You know sometimes you can be disappointed when you taste the authentic food from the country and then come back to your own, go to a restaurant claiming to serve traditional cuisine from the country you visited and they're nowhere close! I'm happy to say that Luigi's has beautiful and delicious Italian food! The staff are good humoured, courteous, service was good and they are authentic Italian too. We found that Luigi's have a lower priced lunch menu, we had three courses and a drink each and paid around £25 in total! I had minestrone soup, chicken with winter vegetables, and then tiramisu for dessert everything was delicious....especially the tiramisu! Elle had Buffalo mozzarella salad, venison with vegetables, and then tiramisu for dessert. Elle's salad was a little bland and unseasoned, then venison which was beautifully cooked and tender and for dessert tiramisu. Overall we thought the food was very good, and would recommend their lunch menu to anyone. However a word of caution! I am lactose intolerant and Elle is Gluten/Wheat intolerant and the tiramisu though delicious has both gluten and milk in it. Fortunately I have pills to eat dairy, however Elle faced the consequences later on! (although said the tiramisu was worth it!) The atmosphere was overall Italian; with Italian music playing in the background, various pickles, wine, paintings and other Italian décor. A warm and friendly glimpse of a little piece of Italy.

Weber Grill Academy - Intro course at the Jolly Gardeners

Mostly because I hadn't realised I'd been setting up a barbecue incorrectly and the direct/indirect heat was really useful. I'd just been throwing everything on a high direct heat as is the British tradition (that way you can get the highly traditional burnt exterior and raw interior to every piece of food). Mind you, I did get some serious barbecue jealousy. The Weber grills are just so nice, although I know I'm never going to throw a grand and a half at a gas barbecue. Really my kettle charcoal grill is good enough, but perhaps one day I'll get a Weber equivalent. The use of brickettes really has made to want to chuck out my three year old lumpwood charcoal though - they lit so much easier than I'm used to at home. Regarding the actual course itself, I went on the barbecue basics course. As we arrived there were sausages already on to give us an early snack. They showed us how to do the direct/indirect with those, and some very simple stuff such as warming up some baguettes on the grill as well. Then we saw how to do beer can chicken (which was great by the way), and then something really wild that I'd never ever considered before - baking buns for burgers... on the actual grill. They looked great but were a bit dense - that's all down to the mix, but the actual technique was solid. A couple of chickens were jointed and marinaded before being grilled, and some burgers were made up. Location was great - it was in the beer garden of the Jolly Gardeners in South London, and we were proper lucky for the weather. By the time the class was over, I was stuffed - and it's also the first time I've done a cooking course and wandering off to get a pint was a bit of a normal. Best Friday morning I've had in a long, long time! Was a wonderful gift from my wife.
