This tour is definitely an adventure! An amazing one at that! There's so many components to this tour hiking, grappling, tubing, but nothing compares to the little things that weren't on the description when booking this tour. The views are spectacular and I have to say our tour guide Mariel was AMAZING. She made the tour so exciting for us and my two nieces. She went out of her way to show us things I KNOW she didn't have too but she did because she wanted us to have a great experience. I recommend this tour to anyone and everyone. Yes we do a lot of hiking so maybe not for everyone but if you want an adventure and see Puerto Rico trust me you will on this tour. Thank you to Mariel and the company for everything! Best day of our trip! The ONLY reason I would take out one star is because they have no clear directions to get to the tour on the website. We put the address in the GPS and it took us 20 mins away from the actual tour. We called them and the employee we talked too seemed really annoyed that we were lost and wasn't too helpful! I just wish he had more patience. Thank God we talked Spanish if not I don't see how we would've gotten there on time with the employees attitude. The tour was excellent. We explore new caves we have never seen in our stay in Puerto Rico. We also swan in the river and painted our faces with clay. This tour requires some conditioning as we walk down and up a mountain. Overall is was great, especially bathing in the river. read more

Professionally run, outstanding friendly and attentive customer service, with a keen attention for safety first. Our family did the Mukaro Cave Tour. Getting to the location was easy given their explicit and descriptive directions. Give yourself plenty of time. Lots of curvy country roads which take time. Their equipment is well maintained and their on site bathroom and changing rooms are very clean. Sturdy reliable water/hiking shoes are a must. The walking and hiking is extensive and oftentimes in uneven surfaces, slippery conditions and obviously on the riverbed. You'll want to be in good shape. We went in June and while we understood that river water is often cold, we actually found it quite refreshing. Our entire group of seven was led by BJ. The tubing was tranquil and well organized and we got up close to the rocks in the cave. The life jackets and helmets helped us along the way. Walking along the river and exploring the different caves and rock formations was really cool. The cave system is unique and we visited three distinct locations. From start to finish total tour was about 3 hours. Besides listening to the natural sounds of the river and the forest, we really enjoyed that it was a hiking adventure in which you started one way and came back through another - there was no back tracking. Bring snacks and water in your waterproof bag -- you'll really enjoy it half way through during a rest stop on the river. Great tour! We did option 2 with Homer as our guide. He was very attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. The hike can be slippery at times and has a few elevated slopes. Wear sturdy sneakers you don't mind getting wet and muddy. They will protect your feet against the rocks and provide better traction than water socks. The climb is not easy (but doable) but the views /experience are well worth it! Ps.. Their website says they are off Km 49.2. That's a typo, it's really km 42.9. read more

This is DEFINITELY one of the best things I did while in Puerto Rico! And I recommend this group particularly--we ran into another tour group coming the opposite way and their excursion looked like a death march as they went along. One even tried to join our posse! ;) For a mere $100 (our particular package) we had an all-day awesome trip through the jungle unlike anything I've ever experienced. We had a good # of friends so we were our own group. Omar was our tour guide, and he was fun, patient, and informative. You can tell he has a deep love for nature--really holistic-type of dude. Truly it felt like a bunch of friends getting together, one of whom just happened to know all the secrets of the nature. Gorgeous hiking, in and out of the river, some cliff-jumping into the river. (I carried a water-resistant backpack and if I could do it all over again, I would have left it in one of their lockers. I had to carry the bag over my head when we walked in chest-deep water.) One of the first things we did was rappelling down a cliff. I used to rappel when I was younger and these guys really know what they're doing. A few bounces down the cliff and then you're hanging free! It was awesome! We walked through bat caves, inner-tubed together through river caves, had a clay facial (yes, you heard me correctly) and played with water-repellent plant leaves that turned silver when they went underwater. I'm serious when I say that our time didn't feel guided at all, we were just a bunch of Dora the Explorers. After we were done, as part of our package, they provided us with a lovely lunch too. You should definitely do this so you can relive the day with your people. Wear good shoes that can get wet. I wore my trail running shoes and I felt secure on the mixed terrain and my toes were happy! Bring waterproof snacks and don't forget your GoPro! read more

Loved this tour of the beautiful Tanama river area, and this tour group had great service, prioritized safety, and was very accommodating of our group! Would definitely recommend and hope to return again next time. We did the Avatar tour, which involved 45' rappelling, a short hike to the river, river tubing through an amazing cave tunnel, and more hiking/swimming through the river and to the beautiful caves. Would definitely bring water shoes of some sort, as it involves lots of river crossings and getting wet! If you want a fun adventure that is also educational and of substance, this is a great locally owned company to tour with. On the way to the starting point of the hike, the ride took us around a residential property, some people in our group wondered out loud how often do they go grocery shopping, maybe go out once a month? They and we, learned it was an organic farm, operated a family for many years - no grocery shopping necessary! Ah, city folk (myself very much included)... At the end of our adventure we had the privilege to have a delicious traditional lunch at the farmer's home. Our guide Fernando was very knowledgeable and shared his personal connection to the land we were hiking/rapelling/cavetubing in. I think that definitely made the tour more substantial and inspiring. Amazing tour and guides! We did tour option #5. Everything on the tour was exciting and we felt safe- hiking, rappelling, cliff jumping, cave tubing, and more. Our guides shared their knowledge of the plants and animals we encountered. The sights and views are breathtaking, even the drive there is beautiful but windy. Be sure to call if you get lost. The meal at the end was delicious and satisfying. It is worth the price, and I highly recommend them! Tip: They respond better to phone reservations than email. Cueva del Arco is a must see. It was very beautiful. Cave tubing was relaxing while being informative. Free Jumps were fun to experience. Glad we wore tennis shoes for the hiking portion. When you ask friends, colleagues or even Puerto Ricans about the places to visit in Puerto Rico, the ones you get referred to are the Culebras, the bio bays and the Camuy Caves. But, I'm so glad that the caves were closed because we had to look for other options and we thought we'd try out the cave tubing at Tanama River Adventures. We ended up getting more than we asked for as we chose the Mukaro tour, which includes hiking, trekking, swimming, tubing, wading in water etc. Our guide Gaby was knowledgable, friendly and polite. It's an official adventure!! I can't believe my family just hiked mountains, spelunked, cliff jumped and repelled. Omar and BJ were such great tour guides. They kept my 60 yr old mom safe while climbing slippery paths. Our whole family had an experience of a lifetime. We did this on our 2nd last day in PR, and the AMAZING Customer Service from Fernando was a welcome change right off the bat. Communication: A+ , responded to Emails quickly, answered questions perfectly. Speaks English fluently, and has a great personality. I believe our other guide was Eduardo, who was equally informative regarding the geological formations, animals and local flora. We learned a lot, and I enjoyed seeing the more rural mountain homes and getting a chance to taste fresh oranges off the tree we passed. We did the Tubing / Caving / Hiking Option #3, and it was PERFECT. The Tubing in the caves was unique, and there was no fear or grossness that you MIGHT be concerned about before signing up. The water was chilly but completely doable. The Caves were interesting, we saw a creepy spider-like creature and bats, but still felt safe. Lots of fossils too. I Love hiking, and this was a mildly strenuous hike IMO. I could see it being challenging for those who are out of shape or have never walked 5 miles in a row. That being said, the guides will help you and support you getting through it. They have a real genuine connection to the nature around them, and make this small group excursion seem like an outing with friends. The scenery in the rainforest hike is unbelievable. I loved it, and the pace was perfect. Lunch afterwards was a treat (love local cuisine!) and they had a cute kitty on the premise that we got to play with as well. They even let my wife take a crystal home from their shop. Overall, I can't imagine a better Hiking Excursion. Be sure to add 15 minutes to the 'drive estimate' - the Route #111 Drive is Fun, twisty and cool to drive but slow ish at points. Bring Vibrams or Watershoes. You can in theory get by with just a water bottle and a 'pocket' of snacks, instead of a bookbag like we brought. read more

First off, thank you so much to Fernando and BJ and family for the amazing experience!! We met them just up the road, and followed them to park at their beautiful mountain farm. Here we got geared up and checked out the cows, chickens, pigs, peacocks, and all of the organic vegetables you could think of. They also have a clean bathroom facility right there for everyone to use also. As we set off down the road in their awesome gen1 Toyota 4runner, they apologized and let us know that the cave was partially blocked due to debris. They offered to do some rappelling before to make up for this. We loved this idea, and had a great time learning how to rappel on our way down to the river. None of us had ever done this before, so it was a great surprise! The trail can be a bit muddy and steep in parts, but Fernando and BJ were always right there to provide a hand to grab onto, and made the trek fun and educational. We were still able to make it about 90% of the way up into the cave, and back down. We were then able to jump off some rocks into the beautiful clear river. A quick 4x4 ride in their truck back up to the farm, where an authentic meal was just being pulled off of the wood fire. We requested a vegetarian meal due to some dietary requirements in our party. The food was AMAZING. Best meal of the vacation. They also had home made iced tea, which is better than anything I have ever tasted. Being welcomed into their home was unforgettable and we will cherish the memory forever. Next time we come to Puerto Rico, we are definitely going on another adventure with Tanama River Adventures!!! read more

I truly believe things happen for a reason. It rained a little bit for the first 2 days we got to Puerto Rico. I emailed Fernando to find out what happens if it rained the day of our tour but never heard back. We make our 1 hour 20 min drive from San Juan to Utuado. Arrived on time (8am) and waited for about 10 min in car since the doors weren't open yet. Someone approaches our car (Fernando) and tells us all of the tours were cancelled but I never received the messages. Good thing we drove that far because he was so kind enough to still take us cave tubing! We couldn't do the full experience but we were so excited and thankful! It was just me, my husband and Fernando the entire time going through the river and cave. SOOOO AMAZINGLY SERENE, PEACEFUL, QUIET AND BEAUTIFUL!!!!! A once in a lifetime experience. None of us had ever gone on such an adventure. We had a blast! the weather was perfect!!! Our guides Fernando & BJ were the best. After we were given equipment and a brief description of the area on a map, we took off on a short van ride to start hiking. Fernando pointed out plants along the way. We enjoyed watching some do the repelling, then we did the cave tubing (FUN), drank from spring waters, jumped off of mountains into river, got wet under waterfalls and hiked back up the mountain. Loved it!!! Fernando is passionate of his heritage and his island and it shows. It was great being one with nature. Would positively recommend them. Hint - river water is cold so wear a wet-suit if you get cold easily...like me. LOL read more

OMG! What fun this was. The tour guides Fernando and BJ are AWESOME! They are both friendly, fun and knowledgeable, we felt safe with them the entire time. We went tubing in the river and did some cave repelling. I have not done either and I will do both again in a heartbeat! The cave was amazing, we even experienced some bats, and did not get eaten up by mosquitos since these bats eat mosquitos, who knew! This was my absolute favorite part of our trip to Puerto Rico and was definitely due to the knowledge, passion, and professionalism of Fernando and the other guides on this tour. You could tell that they love the land and the history and culture of the Taino people. I even went and bought a book about the Taino people after visiting so that I could learn more about them. It is clean, comfortable, easy to find and full of knick knacks, relics and culturally significant items. A perfect setting to prepare you for your trek and to relax at after the adventure. The Adventure: From start to finish this was an absolute pleasure. We completed the most in-depth tour, Tour #5, and I cannot imagine anything coming close. It was breathtaking in both views (natural springs, caves, mountainsides) to take your breath away moments like the 250 foot repel or the 30 foot free dive. Words simply cannot do justice to this beautiful landscape and the magnificent ecosystem that opens itself up to willing eyes. Be bold, be brave and do Tour #5! From waterfalls to cave diving to clay mud baths to picking fresh fruit off the trees, it is majestic in every way. The Guides: I have saved the best for last. Our primary guide was Omar and he was AMAZING. He explains this epic journey in great detail and depth that is surprisingly refreshing. Moreover he joins in on the adventure whole heartedly and seems to really care about the great Puerto Rican territory. I felt that we truly connected with him and that in time, if I were to live in PR, he would be a good friend to have. His guide partner Fernando was only present for the repel, but was equally as charming and intelligent in our brief encounter with him. These two guys, an in particular Omar, made this experience a highlight of not just Puerto Rico, but my entire world travels. The end could not have been better as Omar sat with us over a Puerto Rican meal at a nearby restaurant in the mountainside. From start to finish, this was perfect. No complaints. Durng my last trip to Puerto Rico my family decided to do some adventuring. Tanama River Adventure came highly reviewed so we gave it a chance. It was a little hard to find, but once we did it was great. We had a few people in the crew that had some injuries or health issues that made the trek very hard and slow, but the staff was outright amazing! They helped us the whole way even making sure my mom had a steady food the entire way to the river. When we got to the end the guide showed us some natural clay rocks which they everyone proceeded to cover them selves in. the bat cave is truly beautiful and very peaceful. i would definitely come back. read more

This experience was amazing! Our guides Omar and Alex were very friendly and knowledgeable about the jungle we were exploring. They made us feel safe, as well as getting a little education throughout the 5 mile hike. We did the repelling, cave tubes and the $10 extra hike that was well worth the little bit of extra money. I went here with my cousin on April 3, 2016 . We chose option 3. This was one of my favorite things i did in Puerto Rico. I was staying in Rio Grande, we rented a car and drive 2hrs, but was completely worth it. The drive up there was beautiful . The repelling was fun . This was an amazing experience. We called the morning of the day we wanted to go and the staff was soooo. Nice, he offered us a 2pm slot and a $10 discount for our group of 5. There were very prompt when we got there and didn't make us wait around. The tubing was amazing. First i was skeptical when my friend booked it, I thought we'd just be floating down a river but it was so much more. We hiked, went through an amazing cave, swam, jumped of cliffs, explored caves, and drank water from a natural spring! The tour guide was so knowledgeable and friendly. We didn't get option 2 with lunch because I didn't wNt to spend an extra $20 for a sandwich, well I wish I did because it was so much more then a sandwich. We saw the group before us eating lunch and it was a ful course Puerto Rico meal! Get option #2!. There is a bathroom there when u first arrive. Def bring a change of clothes and a towel to have back in your car. You will get very very wet. I recommend wearing spandexy type clothes no cotton or jeans, we weren't very prepared. We had s great time! Edgardo was very knowledgable and passionate and did a great job as our guide. We had a small group of six and everyone had a fantastic time. Fernando and BJ were very friendly. I liked the fact that they place safety above everything. You must wear your helmet and life vest at all times. We hiked, repeled, jumped off a cliff into the water, and tubed in the caves.
