Artisanal coffee from tree to cup, this farm is a true labor of love - and also a B&B. Great fun seeing every step of the intensely laborious process to grow, harvest and prepare the beans: 7 pounds ripe fruit yield just 1 pound of finished product. Hosts, owners and coffee fanatics Kurt L. and Sebastian L. serve tour guests several *fine* cups in their new-new "convention center" and tasting room. Oh yeah, whole beans are $34/lb, ulp. Tours offered Tues-Sat at 11am, $20 for two hours, call ahead for reservations and directions! First hour is drinking coffee plus history of the drink starting in 1580 plus q&a. Second hour is walking around the 8-acre hillside at 3,000 feet elevation to see the cherries on the trees and the washing, drying, cleaning, sorting and roasting equipment. Tour concludes with (what else!) another cup of fresh brew. You'll leave Pomorrosa as well caffeinated as you like lol. Located up in the twisty hills served by PR-511 but a bridge is out so the obvious GPS route doesn't work. About 2 hours drive from San Juan: Autopista 52 south, to PR-10 North, to PR-143 East (narrow winding road!), to PR-511 again, and up the steep-steep entrance. Look for the orange, banana and cacao trees on your way in. Coffee geek history quiz: 1. What did Africans, discoverers of this wonderful plant, make from the cherry skin 400+ years ago? 2. Why did pope Clement gave his blessing to coffee about 1600? 3. Why did the English spurn coffee houses and choose tea? 4. What country drinks the most cups per capita today? 5. Which parts of the coffee tree have caffeine?

Delightful environment to enjoy mountain grown coffee.

Not just a coffee hacienda but also has small cabins for rent). We arrived at 4:30 p.m. On July 4th and were able to have three coffees each and an enjoyable conversation with the owners' son. We purchased ten and a half pounds of coffee between the three of us so that should give you an idea how much we liked the coffee. WARNING: We used yelp to find this place and it was way off. Use google and expect to lose service occasionally.

This is not just a bed and breakfast: it's also a coffee plantation! My mom and i secured a visit last minute because by chance i found reviews online and the owner sent me instructions on how to get to his Hacienda which were very helpful as we came up the mountain. You will be told it takes two hours from San Juan to here (and i drive fast) but the reality is more like 3 hours when you are not sure and you hesitate, etc. I was worried about this so we left early and luckily, were the first to arrive. No one arrived on time except us. This is the only "bad" part: Although the tour takes two hours, this is from start to end and does not include 1) waiting for the late comers to start the tour and 2) waiting for everyone who has arrived to use the one restroom 3) paying for visit/buying coffee; the larger the group the longer it takes. Therefore, you want to be smart, and allocate yourself one day to do this visit. We arrived at 11 am and left at 2:30.. After that, you have to drive down the mountain and by that time, you are hungry! So.. it's not a "bad" part if you were smart and planned well and assumed it would take almost all day.. I was not and therefore missed out on my afternoon activity because after the lunch we had it was almost 4:30 and then we had to head back towards Ponce.. which is another 45 minutes. *The owner will indicate a good address for you to have lunch at the bottom of the mountain! LISTEN to him! It's a great place with a great view. Some of the people in the group said they would go but did not.. and they missed out. Get good directions though because your GPS will not find it. Its easy though; once you descend the mountain, you take a right towards Adjuntas on route 10 (not left towards Ponce) and you drive a little under ten minutes and on the right hand side; you will see the restaurant on top of a hill.* Going back to the coffee visit: time was my only regret: i had expected the tour to be 2 hours in and out, and therefore that at the end of the tour i would descend down the mountain and do another visit i had planned, but this was not the case at all. it's partially my fault because in order to enjoy this place: you can't be in a rush anyway.. so i just had to say goodbye to my afternoon plan. As far as the visit itself and the coffee plantation: it's in a really gorgeous setting. We were greeted very warmly by a German man whom has been living in PR for 42 years and whom is passionate about coffee! He treated us to a special house brew (so good) in his cool outdoor kitchen with tiles imported from Mexico and as guests arrived, we mingled with people from everywhere which was quite fun and makes the experience cooler. Once everyone had arrived, we started the tour. The tour is composed in two parts: 1) information on the history of coffee 2) visit of the plantation and the process by which coffee is grown. In the end, we were treated to espresso and were able to pay for the tour ($15 pp) and buy coffee if we wanted -which of course everyone should do because 1) its good and 2) it helps the owner. The owner is a kind man whom has lived an interesting life, taken a risk and followed his passion! I highly recommend checking this place out when you are in PR for more than a couple days. It's definitely another world up in the lush mountains! :)

There are few people you meet in this world that charm you from the minute you meet them. Kurt the owner is one of those people, the stories in the tour range from the origins of coffee, to current world events to the most recent storm impacts. The coffee on top of this is fantastic and definitely worth the time and effort!! A certain must do on the island!!

Mountain grown coffee and a beautiful view.

I'm usually not the type of person to write reviews online, but I felt that this was too good to keep to myself. Hacienda Pomarrosa is an absolutely unique experience if you have any interest at all in coffee. Kurt and Sebastian are a wealth of knowledge about coffee and the hospitality was excellent. A beautiful setting to enjoy coffee in it's finest form, the most beautiful mountain views in all of Puerto Rico. A wonderful experience in every way!

Launching from La Guancha, the dock was easy to get to and there was plenty of parking. For $28 roundtrip (as of 12/16), it was a value excursion! On this uninhabited island, there are no stores or vendors. Bring your own food, drinks, and beach comfort items. The ferry does sell drinks, some alcoholic beverages, snacks, and food (hot dogs and kebabs). You have to preorder the food in the morning and they'll cook it up fresh while you go play on the island, serving lunch at noon. For $60, you get roundtrip transportation and twelve meal and drink tickets (two tickets for food items, one ticket for snacks and drinks, including beer). The prices onboard are actually quite reasonable, so the meal tickets really aren't that much of a deal, in my opinion. You can also rent beach chairs and snorkeling gear from Island Ventures at very affordable prices. On this gorgeous island, we wanted to do it all! We wanted to hike to the lighthouse, explore the caves, play at the beach...everything! But we somehow couldn't get away from the water. We played at the beach, snorkeled, and then beached again. Snorkeling gear was only ten bucks to rent (as of 12/16), but because I can't swim and needed a life vest, I paid another two bucks for the whole shebang. While we were close to coral along the shore, it wasn't the best snorkeling environment. Not a lot of wildlife around all those human types that lined the shores. There were many fish under the dock, so we carefully explored that area. The water is a brilliant turquoise, but not very clear (it wasn't dirty, it just wasn't crystal clear), so it was often times difficult to see, even from a short distance away. Ferry leaves La Guancha at 8:30 AM on the dot, so get there early to check in and grab a seat. The forty-five minute ride each way is pretty smooth. Ferry leaves the island at 3:30 PM. That's almost six hours on the island! For us, it was just right. A perfect day on a gorgeous island with an attentive ferry staff.

The Island itself is 5 + stars, but one of the only ways to get there (Island Ventures) knocks it down a star. Island Venture Ferry Basics -- $25 per person which includes two drink tickets (can be claimed for Medalla Light, Coors Light, or soda). You can also upgrade your ticket for $10 and get 15 drink tickets (!) --Boat leaves from La Guancha at 8:30am (but you must arrive by 7:40am) and from the island at 3:30 (boards at 3). Ride takes about 45 minutes and has a lower level with shade. --They also sell hot dogs and kebabs and rent umbrellas on the ship and the ship stays docked there so you can continue to purchase drinks/food while you're on the island. Caveats: --The company holds weird hours and are hard to get a hold of, especially if you don't speak Spanish. --Their online booking system can be glitchy, my friend's reservation got mixed up for the wrong day. --Spots book up fast, book early! --They charge a fee for coolers (although we had soft/bag style coolers and were not charged). --We shared the boat with a school trip...so yea, there's that. ISLAND --AWESOME. --Walk up (down? into?) the cave. --Walk up to the lighthouse for some AMAZING views (30 minutes, bring water, we did it in flip flops but prob shouldn't have). --Love life on the beach. Watch out for jellyfish though! --Snorkel! (Not the best I've seen, but still cool). --Admire cacti and wildlife (hermit crabs and lizards everywhere!) During some seasons there are apparently sea turtles nesting! --Pack a picnic and enjoy it on the picnic tables! They also have compost "bathrooms." They smell and don't have soap, but there's TP! --Avoid the small beach to the left of the dock (if you're facing the island)-loaded with bugs! --Perfect day trip and one of my favorite activities from our Puerto Rico trip! ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND. Must go!

Best day of our trip! The ONLY reason I would take out one star is because they have no clear directions to get to the tour on the website. We put the address in the GPS and it took us 20 mins away from the actual tour. We called them and the employee we talked too seemed really annoyed that we were lost and wasn't too helpful! I just wish he had more patience. Thank God we talked Spanish if not I don't see how we would've gotten there on time with the employees attitude. You'd get a text message reminder a day before the tour and they would ask if you have food restrictions or allergies. You'd also get a reminder where the meeting spot is. We met at Banco Popular, introduced ourselves and went our merry way to the 5 different food spots. Pablo ordered the food before hand so that when the group arrived at the different restaurants/places, the food was ready and we did not have to wait that long. Our first stop was Cafe Cuatro Sombras where we had coffee and croissant ham/provolone cheese/guava butter. I liked this croissant with a hint of tanginess/sweetness from the guava. Noncoffee drinkers had options of lemonade and tea. Second stop was Señor Paleta. There's no indoor seating here so we had the delicious parcha (passion fruit) popsicle. Yum! Very refreshing, great for this warm weather! Third stop was Cafe El Punto. This place has a lot of artwork by local artists. We had ceviche de pescado and alcapurrias de la casa which were nice. Fourth stop was El Patio de Sam where we "made" our own mofongo. We had fried plantains and garlic butter, mashed them in a mortar and pestle, and added the chicken before turning the mortar upside down to get the mofongo. This was flavorful and had more moisture compared to another mofongo we had. Last stop for dessert was Vaca Brava. We had flan which was nice. We enjoyed the food, the tour, and the conversations. My friends and I had every intention of purchasing tickets online in advance but it slipped our minds. By the time we decided on going, and with the slight traffic that there was, we would make it there with only a couple minutes to spare. We tried purchasing our tickets online, but the website told us to call (most likely since we were so close to the time slot). When we called, they answered immediately. They were understanding of our situation and informed us that if we could make it there before 3:30, they could try to settle us into the slot. We sped there and made it at 3:15. They have a grass area for parking. One of the staff members helped us with filling out some forms, weighing us, and explaining some of the basic information. We used the bathroom before proceeding. Next, we were given horses based on height, weight, and experience. It was nice to see all the planning that goes behind the distribution of horses. They are really considerate towards the horses and make sure that the person and animal are a good fit. There were about 4 young people helping everyone onto the horses. I was originally given Godiva - like the chocolate - but later switched to Tonka - like the truck. We were split into two groups, mine led by Kiara. The experience truly does take the full 2 hours. It starts by going through a complex of very nice houses, then goes into a more woodsy environment, and then the beach. The beach was breathtaking. Our group stopped on the beach and Kiara offered to take group and solo pictures, and also made sure we were still comfortable on the horses and offered help if not. Sometimes, we'd get the horses to go fast on straight aways, and that brought me a lot of laughter and joy. My horse was a bit stubborn and did stop to eat multiple times. I was embarrassed that I could not control my horse, but the leaders were kind about it. The experience with taxes included was about $95 per person which I thought was fair and cheaper than some other ones around. I would highly recommend.
