He put his whole heart into giving us the most personal and delightful experience we could possibly have - for a full 9 hours! My wife and I recently booked a Pearl Harbor tour with Polynesian Adventure Tours, and while there were definitely some positives, the overall experience left us feeling rushed and wanting more--especially given the cost. The Highlight -- Leo the Tour Guide The best part of the entire day was our driver and guide, Leo. He was kind, informative, and thoughtful from start to finish. You could tell he genuinely cared about the guests and took pride in sharing the history and making the ride enjoyable. He truly set the tone in a positive way, and he deserves recognition for that. The Biggest Issue -- Time (or lack of it) The main problem with this tour is simple: everything felt rushed. We arrived at Pearl Harbor National Memorial around 8:25 AM and immediately started moving. By 8:27, we were already trying to quickly go through the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park. We barely had time to walk the submarine itself and didn't have any time to explore the museum building before needing to head across the complex for our 9:15 AM call time for the USS Arizona Memorial. Even though we were on time, we were initially placed on standby. After realizing we might miss our 10:40 AM bus return, we had to speak up just to get onto the correct launch. Because of that, we missed the 20-minute documentary that plays before visiting the memorial--which is a pretty important part of the experience. The memorial itself was meaningful, but the visit is only about 15 minutes, which felt surprisingly short given the significance. Ford Island & Missouri -- Not Enough Time Next, we headed to Ford Island, where we had lunch and visited the aviation hangars. These exhibits were good, but again, time was limited. Guided tours weren't clearly explained, and it felt like if you joined one, you'd miss seeing other areas entirely. The biggest disappointment for me was the USS Missouri. This was the main attraction I had been looking forward to my entire life. I could have easily spent half a day exploring the ship--but instead, we were rushed through it. I didn't get to fully experience the areas I wanted, missed out on exhibits, and didn't even have time to properly explore or enjoy the ship at my own pace. On top of that: We weren't informed ahead of time that the front turrets were under restoration It started pouring rain toward the end of our visit, and we got soaked The rushed schedule meant we didn't even have time to browse shops or grab anything onboard It turned what should have been the highlight of the day into the biggest letdown. Suggested Improvement One major area for improvement: transportation logistics. There were multiple hotel drop-offs at the end of the day, which took about 1 hour and 40 minutes before we even reached our stop. When you factor in pickup time as well, that's easily 2.5-3 hours of the day spent just driving. If the company reduced the number of stops to 2-3 max, they could significantly cut down travel time and give guests more time at the actual sites, which is what everyone is really there for. Final Thoughts This tour has potential, and Leo was outstanding--but the overall structure made the experience feel rushed and, at times, stressful. If you: Want to take your time Are a history buff or military enthusiast Or want to fully experience each site ...I would honestly recommend visiting Pearl Harbor on your own. Don't bother with this group. We booked a tour with them to see Spouting Horn and the Waimea Canyon on Kauai via Disney Cruise Line (we were on the ship). Let me be clear, Disney was not responsible for anything that happened on this tour. First, the bus (think Greyhound sized) was 45 minute late arriving. Then, even though the tour had been advertised as "no wheelchairs or scooters," there were 2 on this tour, 1 of which was able to be folded up and stowed, but the other required the use of the lift, which the driver didn't know how to operate. Turns out they were short on drivers and flew her in from Oahu that morning... Once we were able to leave, we got to our first destination (Spouting Horn) after about 20-25 minutes. During this time, our driver ground gears, stopped suddenly and generally had issues driving the bus. We were then told that the brakes had failed (!!!!!) and that the company was sending another bus to replace ours. This took an hour. Several people (including the person in the powered chair) elected to bail and head back to the ship. Wish I'd known that was an option. We endured, and ended up finishing the tour 2 hours after our scheduled return time, but still in time to make all-aboard. The driver was just that - a driver. She was NOT a tour guide and didn't know much about the area, the stops or seem to be terribly concerned with the fact that we were on a schedule. Suffice to say that we checked with the excursion desk to make sure none of our other tours used this operator. Epilogue: Disney Cruise Line did their best to remedy the situation by refunding us half of the tour cost. We also recommended they reconsider this company for future bookings. read more

Today's golden circle tour with Mau was a huge disappointment. Usually the first row of a tour bus is reserved for handicapped seating or open to anyone once everyone has their seats. On Mau's bus both sides were unavailable to us. My husband and I were last to board the bus (but it was prior to the 8 am scheduled departure), I noted all "2 seaters" were taken (as far as I could see) so I started going into the first row and told my husband if someone boards that needs these seats we'll move. At this point Mau boarded and said simply "you can't sit here" with no explanation offered. At this point my husband walked all the way to the back and found 2 seats together, next to the toilet, where we spent the last 8 hours. I wouldn't mind normally, we were the last to board and had the first row been used by a fellow passenger that needed it I would not have had an issue but why does a tour guide need 4 seats? I counted 56 seats on the bus, there were 48 passengers so this left 8 available seats of which the tour guide was using 4. The other 4 seats were taken by people sitting by themselves. Although Mau was highly knowledgeable I was not impressed with how we were treated. As for the tour itself, if you are sitting on the right side you would see some nice things. We booked the Oahu to Hilo Helicopter and Volcano tour and had several major issues. We booked about a week or two in advance, and honestly for almost $4,000 for the trip I expected more. I had to call the day prior to the flight to get my flight information. They had not sent the confirmation email until I emailed them. Then when we went to the airport and we're already at the TSA check, we found out that they made a mistake in the last name of my adult daughter. My email confirmation has her name correct but the Hawaiian airlines ticket was not correct. We had to go back to the Hawaiian airlines ticket counter to fix it as it was 5 am and the call center at Polynesian adventures was not open until 8 am. It's unacceptable to make mistakes like that as airlines often charge a name change fee or require patrons to buy a whole new ticket when names do not match. Once we arrived finding the tour bus was easy and the tour guide was nice. I explained the situation and he told me that someone would call me. They never did. We had 2 sightseeing stops and no one contacted me. He had me call the 800# and explained the issue. The customer service desk said they would try to fix it and would calm me back. They called back to say they couldn't help me. This resulted in us having to go get the issue fixed again upon arrival at Hilo for our return trip. The guided tour and bus was good. It was informative and the sight were acceptable. The helicopter tour was the best part of the day. The Blue Helicopter tour folks were great. I would never do business with Polynesian Adventures. They made mistakes, couldn't fix them and then made it our problem to spend time to get it fixed. For $4K, it is not worth it. Find another tour company. read more

We did a day trip to Hilo from Oahu and everything was smooth sailing from start to finish. Communication was spot on from Polynesian Adventure having received emails, text messages and a personal phone call a day (or 2 I can't remember) prior to my booking. Due to that I felt very comfortable/confident and assured with my booking. As for the experience itself I felt that I lucked out in regards to my tour guides: Ethan from Blue Hawaiian Helicopters was superb-he was beyond entertaining, super funny/witty and very knowledgable about the terrain we flew over; Dexter was our land tour guide and driver. He is Hilo born and raised so I could tell that he was very proud and passionate in sharing his home with us. He took us on extra stops that weren't listed on the website's itinerary which made the trip feel even more personalized and unique. These extra stops were some of the parks close to the black sand beach and a tiny town called Honomu. Although the helicopter tour was rad, we didn't get to go over the Kilauea crater due to current weather conditions. I am just thrilled we got to fly as I know there are possibilities of not flying at all because of weather hazards. Unfortunately we also missed the eruption too by 1.5 days! UGH! But overall it was still a memorable and enjoyable experience. My favorite was Akaka Falls-the lush landscape totally made you feel like you're in another world. I HIGHLY recommend this tour if you're looking for a quick getaway or something additional to your Oahu vacation. For reference we did our excursion on 06.21.23. Looking at a previous recent review its unfortunate that that mistake happened to them however my experience with PA everything went exceptionally well. read more

Our bus driver was disparaging throughout and on top of that left us at Waimea Falls! Yes - we were 5 minutes late. BUT no protocol was followed. No call, no warning, just left! We called the company and he Came back to pick us up, claiming that he didn't "notice" we were not there!! Dude, We were sitting on the front seat on a mini bus - how can you not notice?? He was lying, because when we got back in the bus, HIS STUFF WAS ON OUR SEAT! Meanwhile, he waited 10 minutes at an earlier stop for another rider. I guess we were not white enough for him. This was a $400 tour and when we complained to the company, they offered us $25 in refunds. Talk about insult to injury! read more

This was pointless. I'm a local and I was entertaining a visitor to Hawaii who wanted to see Pearl Harbor. If we went to Pearl Harbor by ourselves, it may be hit-or-miss if we can get tickets because there would be so many visitors. My visitor is a VIP so I needed to be sure that everything would run smoothly and we'd be sure to get onto the memorial. Tour companies procure tickets early and then provide them to their paying customers (at a price, of course). Even though it cost me $200 plus fees per ticket with this company -- while going by ourselves to Pearl Harbor would have cost much less -- I just went with this tour company so I could at least be sure to get a ticket. The sticker price for the tour is $204, I bought two tickets, plus tax it should have been $425. For some reason they charged me $451. However, when we got there, the tour company accidentally gave us tickets for the wrong day. They were expired tickets. We couldn't use them. We had to stand in the stand by line for an hour to get in. I bought these tickets to avoid having to do that! We could have and should have just driven to Pearl Harbor and taken the regular tour like everybody else. It would have been cheaper and we would have arrived earlier so there wouldn't have been such a long wait. This company is an unnecessary and ridiculously expensive middle man. Its only value is that it supposedly makes getting in at a specified time a sure thing -- but even that didn't happen for us. read more

I was upset looking at my husband forced to sit on the front steps without a seatbelt. I was not happy considering the price you pay for this tour. Not very safe if you ask me. We had 3 tours on 3 islands with this company- all tours were excellent. Princess seems to contract with them, and I am so glad I had the chance to go on their tours. First, at Kona, we did a coffee store, the Place of Refuge and we would have done the painted church- but it was closed. Not the tour's fault it was closed, and we really loved the Place of Refuge- which is both beautiful and interesting. There is a lot to learn there. I feel very lucky to have visited. Second, the Pali lookout and Blowhole tour. A rather inexpensive tour, but the guide was lovely and the Pali lookout is quite amazing. Breathtaking. Our tour guide was a wealth if information. I learned so much. Her name means the little flower that grows in volcano. She described it as a little round flower. Third, the Road to Hana. Our guide's name (I hope I spell it right) was Kale- prounounced Kah Lei. He had the most beautiful tattoos on this arms and was much younger than most of our guides. He had so much information! I'd read several books on Hawaii (including Sarah Vowell's book- Unfamiliar Fishes- which attempts to deal with the colonization of Hawaii.) Even with a great deal of background I still learned a great deal from my guide and I was interested in learning. Keep in mind the drive is VERY long. The bathrooms may be "rough"- it's not the guide's fault, you get what you get since the Road to Hana is very rustic. You won't stop a lot- you can't- not and make it back!! We lined up on ship at 6:45 am for the tour and were back to the ship by 4:30. We drove all the way to Hana and ate boxed lunches at the black sand beach (really beautiful). Along the way we saw many changes in the ecology as there are many microclimate shifts along the way. Wonderful plant life- and many beautiful views. The road is scary- in many places it is one lane. Locals know how to drive it, but tourists do not. And I looked up the accident rate there AFTER my tour. Lots of accidents on this road- no surprise there. But it's a unique experience and I would not have missed it for anything. Also, we saw whales as we left Lahaina- which was very special! Polynesian tours certainly provides a good education to people who take their tours. I felt all my guides were able to educate me in their different ways about the islands I visited. Growing up on Oahu I only had one opportunity to visit Pearl Harbor in high school. Now that I was playing tourist with my BF I mentioned a tour and he agreed to booked it. I wasn't sure if the almost $60 would be worth it but Gar, who was our guide was amazing. Pretty standard in my opinion, we left Waikiki in a very clean bus and headed to Pearl Harbor. We were lucky that it wasn't too busy so we had lots of room and were very comfortable. Again, Gar was amazing and added a lot of his own personal touches and LOTS of interesting facts which made the tour come to life and made myself appreciate WWII vets and families even more so. here's what I wrote after the tour, sent it in on the survey: On August 9, 2023 (yesterday) was the worst day I have ever spent in Hawaii, all because I booked(the day before) the 7B- Grand circle island tour. I was charged $446.92 for my Wife and I with our 5 year old son, it wasted a whole day. I booked it at my hotel and paid a premium price because I trusted the Outrigger Reef resort on the beach where I've stayed 20+ times since 1985, traveling from California. I was assured by Miss Savanna that this tour was relaxing and not rushed, she lied, most of the stops were only long enough to use the restroom. Waimea was HORRIBLE, we took the shuttle to the falls and had to turn around and walk as fast as we could back to the bus to not miss it and we barely made it back, there is no way you would be able to swim there as promised by Miss Savanna (false advertising). The Temple stop was too short too and 2 ladies were left behind at the temple with their belongings on the bus, I wonder how they got back to Waikiki, who cares, right? The bus didn't drop us back off til a little after 6pm and we missed our prepaid happy hour at our hotel which ended at 6:30pm. The whole day was wasted riding on the bus. One stop my wife refused to get off the bus fearing we would miss it, I felt terrible because it was her first time to Hawaii and we wasted a whole day riding a bus. The city bus would have been more relaxing than that stress filled day rushing at every stop. The Dole plantation was a complete joke, no shopping there, no time if you stand in the line for the free sample of pineapple ice sherbet. We didn't get any because again we had to use the restroom and there was no time. The longest stay was in a small town, I asked the driver what we were doing here and he said eating and shopping, we had already ate the box lunch and the shopping was better in Waikiki so we sat in the parking lot watching chickens. I've been on island tours before and this one was just a hot sweaty bus ride, the driver kept tuning off the air conditioner because it was too loud to hear him when it was on. It wasn't the drivers fault it was a schedule he had to keep and it was a horrible experience and a wasted day in paradise. I wish to talk to somebody that cares because I'm getting irritated just writing this comment! I had booked 2 tours, today was the Arizona Memorial, we had a great time because it's hard for you to screw that one up. I'm definitely leaving reviews on Trip advisor, yelp etc. I am also warning anybody I talk to in the hotel til I leave, I don't want them to waste a precious day of their vacation sleeping on the bus for $450. Tell Miss Savanna too take the tour so she knows what she's talking about. I'm sorry for the up coming bad reviews I will publish when I return home, but I was lied too. This tour company is NCL's provider for the excursions offered through the cruise on Maui. We took two tours with them. I would rate the 'Best of Maui' tour 5 stars, mainly because of the wonderful tour guide and driver...cousin Henry. He was funny kept us moving and entertained on this half-day tour as we visited Iao Valley State Park (stunning scenery), Maui Tropical Plantation (touristy, but interesting tram ride around the crops) and Maui Ocean Center (great lunch and wonderful aquarium devoted to Hawaiian marine life) The other tour we took with this company was Haleakala Sunset. Haleakala itself is majestic, alien and the sunset above the clouds was beautiful. We appreciated being able to ride while someone else drove because the road is treacherous, especially in the dark on the way back down. The driver/tour guide however was a drill sergeant who seemed put out by having to deal with us tourists. She delivered her monologue on the flora and fauna of the park in an exasperated tone, punctuating each sentence with a deep sigh, with an occasional admonishment that we were not to touch anything once off the bus. Her sour attitude couldn't detract from the group's excitement at witnessing the sunset and it certainly made for lively dinner conversation once back on the ship. read more

My wife and I did the Haleakala sunrise tour on our second morning in Maui. The 2:50 AM pick-up was not an issue for us; but, for the one couple that showed up at 3:15 AM it apparently was. And, the constant prattling and complaining by the wife in that party was very distracting - we get it, you're NOT a morning person - please get over yourself. Nettie was our driver; and, she proved to be a charming tour guide (also a talented photographer!) I cannot remember what size the bus was; but, I think it was the 24-passenger version. We had reclining leather seats, which were quite comfortable. Nettie is very knowledgeable and explained what we were seeing and what we would be doing. She gave us tips for getting to the best viewing spots, which we followed precisely. We ended up right at the railing, with a few hundred people crammed behind us. I ended up taking more than 100 photos of the sunrise - it is quite spectacular. Nettie shared her stories about the natives and gods, as only a native can; and, I highly recommend the sunrise tour; and, the Polynesian Adventure Tours in particular. The continental breakfast on the way up was nice, with coffee, tea, and danish provided on board. Please be aware, it can be VERY cold at the summit - 30 degrees at the end of June when we were there. Bring extra layers and even ask housekeeping at your hotel for a few extra blankets to take with you; I wish we had! On our way up, our first stop was a convenience store for restrooms and a chance to purchase snacks & drinks. We did use the restrooms and hustled back on the bus to beat the other tours and cars going up the mountain. After the sunrise, our next stop was the visitor center for our final restroom break on our way down from the summit. We also made a stop at a lower elevated point to get some great views and shots before heading back down. Our final stop was at the Maui Lani Golf course for breakfast, where the service was excellent and the food on par with a Denny's. Overall, it was a good idea to do the tour rather than drive ourselves up BUT it was Nettie who made the tour great and it really showed how much she enjoyed her job and cared for her environment. read more

Yikes! We were walking on the sidewalk at the airport and the bus driver was unloading and blocking the entire walkway. Instead of apologizing he told us we should have gone inside. I had a full load of bags and my husband was carrying our toddler. Is that how you would treat your mother, your sister? The sense of entitlement was beyond inappropriate. If you are looking for a great experience while in Maui, PolyAd delivers. We did the early sunrise tour up Haleakala. Our tour guide was Nettie. She was prompt, direct, passionate, and informative. We were picked up at 2am outside our hotel. We were told it would be about 3 hours from that moment before we would be standing on Haleakala. Nettie made those 3 hours fly by. She made a pit stop halfway there at a local convenience store so we could get a snack or coffee. The tour provides coffee and pastries after the sunrise. As well as a hot breakfast soon after. While on our journey up the mountain, Nettie gave us so much information and motivation. It was very moving. I can fill this entire page up with great things to say. My advice to anyone reading this is definitely use these guys for your tours. I can honestly say I don't have one critique or bad thing to say. Just an all round great experience. Very easy to use. Then they told us to be back on the bus by 12:30 pm but changed the time to 1:00 pm without telling us...so overall we paid material money to waste over one half of our morning time unaccompanied, visiting Pearl Harbor, missing the Museum and other attractions. this tour was very disappointing. the driver added a stop at a macadamia farm then just decided to skip the historic Haleiwa town stop. we expected to have lunch in the town, while enjoying the north shore atmosphere. instead, we had to wait until after 3PM to eat at the dole plantation. the driver did not stop at hanauma bay at all. the blowhole stop was fine. there was not enough time at Waimea falls to swim. and in my opinion the driver absolutely wasted our day at the Hawaiian treasure store, the macadamia farm store and the dole plantation store. we drove past the ranch, but did not enter. this tour was the WORST I've experiencEd. beware. read more

My wife and I went on the Haleakalā Sunrise Tour with Nettie as our guide. Nettie was an excellent tour guide. If you can request her you should. The tour itself you can read the descriptions in other posts about the actual x's and o's of the trip up and down (all say the same thing and are accurate). The only thing I would say is that yes it's nice to be on the railing (we had spot on railing) but you can also stand on rocks 5 feet behind rail and get same view uninhibited so don't worry about having to be on the railing. Also, driving up the mountain is not as treacherous as people make it out to be, if you know how to drive...similar to road to Hana..it's just a bunch of turns it's not dangerous in any way though. Definitely recommend the tour bc very relaxing way to get the experience but you can save $100 if you plan ahead (3months out you'll need to reserve your parking at the summit) and know how to drive. read more

We were attending a Best Western convention at the Hawaiian Convention Center and the company booked the Polynesian Adventure busses to shuttle us from our hotels to the HCC. The drivers were very friendly and did their jobs outstandingly. The busses were where they were suppose to be when they were suppose to be there. read more

We booked a bus tour of Hilo that included air fare from Oahu. The tour was scheduled for 7:30am on Jan 25. We got up at 4am took a taxi to the airport to be ready to board at 5am. We couldn't get a boarding pass because the flight they arranged for us was for Feb 20. We took a taxi back to the hotel and contacted the tour desk. They basically said sorry we ruined your vacation but they were willing to forgive the $250 cancellation fee and give us a full refund less our $80 cab fee. We are heading home on Jan 29 missing out on seeing the volcano. This was a special trip celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary. read more

I am here in Maui on my honeymoon. I booked this tour weeks ago. I called yesterday at 7:15pm to confirm the tour since nobody had reached back out to me after providing my hotel information. The representative at dispatch had all of my information (which means that they they received my email with my hotel info). I was told to be at the hotel lobby at 2:30am (different than the 3:00am time printed on my ticket... thanks for letting me know about that before my phone call, Polynesian Adventure Tours). I repeated back to the representative "okay, so we will be at the hotel lobby at the circle by 2:30am. She told us, "that is correct." I then asked "out of curiosity, what time will we get back?" She told me "4:30am," which I know had to be incorrect. I write this review now as I sit back in my hotel room not on the tour because the representative gave me the wrong pickup information. Apparently there's is a different location that we should have been told to be waiting at. The driver called my HOTEL ROOM instead of my CELL PHONE, which is idiotic since we clearly wouldn't be in the hotel room if we are waiting for a tour elsewhere. The company has not been able to provide a resolution yet, but nobody should have to go through this... especially on your honeymoon. STAY AWAY!! read more

Great experience using PolyAd for a sunrise tour of Haleakala. Netty, a very tenured tour guide, picked us up at the meeting place designated by the person who confirmed our tour with us the previous day. Booking, confirming, and joining the tour was seamless for us, and we had 0 issues with our guide! She was punctual, informative, and as a native, she was very passionate about Hawaiian culture and sharing knowledge of the land and history with us. Before heading up to the top, Netty thoughtfully made a 10 minute stop at a Minit Mart for us to use the restroom and grab some snacks as we wouldn't be eating breakfast for another 6 hours, as well as some crystallized ginger in case we felt nauseous from the ride. The sunrise was beautiful. Netty prepared coffee and some tarts to warm us up when we returned to the van. She sang to us, shared some wisdom, and really made the tour a unique experience. I highly recommend using this company for touring Haleakala. Request for Netty as your guide and just show up to the designated meeting place on time to avoid issues that other Yelpers went through. It's simple. The sunrise doesn't wait for you, and there are a bunch of people who paid for the tour to see it - if you're late, that's on you, not PolyAd. The drivers are just trying to get everyone to the top in time to enjoy sunrise, so let them do their job according to the timeline and don't be sour because of your own lack of planning. read more

We used this tour company from https://www.hawaiidiscount.com/ to do the Pearl Harbor Arizona Memorial & Circle Island Tour for $86.00. It was about a 10 hour tour. Starting at Pearl Harbor with a boat ride near the USS Arizona...it is still being repaired so you couldn't go on it. After about 2 hours at Pearl Harbor, they'll take you at several point of interests on the tour(see the link). Ernie our driver was very personable...cracking dumb jokes along the way...but made it fun. The mini bus that we were on was very nice, clean and comfortable. This tour included the price of admission to Pearl Harbor & at Temple that we stopped at. It's worth the $86.00. You'll be picked up at your hotel or at another hotel that's really near at the one you're staying at. read more
