After a night in Exeter, we got up early on a rather gray and rainy day and drove over to Powderham Castle. We were a little uncertain that we'd be following through with our plan because the rain was turning into a mini storm of sorts and we donned our raincoats and wielded umbrellas and emerged from our rental and trekked through the gravel and grass to the rustic ticket counter. After purchasing our tickets, we walked up a lovely walk and through the entrance over the the gift shop to, first, get out of the rain, and second, to wait for our tour guide.
Our guide ended up being a funny and quirky lady who led us through the house, up and down steps and halls and down to the kitchen. I really wish we were able to take photos because there were some wonderful things to see and worth remembering. At the end of the tour, we stopped the cafe out front for some hot cocoa and pasties and then wandered through the lush, green grounds. The rain had let up but the clouds were still present and made for lovely photographs.
If you don't care about historical homes/castles (not sure why you wouldn't) but you enjoy gardens and sprawling green, you should definitely make the trip to Powderham, read more
