I rarely post reviews or feel the need too. John the owner has a short fuse and is offensive. I dropped off six posters (5 Framed and one unframed) and asked for a quote for restoring six posters. I chose to move forward with one restoration which was unframed. I sent more than $5k on the restoration. We went to pick up the posters and we found out that they had destroyed the frames of the framed posters without verbal or written permission. If a poster restorer destroys frames or art work it's a good idea to get written approval first It's worth pointing out that the framers we are using had already told us that they were entirely reusable. In fact the only poster I chose to restore was unframed. I called to talk about this and John's response "Dude I don't want to talk about your shitty frames or posters and I am going to go now" And put the phone down on me. He may need a course in Anger management. read more

Do NOT use this company! They damaged my very, very expensive signed posters. I took multiple photos of my poster the day I dropped it off and I took photos when I picked it up and the damage is clearly not there in the original photos. When I asked them what happened, they wouldn't respond to any of my messages. I called them and finally they sent me an email that said: "I'm not refunding your money, please leave me alone." With no explanation of how the damage happened and zero responsibility for their mistakes. Please don't make the same mistake I made! read more

Poster Mountain is KING. They're practically wizards. Or time travelers or who the hell knows?! It's like they went back in time and brought me back a brand new poster. I am speechless. I had a 60+ year-old 3-sheet movie poster that needed serious restoration. It had lots of paper loss, serious discoloration, fold lines, etc. This thing was in poor, POOR condition. In fact, I didn't know IF I would even be able to get it restored. I started doing my research and found a couple of spots in town that handle restoration. I took my poster to a handful of these places and no one really blew me away like John and Poster Mountain did. They've been around for quite some time and have a stellar reputation. John was super nice and attentive in taking his time to explain the process of restoration and other aspects of work that my poster needed done. He also gave me a tour of the studio and showed me some of the pieces they were handling at the time. Then he gave me an estimate on the work and it was a lot more than I expected. We had also agreed on his team taking their time with my poster. I was in no real rush to get it back. I just wanted a team of professionals to give it the delicate touch it required. So I decided to pull the trigger and go with Poster Mountain and I'm sure glad I did. I see where my $$$ went and it went to a well-deserved team of restoration experts. They are truly AMAZING. My poster was restored to its original glory. I can now display it with pride. I have a few more pieces that I will bring back to John and his team once again. On March 1st, 2024 I brought a vintage poster to Poster Mountain on the advice of my framer, Boris, to get it linen backed due to the fragile nature of the poster. I met John that day who seemed like he was doing me a favor by even looking at it for me. He made several remarks the took away my excitement for bringing to him but since he was reccomended by someone I trust I let my poster there despite my trepidation. It was a Friday and John said he would call me on Monday with more information. Monday came and went with no call. The next Monday came and went, same thing. On the 3 week mark I called to check on its status and a woman told me she would have John call me the following week. Didn't get a call. Waited another week, so on week 5 I called again and spoke to John who said how busy they were and he would call me the following week with an update. You guessed it, no call. On six weeks to the day, I went to Poster Mountain and retrieved my antique poster. John was not there. The staff found and returned my poster to me. No apology, no explanation, clearly they didn't care the least about it. So, I can't vouch for the work they do there but based on the service I received I would definitely NOT use them for anything. I collect posters and was excited to find a place locally to work on them, instead I was just frustrated and pissed off. Perhaps you had a different experience but mine was the worst. read more

Um . . . yeah . . . not a rip off. John is a craftsman. He has some unbelievable restoration talents. I haven't met the man in person, but have seen the video of his work. Friends of mine have visited his facility and reported back. I certainly didn't feel robbed for what I paid. in fact, I was quite happy with the price. Balcones, an expensive frame shop here in Austin, used tape (I had asked them not to do this) on a series of screen printed movie posters from The Alamo Drafthouse's Mondo subsidiary. Their value increased 20 times their original price over a year and then I started noticing some wrinkling and waviness. I opened up the frame with a friend and we were horrified to find 3 strips of heavy duty mat tape on the top of each poster. Posters were sent off to John and shipped back to me in just a couple of weeks. The price was more than reasonable, but that's between me and John. Tape is gone. I'm completely pleased with the results. Posters are saved. Craftsmanship doesn't come cheap. Neither does trust. If work like this was so simple, then everyone would be doing it. read more

No complaints here. I have had various things repaired by Poster Mountain, and it has all turned out great. Edit: Time has passed since my last review, and I'd like to modify it a bit now that I have learned more info about restoration and pricing. I'm going to knock a few stars off for the recent raise in pricing along with some other info I have heard. They also do not restore prints that they are not 100% certain about anymore. That said, I think PM still does great work, but I have since moved on to other restoration places that are more friendly. PM's blog is still cool, and they come up with a lot of interesting tidbits about restoration. Bottom line: Research around for other restoration places if you do not have an ultra high end vintage poster you need restored. PM does not like newer prints like Mondo prints due to the paper type, so you are better off taking your print elsewhere. read more

I LOVE POSTER MOUNTAIN! When I first arrived, I didn't even realize it was in the right place. I thought it would be similar to a frame shop, but this is a full blown laboratory in what looked like an industrial park. Once you get inside, you'll catch an eyeful of gorgeous vintage movie posters - if you see that, you're in the right place. John, the gentleman who runs Poster Mountain, is a friendly guy and his passion for poster art shows. When he unrolled my poster, it opened up backwards -- yet he knew exactly what he was looking at and was visibly excited to see it! It was a Polish movie poster so it wasn't super obvious to most who laid eyes on it. He was courteous enough to show me around the lab because I was curious about how everything is done. It's a very solid operation, no doubt. I thought the pricing was reasonable and he is very transparent about his process and what to expect. They do touchup work for an hourly rate and while I did not opt for it, there was no pressure from him or the staff to upsell. They all seemed like really cool people and I think this place offers a great service - they are helping preserve posters and art so that we can enjoy them generations from now. I will definitely do business with again if I have the opportunity. read more

I found my way to John Davis and Poster Mountain based on the recommendation of another well known restoration professional (that said a lot to me about the respect this shop commands among other professionals in the field), after I had a HORRIBLE experience with Cinemasterpieces, who charged way too much and then returned my poster damaged and refused to take responsibility for the damage and actually accused me of damaging it myself (despite several other professionals who looked at it stating it was obviously done by the restorer; AVOID). As bad as my first experience was, dealing with John at PM was thoroughly a pleasure. He listened sympathetically to me kvetch about my bad experience, and went to great lengths to ensure that the finished product was to my liking. The poster and map I sent him were over 100 years old and one of a kind, and it took a while but the finished product is pristine, which is especially impressive because he had to undo the poor restoration/linen backing by Cinemasterpieces first before he began his own work. It's been a long road but my only regret is that I didn't find Poster Mountain first. Professional work done by a good guy who stands behind his work and takes pride in everything he does. I have a large, vintage French film poster of Brigitte Bardot in Le Mepris that had become discolored in spots over the years. It is one of our favorite pieces but the aging and flaws were something we'd learned to live with. Until I found a magnificent vintage poster restoration expert in Northridge who was able to restore it to stunning effect at an excellent price within two weeks. Upon receiving hate mail from what appears to be a 5 star Poster Mountain customer, i decided to revisit this Yelp review page of Poster Mountain with NO change to my previous 1 star review. Upon reading the other reviews, it is CLEAR that Poster Mountain has asked their best customers to write 5 star reviews on their business (Thus, ALL the other reviews besides mine) I have decided to update my review ONLY to stand by my original review and prove to those that Poster Mountain truly IS a rip-off! They charge $150. JUST to linen back a 1-sheet sized poster, NOT including any type of restoration. This price can be confirmed just by visiting their website and viewing their pricing. (Although now that I have brought this to everyone's attention, it wouldn't surprise me if they lower that rate as of 9/15/13) $150. to linen back a 1-sheet poster is MORE than TWICE what MOST other poster restoration houses charge for the EXACT same process! This is proof alone that this place is a complete rip-off! And this is JUST the extorted pricing for a 1-sheet.....I haven't even mentioned ALL their other prices! And please keep in mind that ALL poster restoration houses that I am comparing this place to use the EXACT same methods and materials to linen back your poster as Poster Mountain does! (Take 5 minutes and do the research yourself online and you will see) THE BOTTOM LINE: So once again, for those that have more money than common sense will be more than happy to use Poster Mountain for their mounting and restoration needs, those that are smarter and like to save money, will wisely choose to take their prized posters elsewhere for that same, if not better mounting and restoration work. As I stated in my previous review, I will be more than happy to forward anyone a LONG list of other poster restoration houses located within California and the rest of the Country that charge a FRACTION of what this place charges and you will be just as happy, if not more happy with the work they perform. Sadly, I have to alert those who are thinking about using Poster Mountain to be extremely cautious and to place work with them only if you understand and are willing to accept the risks you are running with your materials and project if you do so. I should say that writing a review like this is very unusual for me; I have owned businesses for most of my 40 year plus career; our last company had over 150 employees when my partner and I sold it last year. We were always very strong on customer service and problem solving, which I suspect is why I am posting this cautionary notice. I am a serious collector of vintage paper ephemera; I had been searching for a firm to do restoration on some 30 pieces for me, and was initially delighted to find Poster Mountain. I want to their office, met the staff, who were great, and commissioned them (in writing) to start work on 4 items. The owner was out ill, so I left behind five more items that the staff wanted the owner, John, to review so we could determine a price and, if agreeable commission the work. After 3 weeks passed, I called to see how things were coming, and reached the owner, John, who was very pleasant over the phone. Two items were completed, he said, (and sent me pictures) and they were working on the other two at which point we would get together and decide on the remaining pieces. A couple of days later, I received an email from John with a picture of an item they were working on--he had some questions he said on how to proceed. The problem was that he was working on a wrong piece, one of those I had left behind for a bid. I was not upset at all; problems happen and I wanted to make a home with these people. I sent John the following email: John! As a friend of mine sez, there are not problems. There are just "points to consider." The point to consider is this: I didn't authorize any work to be done on Lichtefeld and Voelker; that was one of the pieces that we were going to decide on once we saw the completed work on the four items we had approved. Attached is your invoice/estimate and listing of the 4 items we approved to be done on this pass. Let's figure out what to do here, and press on. I look forward to doing a bunch of biz with you guys, but didn't want this piece done at this time...it's always SOMETHING, right? Not ten minutes later I received this email back from John: Wayne, Unfortunately the person with whom you dealt here, Chelsea is no longer with the company and I followed instructions that were left with me. These calendars are not at all straightforward and if this is really a problem for you, with all due respect then I really don't want to do business with you. And that was it. He demanded I pay a bill he then sent over (he did not charge me for the "wrong" work) and made it clear I was to pick up my half finished order and begone. I recognize and support the right of any company to do business with whomever they please, but this was a pretty amazing turn of events, generated it seems by my saying "you guys made a mistake here, but let's work it out and continue on." It's sad in the sense that the staff was great and the work they did do, although pricey, was very good, and I thought I had found a home for a lot of work. My cautionary note is this: if you decide to commission these folks, you need to bear in mind that you are taking a serious risk with your materials. Based on my experience, if everything goes O.K., you will be fine. However, if there is any problem that you as a customer bring up, no matter how pleasant or undisturbed you are about it, you need to be prepared to immediately be given a bill with a payment demand and shortly thereafter be standing on the curb holding your unfinished work. This is bad enough and a breach of trust if the item is for your own display, and worse yet if you have entrusted Poster Mountain with work that is going to be shown on a specific date. I have been in business and worked with vendors for many years; often the same vendor for a decade or more as the whole goal is to find a good company and stick with them. This is truly one of the most unusual and unprofessional episodes I have ever encountered; truly an experience with what seems to be bi-polar business behavior. Again, be very, very careful with these people and good luck with your work. read more

I have to admit I was hesitant to use anyone to restore my items, and had to feel at ease to entrust them to a stranger no matter how highly reviewed. I had seen a blog post about the wizardry of Poster Mountain restoring an Ansin Mummy, and my eyes could not believe the results. My issue was miniscule and would frame out, but knowing it was there would haunt me. John and Chelsea at Poster Mountain were very friendly, provided me with excellent communication, and put me at ease almost immediately. John answered my emails on a Sat. promptly and he went through all my questions and concerns. After receiving the prints, John immediately advised me it would frame out. He wasn't in any position to make money on the deal at that point, and I find that honesty to be quite refreshing. Poster Mountain's work speaks for itself. Although my repairs were minor and the artwork was only worth a few thousand dollars, they treated it like it was priceless, and to me it was. I'm in NJ, and I still make sure to ship everything I need to them, and I feel safe doing so. They package things immaculately, and will take their time to make sure the restoration/repair is flawless. All this at a very reasonable cost, you cannot ask for more. read more

There is another reviewer here who is complaining about the price. Fine, your point is made. Why the hysterics? If the charges were a surprise, I'd say he had a point but he doesn't so go somewhere else. I've tried other places and they either take forever or don't seem to care. I sent one set of posters back east via fedex and when I called two days later, the girl on the phone was vague, saying she "think I saw them somewh- oh here they are!" If you have vintage movie posters, they are like your children and the time away from you is a little painful. John and company make me feel like they like my projects as much as I do and then they turn around and do an incredible job. I did price around at one point and they seemed reasonable or I wouldn't have chosen them. Maybe prices have dropped but I doubt it. Anyway, this is a long winded way of saying I think they are great and I trust them with my "children". Their passion matches mine. read more

For the last 10 years, I've been storing a dozen or so movie posters in my closet. They are original posters of movies that I love. I finally decided to go ahead and have them linen-backed, so I looked for a poster restoration shop in my area. I found Poster Mountain which is near my house. That turned out to be the best decision I could have made. I called their office and spoke to Chelsea. She was very friendly and helpful in explaining what services are offered and what the estimated cost would be. All but one of my posters is very large so I knew that it would not be cheap to have them touched up and linen-backed. But the estimates I was given seemed reasonable given the prices that I've seen at other poster restoration shops online. So I went ahead and brought in four of my posters. Chelsea is just as nice in person as on the phone. She introduced me to John and his wife who are also very friendly. I think they are the owners, but I'm not sure of that. In any case, John evaluated my posters, suggested possible fixes that I might want to consider, and he and Chelsea broke down the estimates for the linen-backing (which is done before any touch up work). The prices were as expected and I left the posters in good hands. A week later, I received an email indicating that my posters were linen-backed and ready for inspection. The email contained a link to their website where I could view images of the posters and decide on the touch-up I wanted. Since I live so close, I went ahead and drove back to the shop. We went over each of the posters, and I indicated what work I wanted done. My posters are old (mostly from the 50's and 60's) so they had a number of flaws (torn edges, bleeding colors, fading, etc.). I decided what I wanted done on each poster and was given an estimate for the work.. Again, it was very reasonable and I went ahead with that. Four or five days later, I received another email from Chelsea to indicate my posters were done. I went to the shop and John and his wife pulled the posters out from where they were stored against the wall. I was blown away with how incredible the posters looked. The shop did a fabulous job in addressing all the touch-ups that I had requested. The posters really do look like works of art now. They got those posters back to me quickly (less than two weeks) and the quality of work is fantastic. What more could I ask for. I ended up taking in an additional four posters and had them linen-backed and touched up. For all eight of the posters I brought in, John returned the finished posters in plastic or cardboard tubes, carefully packaged with bubble wrap and capped at both ends. This made it very easy to transport them, and was perfect since I'm moving in a month and would have needed to pack them up anyway. I highly recommend Poster Mountain for anyone thinking of having their movie posters linen-backed or restored. My experience was universally positive and I will absolutely be giving them my return business. Since I'll be living in the Bay Area soon, I'll have to mail them any posters that I want linen-backed. However, I will do so with the knowledge that I can trust this business to treat me fairly and to do exceptional work on the posters that I love. By the way, I've never written a Yelp review before and I don't usually follow up in this way. But I had such a positive experience with Poster Mountain that I felt it was only fair to provide feedback regarding my experience. read more

Just got my very first poster back from them and it looks amazing! I did shop around for pricing, everyone seems to be pretty much the same for linen-backing, so I'm not sure what all the hubbub is about, but I'm very happy. John and Chelsea responded to my many questions and emails immediately, and they even delivered it a week sooner than they estimate. I've had several posters mounted and/ore restored at Poster Mountain, and they are simply the best. I'm an artist myself and have spent some time as a retoucher, so I know the time and care that goes into what they do. There's not a magic photoshop tool they can use to instantly repair holes and tears, match colors, eliminate fold lines, etc. This stuff takes time and great care, and John and his staff of artists deserve every penny they get. Not only do they do immaculate work, they also have a broad knowledge of conservation techniques and know what materials and procedures to employ so that your poster increases, not decreases in value. read more

Did a Movie Poster for my company a few years back for Actor Mark Harmon's surprise gift from the staff at the TV show NCIS. Was a very personal gift to Mark as it was of his "Mom & Dad" that starred long ago in a Movie. They were featured on the Movie Poster. My company framed the gift, as I do beautiful custom framing. Mark was so pleased, and told me it was done perfectly the custom framing and mounting of the poster on linen for preservation.
