Delicious, well-seasoned chicken. Nice toothsome yucca fries too. Stick to these basics and you'll be happy. There's other stuff on the menu, but chicken and yucca is where it's at. This is juicier and more flavorful than American-style fried chicken, but they seem to cook to order (or at least not keep lots of pre-cooked chicken around like US-origin chains), so it can take a while. If you're dining in, you get a little number-placard so you can sit while you wait. Since the normal wait can be 15-20 minutes (based on two visits), consider ordering ahead online. Decent dining room at this location. The shopping center is a little rough around the edges, and parking is annoying (very little curb-side, have to deal with one of the two garages). But that's out of the restaurant's control. Expect a wait for the food, and remember it's not Kentucky-colonel style chicken, and you'll be happy. I love this place! Great food, great service and reasonable prices. This small chain started in Guatemala and worked their way up here, and I'm so glad they did. Their fried chicken is spot on, the fried chicken sandwich ought to be making Popeye's nervous, and they have a wide selection of sides to accompany the chicken ... I especially like the fried plantains. The only downside -- parking can be a bear, especially at lunchtime. But it's worth the hassle. Another plus -- the restaurant is spotless clean, the staff are all wearing masks and social distancing is in effect. read more

I had never been here before, but my family was invited to a fundraiser at this Pollo Campero, so we visited for the first time. It will probably be the last. We arrived about an hour before they closed, but you would have thought we had arrived two minutes before closing- we were told the chicken we wanted was sold out, and a lot of the side options were already gone. They even were out of some of the drink options. And we were told this about four minutes after arriving at the counter and waiting (the staff was in clean-up mode and didn't want to be bothered). Staff was not pleasant, even a little rude- I swear they were all trained NOT to smile. No "Can I help you?" or "Thank-You", just blank stares and unaccommodating service. The food was brought to us- the chicken was slightly warmed over, one of the sides was cold. I didn't have the time or heart to bring it back and ask for another warm-over- they probably would have burned it. Serious, that was the attitude. The chicken had a fatty texture to it, and being only slightly warm didn't help. The only redeeming value for this place were the sides (although one came back cool in temperature)- the coleslaw was decent, but nothing special; the yucca fries were good, better than most places (and they were warm!); the beans were tasty, but cool in temperature. When we finished, which was about 15 minutes to closing, they had already barricaded the dining area with those queue rope stands, as if it was their way to say "GET OUT!!". I had to forcibly move the end one so my 4 year-old daughter and wife could leave. I tried to make visual contact with what appeared to be the manager at the front counter, but he was too busy rolling his eyes because another customer had just come in. "Heaven forbid we need to deal with ANOTHER customer!" This place needs a serious makeover- leaner chicken that is hot when served, staff that are willing to cook more chicken when needed (and make more sides), and ensure all cooked sides are served at least warm. Also, closing time IS closing time, not an hour before closing time. And for their information, customers are what pay your salary, so try to smile once in a while and treat them with some respect. I was at home watching TV and saw this amazing promo 20 pieces for $25 it seemed great to me. My family and me went to get that promotion. When we walked into the store and was my time to order I ask for that promotion and they told me I couldn't get it because they did not have any small pieces (legs and wings) they said they only had big pieces (breast). Then they offered me a combo of 12 pieces for $35 which is 8 pieces less and $10 more. It does not even make sense but whatever, we pay for it and when we got home we realized it was mostly legs and wings. After we ate we realized there was even one piece missing. This is by far the worst experience I've ever had in a pollo campero. With out a doubt the chicken is good, however service is horrible, when it comes to the wait. I'm a doordasher and had to ask for the manager before about not having chicken ready at 5:00pm in the day. The same manager, Sonya or Sandra, is the manager on duty, new years eve Dec. 31, 2020. There is a line spanding around the corner and those first in line stated, they hadn't moved in 2 hours. The pick ups were being made by one person while this was going on, creating bad covid spacing outside the store. MD allows 7 in a store at a time for proper covid procedure. Pollo Campero is a Guatemalan staple that is everywhere like McDonald's but it is better. I'm glad to see they opened up a location in Hyattsville and assume the demographics played a role in their site selection. The store is in a building that opened recently with Safeway and MedStar as anchor locations. Pollo Campero is in a corner spot that faces East West Hwy. I've uploaded a number of photos to show what it looks like. Both the exterior and interior are done well. I had meant to snap shots of my food but, well, I was hungry and picture taking wasn't my first priority. The food was good. We got combos of 2 pieces + empanada with sides of plantains and yucca. Also used a Yelp check-in for another empanada (so we could try 2 types and a new dessert one). Everything was tasty. I was used to a little crispier fried chicken when I was in Guatemala but it was still good here. Had both the grilled and fried and preferred the grilled chicken because of its moistness. The Latin Buffalo and Peruvian Verde empanadas were equally appetizing. The dessert Dulce de Leche empanada was fine (the bread was more crepe than empanada for, perhaps, obvious reasons). The sides were tasty, as well. Although better than a soda, the horchata drink was a little watery but it's made in a huge batch so I guess I can't be too picky. My gripes are minor. The menu is a bit difficult to navigate because of it's organization, variety of colors, and too many words. I had an idea of what I wanted based on a sign that was outside. It wasn't easy to figure out where that was located on the menu above the registers. It took me a minute or two jost to orient myself and figure everything out. The "to go" menus are a little better done but are still rather busy. I imagine the menu's layout was a contributing factor to another commenter's complaint about the slow line. When we went in, only 1 register was open and it took us a little bit of time to figure out what we wanted (and this happened even though I'm pretty familiar with the brand from Guatemala). A small wait assembled behind us but nothing bad. I could see it could get worse at peak hours. The line backed up a little while we were eating and there seemed to be plenty of employees in the restaurant. Might be a good idea to train at least one or two as substitute cashiers. That minor gripe didn't detract for me. The good thing is that the lady who was up front on the register was absolutely awesome. She was very friendly and familiar with all their options and great at describing things. She even steered us toward what we'd want. We spoke in Spanish the whole time so that might have helped a little. I ordered on line but when I got there, the food was not ready. They ran out of the grilled chicken and I had to wait for quite a long time. I was just quietly waiting on the side. After a few minutes, the cashier gave me a cup to help myself to a drink. Wow, I was pleasantly surprised. When my order was finally filled, she gave me extra pieces of chicken and supersized one of my side orders. This is what customer service is about. It's sad I had discovered this place about 4 months ago and for the expensive price it is, for what you are getting; I liked their food so much that I budgeted just to be able to enjoy a meal there twice a month. I'm not a big fan of chicken, but my family likes this place. Their food takes a long time to prepare, even though they seem to have trays of chicken already prepared. Since I was in a hurry, my wife called the order in ahead of time. They did not begin to prepare our food until I arrived and paid.
