It was underwhelming. But the lamb shank was great!! And we choose the "potato of the day" which was a cheesy, garlicy mess of deliciousness on the plate! We also both liked our beer and wine selections too.

Very well made, the meat patty was very juicy and tender. Good seasoning. The chips are ok, not too spectacular. Technology- unlimited wireless internet for a dollar. I had plenty of time but ordered one of the "fast dishes" and a cup of tea. In my instance, it was a bowl of seafood chowder and a slice of garlic bread. Quite tasty, warm and fresh, perfect to tide me over until dinner time. Other items on the menu include sandwiches, freshly prepared coffees and pastries, specials and soups of the day and more. It was a great suggestion to eat here and the prices are reasonable too. And the ambiance, while no frills, offers plenty of space to enjoy your food. First we realized the restaurant closes at 9PM on most days... and thought that was early until a quick Yelp search shows that most places don't even open past 6PM in Hokitika. Given the lack of options, I'm not surprised that this is a default eatery for most. We had to pick whitebait because that seems to be what all the other reviews point toward. It wasn't disappointing. Having the tiny eyes from the white fish staring at you isn't exactly appetizing. Ultimately, it just wasn't flavorful. The lemon helps. The capers help. It's a white pizza. We kind of wish we got a red sauce pizza instead. I would've given it a 3 star but who wants to go to a 3 star restaurant? What am I saying, you don't have a choice. Nothing else is open. Just come and enjoy it and don't think too hard about it!

I was traveling around the entire south island with some friends and Hokitika was our first stop. When you come to Hokitika this place is on everyone's go to list. They put meat on our veggie pizza so we had to send it back and have it remade. Some of you might think seafood pizza sounds weird but it's actually really good! Mariner is a must try if you go! There's a really nice sunset spot in Hokitika right behind this restaurant so you can stop there first and eat pizza after. Or eat it with the sunset. But I was there in the winter and it was a bit too cold for that. 4 stars. Staff is a little edgy, the pizza was good not great. Try if you're around but don't go out of your way for it.

When we…read morearrived, we saw that they had painted on the front window that they had been a finalist for top cafe in New Zealand three times 3 times in the past 8 years or so. However, from what I saw, this was completely unwarranted. This cafe was average in every way. I can't think of a single thing they excelled at, though at the same time I can't think of anything that was clearly subpar. I tend to give 3 stars in this situation, but I just can't do it here because of the feeling I got eating here. Think of your oldest living relative, someone who doesn't go out much and who never travels far. This is the kind of place they would like. People's tastes have changed over the decades, but this restaurant hasn't changed with them. They had a menu posted outside, and at least two inside, and all were different, so examine them all carefully before placing your order. I ended up with the fish sandwich because I didn't see you could get a half portion of the fish and chips because I assumed all menus would be the same. My wife ordered lasagna. After ordering we had to go up and request water separately, which was unusual. My sandwich came, it was fish on store-bought bread with lettuce, tomato and mayo/tartar sauce; it also came with fries. Mine was very bland and just not that good. It was also messier than you'd expect. My wife didn't enjoy her lasagna either; it looked like a hot mess; she picked away at it, scraped off a bunch of cheese (she said it had no meat or tomato sauce, something I thought all lasagna had), picked at her salad a bit then just gave up on her meal altogether. Simply, this place just isn't that good, let alone great. You'd be better off picking another restaurant at random, or as my wife said after leaving, at one of the fast food places in town. Maybe they were good once, but they sure have fallen.

I can only assume that this place has gone downhill since receiving the awards. We walked in, waited in a short line. The cashier refused to say any pleasantries (including "Hello") and would only look at us. It was uncomfortable to say the least. It was especially noticeable when I saw her conversing with many other patrons during our visit. I ordered the lasagna and salad ($17). Honestly, it tasted exactly like Stouffer's lasagna. There was way too much cheese and hardly any meat in the lasagna. There was so much cheese that I scraped off a large amount, leaving about 1/2 cup on my plate. It was greasy and gross. There was no real flavor in the food. Also strange is how they give you a table number and then proceed to go ask everyone in the dining room if this is the food that you ordered. There seems to be no correlation between the table number and the food that goes out. I also observed with several tables how the customer ordered a hot drink (such as a flat white) and never got it until way after the food was delivered and only after they inquired about the drink a second or third time. I saw a sign posted in the dining room reading "unattended children will be taken as slaves." While I have seen many signs regarding unattended children I have never seen one including slave language. I found the sign to be unnecessary (and alarming), as I was the youngest patron in the dining room by several decades. In all, I would stay away.

We settled on Zaika, a Moroccan restaurant. We dropped in on a Saturday evening (around 7:30pm) to a packed house. The inside has a strange layout; they don't make full use of their space very well. Service is friendly enough but they were running around and seemed to forget about us. Pay at the counter when you're done. The menu is split into starters, Zaika bowls, Zaika wraps, pita pocket, Zaika salad, kid's meals and a royal platter. The platter ($49.90 NZD) sounded tasty and a good way to share. - Wedges ($5.00 NZD) - this was actually a good portion size. Decent seasoning and most of the wedges were crispy. The sauce/aioli was neutral but tasteless. - Grilled fish Zaika bowl ($17.50 NZD) - we decided to share a bowl and asked for half Arabic rice and half couscous. For the salads, we picked corn salsa, grilled vege and carrots & beet. Sauce was hummus but it was different than what we expected. They mixed it in with the rest of the ingredients. We also got our bowl medium spicy but it was only in the tiniest manner. Fish was perfectly grilled but it was soooooo salty. Sad because it ruined the flavours. Everything else was tasty and nutritious. Try the lamb instead (our second choice).
