Delicious dinner and terrific service; this was the perfect choice as we adjusted to Rome after our travels. Sitting outside on a beautiful September evening added to the charm. We started with wine and espresso to get our bearings, moved into a fresh caprese, and then enjoyed mains of pasta and chicken breast with arugula. Each dish was tasty (the caprese was my favorite--the fresh mozzarella was a marvel) and the service made the evening sing. Popi Popi was recommended to me and my friends by a professor at Padova University, while taking a train from Milano to Venezia. He told us he grew up in Roma, and Popi Popi was one of his favorite restaurants. On the strength of his recommendation, we visited, and it did not disappoint. The carciofi alla giudia was incredible, the cacio e pepe absolutely delicious, and the tiramisu was the best I've ever had. We ended up going twice (carbonara was just as good). The best restaurant in all of Italy, in my opinion! Such a warm atmosphere with friendly staff and amazing food. Must haves are the stuffed zucchini flowers, the carbonara, and the tiramisu! Travelled all over Italy, eating my way through all the major cities, and I could not stop comparing everything I had to the food I ate at Popi Popi! Great atmosphere, super local. We were the only ones speaking English in the restaurant, but luckily the staff speaks English which is great. However, you cannot split the bill on cards. The service was great, as was the food. We got bruschetta al pomodoro to start which had an interesting twist with celery added to it. As my main dish I got spaghetti con vongole, it was ok not the best thing on the menu. My other two friends got the popi popi pizza which was amazing, I highly recommend, and the trippa alla romana which I didn't try but looked very delicious. One of the best meals I had in Rome and for the most reasonable price ever. Probably didn't spend over €40. I had a custom arugula salad (BEST ARUGULA I HAVE EVER HAD) with cherry tomatoes and some balsamic/olive oil. Not even exaggerating it was amazing, the peppery arugula and fresh tomatoes were a perfect match. Their mussels were somethin' else too...mussels are usually super "meh" for me, but I saw a bunch of people eating them and started to crave them. Best choice ever, I've never had mussels so good, for something so cheap in the world of seafood, they made it taste like a million bucks. They were so fresh, cooked to perfection and the broth was mouthwatering. Dipped some of their fresh bread in it...drool worthy! Had a Margherita pizza here too that was seeeeriously good. Our waiter was super nice and we didn't feel like we were being taken advantage of at all. He brought out some complimentary limoncello for us, and was super pleasant. The ambiance was also awesome, the seating area was right in front (or back) of a beautiful old church. Definitely a local gem, will certainly be back whenever I'm in Rome again. read more

Pane(bread) is charged at about $2-$4 Unless you REALLY REALLY are hell bent on some crappy, tasteless bread, I strongly recommend you let the waiter know you DO NOT want bread, and make sure you will be not charged for coperto. My girlfriend and I ate here. On our trip to Italy, we learned ALOT. To Italian merchants, tourists are prey from which they can extract an extra 2€ or more. If you do not speak Italian well and are not a local, I can pretty much guarantee you will be thrown some bread on the table and charged for it, or, be charged an illegal "coperto" fee on your check. Also, make sure you get your change back. Italians do not leave tips. That is how the system works in Italy. They pay exact amount of the check and get all their change back, and the workers wages are based off no tips. Remember, in Italy there is no tax after the price listed. The price you see is the price you pay. In Italy, locals DO NOT leave a tip and neither should you, even if you are from a country accustomed to leaving a tip in your home country. This is how the system works in Italy, NO TIP. Their wages are based on their pay and that's it. DO NOT BE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF. I'm telling you, if you leave a tip, in their mind, the restaurant is silently smirking in their mind thinking "he he! Thanks for the extra 2 Euros sucker!!" In Italy, be just like the locals; eat some easy to make at home, pizza or pasta, see the price on the menu, add up the exact amount shown on the menu prices(hopefully they don't give you a different menu with "tourist prices") pay ONLY the exact amount, get your change, and leave NO TIP. Don't let them swindle you for your 2€-4€ out of pride and principle. Obviously, my girlfriend and I never returned here. Perhaps yelp can put a little bit of balance into the giant scamming and swindling of tourists that come here. It seems ALL restaurants in Rome treat locals one way, but try to rip off tourists. I'm sure not all, but it sure as hell seems like it. Food wasn't all that either. Don't understand what the big deal for Italian food is. My girlfriend and I love "ethnic" foods, and thus far, their pizza and pasta in Italy has got NOTHING on Mexican, Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, Indian, Japanese, food in Los Angeles. I was already disappointed with the poor service we received during the meal but when I went in to pay for bill w card I got to experience the disdain shown for your foreign customers first hand. Here's a hint. Even if you don't like English speaking customers eating at your establishment show some level of customer service. "HOLY DANG HECK" is what I legitimately said after taking a bite of tiramisu here. I ordered the risotto which is misleading, or maybe I just don't understand that "cream of shrimp" means no actual shrimp, so I just got a pile of creamy rice that I didn't know what to do with. Not taking away any stars just because I ordered wrong - my family ordered pizzas which had amazingly delicious thin crust that melts in your mouth, interesting toppings and pretty large portions. No tap water so you will pay for each bottle in the hot summer sun (suspicious emoji). It's in a cool neighborhood - eat a later dinner and ask to sit outside. GET THE TIRAMISU oh my god you may never have a better one and you're in Rome on vacation (probably) so just order the damn dessert. read more

When we sat as a family recounting our favorite Rome memories, this place was the hands down winner. We ate in Trastavere three times during our trip, but this was a place we stumbled upon trying to wander from the touristy area. We couldn't believe when we found this place, with tables spread across the street in the front of a church.
