worth the guilt except maybe for those pickles. Mmmm fried pickles. Not too spendy in here, lots of food and drink specials it seems, which of course I like. Atmosphere here is congenial and local. Not too many students which is fine by an oldster like me. Other clientele were welcoming and charming to newbies, much appreciated here. Its just laid back here. No worries though, you will still get everything fairly quickly from the staff. You will likely feel right at home here right away. Pool tables and dartboards provide some entertainment beyond people watching. Trivia night definitely is of interest. I will go back, maybe to try one of those cheesesteaks that Janis's husband likes while I try my luck at trivia with James. read more

Definitely go with a group. Definitely expect a true dive bar. Crowd is definitely local and regulars so newcomers could easily feel a little out of place, but....that said, the group I was with love this place and as a group, we made our own fun and had a great night around a fire pit outside. Located at 625 North Huron Street, just off the campus of Eastern Michigan University, Powell's Pub is your a typical all-American neighborhood bar. The atmosphere is rather dive-y, but it wasn't like that years ago. Opened in early 1949 by the Beaudette family as "George's Huron Inn," this was the place to come if you wanted a nice and quiet atmosphere to enjoy a drink after a long day at work, or taking graduate classes at Michigan State Normal College, which is today Eastern Michigan University. Moreover, the food selection back then was absolutely fantastic and offered a wide variety of items. They were noted as the best place to go for seafood, especially lobster from Maine that was always fresh. What I remember best about the Huron Inn back then, was the piano playing at night. They had "Sing Along With Eddie" who would play the piano and everyone would sing with him, in a classic British Pub style setting. You name the song, Eddie could play it by ear, as he couldn't read music. Around 1970, seafood was dropped from the menu selection, and they served more of a "meat and potatoes" type of fare. However, they offered great soup and sandwich selections for lunch and dinner. George's was noted for their cheeseburgers, and it was quite common for the kids at EMU to order them for pickup. Likewise, their freshly baked bread was to die for. It was at the same time that George's Huron Inn started to become more like your typical neighborhood bar and grille. What I miss are the cute college girls in mini-skirts and Go-Go boots, who were the waitresses back then. As I write this, I wonder what happened to Cheryl and Helen who used to work there in the late 1970s? Nonetheless, those were the good old days, when you would hear college professors talking about all the places they traveled to around the world, or local politicians mentioning what projects would be coming to the area to make it a better place. read more

I'm gonna be honest: I miss Powell's. It's such a crappy dive bar that feels like an Ypsi staple. I'll take it any day over Tap Room. The food isn't fabulous but the beer is always cheap, they usually have cornhole outside, they've got pool tables and nice waitresses inside. I am always entertained when I go into Powell's. I used to go for Karaoke nights, which I miss the most. It was such a fun mix of drunk college kids, incredible underground karaoke stars, and Ypsi legends. They sell two hearted pretty cheap, and if I was like 3 drinks deep, their mozzarella sticks were pretty good too lol. I hope to one day belt it out at karaoke again and then smoke a cigarette out on their back patio. read more

Cheap strong drinks! I went to Powells to watch the MSU vs U of M basketball game on a Saturday night. I had a great time watching with the locals in Ypsilanti and of course bragging once MSU won. Very dive-y and friendly atmosphere. Definitely don't dress up to go to Powells as its a very casual house turned into a bar. read more

At Powell's, there is no pretense, no disingenuity, no sugarcoating, no craft cocktails-- just a jukebox, a pool table, and some great wings. Friendly, diverse crowd. A fixture of the Ypsilanti dive scene and a convenient stumbling distance to a large percentage of the city by area. A scenic view of Ypsilanti's industrialized rail corridor to the east from the deck/patio. Powell's is a great spot to end up. Or sometimes even a terrible spot to end up. I like it! I'm kind of jealous of Dan and Tara that they are walking distance from this bar. I'm also kind of baffled why I never discovered it while a grad student at Eastern. It's not a student bar at all, as they say, but it's right around the corner from where I always used to park, on Jarvis St. It would have been the perfect place to wind down with a drink after an evening class. I appreciated dive-ery just as much then as now, and I'd like to think that I wouldn't have been a young fool (maybe a mid-twenties fool?), but perhaps I was just not ready yet to discover the totally laid back, accepting, sometimes entertaining (in that friendly-but-non-threatening drunk guy in a Carhartt jacket way) haven that is Powell's. I ran into a random friend (other than the friends I was meeting) there as well, which says good things to me. Oh, also -- please note the black-light carpet. I have no idea why it's there, but it makes me think of a bowling alley, and I am somehow charmed by this. Extra points. Yep, it's smoky, but the servers were plenty nice, and Monday night trivia (which is said to be a different crowd from most nights) was super-fun. I'll be back, for sure. Get Danielle out from behind the bar! Sure she is young and easy on the eyes but terrible at customer service! Dives like this one cannot afford to lack good customer service. Ive seen it a hundred times, bars will stock up on girls that the "regulars" are attracted too. But the creepy regulars that will spend money in there everyday are greatly outnumbered by those that are willing to come in and enjoy the drinks, atmosphere and food for the great customer service provided. Danielle was not attentive at all. showed a great deal of concern to her phone and was playing on it the whole night. I was going to ask for a refill but she played on her phone in front of me for about 5 mins. then she started to move around so I thought to myself (oh yippee, maybe I will get my drink now)... nope she was in a hurry looking for a charger for her phone.. This place is your standard neighborhood dive. It's exactly as good or bad as that description sounds to you. They have a pool table, electronic darts, free WiFi (which I'm using to write this now--hooray!) and occasional DJs and karaoke. A pitcher of "Powell's Pilsner" (promoted with the same poster that Banfield's uses for Genny Light) is a buck fifty less than a name-brand pint at Conor's. How are you going to resist that? Don't expect hipster students, although I'm sure at least a couple of people in here now (including one of the bartenders) are "non-traditional" students at EMU. Cheap drinks. Tasty burgers. I suspect the fries are frozen and baked, but I'm willing to look past that. If you're expecting more from a local hang you'll probably be disappointed, but as a solid, dependable place to quench your thirst, Powell's covers all the necessary bases. read more

All of the other locals were friendly, and many a times Rick Powell came out to celebrate. There was always someone to play pool with, drinks were cheap. I miss this place greatly. Still 4.75 stars, but I have to give the food a bit more attention! It's a limited menu, but the fried pickle spears are my favorite deep-fried thing these days. Definitely the best fried pickle in town (that means something in Ypsi). Sometimes they run a $10 pizza and pitcher combo, and really, the pizza is good. I prefer the thin crust, but I tried the thick crust last weekend and found it had a nice flavor. Again, burgers are not so great, but I'm basically avoiding burgers altogether these days. read more

Mondays there is trivia with a chance of winning gift certificates if you place in the top three, wed and sat there is karaoke, fridays there is a dart tournament, and sundays the pub offers free pool. On top of all that there is a friendly wait staff, great burgers, and cheap drinks. $6 pitchers after 6, if you're drinking on a budget this is definately the place to be. read more

Powell's "Pub" is really more of a local neighborhood bar, kind of divey. They have a pool table and darts. It's my understanding that they host karaoke a couple nights a week, but I've never been there for it. Drink prices are reasonable, though you won't find any exotic microbrews here. Though it's very near the Eastern Michigan University campus, the clientèle leans toward 30-something and 40-something couples and singles rather than students. On a recent visit with a friend, we sat on some tall stools drinking beer and chatting. Toward the end of our stay, a drunk gentleman who appeared to be one of a group of regulars offered to buy us drinks, for no apparent reason. We turned him down since we both had to drive home, but I guess that tells you something about the friendliness of the customers. read more

4/14/2022. Arrived at location at approx. 6pm. looking to have a beer at an icon dive bar which it is great, luv it for that. Upon walking in the side door, it was pleasant to see all the cigarette buts left behind on the windows sills from the smokers no Biggie though people still smoke. Figured we sit at the bar and get ample service sitting there upon waiting for the bartender to finish the conversation with her peeps to eventually order the first round. All good so far..I was thinking man I just finished a 10 hour day and I always crave some French Fries to help with some cold beers. Well, no menu was ever offered etc. meanwhile I see they had a shift in change in so I was privy to watch one of the bartenders smash some food down from the kitchen Oh really!! in and out of the kitchen before he went behind the bar. Meanwhile, we were able to get a second round...thankfully! However, after that we sat there like we did not exist..we had empty glasses for awhile. Finally, it was really interesting one of the locals, Stan, was asked 3 times what do you want..WTF. is he the owner I hope not.. I hope Stan, Stan, Stan OMG am I really hearing this while we are sitting here with empty glasses. In conclusion, we had to request our bill from the french fry eating bartender and left.. I get a college dive bar etc. but really!! So glad we went to Depot Town after to have a great meal and drinks every where we went. Went over last evening for the first time. Parking lot needs serious snow and ice removal, very treacherous conditions. It also was somewhat difficult to locate the entrance door. Once inside we found a small, friendly neighborhood bar. I do mean friendly. We were greeted as if we were regulars. Pool tables, dart boards, video somethings and flat screens cover one wall and area. Small amount of table seating. The bar is long with ample seating and seems to be a preferred area by the regulars. Not a big selection of draft beer,but I was happy with the Bell's Winter White. The food choices are most definately bar food fare. If fried and or microwave is not to your liking eat first or after your visit here. I personally enjoyed it and highly recommend the combo appetizer basket. It consists of onion rings, chicken fingers, mini tacos and cheesesticks. This is a dive bar if there ever was one. It looks like my parent's creepy basement in the early 80's when I was afraid to be down there alone. Wood paneling, old carpet, dusty dusty dusty. This place could use a good scrub down, I could see where drinks had spilled and ran down the outside of the bar unnoticed by the staff. I peeked into the kitchen which was exactly what I expected, crumbs all over the counter top and the floor was screaming for a broom. The top of my table had sticky spots all over it. I can't believe a germophobe like myself is about to say this... I actually really liked the place. The servers were attentive and friendly, the other patrons in the bar were having a great time and enjoying their food that actually looked pretty good. I went on Monday which looks like taco night, I saw several people eating and enjoying their tacos. The drinks are cheap, $6 for a pitcher of Bud Light, two for $7 shot specials, $3 bacardi drinks. They have darts, pool, golden tee, an electric jukebox, and megatouch at the bar. If you're a smoker they have a back porch for you now, I think it's still pretty obvious that the place was filled with smoke since the day it opened until late 2009. I played trivia, which I did terrible at, but I had a good time hanging out in this neighborhood bar with a friendly vibe. I can see why the students would rather go to B Dubs or to Ann Arbor, but that's just another bonus as far as I'm concerned. I look forward to going back. read more

I was a long time customer of Powell's until they shorted my change and accused me of lying. Shelly and the owner Tony treated me horribly. I will never step foot on the dive bar again. Powell's is a bar where drinkers drink and people have fun. I can see people giving Powell's less than 5 stars because it doesn't fit their ideal but to me Powell's is one of only a couple of true bars in Ypsilanti. The reasons I give Powell's five stars is: * The owners loves the bar and appreciate their patrons * The Food is excellent. That doesn't take into account how inexpensive it is. * Karaoke and Trivia bring fun crowds. * There is a diverse group of patrons - its a microcosm of Blue Collar Ypsilanti where everyone gets along. * Great place for a couple of friends to watch football - Sloppy Joe Specials on Saturday and Hot Dog Specials on Sunday. * Free Popcorn The only drawback to Powell's is the second hand smoke but that will go away soon enough. read more

Definitely not a trendy place. It's your basic local bar which makes it outstanding. There are no high end mixed drinks. Basic beers with about 8 on tap including a few craftier ones. But bud light and blue light are on tap too. We had wings and burgers and would definitely order again. The bar has keno, couple pool tables, darts, and golf game. Low key atmosphere. I visited Powell's Pub for trivia night with a group of friends, and had a poor experience in a sketchy bar. For anyone who's interested in visiting Powell's be aware that it's a dive bar that isn't too welcoming to newcomers. To start, parking is in a dirt lot next to the bar that's littered with potholes. When you enter the bar, you'll notice that there's minimal seating, dim lighting, a pool table and a lengthy bar. We sat near the back of the bar since we were getting some weird looks from the regular patrons, and ordered some appetizers to share. The onion rings I got tasted okay, but were few in number and significantly overpriced. We ended up winning trivia as a group, and a number of competing groups gave us dirty looks and cursed loudly at us. I ended up laughing really hard because it was such a ridiculous response, which seemed to frustrate them further. Overall, I would avoid Powell's Pub entirely since its food tasted low-quality and the crowd was unexpectedly sketchy and hostile. read more
