The Lights Festival

The Lights Festival

(3 reviews)

I was extremely disappointed with the support provided for this festival…read more I purchased tickets for Austin's Lights Festival earlier in February (10th) and it ended up raining hard that day. Fortunately I had purchased the event insurance in case I couldn't go. Remarkably, the event was not cancelled even though it was raining cats and dogs that day. I submitted my refund request for a refund first thing in the morning just to be safe. I got an automated reply saying that someone would get back to me within 48 hours but I never received any reply. Two weeks later, I followed up with another email but again I never heard anything back. Today, I followed up with a third contact but I'm not expecting to hear anything back at this point. I purchased the insurance, so the fact that they took off with my money is especially frustrating. I believe that my only recourse at this point is to call my bank and dispute the charges if it's not too late by now.

This was my first time to a Lantern Festival. So, this was a…read morelantern festival..where you release lit lanterns into the sky, just like in Rapunzel's movie. I've seen this type of festivals being advertised for a few years now. This company is a competitor of The Lanterns festival, It was about 40 miles from my house. Lantern was supposed to be released into the sky by 6pm. The last mile into the venue took 1 hour drive. I kid you not. During that last mile, we were in the car from 4.30pm till 5.30pm when we pulled into the parking lot, worrying if we could make it on time for the lantern release. Then it was a long walk to the registration booths. It was really dark and muddy, not a fun walk at all. What they call registration was really a place where you exchanged your ticket for a lantern. They didn't scan the tickets, if I wanted to go back to another booth and ask for more lantern, they would have given it to me for free. The person who handed me the lanterns didn't seem to know what he was doing. He gave me a lantern, then I had to ask for a marker. When I asked for a lighter, he said they didn't give out a lighter and just for me to use lit tiki torches around the venue to light up lanterns. I felt weird because I bought tickets for my kids aged 4-12, and they are supposed to get something (toys or whatever). But when I asked about it, they gave me a confused look and I was confused too, not knowing for sure what it was my kids were supposed to get. Used my cellphone to search online and the website on the first page, it says what we get is only lantern, and a marker so I let it go. Later at home, if I pretended to buy a ticket, then at the bottom of the page it says Kids get a little Fun Kit, which my kids didn't get. So I say they are not organized. Reading online reviews, the Lantern festival (the competition) actually gives out s'mores packets, hand out lighters, and have fire pits for making smores. I didn't realize the Lights Fest (this company) didn't give out smores packets. I had promised my kids they would make smores, so they were a little disappointed. The lantern release, in the end they started at 6.30pm. Although it was nice, it lasted only 20 min. Because we didn't bring a lighter, given this was our first time, my SO had to beg other people to borrow a lighter so we can release the lantern. We had 4 lanterns, of which we threw away the last one because he was tired of begging different people for a lighter. There were simply not enough lit tiki torches. In fact, when we were walking into the venue, we saw many (more than 30) tiki torches just laying on the ground doing nothing, the organizers didn't use them. One person used a microphone instructing people on how to light the lantern. But nobody was going around giving instructions to make sure people do it right and it was many people's first time. If you release it too early, it does not fly up to the sky, and it flies onto people's head. We are talking about fire here. Since the whole thing lasted only 20 min, while we had to beg people for lighters multiple times, tried to release it right (4 lanterns, one we didn't light up, two flew into the sky, another one got burnt), we could take only a few good pictures. Not even 20 pics. I hope this review helps people so they can decide if they want to go or not. Keep in mind you seem to get more bang for your buck if you go to the Lantern festival because they give out smores package, and lighters/matches.
