    House Salad - Half Salad

I had a dentist appointment across the hall and always smell the bread from this place. Today after my appointment I decided to stop on and grab something to have for lunch later. The staff was friendly, interior had a cool vibe with the decor and music, and the food was delicious! The greens in my salad were so fresh. I got a balsamic dressing to go with it. A grilled cheese because I was feeling a no frills sandwich today, but I'll definitely return to try another item on the menu! I grabbed my food to go because I had another appointment to run to, but I'd love to come back and hang out in the upstairs area when I have more time. Definitely recommend!

Such a cute cozy coffee shop in Lawrence, right in the heart of the former Fort Benjamin Harrison military base. The coffee shop is located in a building with other businesses and the only sign I could see was on the door that sits further from the road. You probably won't find this place unless you are seeking it out. This is a 2 story coffee shop with entrances on both floors. Ordering takes place on the first floor. There are several cozy places to lounge and hang out. Also several books you can choose from to read. I did find some areas to be cluttered with random things. I ordered a plain coffee and it was delicious. They're also breakfast and lunch items as well as pastries and other coffee drinks to choose from. I would definitely come back.

When you order, keep on mind their name: Books and BREAD. Get something that features the amazing, delicious bread! I went for the Basic Becky (avocado toast) and was not disappointed. A generous slice of tasty, soft bread with avocado, sesame seeds, and micro greens. I would have loved a little flaky salt on top. I went with a latte, and asked to have a honey flavor one. It was fantastic. The service was wonderful; they're so polite and friendly. I had never been in the area and they filled me in on the history. Indoor, outdoor, lots of options. Grab any of the various seats and settle in, they'll bring your order to you!

Porter Books & Bread continues to be my Indy favorite coffee shop + WFCH (work from coffee house) spot and the customer service has remained consistent throughout! This is especially true being a locally owned business without any major changes for the last year or two! They are known for their freshly baked breads and house made salads and dressings which are always to die for! With summer here, it's a great point to stop at before or after hikes at Fort Harrison state park. A gem, they need a 2nd branch!!!

Wow what a find! Live less than 2 miles away and just stumbled in to this yummy place! The portions are massive and the food is divine! We got the Sun also rises, Basic Becky with an egg and Lemon Blueberry scone. Everyone was full and happy!

Located on Lawton Loop. It can be tricky to find but once you get to the back of the place, there is a huge parking lot. You can see the sign from the lot but you really have to look for it. My friends love this place for their sandwiches and macaroons. Molasses cookies and coconut macaroons shown. I've never had their coffee or sandwiches but my friend had an oat milk mocha with this order of sweets and said it was very good.

I really enjoyed this place! Service was good, and the coffee and food were even better. I got the shakerato - shaken espresso with condensed milk. So yummy!! Very good and fresh food too.

Porter is an interesting shop! The two levels make for a unique set up. You order on the lower floor, which has an outer entrance as well as a spiral staircase that leads to the upper level. There was a table downstairs, but most of the seating is on the upper level. That bathroom is a the hallway off the lower level, so you'd have to leave the shop to go there. But it's close enough that it's not inconvenient as long as you know where it is. I had a cup of green tea with a splash of oat milk (the only dairy free milk offered). It was really good! And the price point was, too. (Just under $2.50 for a medium/grande size.) I'd gladly go back to Porter! With the bookish vibes and natural light upstairs, it would be a great spot to write.

Porter Books & Bread is a hidden gem! Everything was fresh and local. Delicious and different sandwich options served with broad ripple chips! Beer, wine, coffee, and kombucha options to drink. Funky interior and with a spiral staircase brings the vibes!

I have lived in Lawrence, walking distance from Porter since before they opened, yet somehow I did not discover them until browsing Yelp for local coffee houses last week. I have been missing out! Located in the old fort, surrounded by green space, I almost felts like I was back home in England. There were even some people outside on the lawn flying kites! My husband and I both ordered sandwiches, we didn't have coffee as we had been running around town all day and its HOT, so we had ice water and my hubs had a humble bumble hard seltzer. Nice to have the option of an alcoholic beverage with lunch on a hot spring weekend! I had the Vonnegut and my hubs had the Austin, they were out of focaccia so we both had our sandwiches on their herb bread. These sandwiches were overflowing with fillings, and the deli meats were substantial - it had the hand carved feel, I'm not sure if they cook and carve their own meats but it felt that way. The chips also tasted homemade, everything was delicious! The ambiance was fun and upbeat with energetic music playing. All of the staff were friendly and seemed happy to be there, some of them were singing along to the music! I am very sad I only just visited Porter, but I know we will become regulars now we've been!

I stopped in here on my way to Lawrence this morning. Google Maps led me right to the door. The shop is part of a larger building. From the exterior I walked up the steps but really should have walked down the steps. The bottom floor is where you order. There is seating on the bottom floor and the top floor. It is a cute little place and yes there are books to read! I ordered a Chai tea and a grilled bagel sandwich called The Sun Also Rises. Pickles on an egg sandwich? Guess what? It works. I had to wait about 20 minutes to get my sandwich and tea but the sandwich was excellently grilled and was very tasty. That chai tea was not to my liking but everybody seems to make chai tea a little differently and this one seem to have a little bit too much of one spice that really hit a too spicy level in the back of my throat. I will definitely make my way back around at this place.

This spot loses one star just from me since it is NOT friendly for someone with arthritis or who might be unstable on stairs. Otherwise it would be a solid 5 stars. The staff is very friendly and extremely helpful. For instance, they stopped by my table 3 times during my leisurely lunch to see if I needed anything. Not obtrusive. I got a half ham, turkey and cheese sandwich on focaccia (i forget the name) and a house salad. The sandwich was out of this worldand the salad was good as well although with ro much cheese for me. Good cheese though and they chopped the salad greens a bit instead of putting them in the bowl in whole pieces. Much appreciated! Ooooooh, and the cappuccino came in a china cup, the espresso was perfect and the oat milk was beautifully foamed. Kudos. (darned stairs.)

Does anyone know if there's a plan to make this place wheelchair accessible? I know that some of the buildings in the Fort Ben area have added ramping. I'd love to visit this place, but it's not quite worth crawling!

Thanks for asking! I'm happy to report that ramps are indeed in our future. The building has taken a little while to renovate, and exterior improvements are currently underway. With that will be wheelchair ramps and perhaps other modes of…

This was certainly a wonderful place to stumble upon which had alot of gems inside. The vintage type writers were a really cool touch as well. Everything about this place was inviting and warm. I purchased a book that's been on my to-read list for some time (Nightbitch) and a new book that I've never heard of before, but was very intrigued by (Strange Pictures). Knocking 1 star off because there is a very bad odor, like something is wrong with the plumbing, inside the whole shop and it cut my visit way shorter than I had planned because I couldn't stand breathing it in any longer.

Their collection blends books and zines you haven't heard of yet with popular titles you often see and ones in between. They have a good range for different ages, too, with a nice young adult section, children's books, and middle grade as well as the plentiful shelves for adults. There's a local author shelf and there's a fun mix of local talent there in a variety of genres and age categories--plus sometimes, signed copies. They do carry some gift items like candles, and their custom stickers and apparel make me smile. The little book guys are fun! Tomorrow is well worth a stop if you're downtown. They had a really nice collection of books across all genres, though I never bought any so I don't know how pricing was. The main seating area was also nice, with some bar seating, some smaller tables, and a larger meeting table. I think the pricing was reasonable. My only hiccup was not realizing they had a decent sized tea menu, because they didn't have tea listed on their wall menu, instead leaving it to a laminate on the counter which I didn't see until I already placed my order. I got a chai latte that was pretty good but I found it to be rather sweet. I can't say I'd come back again, mostly because I can't come back again. I got the seasonal latte, which was some type of spiced latte, but only came hot and with oat milk. When I get oat milk lattes from other places (ahem, Starbucks), the oat flavor of the milk is so heavy and overwhelming that I can't taste the flavor of the latte. Not here!! I could barely taste the difference from dairy milk- it was steamed perfectly, had cute latte art, and tasted so good. I did have to ask what the seasonal latte was, but the barista was very helpful and knowledgeable. I also got the cardamom and pepper scone, which was SO GOOD! I can be pretty skeptical of scones since a lot of places in the US serve them crumbly and hard, or way too sweet. This was the PERFECT scone. It was slightly savory, soo soft, and perfectly baked. I will be back for this scone alone if not anything else. They also have breakfast sandwiches and breakfast burritos, which I was happy to see, but did not try this time. They have a small selections of books, but admittedly I was just there to work and didn't peruse that section this time. There was street parking right out front that was easy to snag a spot in, and pretty cheap for the amount of time I was there.
