Powder Hollow Brewery is a craft brewery that opened in Enfield, Connecticut in November 2014. It was founded by Michael McManus. He graduated from Vermont Technical College with a degree in construction engineering and soon began working for a large commercial contracting company. Since his teenage years, McManus had dreamed of opening his own company. Home brewing had been a hobby of his since he was 19. Eventually McManus joined forces with head brewer Lance Boylan to open his own brewery. A circa-1929 building in the Hazardville section of Enfield was obtained to house the new brewery and taproom. The property was once home to the Hazard Powder Company. The company (and the neighborhood) were named for Colonel Augustus George Hazard. They were one of the largest producers of gunpowder throughout the 19th century (producing 40% of the Union Army's supply during the Civil War). The company closed down in 1913 after a major gunpowder explosion. McManus named his new brewery "Powder Hollow" as a tribute to the history of Hazardville. A secondary taproom opened in downtown Middletown in November 2019 but closed this past March due to the effects of the pandemic. Another taproom opened at the Yankee Candle Village in South Deerfield, MA in September 2020 and continues to do well. I first visited Powder Hollow in 2015 when they were still fairly new. I remember really liking the Civil War decor around the taproom. Recently the brewery invited me back to taste some of their newer brews that have debuted in the past year. There have been some changes since my last visit. In 2018, McManus' sister Michele McAuliffe and her husband Mark opened R Dee Winery right next door to the brewery. They removed the wall separating the two businesses so that now it is one larger taproom. During my visit, I was helped out by the brewery's Marketing & Events Manager Kenzie. She was very helpful and discussed the different brews that I would be sampling. Some of the offerings I sampled included their Honey Brown Ale, "Spring Ahead" Pale Ale, "Josie's Pale Ale", New England DIPA, "Lift Your Kilt" (Scottish Ale), New England Citra IPA, "Bayonet Blonde", and West Coast Style IPA. The "Spring Ahead" and the Citra IPA were my two favorites. I purchased some cans of the latter to take home. I would have liked to sample some of the wines at R Dee as well, but they were closed during my visit. Just another reason to come back. I enjoyed my visit to Powder Hollow as well as the history lesson. I look forward to returning!

This is a nice little brewery in Enfield. I was there last night, on a Thursday. It wasn't very busy at all, maybe about 10 people total. I liked the variety of beers they offered, my favorites are the sours, I had the Cherry sour and the Raspberry sour, these are just what I like, my favorite is the Raspberry. They offered a variety of board games to play. There was also trivia, which I didn't play, but I noticed it was board game themed. They also have food trucks and a good amount of parking available. This is a nice brewery, with pleasant staff. I'd gladly visit Powder Hollow again.

Location: it's bit far not too bad. It's in Enfield. Parking: plenty which is good and well marked Flights: we tried West coast IPA- not to my taste Tangerine pale ale - not my taste Hop hazard double IPA- not citrusy 1929 porter, lift your kilt - not to my taste Mango milkshake- only one which was little to my taste. We like citrusy IPAs and these weren't but mango milkshake was still okay. We found a Groupon for two flights and a free pint glass for $14.5 and Groupon had some more savings coupons so we were elated to try all on their board for $10.

Impressed with this brewery more than I thought would be. Unfortunately I had a preconceived idea before I set foot inside and this was my mistake. Warm and inviting, the employees were very knowledgeable and I was impressed with the tap list and the amount of varieties that were canned. For my flight I tried a amber ipa, DIPA and a pale ale. All were solid except for the pale ale which I did not care for. The space is small but there is plenty of seating and tvs to watch. We brought snacks and had not problem setting up and enjoying our brews. It's a bit out of the way but worth the trip if you are in the area. File this under preconceived notions are not always right!

Great little spot nearby that I like to go to everyone in a while. The staff is nice. They have food trucks and events lined up each month. Aside from beer they also have a wine selection as well.

I came here on a Saturday afternoon to enjoy the nice weather, sit outside and have some wine. The brewery is attached to a winery and in an industrial building, which shares the outdoor seating in the parking lot. The ladies inside were very friendly and offered up some recommendations based on the weather and what was new. The flight was so reasonable for the amount of beer you get, I'd definitely recommend it! Overall good beer, an interesting location but friendly people and a food truck outside.

I've had Powder Hill bookmarked for quite a while, and as we knew we'd be running errands in East Longmeadow and Enfield, we decided that today would be the day to stop in. We figured to be there at lunchtime, and from reading the reviews I knew there was a possibility that food trucks might be on site. I called in the morning and the recording said you can text with any questions. So I texted and asked if they'd have food trucks there (Saturday). A minute later, they responded that they wouldn't. Pretty great customer service! I liked that a lot. So we grabbed some food at Hot Table and made our way to the commercial complex where PHB is located. We saw a large bar with plenty of bar stools in a room with maybe eight tables - very spacious and comfy. There is another room in the back with more tables. The beer varieties, prices, and growler options are posted on a blackboard behind the bar. I had a $6 flight of four beers - Bayonet Blonde 6.2%, Powder Hollow Pale 6.5%, Raspberry Revolution 5.4%, and Strawberry Fields 6.1%. I didn't care for the fruit based beers at all, but enjoyed the first two. Oddly, the service wasn't that great, the server behind the bar was more interested in talking to a gent at the bar than helping us, and when I returned the flight glasses and the wood paddle holder to the bar, she was so deep in conversation that she never looked up, and never acknowledged me, let alone thank us for our business.

Stopped in here on a Tuesday evening to conduct an Ale tasting! The inside has a rustic barn feel to it - which is cool. They don't serve food here - other than offering some bags of chips. I saw some folks bring their own food in with them - for example a pizza. You get to choose four ales per flight. So for the first flight - I went with all Ales: West Coast Citrus IPA (8.3% ABV) Powder Hollow Pale Ale (6.5% ABV) Hoppy Hollow IPA (7.5% ABV) Lift Your Kilt Scottish Ale (5.0% ABV) After I completed that flight - I went back for a second flight and this time opted for dark beers: Black Powder Stout (Dry Irish Stout) (4.8% ABV) Mellow Mayhem (Russian Imperial Stout) (8.7% ABV) Robust Porter (6.3% ABV) Early Morning Oatmeal Stout "Nitro" (5.2% ABV) I enjoyed tasting all of them. My absolute favorites were the West Coast Citrus IPA, Hoppy Hollow IPA, and the Black Powder Stout. There were a few other ales on tap that I did not get the chance to try. I met the brewmaster - a young guy named Mike. I told him he is going a great job!

I found this brewery on Groupon and they had this special deal for two so I had to go check it out! The place actually opened at 3PM and I didn't realize that until I left and got there a tad bit early. Totally my fault. But when I got there and walked in, the place had only 3 older gentlemen, sitting and drinking their beers which turned me off for a second. I thought I was lost but any who, got greeted by the bartender and that was it.... It was awkward standing there so I just sat myself down. Sat down for like 5-10 mins without getting asked for help or anything so I had to go up to the bar area to get what I wanted. This place is MOST DEFINITELY more for local residents/older crowd. For the beers itself, I really enjoyed the CT Brewski, Porter and Bayonet Blonde. *free food every Thursday at 6PM*

I stopped by here this past Wednesday by myself in order to try some beers. Whenever I visit Hartford I like to try new breweries and so happened upon Powder Hollow because it was the closest one to me that was open on a Wednesday that I had yet to try. The inside of this place is decent sized with a bar on one side and a bunch of tables on the other. There's lots of wood as the floors are hardwood, the tables are wood, the walls are planks of wood and there is an exposed wood ceiling too. They have a number of games stacked up that you can play and it looks like they are about to share their spare with a winery which I think is really cool. Whenever I arrived just before 6 PM on a Wednesday the 8 person bar was actually full and so was another table. Pretty impressive for a random weekday at a beer only brewery. As I often do whenever I visit a new brewery, I went with a sampler here. At Powder Hollow this is 4 samples (no restrictions) for $7. I ended up going with their Lift Your Kilt (Scottish Ale), Extra Super Bangin' (ESB), Lime Basil NIPA, and Hop Hazard Double IPA. I started out with Scottish Ale and thought that it tasted good although the flavors were a bit muted. That can probably be attributed to its somewhat low for a Scottish Ale 4.7% ABV. Next up for me was the ESB which had quite the interesting flavor, at least for an ESB. It was very hop forward and had a sort of piney flavor to it that left an extra bitter taste after the finish which I can't say I necessarily cared for. I will saw it is true to the name of bitter though. Up third for me was the Lime Basil NIPA. This was probably my favorite beer here as I got Lime on the first that gradually moved into a hoppy flavor and finished with a hint of the basil. Last but certainly not least was the DIPA. It started off somewhat sweet before moving to a slight bitterness which was nice and somewhat surprising considering it clocked in at 9.2% ABV. The bottom line for me is that I would stop by here in the future. Powder Hollow Brewing has an interesting mix of beers and I would be interested in trying more of their product.

This brewery was gorgeous. We loved the Raspberry Sour Beer and Lift your Kilt IPA. You're able to order food inside from a pizza "window" which is in the same room as the brewery. The pizza was alright, but the clam chowder and Mac and cheese was delicious! A perfect little date spot after shopping at Yankee Candle or just getting out of the house!

My 4 brew fright for a very reasonable $7.

I've never really tried Italian style but enjoyed IPAs, stouts, pilsners etc. I made it a point to stop in and try the beers. Now this was a few years ago. When I had first stopped in their opening week I tried the beers and thought they were ok at best. However, I know that first openings cannot be a final judgement for breweries as things are getting dialed in and most places are using new setups to make the beer. So I waited about a month and went back and was blown out of the water by the difference in what I initially tried versus what they were making now, the beer was phenomenal and I have been going back since, stopping in when I can. The brewery itself, while on the smaller size is very cozy, clean and nicely decorated. They offer various areas including high tops, standard tables and couch areas ( as well as outdoor seating during warmer months) Every-time I have stopped in they have had a food truck offering available as well as a Chinese restaurant right next door. They also have snacks inside so they have a few options for food. All in all, it's a great place, awesome vibe and some really good brews. Definitely worth a stop in. (Also, they offer beers for veterans. I always make it a point to buy a veteran a beer when I stop in, and yes you can prepay for one)
