Everything is made to order, and you can get a freshly grilled burger (fresh meat, not frozen) with toppings of your choice for less than $5. I think I only paid another $1.50 to have a double patty. Lots of options, for example getting a steamed hot dog for less than $2, having it grilled for about 50 cents more, or even a chili dog. Everyone I was with loved the burgers and hot dogs ordered.
But it's called 'La Pataterie' for a reason. The fries (from potatoes if you follow the name) were easily some of the best I've ever had. And for the price there isn't even competition. Absolutely perfect crispy texture, and pillowy soft in the middle. They taste like they were twice-fried, almost Belgian-style. There is also a nice sweetness to the potato too. Real cheese curds for the poutine and though the gravy wasn't reaching the same heights as the fries, it was still good nonetheless. But to illustrate how good the fries were, my wife and I put in an order for fries alone after we shared a poutine. I can't think of any time or place I've done that before, but the fries were just that good.
I only happened to come here since we were returning from the botanical gardens and it came up on a search. It's not necessarily a hidden gem as it's quite popular, but if this was more central, it would almost certainly find itself of 'must visit' lists, and it's probably a good thing that things stay the way they are.
