I was hoping that this place would be different from the reviews. I REALLY did. It sounded like one of those hidden gems that other Yelpers were just ignorant about. Well. They weren't. This is a high school dance party from the 80s. I saw more canvas shoes and painted-on jeans than I can stand for one night. I shed a tear over Yelpers' nasty remarks over Popscene. Surely whether you're wearing a wristband or you have to ask someone who is to get you a vodka tonic on the sly, you have to love the stars that have played this club. I'll never forget one night in July: at 1:30 A.M., M.I.A. stepped on stage and delivered an electric 20-minute set. It would have been thirty, but teenyboppers crushed the stage during Bucky Done Gun. (At least my buddy got to hi-five M.I.A. as she was rushing out with security.) Sure, the sound system sucks and most spots in the crowd have a direct view of a support column, but there's no way else can you tell your friends: "I saw Amy Winehouse two months before Letterman ogled her tits on the Late Show!" For the twenty-somethings who have turned against Popscene like Angelina getting over Billy Bob, I have four words for you: shut up and dance! You have to admit that the DJ's make you wiggle your body like a Chinese girl on E. And if you really can't stand the "we can stay out late tonight, I have my Mom's Subaru" crowd, remember this: at least you don't have to worry about some guy in dreadlocks and a Michael Vick jersey lurking outside the ladies room, licking his lips and calling you "Shawty". Finally, for you dudes that have to pay more for everything, here's a trick to get free water. Nicely ask a girl--even, god forbid, a teenybopper--to bat her lashes at the gruff bartender. After you stick it to Popscene like this, you'll laugh at how you ever could have sworn off this place. read more

For 18 and over and electronica and indy this place is pretty good. The guys can get a bit queer and the girls a bit snobby, but thats what you have to expect from a hipster club. Generally speaking its more of a place to go with friends. Some people are friendly but its pretty clicky. There is always tons of street parking you just have to make sure you check for the street sweeper if you park on 3rd street. The music is generally good. They will play lots of indy, electronica, 80s new wave, and then some hipster shit that shouldnt be played at a dance club. They play postal service... and death cab for cutie, and the smiths. The smiths maybe but the other two arent up beat enough to dance to they just play it because its a bunch of hispers who love it. read more

So the next few reviews will take you to what these 'gifts' are- and hopefully i'll be able to translate the experience as well :-) My friend luvs, no makes that LOVES this band- Monsters are Waiting... but when I heard they were playing at Popscene- my excitement dwindled a *little.* So I went about on yelp- to see what others have experienced- and well it seemed to be quite an enjoyable one- especially depending on what band was playing. We were waiting in line giggling like high school girls- hearing the perennially "OMG- that's soooo cute" or "Ummm mmmmkay " and "UHuh- that's sooooo..." phrases. What made this place memorable was the youngsters were all mixed- gays, lesbian, straight were all in this ONE place unfettered by my burst of enlightened thought... In High School- I didnt see this at all- growing up in the Bible belt , but im sure you know well what im talking about... But for one of my friends who suffered blatant remarks and teasings-how I wish she was with me right now-- Im sure we would have fun...oh if only time machines really existed...sigh... The Big Disco Ball suspended in mid air- and the kalediescope of flashing lights enlivened the gregarious crowd. The music fronted by the sultry voice of Annalee AND rhythmic harmony by guitarists Jonathan, Andrew and drummer Eric played and sounded like they were recording in a studio. So this birthday present is one I shall remember- for a little while longer...with that ha ha song still ringing in my head AND the unique insight to the future- that I shared a night the night looking at the better tomorrow. PS- I didn't have to be eighteen to belong- but feeling like one throughout the night gives it 5 stars...with bonus- nice stiff drinks!!! read more

I like coming here because I loooove to dance. Going to hip-hop clubs is fine, but if you want something different and appreciate other types of music, like me, you will like this place. I haven't been able to go to see any bands perform here but from what I've heard, its always fun. There are a lot of different people, varying in age, but its totally fine because everyone is pretty much just there to dance and have a great time! read more

Yes, a lot of the kids are young. Yes, some of them look ridiculous like they spent over 3 hours getting ready. Oh wow, ANOTHER person wearing stripes, pointy flats, tight jeans, '80s gear. Very original. But... they're playing the Faint--and Arcade Fire--and Belle & Sebastian! I got to see bands like Maximo Park and the Killers in a tiny space, close enough to feel the sweat off the lead singer! Go for the music. Go to just dance. and drink. And be glad that you're not 18, but that there are enough of them around and either unemployed or in school to keep Popscene alive. Face it: a LOT of clubs are full of cheesy people. At least here, the music is good, the overall vibe is chill, and it's not a meat-market (unless that what's you're looking for :) Also a great fussball table in the back (what can I say, I like fussball....) read more

I like this place- the people are friendly (for the most part) and a lot of them are pretty spontaneous. I went with a group of friends and one guy wanted us in his picture (I have no idea why but it was awesome anyways) and two guys wanted to be in my group pics with my friends. It was kinda weird but funny at the same time. They do have $2 coat check (I lied, it is not free) and they have jugs of water off to the side, which is awesome so that we underage kids don't have to wait for the bartender. The guys there are pretty awesome, as I said before. None of them tried to freak with me or my friends. They asked if they could dance with us and joined our circle and danced their funky dance moves. One of them spun me and my friend after saying he likes dancing and took ballroom dancing classes. The only downside I could say is that I saw something that should not have happened (err, weird blantant boobage and drugged girl making out with several guys much?) but, uh, aside from that, it was a pretty good and awesome experience. The place is small, but its a good space for the amount of people who actually go there. Cozy enough for the people, but not big or small enough to eject or single out people who want to dance. There are also a lot of couples who like to make out with their partners on the dance floor. But you can ignore those guys. :D The music is GREAT! People watching is also pretty cool- there are different styles of dancing and clothing~ and speaking of clothing: you can wear sneakers, jeans, and a t-shirt and still get in. Don't sweat it, if you're wearing clothes, you'll most likely be able to get in. (18+) read more

I used to go here pre-21 as a place to dance. Compared to the few other 18+ options we had, this place was awesome because: 1) not as many sketchy dudes. mostly people come here because of a specific band or guest DJ. 2) if you like indie music, you get to dance to it here! and not just stand around and nod your head like most people do at shows. Now that I'm, ahem, well past 21, I'd only go here for a specific band as opposed to a general night out. And to that end, the drinks are kind of overpriced and not great. I highly recommend this place if you're between 18 and 21 though. read more

Fun place, great find in SF while visiting with my boyfriend for the weekend. We got in for $7 (although the price was stated at $5 for the night, we assumed it was because we went rather late and they had been raising the prie). It reminded me of college parties, but not in a bad way. Although we didn't see any live bands, the DJs were pretty good and the vibe was relaxed. Some really bizarre (yet entertaining) music videos were being played on two large projector screens towards the dance floor. It seemed rather empty at first, but as more people came in, the space felt better. Didn't have any drinks that night - mostly came to just dance and have a simple good time, which I did. The place was clean and overall enjoyable. Wish we could have come in to see some bands - perhaps next SF visit. read more

The only reason I'm even giving this place two stars is because I saw Mew here for 13 bucks, and was close enough to snatch the set list from the stage. When I went to see the Teenagers, I almost got kicked out for being too drunk. Now, were I drunk at the time, I wouldn't blame them for being onto me and telling me to leave. However, I was only two cocktails into my night, and what they saw as "stumbling" was me tripping over the foot of someone in the smoking area. After they threatened me with a breathalyzer test and I calmly accepted, they seemed to change their minds and angrily let me back in. The whole episode wasn't that bad, but they are hypersensitive about underage drinking, so don't do it. And DO NOT try to use a Fake ID there, because they will probably kill you. They really take it personally, I've witnessed. Do not come here if you don't feel like trying too hard. It MIGHT be worth it if there's a good band. read more

Where was Popscene when I was in High School? Oh it didn't exist yet. Aaron Axelson and his team of funtastic DJ's really know how to throw a dance party. My first popscene was a dance party filled with 70s roller skating videos and Brit pop music. I was forever in love. Since then, I have seen countless number of shows, from Hard-Fi to Bloc Party to The Bravery to Yelle to La Roux... Need I say more? If you want to hear up and coming bands this is the place to go. Some shows have advance tickets so they can sell out fast. But they do offer the option to get limited tickets at when the doors open. Most of the patrons are 10+ years younger than me but I love observing their fashion. It's the one night I can get away with wearing 80s make up and still look cool! Continue to check the websites for shows. You never know who they are going to have. read more

After coming here once with a group of friends (and enjoying the performance of the opening act), I suggested the place to my other friend. We decided to go see The Hood Internet - but not before we imbibed a mixed drink of some random concoction, not realizing that in the time it took between drinking and getting to the venue, we developed a nice Asian glow to our cheeks. So nice, even, that it was obvious we had been drinking but only enough to get mildly buzzed. The bouncer didn't give us too much trouble. It was like having a parent lecture us on the finer points of responsibility. Not one for confrontation, we nodded and took it with ~grace and breezed right on through the doors. Maybe he was having a good day, I don't know. I hear stories of people unable to go inside for drinking beforehand (especially if you're a minor). Either way, I didn't really get the rude vibe from him. If they have to huff and puff to hold their authority steady over incoming patrons - well, it's kind of their job, isn't it? Service is fine. I feel like the criticism for their perceived apathy is unwarranted. They're trying to get drinks out in a timely manner and if you're nice to them, they're nice to you. Sure, other bars/clubs might have friendlier service - and kudos to them - but it really doesn't bother me too much so long as they give me the exact drink I ordered without firing the attitude pistol before I pay them; I tip accordingly, after all. (Yes, drinks are expensive, but you have a million liquor stores at your disposal for a quick pre-game should you choose to go that route.) The crowd isn't bothersome either. It's an eclectic mix, in my opinion, though I wouldn't be surprised if there's a majority of one group of people for a particular act. Just because it's 18+ isn't an issue. You get the same vibe here as you would any dance floor, and the 21+ crowd have proven they can be just as obnoxious and pretentious. People who pay too much attention to who's wearing wristbands and who's not might need to get their priorities straightened out. "Drunk people, indie heads, people old enough to be your mom or dad, mean service, rude bouncers, blah blah blah" - how you spend your time someplace is what you make of it. Unless you're forcibly removed from the premises, then you're kind of on your own. I'm not a club person by any means, and in no way would anyone classify me as a hipster, but this place hasn't disappointed me yet. -1 star because I'm just personally fussy about some things/it's more subjective. read more

Last year this was the place to be, especially for under 21 crowds. There werent older creepers the music was fun and the crowd was pumped. NOT ANY MORE I don't know about the shows, which are probably great, but the dance parties SUCk. This is an 18+ club. This means that I can't step back in without feeling like an ancient dinosaur at the age of 25.5. However, for a while, this was the one place where my hipster and non-hipster friends could agree upon to come, drink and dance in peace. I remember seeing Snow Patrol, the Caesars and probably countless others who were "small" and blew up. I know popular artists still like to play this joint, but frankly, i'd rather pay for them to play at the Fillmore...Popscene lines are notoriously long and you're never sure if you'll get in or not. Dance! Dance! Dance! Dance! Woooo... man o' man. This place has offers some of the best artist to come around the bay area... I mean, if you're looking to see a performance from an UBER hip about to break band, you will most likely find them here on a thursday night. The crowd is PACKED and the groove is high. Beware: the drunks lurk hard at this place. I got nudged, pushed, leaned on. Yet, I've found the drunks are of a friendly nature here... definately the type that slober a "sorry" after they spill their drinks on you, which is... well...nice. If you stay after the concert or go on a night when it's just a DJ spinning, you are in for some of the best dancing known to the world. I danced so hard I think my butt cheeks fell off. read more

Popscene has to be my favorite club... I mean we are lucky to have something like this as I've been to clubs all over the world and they all have the usual techno, house, hip hop, trance and that other good stuff. But nothing like popscene...You can get your dancing in and see a band at the same and see interesting style and people. Like the Dancing NINJA hes my hero! (inside joke;) I love the fact that you can look at their calender and find all the artists on myspace and see if you like them or not before choosing to go. It gives you a chance to see a band in a up and close setting without paying that big ticket price, and all that ticketmaster fee crap. Some of my most memorable concerts attended such as Bloc Party, Phoenix, Maximo Park, The Lovemakers, The Sounds, and Shiny Toy Guns. There are also some bands that I'm glad I didn't pay more then 8 dollars as I didn't like them so much live. I have been clubbing at quite a few other places I don't feel I'm getting as ripped off on drinks for it being located in SF. I mean you go anywhere else to get the same amount of beer on tap for double the price! Now to all those people that say they feel old. I guess thats true as it is a much younger crowd but I must admit popscene has the coolest 18+ crowd I have seen. You guys need to go to the club City Nights on their 18+ nights and there is so much testosterone in the air! You will appreciate the Popscene 18+ crowd after that. My only complaints is waiting outside way passed when opening time is supposed to move when the line is not moving, the guys bathroom is generally flooded at least half the times i go, and of course the people that super drunk (but that can be avoided). Cool place to go and listen to live music and some great 80's, new wave, indie music. It is 18+ to get in, and 21+ to drink. So if that bothers you, then you might want to stay away. As for me, younger girls as long as they are 18+ works for me. Depending on the band playing for the night, i think the cover charge changes, and it can be super packed, or pretty chill inside depending. I try to go here on Thursday nights when I'm not at Holy Cow, and i usually am never disappointed. Drinks aren't too pricey, and $3 PBR is always a good option. Great spot to see and hear indie bands that are very talented, and who knows, maybe one day when they get famois, you can say, "I saw them when they were just getting started." read more

Awkward placement of stage directly behind a structural support beam. I don't get it. I think it would be much better if they renovated the place and turned the rear lounge/bar area into a "stage" and somehow make the current stage always part of the dance floor. Then again, it is a business and they get more from alcohol sales than from people dancing. I get it. But hey, they can remove the booths by the entrance and replace it with a bar. I'm not an interior designer but I am just saying that I think the space could be better maximized for performances. I've seen smaller places better laid out. I think the major appeal of this place is that they feature great artists, so maybe if the artists would say something. I love to dance, especially to the great mix that's usually blaring there at night. I don't mind the young scene kids, and all that bollocks. Fact is, the music is good, and when a hot band plays, it's often great (i.e. Ima Robot). Like what everyone else says, it's "intimate." So who knows, maybe there is a lot wrong with popscene, but my eyes are usually closed, and my arms flailing... and that's great enough for me. read more

I. LOVE. This. Place. So what if it's 18+? That only means that there are virtually no lines at the bar, so I can get my crunk on on a Thursday night at a lightening fast pace. They call themselves the "premiere indie nightclub", so if you're not into indie music this is probably not your scene. But if you are, you have got to check this place out! It's a very intimate venue, which means the artists are always a very short bra-toss away. It's always decently ventilated, and never too packed. They usually invite electronic/pop oriented indie artists to play, so the music is very danceable. I used to go here during my Berkeley years since you can come when you're 18. Overall fun, danceable music, but can be a bit of a bridge and tunnel, I'm 18 and experimenting with alcohol (OMG, YEAH!!!!!!!) scene. I know, another 18+ club this 21+ has been to... Well, I came here for a concert last year-- The Ting Tings! Everyone was British. No joke. My friend and I were the only people I heard without an accent the whole night, except maybe the bartenders. But I didn't really hear them. Nor did they hear me, apparently. 2 tequila sprites somehow meant 2 dark beers that were DISGUSTING. I thought I'd give them a try. Time to try something new, right? Wrong. Never again! The music afterwards was all like 80's British pop. Not really my thing, but it became my thing for the night. I tried to make the best of it, all the while still trying to ignore that rude British girl from behind us during the show. We're sorry for moving around, but we couldn't see either! Gosh. Popscene is actually lame. The inside is a sad sight and underwhelming. The stage is tiny, and I hated seeing live bands there. Set-up took forever, as they had to haul equipment up and down a tiny set of stairs and squeeze past the crowd standing there. Thursday night is dance night, apparently. So I went and watched people shake their shimmies all up and down the floo'. What was nice though, is being surrounded by bars on two sides. You got the liquor side and the beer side and you know you'll pay out the ass for either. On the awesome side, there are three projectors and the ceiling looks like a couch in some places. Rad..? On occasion there's an indie song played, but mostly I did not agree with the house music which I sat out in one of the comfy booths. I'd come here again if I had an under age friend and 20 bucks to throw into oblivion. read more

This was my home for many years on a thursday. and everytime i go home (i live in London now) i always plan my trip so i am there for at least one if not two Popscenes. I have seen so many amazing bands: Muse, Amy Winehouse, Bloc Party, Kate Nash, The Kills, Wallpaper, Albert Hammond Jr, The Ting Tings, Blaqk Audio, Robyn, Calvin Harris, The Klaxons, Lily Allen, Hot Hot Heat, The Killers, Bloody Beetroots, DJ AM, and so many more The music is awesome: a bit indie, a bit electro, 80s, mash ups, 60s, soul, a touch mainstream, britpop. basically good music to dance and sing along to. It recently moved from its SOMO venu 330 Ritch Street to Hayes Valleys The Rickshaw Stop, but frankly while the venue is different - the club and its people are the same. if only there was something similar out here.... *que whistful sigh* read more

I'm 22 and I really really like this place. It's not usually the first place I think of when I want to go out, these days I go to places based solely on the headliners of the night. But this place has really great headliners: Fake Blood, Passion Pit, The Gossip, Ting Tings, etc... Anyways, I don't mind the crowd at all, I think it's a good mix of people. I love to dance and not be judged and this place is perfect for that. I love the mix of music, last time I went they played 80's retro and some 90's club hits which were awesome to dance and sing a long to. Pop-scene may be one of longest running "rock" clubs in the bay area, but its crowd is one of the youngest. On Thursday nights, under the disguise of fake-IDs, teens barely the age of 18 regularly flock to Pop-Scene, many of them arriving from the Easy Bay. Oddly, you don't meet many locals at Pop-Scene. The reason: Pop-scene has outlived its charm. Watching the sweaty hipsters dance to the latest rock-n-roll, old middle-age men lurk around the bar with their tongues out, telling themselves that, "if the grass is green, play ball!" Yuck. But that's an all-too-familiar scene, since Pop-Scene is a magnet for young girls and guys not even old enough to drink. There's a word for this type of scene: statutory rape. Covering your eyes won't help placate the suckfest, either. On the front of the flyer, in bold fricken words, they vaunt about having the best DJs, experienced people who know their shit since they've been doing it for a long, long time. But listening to their mixes, it was as if this was their first time handling a record player...er, CD player. (The record players is a front, to provide them with cred. Most of the time, they DJ off of a CD-DJ.) Indeed, all the DJs DIDN'T beat match, or even tried to. In fact, no single song was segued nicely, but haphazardly crammed like a discordant train-wreak. And they call themselves DJs... At least the bouncers do their jobs. They're dicks...but nice dicks. Without hesitation, they'll throw your ass out if you're an underage drinker, but they're kind enough to chat about the stupidest things. But without a doubt, the most egregious flaw is the lack of air condition. Yes, SF is pretty chilly, but that doesn't mean the owners can skimp on the cooling. When you have 200 people in a room, dancing and sweating and kissing and grinding each other, the room will get hot. Extremely hot. Never, ever go to pop-scene if you're working suede. Not that you should, anyways. In fact, skip pop-scene altogether. Unless you like horrible transitions, horrible teenagers, and horrible ventilation. read more

Time/Date: Friday 9pm * block party listening party Type/Quality: Indie pop music bar; I would call it a Hipster's Paradise but it was more like a Hipster brothel. Its a little run down but they keep the hipsters nice and trendy. Its 18 and up, but didn't feel too young. It was okay but you have to be into that particular scene to really get your money's worth. It would have been better if I had ear plugs but the band had a good range and wasn't bad on some of the songs where you could hear the vocals. Price/Quanity: 10 bucks to get in. Drinks are 3 or 4 bucks for a beer. Service/Accesibility: Its a bar with regular service. Nothing particular or unusual. There is no food, which considering the size is a giant waste. Structure/Ambience: Its two large rooms, one for sitting one for dancing. There is a stage and bar in the enterence room, and the back area has a pool table. It feels like an indie club, a little bit like Tranny shack, but without the drag queens and queers. Its just Hipster kids and hipster not kids? read more

The music they play is AWESOME (ranging from oldies to more new stuff) BUT!! Why on a thursday night?? Argh! For those of us that work friday mornings (especially if its the morning shift) it's hard to make it out and be completely carefree knowing that in a few hours we have to get up. Anyhow, i personally didn't use the restroom there, but from seeing how it looked liked when the doors swung open and close it seemed pretty grody :( Apart from that, as long as you go with a few friends you will in all most probability have a great time :) There's a pretty good amount of space for dancing. I've always had a good time here..maybe it was the performer, maybe it was my company but every time was a blast!! The venue is small and intimate but I never felt the show was over sold and I didn't feel like a sardine packed in on Ritch. Drinks are standard, bathrooms aren't too bad. The only minor drawback is that the line moves a little slow out front....If I have tickets to a show, I don't really want too long to get in, I understand you need to check ID's but I felt the line at Popscene moved a little slower than at other venues.
