The crumb cake is the best I've ever had and I've had lots of crumb cake puts Styertowne and BW two shame

I was looking forward to a legit small-town baked goods and picked up a couple donuts and a cinnamon roll before headed to some local trails. I ordered asked for an apple cider donut, and while she was grabbing that I was looking at what else to get, I ended up getting a Boston Creme donut and a cinnamon bun. Later on the trail when I opened bag to eat the goods, I saw that instead of an apple cider donut I'd been given some sort of chocolate donut? I guess that's my bad for not checking, but it's hard to imagine how apple cider donut gets misheard. As it turns out, the chocolate donut and the cinnamon bun were inedible. They were so dry and stale. The chocolate donut was so dry it literally fell apart into crumbs. I was eating these at noon, so it's not like they were end of day goods. The Boston Creme did taste fresh and it was okay, but 1 out of 3 is pretty bad odds. read more

Place looks like time forgot, but that's okay by me. Everything (and I do mean EVERYTHING) I've had there over the years has been great, and the prices are more than fair. Crumb cake and Meltaways are stand outs. My go-to bakery. Not too many traditional bakeries like this anymore. I order cakes from here, and they are always delicious. This is a traditional bakery. It has all of the pastries and bakes the types of cakes you desire. When I go in, I have a hard time picking up only what I ordered because everything looks so delicious. read more

I find pompton bakery to be exceptional. I go in a few or more times per month sometimes two or three times in the same week. Today I got croissants, small meltaways, crumb cake, a cheese ring, fresh baked bread and a blueberry muffin. All were excellent. The cheese ring and baked bread were for a neighbor and he phoned me to say they were delicious. I'll continue to go there regularly. And I'd like to point out that the owner Nadia, is a great guy, very personable. read more

I tried this place 3 times each time the same thing happened. I thought I would give them a chance to help out the small business. Yesterday I bought a maple walnut cake from here. Came home served it to my guests. I was never so embarrassed. The cake was so stale like it was made weeks ago and frozen. The icing was rancid. Next day many of us had gotten stomach issues. Was just in the area and wanted some sweets and I happen to come across this small bakery in town. It's a really small bakery. But nonetheless it's cozy inside. Everything you'll want in a small shop, they have cookies, cupcakes, bagels, pastries etc. my favorite was the rainbow cookies, the tri color Italian cookies/cake. I gotten a few of everything when I was there. My opinion the Oreos cupcake were delicious. read more

Was in Pompton and needed to grab some cupcakes at the last minute... unfortunately, I have to agree with the other reviews that their baked goods are stale and there was a pretty curt attitude. I wouldn't have dinged them much for the latter, I'm used to attitude in this area of NJ, but the freshness issue really ruins it. It's odd how consistent that complaint has been - at some point someone must have bought fresh baked goods from them? It's not as if they start out stale. My neighbor told me she was going to pick up a pie and cookies and I was intrigued. She raved it was the only way how to do all her baking.... So fast forward~ This past Thanksgiving they made my family really happy by cooking Snowflake rolls. I picked them up that holiday morning. They were perfect for our meal and leftovers. Let me start off by saying we are big supporters Of small businesses, being owners in the food industry of a mom and pop specialty shop. . I would only write a review to help a business, but today's experience was beyond disgusting. Being in retail & working with customers day after day for 30 years, we know it takes a certain personality to be able to do it. When my store opens its doors each day, it's like being on stage so we put a smile on and we give our customers 110%. Walking into Pompton Lakes bakery this morning right out the gate felt eerie. Forget that the place itself felt like I was walking in a time warp. An older woman walks out with the biggest Puss on her face , doesn't even say hello & just looks at me. So I looked at her and jovial said "good morning how are you". You would think anyone would respond with. " good how are you ". she says "OK". For a split second I thought I was on candid camera. I asked her the difference between the melts away and different danish rings, and in a rough gruff voice she explains. Then we're on to the donuts, I was not sure how many I was going to get what is the big deal. At first I said eight , but I would like them in different boxes. Well when I asked her for different boxes she had a hissy fit and says. "I just put together the dozen size box". I looked at her and said "seriously are you kidding you are arguing with me over a box". And then I told her "she was the rudest person I've ever had to deal with, I am a customer". She honestly could care less. It was as if my $42.50 was nothing. Honestly if I wasn't going to see my grandkids I totally would've left. But I held my composure and knew she was just an ugly miserable person. As good as their meltaway's might be I would never step foot in that bakery ever again They should be embarrassed to have someone like her representing them and if I can make a suggestion they should take my $42.50 and send the old lady to a class in customer service. So hey, if you'd like to go somewhere either for a good laugh or to get abused have At it, otherwise shop elsewhere. read more

Small mom and pop bakery that is cash only. I have picked up churros here, cheese danish and some cookies which both have been good. Staff seems friendly and helpful. Every time I have been in the shelves have slim pickings so not sure if they were busy and wiped out or they just don't have a large selection of baked goods. When is the area and need a dessert or a sweet treat, I will stop back in but wouldn't go out of my way. read more

Nothing worse than stale baked goods. We purchased a menagerie of items & unfortunately, most proved to be "past their prime". I hate leaving negative reviews but I was really embarrassed after bringing these wares to a party of friends I rarely get to see. We ended up throwing them out. :( read more

I am a lifetime resident of Pompton Lakes and remembered when this bakery was good. Now it seems that everything I get is stale - cake, bread, cookies etc. when my 10 yr old son doesn't want to finish his cookie because "it's too hard" there is a problem. read more

Do not go there unless you want poor service and at least in my case stale bread. My purchase was a large rye OK baked today NO and the price was $5.75 a bit pricey no matter how you slice stale bread. The women took it out of the re-frig out of sight but still cold. We went there to get some bread and some pastries and boy so we regret it. My husband got an eclair and Churro and the churro was harder than frozen pole! I went against my judgement of reading some comments on this page and listened to my co-worker who said " this place is awesome. I came here to order my fiance a cake for her birthday. To begin I went the day before around 3pm and asked if it was possible to make me a cake for tomorrow at around this time? he said yes no probem. The cake was done and i went to check up on it the next day. They had the cake already made and ready to eat. We got home and tasted it. It was a bit on the tasted like old cake. but it the frosting and everything was good. The bananas and strawberries were fresh. Probably wont be returning. read more

So as with any new town I have to try most things first... I've been here a 1st 2nd and even a 10th time. The black and white cookies are frigin amazing also the crumb cake yum yum yum and the churros if u go right when she opens up u might be able to get one when they are warm right out of the oven...OMG ONE OF MY NEW FAVORITE SPOTS.... I have never had a bad experience at this bakery and have been coming for years. The woman behind the counter is a bit crabby but she's grown on me. It is cash only so be prepared. I highly recommend the melt away cake. A huge MOIST iced crumb cakey thingy that is absolutely amazing!!! I bring this cake to every gathering and we call it "crack cake" because it is so addicting and demolished by the end if the night. The bread is always good and fresh. Never had an issue with anything being stale. The hot cross buns and iced crumb cakes for Easter are always fresh and moist. My family has all relocated to South Jersey and you know what that means...not a good bakery in sight! I always load up here on my way down to deliver the goods. It's a shame they have gotten some bad reviews since it's rare to find a good bakery anymore. Give them a shot and not late in the day when things are picked over and might not be as fresh. In a rush after work, near closing time, the owner was super helpful and patient helping me get something for a work event. He didn't rush me, offered options patiently and was so pleasant even though he was closing soon, I wouldn't have known, BTW, the cheesecake was well priced and creamy! read more

I wish everything tasted a little more fresh. You don't go into a bakery expecting the quality of their pastries to be less tasty than a chain like Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks. The bread was also stale, especially the end pieces. Disappointing. read more

The muffin from here was good, but the surly staff and countless warnings about cash only make the experience less than optimal here. The muffin was fairly crumbly and a tad on the dry side, but the flavor was strong and good. The staff who was slow and cranky turned me off though. I will sadly probably continue to patronize the friendly staff at the nearby Starbucks. read more

i love this bakery!!!! i use to live in p lakes 27 yrs ago but then moved to cape may county where there is only ONE true bakery left!! i missed this bakery, so every time i make a trip up here i have to go in stock up....one of my favorites is thier salt sticks they have on the weekends....but they do have the best dark jelly filled powdered donuts...i love thier walnut glazed coffee cake also....everytime i came here i was truly never dissappointed.....chk it out read more

My Grandfather introduced me to their poppyseed buns at his house in the 1950's. I've loved them and their pecan danish since. Whenever I travel to New Jersey to visit my aunt I come on a day the bakery is open and pre-order my poppyseed buns and enjoy trying the new things on their shelves. Just can't find those Poppyseed buns anywhere in PA where I shop. read more

Bought pastries here for Mother's Day to bring to a family dinner. The pastries were stale. They were hard and tasteless. Very disappointed, I called the bakery to express my concern. Even more disappointing the owner was rude. She indicated I had to warm them up. I'm sorry, fresh pastries do not require heat as a prerequisite. She mumbled something about them being frozen, which would explain why they were hard, but sad if they were pre-frozen. Then she said she was closing up and "what do you want me to do about it." I explained I could get right there, but she hung up. I will never buy from this place again. read more
