I have no problem with the food I actually like it sometimes it hit or miss been going here since 2006 but today I reached my final straw. I ordered a 2pc combo $9.50 that comes with a medium sized drink I ask to upgrade to a large I was charged $4 to upgrade when a large drink by itself cost $2.75 make it make sense. Total rip off and don't care to hide it I just hope those extra dollars was worth it because one thing I refuse to do is let you play in my face. Safe to say this is my last visit. read more

Great place. Very affordable and very delicious! The grilled chicken is very tender and juicy and well-seasoned. The combo comes with a drink and two sides. I only wished the sides were not as the "traditional" Mexican sides like refried beans and salsa. It would be great if they offered "frijoles charros" and a "Pico de Gallo" instead! This place is super divey, affordable and yes surprisingly good. It's not a 5 star meal but it is cheap and hot. A full meal of rotisserie sazon flavored chicken, rice, refried beans and a drink here costs less than $7!!! It was a little more blander than I would have liked but they have all the sauces and fixings at the garnish bar to liven up your meal. The clientele is mostly Hispanics which is always a good sign. Girl at the register was patient with us because I needed time to know what I wanted. However this place looks like a converted subway. Not good for large groups. Tiny booths so if you need space to breathe or are heavy set, this may be uncomfortable. They do however have a big screen TV that plays Latin American soaps. Hoover needs more places like this. How is there not a line outside the door of this place and wrapped around the building? They're roasting the chickens right in front of you. They've got pictures on the menu. You can eat real food here for less money than it costs to get fast food. People need to know these things. It's not fancy, and I don't think the menu was designed by some world famous chef. Price gone up a little recently, but very reasonable considering raw material cost went up recently with the pandemic. They are doing a good job with social distancing with every other table closed down and employees are masking. Employees are always nice and efficient! My friend stumbled upon this spot and I'm SO glad she did. We didn't expect much but we were absolutely stunned at the flavor and value that you get for your buck. This place is CHEAP and the portions are HUGE. I had the chicken plate with tortillas. It came with rice and beans also. There was so much chicken and it was seasoned so well. The rice and beans were a bit bland but the chicken made up for it. I made little tacos with all the ingredients. It came with salsa which was SPICY. There were lots of seeds in it. I also tried the guacamole which was chunky and fresh; I loved it. The tacos were phenomenal. I love the minimalism of Mexican street tacos. The flavor of the meat really shines through. I've drove by here several times and always wanted to stop by, so I finally did. They are known for their chicken, but they have a very large menu with different items. The chicken was seasoned and cooked to perfection, along with the rice and beans. Their red salsa is to be used on the chicken, however, it is very spicy. Also, I prefer green salsa but they only serve their house red salsa. The tacos and guac were also very good and tasteful. They have a wide variety of mexican sodas, the one pictured is grape flavored. It was actually very good and refreshing. Overall, the staff was very nice and respecful, and it did not take long to get our food. Due to COVID-19 you must wear a mask to come in. Dine in is available and some tables are closed off to enforce social distancing. read more

Used to be amazing food at incredible prices. The prices keep on rising. Now a burrito is 7 dollar's. It no better than one from a restaurant where for 7 I get a whole meal. Here, 7 is just that. A burritto. Nothing more. All of their prices have risen.. so much so they stopped putting them on the board with anything more than a piece of paper and the current price. Glad I found this place on Yelp. I went with the recommended Monthly Special #1. Chicken was fork tender and not too dry, seasoned very well. Corn tortillas were warm and fresh. Beans and rice were average. As other reviewers stated salsa bar could use some improvement/more selections. It has a basic medium salsa, salsa verde, slaw, lettuce and 2 types of onion. I can't get over the prices of this place. I got a chicken quesadilla, rice, beans, and a drink for $6 or so. My quesadilla was stuffed with meat as well. I thought I previously reviewed this joint but I guess not. It's my go to stop when on that part of Lorna. For $5.99 I always get the "Monthly Special #1" white meat which includes a bone in chicken breast (no wing), beans and rice, a grilled pepper (typically jalapeno but sometimes Serrano) and about 5 tortillas plus access to the condiment bar plus a fountain drink. I basically rip the meat and skin off and make tacos accompanied by the lightly cured curtido and some of the red sauce. This yellowish chicken is probably the best commercially prepared chicken I have ever eaten and really need to try this at home. Jay's picture really brings out how brightly colored the meat is after it is marinated and grilled. As far as the décor, it does not really figure into my review. It actually looks like it was an older Subway but there is a Subway next door, so maybe not. This is not four star dining but that is five star walking bird (yeah yeah, it's not turkey). read more

We found this place through Yelp and it did not disappoint. When we approached the place, it was as described. Not a posh place and very Spartan on the interior. The staff was pleasant and helpful. My wife got a taco salad and said it was great. The seasoned beef had a slight taste of chorizo seasoning and it made it different and good. my daughter got the quesadilla and she even enjoyed it and cleaned her plate. I was killing some time in Birmingham, just driving around when I saw this place. Back in Austin there are places like this all over. El Pollo Rico, El Pollo Regio, El Pollo Borracho. They're all very similar... a "different kind" of Mexican place, centered on delicious grilled chicken instead of the usual assortment of enchiladas y mas. They have flautas (crispy taco rolls which you might better know as taquitos), quesadillas, and a "papa lucas" which is a Mexican-style loaded baked potato, but their main feature, and what you must try, is the grilled chicken. When you order grilled chicken, it comes with sides and 5 corn tortillas, so you can pull the chicken off and make tacos with it. This is highly recommended. Take some chicken, some rice & beans, some salsa or veggies from the fixin's island, and you've got the grilled-chicken version of a fajita, for much less than most mexican restaurants. read more

I don't have anything bad to say about Pollo Lucas. The chicken (pollo) is good. The sides are meh... not fantastical, not trashy either. Standard rice and beans and such. Speedy service, the two times I've been. If you dine in, they also have a salad/salsa bar. I think this place is classified as Mexican food, but I don't really see it as such in my head. Perhaps because the chicken is grilled and served bone-in when most Mexican dish chicken I'm used to is shredded or cut up in some way. Not that it's a bad thing at all, because it isn't. The fam went for Saturday lunch and it was outstanding. The service was fast for a crowded lunch time. The food needed a moment to cool off before we could eat. I got the chicken roll up and it was very good. I had refried beans and potato salad for sides and again very solid choices. My wife is a picky eater and she got the quesadilla and loved it. Our son got the 4 piece chicken plate and he brought 2 pieces home. He is 20 and a hungry college student and couldn't eat it all. Next time my wife and I will split the 4 piece plate and the sides. I ordered the chicken wrap with fries. The food wasn't terrible, but it wasn't particularly flavorful either. I got two cups of salsa from the sides bar to assist and those too were lacking flavor. I went alone, but noticed there wasn't a lot of seating for many people. There was only one cashier who was helpful in a succinct, professional type of way.
