During the examination, JoAnn Lepke found a scabby area on my scalp that she said was precancerous. She told me she would freeze it and asked if that was okay. I have had small spots frozen in the past, so I agreed, expecting something similar. Once she began, however, the treatment seemed much more extensive than what I had experienced before and even became painful. As I instinctively pulled away, she explained that the area was not very wide but was approximately an inch long. This was the first time I understood the size of the area on the top of my head that was being treated. I became concerned and asked whether my hair would fall out in that area. She said "possibly." I then asked whether it would grow back, and she replied, "probably." Those answers were frightening. Had I understood beforehand the size of the area being treated and that hair loss was a possibility, I would at least have had an opportunity to ask questions and understand what was about to be done before agreeing to it. What upset me most, however, was what happened when it became apparent that I was scared. Rather than taking a moment to acknowledge my concern or explain things more fully, I was told, essentially, that this was better than having surgery, a scar (isn't a hairless patch on your head a scar as well?), or cancer. While I certainly understand the importance of treating precancerous lesions, that response felt dismissive and condescending at a moment when I was genuinely frightened. Hair plays an enormous emotional and psychological role in how a woman feels about herself. Being suddenly told, during a procedure already underway, that I might lose hair from a noticeable area on the top of my head--and that it would "probably" grow back--was extremely upsetting. I did not need my concerns minimized. I needed information and a little compassion. I am not writing this because I object to receiving necessary medical treatment. I am writing because patients deserve to understand what is being done to their bodies, including meaningful potential consequences, before a procedure begins. And when a patient becomes frightened, especially during something as inherently stressful as skin cancer screening, compassion matters. A few extra minutes of explanation, reassurance, and empathy would have made an enormous difference. Instead, I left an appointment that was supposed to protect my health feeling scared, uninformed, and emotionally shaken. I sincerely hope greater care is taken in the future to make sure patients feel informed, heard, and treated with compassion.

We are so grateful we found Dr. Sparks during our family vacation in Kauai. We first contacted him…read morefor our daughter, and from the very beginning he was incredibly thorough, patient, and educational. He took the time to explain her symptoms, the possible causes, and why he was recommending each medication, making sure we understood everything before starting treatment. A couple of days later, my husband developed painful bumps after snorkeling off the Nā Pali Coast. Dr. Sparks was able to diagnose it from photos as a Portuguese man o' war sting. My niece had the same reaction, and he helped her as well. Once again, he took the time to educate us about the local marine life, the toxins involved, what symptoms to watch for, and how the prescribed medications would help. I especially appreciated how thoughtful and cautious he was with the medications he prescribed. What really sets Dr. Sparks apart is that he truly cares. He reminded me of the kind of village doctor everyone hopes to find--knowledgeable, compassionate, reassuring, and willing to spend the time you need. His mobile service was incredibly convenient. Both my daughter and my husband felt noticeably better very quickly. If you're on Kauai and need medical care, I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Sparks. He provided exceptional care and gave us real peace of mind while we were away from home.

Truthfully, without Dr Sparks, my vacation would have been ruined. I owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude. Dr Sparks was incredibly kind and has a bedside manner I haven't encountered in medicine in quite some time. His explanations of various care options were clear and well-thought out. He is an exemplary doctor. Additionally, he was very kind about making sure there was some follow up after the appointment, and told me to get in touch if I'm ever back in the area. He will be my first call if I'm ever back on Kauai!!!!

He's equally invested in using laboratory tests, and medical technology, MRI, EEG, etc. He's had the medical experience at Queen's Hospital of urban Hawaii multi-ethnic and here on Kaua'i for the past decade plus. Regretfully, the one phone the clinic uses requires patience to navigate but you will be rewarded with a pleasant human being once you get through. You will not be able to leave a message and carry on with your day, but will have to persist in calling. As was said previously you will be able to see him within the week but not always that day. Dr Lanson is still old school--in a good way! You don't find many physicians that still do hands on examinations. Some of the newer physicians I've seen in practice are very hands off. Dr Lanson's schedule is a busy one, but I feel that I am able to get an appointment with him in the same week that I call. It may not be the same day, but they try to accommodate you to the best of their ability. He sees patients in Lihue Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and half day on Friday. On Thursday, he is in their Princeville clinic, serving the residents of the north shore of Kaua'i as well as visitors that need to be seen for any unforeseen circumstance while on vacation but not needing emergency room services.
