I visited Portillo's early one evening. I had a coupon I needed to use from an earlier visit mixup. I went in to the store and it is tastefully decorated. There are kiosk if you want to place an order, but I traditionally like to get the vibe of the workers who greet me. I went to the counter and someone immediately came to take my order. The greeting was lackluster but ok. I was really not totally familiar with the different options and I had questions. My questions were answered appropriately but really did not understand the hot and not options. I ended up getting the hot peppers on the side. It had a tang that I'm not used to but I'm sure others might like it. My husband ordered a Combo Beef and Char Grilled Italian Sausage Sandwich and enjoyed it. He wishes he had more peppers but I think it's because it was loaded with a lot of meat. We also ordered the chocolate cake shake and that didn't disappoint us. The patty actually fits the size of the bun and is crispy. It's simple but delicious. I've had the sausage and that's good too. The onion rings are huge and ok. They serve crinkle fries. The shakes and cakes are good. I like using the app b/c they'll have bogo offers, free fries or shakes sometimes. You can order from the cashier but they prefer that you use a kiosk. The front counter cashier, Keke, was extremely warm and friendly with the guests ahead of me. She laughed, chatted, and offered helpful menu suggestions as they ordered. I thought, "Okay, I like her vibe!" But when it was my turn, things shifted. I approached with the same upbeat energy, even mentioning that it was my first visit and that I'd been referred by a Yelper from Illinois, something I thought was worth sharing, given Portillo's Chicago roots. Unfortunately, that enthusiasm was met with a noticeably cold and indifferent attitude. It caught me off guard, and I decided to cut the small talk short and just place my order. Decided to dine at the Willowbrook location on a Saturday evening. Arrived, and entered. The location was not busy at all during prime dinner period. That is always concerning. Location was clean, well lit, and somewhat loud due to the lack of sound mitigation, concrete floors and not unusual. We ordered from the Kiosk and paid. Nearly $40.00 (USD) on credit card for fast food. Noted, expensive, but not unexpected. We looked forward to excellent food. Found a table and the wait for our order wasn't unusually long. Fountain drinks were over carbonated, so basically awful. Cheeseburger meal was hot, but there are better burgers are close by. Meat slapped haphazardly on a cold bun. Not a favorite, and really not even in the range of a more modest chain burger. Fries were average, while priced at a premium They were soggy and not as shown on their kiosk menu. The Italian beef was OK, but lacked any seasoning, protein was gray and stringy. The hot peppers were less than a tablespoon, and the sandwich was way too wet, and therefore a great disappointment. No seasoning, bread was literally falling apart. Also, not as shown on their kiosk menu. A high note, the onion rings were good. Crispy, hot, and although we ordered a large, most of the onion rings were small. Overall, our experience was not anything to brag to friends about or visit with. Cannot say that Portillo's is worth travelling out of your neighborhood for. Portillo's does hype themselves and is aware that their prices are inflated, but flashy signs, and a garage theme doesn't overshadow that food is the real reason customers come through the doors. When the (average) onion rings are the star of the show, that is bad. Everyone has to learn and have their first job. But do that job with pride, and dedication. Premium ingredients, attention to detail, and customer service. None of those were involved in our order. Not one person said a word to us, and partied in the back. That is fine, enjoy it. We will party elsewhere. Vote with your wallet, and better franchise restaurants are within a minute's walk away. Best of luck to them. read more

Went pretty late (around 10pm-ish) and it was a little confusing. I pulled up to the drive thru and they told me to order at the second window (which was a door that was kept open). The only issue is we'd have to memorize what we wanted because there was no menu at the window door place. The food itself was good for a place open that late. I had: Chocolate cake shake: 4/5 Really good but a little too thick. It felt like the ratio might have been off a bit. Like eating a delicious cake with a straw. Spicy chicken sandwich: 5/5 this was so amazingly delicious. Incredibly spicy (and I can usually tolerate spicy). I'm torn because I would want to order this again but I struggled to eat it due to the spiciness. Next time I might try the regular chicken sandwich with that Giardiniera sauce (it's delicious). Fries: 2/5 way too salty and kind of seemed old. They were just okayish. Cheese sauce: 3/5 also just okayish. I think it was slightly better than the fries and it helped putting it on the spicy chicken sandwich when the spice was just really making me struggle. I was happy to see this new eatery open up in the Willowbrook area and recently dined there twice. It has its own large parking lot so parking is never a problem. Inside it's spacious and has covered outdoor seating too along with it being counter service. They have a twin lane drive thru for to go orders if you can't stay. First visit was to try an Italian beef sandwich combo for $13 that came with fries and a soft drink. I had them add sweet peppers and some mozzarella for $.75 each. After visiting the self serve drink station, I waited about 5 minutes for my number to be called and picked up my food. The interior of this restaurant is attractively decorated with several references to Houston and Texas as well and with plenty of seating. The sandwich was served on a 8" roll and had plenty of tasty Italian beef, gooey cheese and sweet peppers making it tasty and pleasurable to eat. The crinkle cut fries were hot, salty and good too. It was a very good meal and affordable. I returned about a week later to try another one of their specials, the cheeseburger combo for about $12. This price was for the single patty combo version and I subbed the fries for onion rings for $1 more. The burger consisted of a grilled hand formed beef patty on a nice bun dressed with a large lettuce leaf, tomato and of course melted cheese. It was very good. The onion rings were battered and delicious too. Again, a very good meal at a reasonable price in a nice atmosphere. Portillo's Willowbrook is a quality fast food restaurant that I will visit often. The french fries are always crispy & fresh. Restaurant itself is beautifully decorated. There are indoor and outdoor dining options. There is also a drive-thru. If yelp had an option to pay a monthly subscription fee to give this place less than a 1 star review, I'd pay it. When they first opened it wasn't half bad. I wouldn't bring someone I hoped to continue a strong relationship with there, but for a quick bite it was fine, relatively bland and unremarkable. I opened it and tried to pull the burger out as quick as I could, since it appeared to be treading water and suffering exhaustion. It was too late to perform CPR. The sopping wet bun fell apart in my hands while the contents of the burger (unseasoned meat, cheese, with some lettuce and tomato that looked ripe to be thrown away 2 days ago) skated in every direction possible to try and escape the grasps of their bun confinement. The roast beef that my companion ordered looked like prison food in some alternate universe where seasoning is illegal. It was clear why the place looked abandoned. Tried this spot on Friday. Its off 1960 near Willowbrook next to Olive Garden. It looks like a sit down restaurant from the street side but it is a fast food establishment with a drive thru. We went inside and they have kiosk to order or traditional counter service. Food was unique for Houston fast food they had hot dogs, Italian beef sandwiches or burgers. I had the Italia beef sandwich with fries. The sandwich was HUGE, you won't be leave hungry, I got my plan with no peppers and the bread sauced. Overalll pretty good bread was soft and meat was decent. The fries were really good and the cheese sauce complimented. The cake shake I got for desert was different in a good way. A little behind but in celebration of the new pope i decided to go to this fine Chicago establishment we have here and get the limited time " The Leo" a Italian beef sandwich baptized in the holiest of holy beef au ju and it is a messy juicy sandwich so be sure to grab a few napkins, and after eating this majestic piece of work I truly feel blessed. I also can't come to portillos without getting a famous Chicago dog that nails everything needed in a hotdog. The atmosphere isn't the same as the Chicago location which I'm not thrilled about I do wish I saw more Chicago but it is what it is. Extremely disappointed! I don't even know where to start but there was room for redemption yet there was none. Let me explain... My family and I were all excited to try Portillo's especially since we are big fans of beef dipped sandwiches. 2 of my orders were the #1, one with peppers and one without, cheese on both and the dipping gravy on the side since our order was to go. One of the meals was the cheeseburger meal and the other one was a chicken sandwich, which let me warn you before hand, there is an additional fee for cheese and peppers but hey when you are excited you don't mind. The staff was very friendly, seems like they were all in a great mood which is great especially when they are very busy, we did have to wait awhile for our order but that was expected. After my entertaining mighty fine number was called, we asked if our bags were double checked and the employee guaranteed us that she checked it. We drove home enthusiastically only to find out that our gravy on the sides were missing, and our sandwich with peppers which I paid for were missing as well. I was upset and decided to just share mine with the stale fries. The next day I called to complain about the food in hopes that they can replace what we were missing (2 gravies and the sandwich with peppers). The manager did ask for my information and said that she will email me some coupons to make up for the unfortunate experience which I was totally on board with that. It has been 3 weeks and STILL have not received any coupons or a call after I provided all my information. My thing, don't promise and not deliver! Never ventured out in Chicago, but this place makes you feel very Chicagoan. This place is very trending now here in Texas. My favorite, the Italian beef sandwich with no peppers, and the dipping sauce on the side, and the Rodeo burger. Another foodie paradise place. This is my 2nd time to try Portillo's since I first tried thier Tomball location. I got the Chicago dog so I could see if is consistent between locations and it was still good. I also tried the chilli dog and that was not good at all! The chilli was a sauce which is almost a water consistency and it had beans in it which definitely should not be in a chili sauce I would not get the chili dog especially if you're a Texan... you won't be happy with it. The crazy thing is they charge $3.89 for the Chicago and $5.19 for that nasty chili dog? No value for what you get!! So after this 2nd try I can say the Chicago style is good but the chili dog doesn't even equal what you can get at Sonic and James Coney. I stood there an additional 29 min then was handed a tray, with two brown bags and I had to ask for my drinks so cups handed add a lil eyeroll. This location just opened, and I am 'here for it'. For those that might not be familiar, it is on FM 1960 right at Willowbrook Mall. It took the place of the Fuddrucker's which burned down a few years ago. This is a worth replacement! (Oh yeah, it is pronounced POR-TILL-OHs .. Hard Ls) We had the two dogs meal (#2). It comes with two Portillo's, Chicago-style hotdogs, fries, and a fountain drink. You can upgrade the fries to large, but honestly the regular size fries and drinks was fine for the two of us. We also added an extra, plant-based hotdog just 'to see'. The hotdogs are interesting. They are made the 'Chicago way' which is dressed with a vibrant green sweet pickle relish, onions, mustard, sliced tomatoes, tiny banana-style peppers, and a pickle wedge. They are small, but filling, and all the flavors mesh incredibly well. The dogs also come on a sweet bun that is fresh, soft, and delicious. The beef dogs are lush, with a good bite, savory, but not overly-salty taste. Really fresh and high-quality dogs. That said, I think the plant-based dogs are even better, and have a delicious smokey flavor, and good chew. You won't go wrong with either. The fries are good, hot, and salty, and they have a wide array of soft drinks. I will be back to explore more of the menu, as they were having a soft-opening and still working out some kinks in service and the menu--honestly, the service was better than I expected, and once you take your seat you watch the leaderboard and your ticket to be called.
