Good and coffee is great , service not so much unfortunately. The speaker is broken and I practically chastised for not yelling at the speaker. The gutter over the window is packed with leaves and trees making water pour into my window when raining, which is rather annoying. This place has gone down hill over the past year. I went today to order an unsweetened apricot tea with two Splenda and a chocolate shake for my little one. I got handed a chocolate milk out the window. I told the lady that I ordered a chocolate shake and she got angry then she came back and told me that the next time the order would be $1.25 more. I handed her the money as I like to pay for what I ordered and she was rude about taking the money, so I told her to put it in the tip jar. She admitted to being the owner and said that it was her mistake but she didn't have to be rude when I was willing to pay the difference. I live close to this Port City Java so it's the most convenient one for me to go to. The service is nonexistent and the woman who I assume owns it always seems like she hates her life. I likely will continue to go here because of the convenience of location but unless you have 30 minutes of time to commit to being there(this is not an exaggeration), you will be late to whatever you were on the way to. I have never in the 50+ times I've been to this location had a frustration free experience. I was in the drive-through for eight minutes without moving forward so I went inside and stood at the counter for an additional five minutes but ended up leaving because out of the three people who were working, not a single person acknowledged that they would be right there or that I was even standing there to order. I foresee this place going out of business in the next year or so, which is sad but it is so inefficient and unfriendly that I just don't see how it could last read more

Always a good experience except for the Hampstead location. Not sure what it is, but in the 7 years I've lived in the Wilmington area I've been to every location but Hampstead is the only one where staff have either been rude (like cut you off when you ask a simple question) or have made my order incorrectly when other sites never have. I don't order 'special requests' or have an attitude when I interact with anyone in the service industry, yet this location has always made me feel like they could care less about interacting with customers or being even remotely decent. The single star is for the nice little seating areas inside and the porch with fans. Other than that this was the worst coffee shop experience I have ever had. First off I walk in to no greeting, just I blank stare, but whatever. Then I order my hot latte and a cranberry muffin. This is something I have ordered at the other locations and is always good. Somehow though, my coffee comes out warm but not hot, like it had been sitting for 30 or so minutes, and my muffin is refrigerator cold and hard. I always frequent Port City Java near my home, love the coffee and service. Unfortunately at this location in the last two weeks I have ordered three times. The wait was extremely long (not because of other patrons in line) in all instances even at 10am. This morning after ordering my hot latte, I waited over five minutes in line, pull up to window and they want to hand me a cold coffee drink! Second wrong drink in three tries. I believe it was the owner who proceeds to argue with me that I ordered this drink, so I left and will go now back to the location that appreciates my business over the last seven years three to five times a week! As with every other PCJ I've been in, the service is always exemplary and the coffee is extraordinary. Great coffee chain in the Wilmington area. I used to live in Eastern NC and loved when I was in range of a Port City Java location, it's a much needed break from Starbucks. I always get the Red Eye with an extra espresso shot and a pump of vanilla. It's a pretty strong drink, but that's the way I like it. Just relocotating to the area, we decided to try Port City Java as opposed to driving the additional 20 minutes to that big chain coffee establishment. We are so glad we did! I would say I get exactly what I want about 50% of the time. Maybe less. The staff are lackadaisical and dismissive. I had to turn around because my coffee was cold and they replaced it with hot, but there's no apology and she acted like I was putting her out. Nice and polite staff. Pet friendly. Will give treats at the drive through if they see your pet. Not sure if they allow them inside but have brought a dog and sat outside before. Port City Java is actually a chain with the Wilmington to Leland area so its surprising to see one right in hampstead. The service is hit or miss but you have un motivated teenagers working what can you do? as long as the coffee is good and I dont get espresso that I dont have to send back its all good. Ive never had a problem with their lattes or specialty drinks. Their coffee is made every 4 hours and its not watered down ! I love this place for the Mocha shakes and Java shakes. They use all icecream and no ice in the shakes so I really suggest you try it once; they use monin syrup for most of the flavoring so its really yummy. If your drink tastes bitter take it back ; espresso goes bad once it hits the air after 10 seconds. If you get any of their good baristas you wont have a problem but its happened to me here once before thats why its a 3 star review. Overall I like it here and reminds of home where we have more local coffee shops than starbucks. read more
