Best BBQ in town, don't forget those amazing hushpuppies. Can't wait till I'm back in town, that…read morewill be my first stop.

Red Bridges has been doing this since 1946, with three generations of the family carrying on the…read moretradition of cooking pork over hickory. There's something I respect about a restaurant that knows exactly what it is and doesn't feel the need to reinvent itself every six months. I placed my order over the phone, the customer service was great, and everything was ready when I arrived... a solid start. Now, understand what you're coming here for. When they say "BBQ" they mean pork, with an option of chopped or sliced, but pork is the main character either way. Yeah sure, there's chicken on the menu, and brisket makes a guest appearance on Thursdays, but this isn't your giant bbq menu, ribs-and-everything-else type of bbq stop. Same energy with the bbq sauce: this isn't a "sample some regional sauces type of place". They have their one sauce option and they're standing by it. I ordered the large plate which comes standard with chopped pork, red slaw, and hushpuppies. My first reaction was that the pork portion looked pretty small for the price. Maybe I'm cheap, maybe I'm hungry, maybe both, but compared with my recent meal at Gary's in China Grove, this felt like considerably less pork for noticably more money. Portion size aside, I'm still trying to find the traditional NC pork bbq that makes everything click for me. I keep trying it, and I keep thinking about carnitas. That's my personal preference showing up, and I recognize that it isn't necessarily a failure on the restaurant's part. The red slaw was good, with the finely chopped texture I really like. I just would have appreciated a little more pork to balance out how much slaw was in the to-go container. But the hushpuppies? Those deserve their own paragraph. These were ridiculously large, Godzilla monster-finger-sized hushpuppies... I've literally never seen any like them. A light outer crust, soft as butter inside, and easily the standout of my meal. I asked for ranch to dip them in (it doesn't come standard) and that combination absolutely delivered. Five out of five for the hushpuppies, with a separate round of applause for the ranch on its own. Overall, great service, history worth respecting, and hushpuppies I'll remember. I'm glad I stopped and tried it for myself, but based on my tastes and the value of the plate, I don't feel a strong need to make another stop.
