I have been recommending Porkys to many of my friends and they have love this place. The ribs are no average ribs, as they are so meaty. I suggest if you want to have a better chance to finish the ribs then come with an empty stomach. Its definitely a man vs ribs! If you are not a ribs fan then the pulled pork served with a toasted bun is a good alternative. Both the ribs and the pulled pork is accompanied with house pickles, which helps open your appetite. But I actually think it will help to finish the meal. You can actually have the mains on their own. But it usually does not seem complete without sides. We shared a selection of sides and my favourite are the sweet potatoes fries. They are good alternative to the seasoned fries and some thing different. Another one of my favourite is the BBQ wings which is a warm up dish. I love the succulent chicken in the tasty BBQ sauce. I actually don't think a starter is needed before a main but if you do then share! Sharing food is the best way to dine! read more

I hate doing this. I've been weighing up re-reviewing for a while, after giving an enthusiastic 5 star review a while ago. That was on the basis of several visits, so it didn't seem fair to change my opinion on a one off experience. However, I've now probably been back as many times as I had been before (5? 8? something like that) and I think it's just less special than it was. There are three main things detracting from it. Firstly, the prices have gone up quite a lot, so the standard ribs plate is £14 - it used to be £10, I think, which I appreciate is cheap, but then that was one of my considerations when giving them a good review. In addition to this, the portions have got smaller - way smaller. My boyfriend and I used to share a plate, but that is not realistic anymore. We used to get three or four large ribs - yesterday we only got two, which is representative of the last few visits. We also used to get three or four burnt ends, but they appear to be not served anymore. And finally, it's not consistently good. I'd even say that most of the times we've been in the last year, the food has been bad - way drier meat than it should be - though yesterday I thought the ribs were great again. I wouldn't say not to go, and I'll almost certainly be back, but I'm just not as charmed by it anymore. read more

An American-like feel with country music and all. The decor has various pictures of American music artists. The menu is typical of such BBQ establishments. Pulled pork, baby back ribs....etc etc. smells authentic but I'm not sold. I got the Porky burger; pulled pork, bacon, cheese on a meat patty cooked to your liking. It was actually really good - better than I expected. They didn't come with fries but I added it to my meal. Good stop if you need something quick and tasty. Good for groups but perhaps not for a date. It's not overly loud and thankfully there are no TVs. All and all a good find. read more

Pros: Good BBQ for the price. Authenitic American cuisine (I am a yank, I know good bbq). Fall off the bone ribs and good beer always makes me feel like home. Cons: Not truely "Memphis" so to speak. I guess Im just used to the dry rub, so wet ribs feel a bit inauthentic to me when I think of Memphis. Also the manager would not let me switch sides from slaw and pickles to fries and let me pay to upgrade to a premium side in addition to fries. Sides were "just the way the meal came". We were in the market area and found this spot close by- the service was great, our waiter was really polite and helped us understand what certain things were on the menu. I really enjoyed the food it was fresh and delicious. I would def come back again and eat here. We ordered burgers and fries and juicd. The milkshakes were amazing as well. Unfortunately Alice's experience may not have been terribly atypical, there was quite a few other people in the garden where we were that seemed to be waiting for ages as well (as did we) to order, one woman didn't get her food at all. I'm not sure if this is going to come down to some growing pains or huccups of a new business, because I think everything taste-wise was decent, just the service was a bit hit and miss. I don't want to fault the servers without knowing the whole story, so maybe it's a kitchen communication issue, but I think they have a little room for improvement. We went with some BBQ pulled pork, the porky's burger and some sides, I'd go back but maybe not if you're on a time-crunch unless someone updates that things might be moving along a bit smoother. read more

I was staying in Camden for a month and popped in here on a drizzly night. American themed BBQ joint in UK? Hmmmmm.....I raised an eyebrow! The food was solid. Much better quality meat than I am used to being served. I tried the ribs, burgers, creamed spinach, mac and cheese and fries. Everything was tasty. Free wifi if you are bored waiting for your food....which you will be since the service Is slooooooow. Yes indeed. the service was lacking but that was about it. I promise any locals in London....this is as good as it gets BBQ-wise. It was much better than some of the BBQ we have here in the states. They did their homework and what they are making is authentic. If anybody had a bad food experience you must've been here on a weird night. I dined here about 4 times in a month. Huge meaty ribs and tips will leave you full to the brim! Not only that, you'll find some great American beers on tap here, along with... wait for it... a delicious ROOT BEER! Made with real honey, it was the best root beer I've had in the UK. Ok, that sounds ridiculous, you can't get root beer in the UK, but still, it was delicious. Went here for a very late breakfast ...does breakfast at 4pm qualify as breakfast? Anyway, I decided to order a burger and wasn't disappointed. It's not the best burger in London but it does the job. The patty was tender and seasoned well but not medium rare with only a slight hint of pink. Would have been amazing if it was medium rare was ordered. The bun is brioche - buttery and soft. Me like!! Overall, a pretty solid burger. I ordered the BBQ pulled pork beans as a side was wasn't entirely impressed - lacked the BBQ kick and there wasn't enough pork. I know it's a side dish but gimme mo' meat!! My mate had chips so I stole some of that. Staff were friendly and attentive - service was quick. I think last time I came was early 6pm and it was just amazing.., this time they were okay but nothing that special... What a shame... A mate suggested this place for a catchup and having not been here (but a fan of ribs) I had no better suggestions!! the place is very tidy, with the right amount of seating for the size of the place. We opted for seats at he back in the small additional annex. We were served by a keen American waitress who was happy to make recommendations. I went for the mug of chilli to start and a cask ale. The chilli arrived in ample time and was really tasty, not used to having this meal without rice or as a started but I would reccomend it! For Main I wnet for the ribs!! with a coleslaw side, i was warned this wasnt a tradtional slaw made with mayo but a still very tasty... and it was. The ribs & tips were really good! the meat was tender and fell off the bone as i ate it and the portion was generous... if not a little too much. The essence of all BBQ is slow cooking of meat that would otherwise be nearly inedible ... Porkys seem to have decided that despite centuries of evidence that they will try to buck this trend ... Based on fairly extensive sampling of the resulting food I can with total confidence say fast cooking of ribs produces still produces nearly inedible food. The menu focuses around three main dishes, all smoked over hickory and served with house pickles. The Memphis Meaty Ribs & Tips (£9.50) served with Porky's homemade BBQ sauce, their Pulled Pork (£8.75) that's been cooked low and slow for a generous 18 hours in smokers imported from Oklahoma and Half BBQ Chicken for £8.50. For an authentic touch they also offer Catfish, spiced and fried for £9.80. That has to be worth a try. Antonia and I met at Porky's before a We Were Evergreen gig at the Camden Barfly. We were on a detox of meat and green veg, no carbs, no dairy, no eggs, no alcohol, no gluten, no sugar... no fun. Somehow we justified Porky's as qualifying as part of that detox. We both ordered the Memphis Meaty Ribs & Tips £9.50 each as well as a couple of soft drinks - Ginger Beer (£2.35) for Antonia and a Root Beer (£3.20) for me. We also asked for a House Salad of mixed leaves, tomatoes, cucumber, onion & avocado with mustard vinaigrette as a main to share for £8. The decor in pretty authentic USA with a nice bar to one side, plenty of cool posters of musical legends covering the walls and plenty of great classic tracks playing in the background. Considering the ribs were only £9.50 I was expecting a small portion. I don't think I've ever stood so corrected! In keeping with the authentic american theme in here our massive ribs arrived in a blue rimmed white metal tray, with some pickles in one corner and ribs and tips taking up the rest of the space. Tonight there was a problem with my order and the manager dealt with it immediately, within the space of ten minutes it was sorted! (Good job!) Porkys Camden - recently reopened where foggs used to be. Waited 15 minutes for the staff to ignore us, they were too busy clearing plates off one or two empty tables to serve us in a half empty restaurant. When we were served the waitress was pretty rude. We were starving and ordered burgers. Very dry and overdone and fell apart, the sides of chips were small soggy and cold - at £4 for a side- not impressive. I didn't manage to get halfway through the burger despite my hunger. We really wanted to like it, as a local great hangout would be great, but the food at porkys really disappointed us, and we wouldn't go back, especially given the service. read more

Porky's is the latest southern American BBQ joint to arrive in Camden. It looks like a little hole-in-the-wall from the front, but step inside and you'll be transported back to the deep south. The kitchen creates Memphis-style cooking that's true to its roots: portions are massive, prices reasonable and flavoursare full-on. The vibe is low-key, the ambiance is chill and the service is super friendly. Their pulled pork and BBQ ribs are our of this world - sweet, succulent and melt-in-your-mouth. The hush puppy starters are pretty bangin' as well! They've got a range of nice craft beers on their drinks menu, including American favorites like Anchor Steam and Goose Island, to lesser known brew, such as Fordham Helles and Old Dominion. I don't lie when I say that the portions are MASSIVE! Go hungry, but you'll probably still come out with a doggie bag in tow. read more

Every time we walked past Porky's it looked busy- so we decided to try it. Food & service were great! It's American style BBQ done well in London. It looks small from the outside but the restaurant extends further back. The walls are adorned with pictures of Johnny Cash & Elvis Presley. The drinks menu features a variety of southern bourbon and whiskey drinks. I'm a veggie and loved the memphis bean burger. My husband ordered the porky burger which he really enjoyed. We shared 3 sides which were all very good- the coleslaw, sweet potato fries, and bbq beans. I appreciated that the bbq beans were veggie and had no pork in them as American style bbq beans often do. All the food was very flavorsome. The cocktails are additionally interesting- I ordered the plum jam julep which was served in a jam jar with a chocolate bourbon biscuit on top sprinkled with powdered sugar. Love the attention put into their cocktails & food. We will definitely be back. Food is reasonably priced as well. Update: Don't try the burger sauce unless you really like mustard it is way too strong!! Ask for no burger sauce as it comes automatically or on the side if you are not sure. read more

Its interesting eating American BBQ outside of the US. In fact you don't see a lot of American BBQ places in other countries, or maybe I'm not looking hard enough. In any case, I thought this place was pretty good. I had the memphis meaty ribs and tips and a couple of coors lights. Overall the presentation and the taste of the food was good, the price was decent and the bbq sauce was just right. The decor of the place was contemporary, which I liked. Born in Texas and spent my college years in Virginia, so I spent my life sampling and pursuing great BBQ - both Texas beef and Carolina pork - and I can't believe that I had to travel to London to find some of the best pork BBQ I've ever tasted. My girlfriend and I were wandering around Camden after a late night comedy show hoping that we'd find something still open when we spied the Porky's awning. I had to go in, not expecting any great BBQ, but just to have a story about how I tried to get BBQ on a trip to London. I didn't expect to discover a pulled pork BBQ that was slow cooked to perfection - crispy on the outside, tender and flavorful on the inside, with a selection of two delicious and authentic Carolina vinegar-based sauces. I wasn't a huge fan of the slaw - too creamy to complement the smoky pork - but the quality of the BBQ made up for the disappointing slaw. The serving size was generous and all in all this turned out to be the best meal we ate all week. In contrast to one of the previous reviewers, I had the best restaurant service of my entire stay in London. In fact we met the restaurant's owners Simon and Joy when I complimented them on the attentiveness and friendliness of our server (a young lady from Pittsburgh who was thoroughly delightful). We ended up chatting with the charming owners to discover how they brought authentic Carolina BBQ to Camden. Ask them while you're enjoying your pulled pork - it's a great story. read more

I'd heard great things about Porky's so we stopped by here for dinner around 7pm before an event at the Roundhouse (it's a stones throw up the street). It seems to be modeled on Bodean's, just without the good execution. The decor is all bare brick, cool NYC sort of BBQ joint vibe and they sell a great selection of craft beers - but you'd have to know what you're asking for as the staff aren't that well versed on the different types and couldn't make a recommendation. The food itself came out fairly quickly, which is always a bonus, unfortunately it was just way too dry to eat the whole thing. I ordered the Pulled Pork and honestly, it could have done with a lot more sauce than the tiny pot I was given to bring it back to life. I've been to Porky's twice now and hoping that the second time would be better than the first, but alas, the service/attitude from one particular 'could-give-less-of-a-s"@&' waitress continues to pervade. The other two waiting staff are lovely (one is a new waitress from Brisbane and hopefully doesn't learn from this bad member of staff) they are always smiling and strikes a lovely conversation and makes the visit worth it, but even they can't make up for this other staff member who I know can smile when she talks to her colleagues, but once she turns to the customers her smile drops and its "sullen face" again. Barely any eye contact when taking the order, no eye contact when she puts water on your table. She puts the food on your table and she's off again to God knows where when there are no other customers. A half-hearted attempt at 'how was you food' but continues to walk pass without hearing the customer response. And when you finish and pay and leave, 'sullen face' just looks at you without a word. What a nice way to spend £50-60. Which is a shame as the wings (spicy), ribs (juicy), onion rings (crispy) are all great (good job chef)! But dear readers, there are better ways to spend your money in Camden than seeing 'sullen face'. read more

Saw a recommendation of this place so went for a lazy Sunday lunch. It was overrated and won't go back. We had the pulled pork, the burger, corn fritters and drinks. Not impressed. The pulled pork was dry and stringy - not what pulled pork is about. And the meat patty in the burger was overcooked and dry. The corn fritters had more batter than actual corn or anything else. Not very tasty. Tastier burgers available at Byron or Gourmet Burger Kitchen - for cheaper too. Service was slow. We requested a table for 2 - there were heaps of 4 seater tables free with no other people waiting, yet they made us wait 15 minutes for a 2 seater to become available. And during our entire meal, the 4 seater tables remained empty. Go figure. Then when we asked for the bill 3 times, it finally came out after 20 minutes. read more

Thought I'd never say this about a UK restaurant but the portions are TOO LARGE. I had the ribs and pulled pork selection and I defy anyone to finish. The ribs are meaty but bland while the pulled pork tasted like soya in a sweet sauce. The BBQ sauces are insipid, the beers are good and the staff are pleasant but I shan't return. Poor showing at porky's. Great atmosphere and service, but food was an epic disappointment for this American. Yes, as a yank I may be pickier about my BBQ than other Londoners, but as this city's current culinary market is infatuated with American-style BBQ options, I'd expect a little more effort from the kitchen. My side house salad was probably the best thing we ate - which is sad considering that a salad of that sort, though delicious, would be found a within a mile of proper Memphis BBQ back home. The meat (we had ribs and tips) was ok. The slathered sauce was tasty, but I have no idea what they are using to smoke the meat for 18 hours considering that it came out chewy and very fatty. 18 hours of smoking should result in fall-off-the bone goodness, not a wrestling match between my teeth and and a piece of pig. The mac and cheese was pretty good (hard to go wrong with hot cheese), but the seasoned fried we're soggy and tasteless. I literally had three and stopped eating them. The most epic blunders, however, were the "BBQ baked beans" and the "hush puppies". The beans were horrendously undercooked, and other then a hint of BBQ sauce flavour, resembles an a sad attempt at it lain bean stew more than anything you'd experience State side. The hush puppies were a travesty. What should be unctuous, cake-like balls of sweet and savoury cornbread were instead balls of fried pasty masa mashed together with chunks of corn (maize). Whoever was responsible for the recipe deeply misunderstood the basic ingredients of what into a hush puppy, and has clearly never tasted one.
