Visited their food truck at NIH campus during the summer and have gone to their brick and mortar location. Pop up poutine specializes in Montreal style cuisine (has similarities French food). Their trademark dish is poutine, which are fries covered with different toppings. The traditional choice is cheese curds and gravy, but they also have various vegetable and meat toppings. Their smoked meat (tastes similar to corned beef) is also very good (tender and full of flavor). They also have steamies (hot dogs), chicken tenders and Montreal style bagels and pastries. This outing I ordered the Jacques platter (French fries with slices of smoked meat), a tourtiere (beef pie) and sausage roll. All very very tasty. Friendly service, filling and delicious food! I called ahead because I had a Groupon which they did not give me trouble about using. They also have a menu of daily specials which I will have to take advantage of in the future. The building is on the corner of a strip that is nestled between large business buildings. Because I was splitting the meal with someone who did not want mustard, they offered to put mustard packets on the side for the Smoked Meat sandwich. The rye bread was soft and fluffy and the sandwiched was filled with thin cut meat that was well seasoned. The traditional gravy for the poutine is nicely seasoned and the spices in it give it a mild kick. Between two people, this was a very filling meal. read more

This place is now called "Taste of Montreal" AND "Rice Around the World"! This was fairly close to work so I wanted to try it. It's a little mom & pop shop style - a small lobby area just for ordering and open kitchen style. The service was easy with self ordering on the iPad. I love poutine (I only had it in Canada). But however I did not get the poutine and got their Montreal Smoked Meat sandwich. The Montreal Smoked Meat is a combination of corned beef and pastrami. It went well with the mustard! The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because of the pricing. It was $15 for just a sandwich (two slices of bread, not a French bread or anything. I wasn't even full - I should've gotten the poutine! I'm biased from the concept as I love all poutines, but this was more of a 3.5. In general menu sounded better than it tastes. Baseline poutine? Home cut fries, and fresh curds. I do love that the gravy is set aside, but even reheated didn't really melt the curds. Both the gravy and curds felt overly salty, but maybe been a bad batch. Still met what I wanted. Hard pass on The American, which I see is no longer listed on the menu. A bunch of fried goods sounds like a great time, but was just way too much oil in every bite to be enjoyable. At least they seem receptive to feedback when something doesn't work? And I'm a big fan of Montreal smoked meat in general, with this being a good option. They even make a decent hash with it that I like, but that one was really oily as well. I think it's certainly better eating fresh, but given how out of the way this location it is I might be restricted to just take-out. Decided to finally try Pop Up Poutine heading home from errands around the Pike and ordered the Poutine over fries. The restaurant offers traditional gravy (beef) and a vegetarian option as well! This is 100% on me: We ordered our poutine via the website and were late picking up (pick up time was 15 minutes after order was placed) so it was a huge bummer that the food was cold by the time I arrived. The gravy is served in its own (paper, not plastic!) container (so the fries don't become soggy) and that was still warm enough to enjoy. The cheese curds were not squeaky :(. The amount of gravy given was perfect for the amount of fries and honestly, the gravy is good enough to drink on its own... I thought the fries were pretty great even when doused with gravy, they were not overly soggy. I feel the cost of the item is on the high side since I didn't get any meat added or anything, but I am happy to have tried the poutine for sure. Solid gem of a place hidden in Rockville. I have had real poutine from Quebec and have cravings for it at times but the cheese curds are not legal in the US for import. In comes pop up poutine, they make cheese curds fresh in house and are mozzarella based. Good but not exactly the same. The fries and cheese were a bit salty for my taste so maybe ask for just a dash of salt. The smoked brisket sandwich was amazing. Was happy to see that Pop-up Poutine *popped up* on my Doordash app. I had wanted to try this place for awhile, when they weren't available on weekends or delivery for me to drive there. My partner and I ordered a poutine with traditional gravy and montreal smoked meat, an eclair (not pictured), cream puffs, and a Vegetarian Delight poutine (not pictured). Everything was packed well -- gravy had its own container so the fries wouldn't arrive soggy. Cheese curds were squeaky good. Gravy was yummy, though I couldn't done with maybe another container for a more "authentic amount" of slather, if my memories visiting the True North serve me correctly. As opposed to another reviewer who really liked the desserts and the poutine less so, I was not impressed at all with the eclair and cream puffs. Maybe it had to do with them being delivered -- but they were both a bit too hard (maybe kept colder for delivery?) and didn't have much depth of flavor or interesting textures. In other words, they reminded me of grocery store desserts -- inoffensive, what you'd expect -- except with a slight restaurant markup. That's too bad, but I'm glad at least their signature items satisfied us. We also ordered an order of the original poutine, as well as the poutine with the fried cheese curds. Both were good, but do yourself a favor and get the poutine with the cheese curds. Trust me. Everything was fried perfectly, the gravy was delicious and it was a decent portion size for the price. The Rubens were ok, but definitely not the best I've ever had. The sauerkraut was not tangy and there was not enough dressing on the sandwich. I also got an order of the macrons. I don't remember the first two flavors, the red and white ones. I think the red one was raspberry. Whatever it was, it was really I was hoping the others would be just as good, but sadly I was disappointed. I think the white one was caramel. It was ok. Just ok. The pistachio one just tasted sweet. No other real discernible flavor there. I got one of their lunch specials, the Montreal combo, which came with a half Montreal smoked meat sandwich, a half poutine, and a drink. This place is the only spot around that has the authentic Montreal smoked meat, and it's a delicious corned beef/pastrami/brisket style of meat with great seasoning. It was rich without feeling heavy, and tasted like a very juicy, flavorful corned beef. Definitely worth checking out. The poutine, though - it was so good that it instantly made me realize every Gastropub version I've had has been a lie. This rich, thick sauce - which is vegetarian, amazingly! - has tons more peppery, mushroom umami flavor than I expected, and the big chunks of cheese curds were perfect, too. The poutine is absolutely a must-try, whether you top it with meats or not. This place also sells the elusive Montreal bagel, which I've seen on travel and food shows but never experienced. It's a smaller, less risen bagel that's supposed to be a bit sweeter. We got the sesame version and it was amazing - tons of sesame seeds, a nice hard crust outside with a soft, delicious inside, great flavor throughout. (Did I eat two roughly seconds after saying I was just having a bite of one? Absolutely. I blame deliciousness.) Don't skip the desserts here, either - the macarons are great and I'm now obsessed with the Nanaimo bar, a delicious three layered frozen dessert with a graham crackery base, custard icing, and a dark, sweet chocolate ganache. read more

I have visited Canada numerous times over the years, since I was a little girl, but I don't recall ever eating "Traditional" Canadian cuisine! However, very recently I found myself googling traditional Canadian foods when a family member was going for a week to Canada. Ironically, this Food Truck Eatery - called "Pop-Up Poutine" - serves up almost all the foods that make the list of most traditional Canadian foods! So, I just had to try them out when they were making a stop in Northern Virginia not too far from where I live! (they are based in Rockville, MD). I decided to try out the poutine, which I've had before in the US but they were selling this as the real deal! I got mine with "meat," which turned out to be corned beef. I also ordered 2 traditional Canadian sweets: a butter tart and Nanaimo bar. When I brought my food home, I also discovered that I ended up with a hot dog too! The poutine was very good. Poutine is generally not my favorite dish but they did a really good job with it, and it was a portion that easily could feed 2 people! The Nanaimo Bar was delicious! The bar is very unique with its layers of vanilla custard, coconut, graham crust, and topped with ganache! The Butter Tart was also great and very usual; I was surprised to find raisins in it! They also sell macrons, eclairs and cream puffs, but the butter tart and Nanaimo bar are 2 sweets you just don't find at bakeries in the area. This is a new truck to the neighborhood. It's about time since for months we kept getting the same trucks over and over. Most of them are not bad but you just get tired of the same food - after all one of the advantages of food trucks is the possibility for variety. I had their Butter Chicken before but unfortunately, its mediocre at best. Things that drop the rating down slightly. Hours. They're operating hours at their store are short. I've also gotten their Montreal bagels, and they're so good!! Got a great texture and are liberal with the toppings. I actually love just eating them plain. I think it's usually a food truck but they also have a location. The location is not super easy to find, but is convenient for neighboring businesses and federal govt building staff. I found the place from a Yelp search while I was hanging out at Walter Reed.....it's a little out of the way and a little un-friendly for parking/dining in (I think a bunch of their business is food-truck based, so that kind of makes sense). BUT. One order of poutine with fried cheese curds (which ALSO comes with regular cheese curds) made a satisfying lunch for both me & my husband. The gravy was really good and I would have been happy to have twice as much, but it was good as it was. In terms of the food quality, it was cooked to order and warm.
