Bogoff was originally a general contractor and cabinet maker before he took up home brewing as a hobby in 1991. He and Lalli would soon realize that they both had a passion for quality beer, so they decided to open their own brewery. They had a dream to introduce premium lager drinkers to the world of quality craft beer. The location they picked in South Deerfield to house their new operation was a former cigar manufacturing plant. By word of mouth, and taste buds, their flagship beer "Steel Rail Pale Ale" became an instant success with beer drinkers in Western Massachusetts. All BBC beer is unfiltered, unpasteurized, and contains no chemical additives or preservatives. Lalli would leave the business after 20 years, but Bogoff continues to grow the company. BBC is now one of the largest craft breweries in New England. My wife and I first visited Berkshire Brewing Company in April 2014. This was one of the first craft breweries that we ever visited and toured. It's relatively close to the popular Yankee Candle Village. At that time, tours were only done on Saturdays at 1:00 PM sharp. Our tour guide was Bob Migliaccio, who was the brewmaster at that time. He asked everyone to simply call him 'Brewmaster Bob'; he was quite the character. We were really impressed with the facility and all of the equipment. As you can imagine, customers were treated to generous samples of beer in the 'Dick Schatz' Tap Room. Schatz was a retired volunteer who worked at BBC until he passed away in 2006. He donated his large collection of beer memorabilia to the brewery and it now adorns the taproom. Not only did customers get to sample several of BBC's mainstays, but even some experimental beers that weren't available to the general public. My favorite BBC offerings would have to be "Green Gown Double IPA", "Drayman's Porter", "Coffeehouse Porter", and "The Russian Imperial Stout". Although several New England craft breweries have come and gone over the years, BBC has persevered for nearly 30 years and I hope that they continue to brew excellent brews for several more years.

What I'm trying to get at here is Tree House Brewing Company, for any avid beer drinker who knows their stuff, lives up to all the hype and wonder that it is. My wife and I visited Tree House last weekend and had a fantastic time. I'm just sad it's over. Can we go back? Now? First, I gotta give the wife a shoutout because it was her idea to swing up to the OG spot of Tree House in Charlton, MA when we were going to be near-ish by. Between not being a beer drinker and also being currently pregnant, my wife normally has minimal drink options at a place that makes its name in alcohol, but Tree House is all encompassing when it comes to liquid love. Beer, spirits, seltzers, sodas, and coffee can be found here all under the moniker of Tree House. Plus this place is so massively wonderful in seating indoors and outside that it can be a place to take a few small cherubs as you partake in the wonder of it all. Something to note for the future. The true wonder for me comes in two waves. Wave 1 is just the sheer amount of beers available from Tree House right on tap. Two bars split you up between the go-to IPAs and stouts while the other bar has more traditional lager and beer options. There aren't flights at Tree House, but no staff member (all were so friendly and welcoming) will stop you from tasting a whole bunch of brews before landing on your full pour. Wave 2 is the can ordering and pick-up. If you're like me, when you catch Tree House cans around the area at a beer distributor, it can be like seeing a unicorn. You grab them and you'll pay any price to obtain a few because you know how coveted they are and how tasty they're going to be. If you're not aware of this, it might amaze you to watch people take handcarts full of beer off to their car. For the selection and price, this is a must...well, I got 20 cans (and some coffee cans too) so maybe not a full handcart for me, but it's so tempting to not want to. Beyond those waves of wonder you'll just find everything you want at a brewery and more. Tree House swag runs rampant and you could easily walk out with Tree House garb from head to toe via shirts, stickers, keychains and stemware. As mentioned, the setup is so stellar with Adirondack chairs spread around overlooking the whole Tree House campus. Nothin' is better than that, except maybe their pizza. Come during the week and you can experience some really stellar slices at their slice shop. This is apparently closed on the weekends, but food trucks take their place so you'll definitely still find some grub to offset the hops. You'll win at Tree House no matter what. Overall, Tree House Brewing Company is everything you hope to get from a brewery with aspects you might not even expect. I mean, I probably should mention I came on a Friday right at opening and experienced all of this wonderment early on so perhaps, as some report, later on a Friday evening or a weekend day might result in a more crowded feel, but I'll vouch for a during the week trip if you can make it happen. Because once you stroll up and get a whiff of what is being brewed inside of Tree House, you'll know it truly is your beer hero...even if it's not a person.

Powder Hollow Brewery is a craft brewery that opened in Enfield, Connecticut in November 2014. It…read morewas founded by Michael McManus. He graduated from Vermont Technical College with a degree in construction engineering and soon began working for a large commercial contracting company. Since his teenage years, McManus had dreamed of opening his own company. Home brewing had been a hobby of his since he was 19. Eventually McManus joined forces with head brewer Lance Boylan to open his own brewery. A circa-1929 building in the Hazardville section of Enfield was obtained to house the new brewery and taproom. The property was once home to the Hazard Powder Company. The company (and the neighborhood) were named for Colonel Augustus George Hazard. They were one of the largest producers of gunpowder throughout the 19th century (producing 40% of the Union Army's supply during the Civil War). The company closed down in 1913 after a major gunpowder explosion. McManus named his new brewery "Powder Hollow" as a tribute to the history of Hazardville. A secondary taproom opened in downtown Middletown in November 2019 but closed this past March due to the effects of the pandemic. Another taproom opened at the Yankee Candle Village in South Deerfield, MA in September 2020 and continues to do well. I first visited Powder Hollow in 2015 when they were still fairly new. I remember really liking the Civil War decor around the taproom. Recently the brewery invited me back to taste some of their newer brews that have debuted in the past year. There have been some changes since my last visit. In 2018, McManus' sister Michele McAuliffe and her husband Mark opened R Dee Winery right next door to the brewery. They removed the wall separating the two businesses so that now it is one larger taproom. During my visit, I was helped out by the brewery's Marketing & Events Manager Kenzie. She was very helpful and discussed the different brews that I would be sampling. Some of the offerings I sampled included their Honey Brown Ale, "Spring Ahead" Pale Ale, "Josie's Pale Ale", New England DIPA, "Lift Your Kilt" (Scottish Ale), New England Citra IPA, "Bayonet Blonde", and West Coast Style IPA. The "Spring Ahead" and the Citra IPA were my two favorites. I purchased some cans of the latter to take home. I would have liked to sample some of the wines at R Dee as well, but they were closed during my visit. Just another reason to come back. I enjoyed my visit to Powder Hollow as well as the history lesson. I look forward to returning!
