Poky Dot, Fairmont, WV, Dec, 2025. Of course, everyone goes to an ice cream shop in the dead of winter, right? We had just walked around Valley Falls Park (20 minutes away), and the West Virginians in our group told us that we HAD TO go to Poky Dot for lunch as our 18-month-old granddaughter would surely enjoy the atmosphere. Poky Dot is far more than an ice cream shop, though it's that as well. Our hungry group wanted lunch, and the 50s-style diner did not disappoint! Their food menu is extensive and includes breakfast items, all-day omelets and Benedicts, stacked breakfast sandwiches, munchies (wings, quesadillas, nachos, tater tots), salads, burgers, wraps, croissant sandwiches, hot dogs, big bites, super suppers, soups, and more. Surprisingly, given the diversity of options, four of the five adults in our group ordered burgers (or similar) -- (1) my choice was the Raspberry Kiss Burger ($12.99), which I split with my husband. (Our rating: 5/5). The burger was topped with Swiss cheese, bacon, spring mix, and an amazing raspberry chipotle sauce. I selected the Mac N Cheese as my side. The food was tasty and fresh, the burger was cooked as we like it done, and the quantity was generous. (2) my husband ordered the Cowboy Burger ($13.99), which we also split. (Our joint rating: 4/5). Per the menu, this burger features mushrooms, onions, BBQ sauce, and Swiss cheese -- and topped with a jumbo onion ring. For his side, my husband selected (more) onion rings. Unfortunately, they were out of onion rings, so his burger didn't have the onion ring and he substituted French fries for his side. Overall, the burger was tasty, fresh, and cooked well. However, both of us preferred the raspberry chipotle that was on my burger, and his burger was light on the mushrooms for our tastes. The fries were also weren't crisp. Burger #3 was an Original Poky ($10.99), served with lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles, served with French fries. (Rating: 4/5. The eater found it a bit dry without a sauce on it; fries also not crispy). #4 was the Giovanni ($12.99) from the Big Bites Menu. The Giovanni is half-a-pound of Angus beef, topped with American and provolone cheese and Oliverio peppers, and served on Texas Toast. All Big Bites are served with French fries. The eater rated this dish as 3.5/5, being disappointed that the toast was too small given the size of its meat and peppers topping. Finally, the 5th adult ordered the Chicken Alfredo ($14.99), their fresh grilled chicken served over spaghetti, with their homemade Alfredo sauce. She also got green beans for a side dish. (Not sure of the eater's rating). While the restaurant has a Kids Menu, we brought along cheese, fruit, and other snacks for the baby to happily munch on. Dessert. I'm not sure where to start about the desserts. To say that they're over-the-top is an understatement! Imagine that a single scoop of ice cream weighs one pound. Or that the menu offers a sundae that features 16 scoops of ice cream! We were all quite full but decided that we needed to share some type of dessert. The winner was the Cookie Shake ($14.99), served in a 32-ounce mason jar with your choice of vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry ice cream, topped with a Fudge Round, Nutter Butter, Nutty Buddy, chocolate chip cookie, crushed Oreo's, whipped cream, sprinkles, and a cherry on top. The adults in the group averaged to a 4/5 rating, with some feeling that the shake could've been thicker and/or had some cookie or candy add-ins. The toddler though rated it 10/5! The ambiance (5/5) is quirky and fun, with bright colors everywhere, fun booths to sit in, and fun wallpaper in the restaurant AND in the restrooms. It's worth a visit if only to see the atmosphere. Service (5/5). Our waitress was attentive and friendly, with exactly the personality needed for this environment. Parking was easy and free, just off Fairmont Avenue. All told, our overall rating is closer to 4.5, but I'm rounding it up to 5.0 because it was a fun experience, the food and milkshake were good, and the waitress was attentive. I wish that this restaurant were closer to home! read more

Please let the reopening date be true. I love the Pokey Dot!!! It's fun, delicious and adorable. Every worker was so helpful and kind. It's a must stop when I'm traveling through. We love you Pokey Dot!!!! read more

Crap place. Poor service . Mean management. Glad it shut down. Loved the ice cream and pies. But not worth the wait.

Amazing, I love you, please come back. Without you, I may never travel that way again.

It wasn't worth the price for a routine visit but it was decent and fun to see the decor

Stopped in for milk shakes and floats. What a cool place. They have some extremely different shakes and a 9 scoop banana split (too much for me.). The staff is very friendly . Prices were very reasonable compared to ice cream elsewhere. 50s decor. I'd definitely come again! read more

Outstanding experiences! I had not been to the Poky Dot in a million years. What a nice surprise to see how beautiful it is inside. So colorful and fun! We had 2 special occasions there. My stepfather's birthday in the dining room and my grandmother's memorial service in the private room. Both times we appreciated the service and the food. I had the hot turkey sandwich. Others had burgers, salads, and soup and everyone enjoyed their meal. We went for the giant banana split. It takes a while to wait for the banana split artists to craft the 9 pounds of ice cream but it was worth the wait. Big thank you to Meg for taking care of us on our special day. read more

First of all I've been waiting to go to this restaurant so, I was very excited that we stopped. I had been there several times prior but they'd always been closed! Today Tony and I decided to stop and get a hot dog, something that I love to try when I'm in New areas and was excited about trying here! The building is very colorful on the outside white with polka dots great signage very inviting to go into. Once you open the doors the wallpaper is amazing in the entry area it's like black with fried eggs all over it and then you go through a second doorway and you are in a very bright, vivid, and excitedly decorated room. Actually to the eye is exciting and entices you to want to eat there or be part of it. We were told we could set anywhere so we chose a seat near the counter in the far corner. On each table was very bright banana yellow cloth napkins and the tables were white there was a lot of neon pink everywhere and a funky robot man located near the front door. The waitress was very friendly came over to us immediately to get our drink order and I ordered a Coca-Cola. The whole place gave me the Bob of a 50s sock hop diner something off of Happy Days. The only thing missing was the waitress wearing like a bright pink uniform with a white apron and a little hat on her head, or even a hoop skirt and Bobby socks! Tony and I perused the menu and I could not find a hot dog anywhere on that menu so when she brought over my soda, I asked her if they served hot dogs and she said no I'm sorry we don't.. and this was a big letdown! Tony graciously offered to leave so we could go to another restaurant that would be serving the hot dogs that I was craving. I called the waitress back over to explain why we were leaving and to get a to-go cup and the bill for the soda but she said no there's no charge and said she understood. So she brought me a styrofoam cup for my drink and I left her a dollar tip for her 3 minutes of service. Once we got to the car, Tony voices concerns about the prices. He was very alarmed to see that a simple grilled cheese with fries was like $12. I hadn't really noticed the prices that much since I was mainly looking for the hot dog and couldn't find one. I may go back again to give him a chance with a burger and fries but I'm more of a hot dog gal! So my request to the owner or managers please put a hot dog on your menu, but I truly truly truly enjoyed your decor!! read more

Used to be a cute restaurant now it's expensive, dirty, and the service is hit or miss. Definitely overrated.

What the actual fuck is wrong with this place? We went to Pokey Dot for some goddamn milkshakes, and it was a fucking nightmare. The moment we walked in, we were hit with the stench of some shitty lemon cleaner that made our eyes water. It was like they were trying to mask the smell of their filthy floors, which were covered in god knows what. When we finally got our milkshakes, they tasted like ass. Literally, like someone took a dump in a blender and called it a milkshake. It was fucking disgusting. We were trying not to vomit from the taste of those shitty milkshakes. Pokey Dot is a fucking disgrace. The floors are dirty, the air smells like shit, and the milkshakes are fucking awful. Avoid this place like the plague unless you want to ruin your fucking day. We'll never be back, and neither should you. Save yourselves the trouble and the potential stomach ache! read more

A friend and I were in town for a sporting event. Our hotel website mentioned this place so we tried it. The atmosphere and decor are phenomenal! Bright, colorful...just makes you feel happy! Well, the only positive I can say is the waitress was polite. I haven't been here in about 5 years and decided to head on down. First appearance, is the decline in the outside appearance. Inside was better but the back area had a usual smell (reminded me of mold). We ordered western omelet and a meat lovers. The positive it came out hot. The potatoes were black and tasteless and the toast was hard and didn't even melt the butter. Only 1 other customer other than us. I couldn't finish the food and was EXTREMELY disappointed. So SAD! read more

Talk about great food and great service !! We had a great selection of food. Our group shared the Kitchen Sink Wrap , a wrap with fried chicken tenders and everything you can imagine served with Ranch Dressing and a side of fries. Also at our table was the Mac & Cheese Burger with onion rings. Hand made burger cooked to perfection. Almost (but not quite) to big to bite. And a chili hotdog, great flavor and plenty of dog. Dessert was milkshakes all around, strawberry and a chocolate, sharing is suggested ! Served on a platter with cool whip and spinkles. Hand dipped icecream, with fresh milk and so good!! SHARING IS SUGGESTED. And plan to go back when possible, you will not be disappointed! The decor is adorable!! Love the bright colors too! read more

We were visiting Morgantown and decided since we were so close this was the time to venture down. It was in between breakfast/lunch time so we could eat either, in luck they serve both all day. This is so kitschy and cute. it is all the fun colors & decor, just missing some music. Unfortunately they were not accepting credit cards but they did accept paypal and things like that. The menu was overwhelming so we chose breakfast which was a ton of food. It was actually the fluffiest and best omelet I have ever had. It was full of mac n cheese, bacon and cheese and I added mushrooms. My husband got an italian sausage sandwich on grilled sourdough. I wish we had room for one of the ginormous shakes. I did ask for some cake but they were sold out, Mondays are hard because they get slammed over the weekend. I would go back if in the area. read more

I was super excited to come here and try out their food/ice cream but I was sorely disappointed. The diner looks so fun and colorful from the outside, definitely an eye-catching aesthetic. Initially, I had planned to try out their ice cream but we came hungry and my friend who lives down the road advised us their food was pretty good too. Man, was she wrong lol. I was surprised at the diversity of items on the menu and my eyes lit up when I saw they had a pot roast. I worked myself up into excitement for that juicy roast. Now, in all my years of eating pot roast, I don't think I've ever had one this bad. The roast arrived lukewarm with the beef dry as a bone, about one dollop of gravy on top, barely any carrots, and the beef was laid on a bed of dry mashed potatoes. It also came with onions on it, which is not normally a part of that dish. I was so disappointed. We came about 2 hours before closing, so maybe that had something to do with the poor quality, however, if you're going to have certain items on the menu, you need to at least make it well or don't make it at all. Our waitress was very nice, which made me feel bad for having to send the food back, but it just was not edible. She kindly offered to take it back and bring me something else so I opted for the nachoes--which weren't much better but at least were more edible than the pot roast. This place is probably known for their ice cream, which, unfortunately, we didn't get to try due to only being in town one day, but maybe I'll have to come by and try the ice cream and hopefully, that will be better I hope, if I ever get the chance to come back. read more

This kinda a throwback to the 50s with a modern twist on food. Diner isn't big but several tables and booths are available. Came near closing time and the place has such a cool vibe and I can see why many come here. Ice cream is 3 flavors vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. The dessert menu is big with ALL the sweets. Never tried the food only ice cream and service was very friendly. Now they ain't cheap but the don't skimp either. Orange float, Reese milkshake concoction and peanut butter pie was amazing. read more

This is not a great restaurant.. the vibe is fun but that doesn't make it clean, it wasn't necessarily dirty but I just didn't feel relaxed enough to get comfortable there, the fries that were done were great but around half of them weren't fully cooked and we didn't get to enjoy them at all. the service was very friendly and we enjoyed chatting with the waitress, but the "credit cards being down" seems to be something that's been going on for a while from what we could tell which just felt kind of unprofessional. I didn't hate my experience here but I would probably never come back unfortunately. read more

I wanted to like the Poky Dot - I really did. It was super cute from the outside and it reminded me of an Oldies Diner feel. The owner was there at the time as well. We arrived near closing and they were super nice to take us in and serve us ice cream. They sell food but I did not buy that so I will speak to the ice cream. The ice cream is not gelato or anything fancy; it is ice cream as you'd see from maybe Blue Bunny. In fact, it was the Blue Bunny brand I think it was that they started dipping out of - not a tub of hand scooped ice cream. That I think was my biggest drawback and for some people that would be a no-go, so it is a big problem on the Quality scale. The service was great. The ambiance was fine. And the style of the ice cream was super cute for kids and some adults. But if you really want to win the adults you need to provide better quality ice cream. Our experience was average over all. read more

Poky Dot is a place full of many quirks and features. The entrance suggests that you're walking into an alternate timeline as the diner decor puts a modern twist on the good ole' days. I felt like I died and went to Almost Heaven after eating their ice cream and cheesecake. My Sriracha Burger, priced at $12.99, was a bit underwhelming for what I paid, and the french fries had me thinking they were neglected for at least 15 minutes after departing the fryer. My buddy Pasi wasn't too impressed by his burger either -- not to mention they were out of almost everything. The service wasn't necessarily bad, but it was rather outlandish. I'm not sure what the Poky Dot manager has against people native to the Keystone State, but she gave us some nonverbal sass after she found out. That really poked my dot. read more

We drove over an hour just to come here and it was well worth it! It's a true experience as soon as you walk in the door of the restaurant. It's decorated with fun things throughout the place inside and out. Whenever we arrived we had a bit of a wait, but the owner was nice enough to come to our table and explain that they had call offs that day and were a bit understaffed. She was very kind and told us a little bit about her place. I really appreciated her hospitality. We all started out with fresh squeezed lemonade that was to die for. Best lemonade I've had hands down. We also went for the nachos to share and they were very good as well. For my entree I went with the hot turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy. It tasted good and really hit the spot. My boyfriend went with the western omelette with hash browns and he enjoyed every last bite. I had to try one of the notorious milkshakes so I went for the Reese's Me. It was fabulous! I've never seen a milkshake quite like it before. It went above and beyond my imagination. Their dessert menu is insane here! They will literally serve you a 9 pound banana split if you shall choose. We had a great experience here and are already planning our next trip! read more

Stopped at the Poky Dot on the way to Kentucky from DC. We love local color and local eateries. It was so much fun. Should be called the Poky Don't. My review has to be at least 85 characters so here are the rest of them.

The temperature of the restaurant is cold and they still cannot take credit cards. Tried the Polky Dot for breakfast. The waitress was nice and since there was only one other table eating at the time, she was attentive. The food was not good. The potatoes served with my omelette were so salty and peppery they were not edible. The waitress offered Tator Tots instead but they tasted like old grease. My husband was sick the rest of the day after eating his breakfast. We had burgers there one time before and they were good but after this experience we won't return. read more

Ate here once before, not long after it reopened from the fire. It was clean and fun and we enjoyed breakfast. I was excited to bring my boyfriend, as we enjoy diners. I don't think they cleaned since I was last here. The menus are dirty and falling apart, the employees were friendly, but dirty. Gnats filled the bathroom and flew at us while we ate. We were going to get dessert, but couldn't wait to get out of there. Food was just so-so. This place seems like it was a lot of fun and a hopping place at one time. It's in desperate need of some love. read more

Very dirty on the inside. The smell between the two rooms was horrible. Our table was so loose , we had to hold it up white eating.

Loved it! Not only was the ice cream delicious but the price was good as well. I got the three scoop sundae and it was $10.99 and each scoop was measured and weighed at a pound a piece plus your toppings. They also are a beautiful retro diner with amazing color schemes going throughout the experience. Definitely worth the stop. read more

The 2.9 makes sense now. Even the fast food chains have a higher ratings. My family has seen the posts and the hype over the over the top desserts. So this year my daughter and her twin 7 year old daughters who share a birthdate just one day apart, decided they wanted to go. They spent time looking at pictures and choosing what they NEEDED to have. Some family and friends joined us on Wednesday to celebrate. We checked to be sure we knew the hours and would arrive in plenty of time. The family saw a post on social media that day and almost everyone was excited. We drove an hour and a half to Fairmont. Some friends drove over two hours. We arrived just after 6pm and saw a sign out saying the deck was open. Then we noticed the place was dark and the doors locked. No signs posted, nothing on social media or google to suggest they would not be open. What a huge disappointment! I'm sure there's a 1000 reasons they could be closed but is completely irresponsible and poor business. To market yourself widely on social media and not respect your potential clientele enough to also communicate well the well published hours would different. Was no great loss to me personally as there's a great Italian place just down the road. But the kids that were there for their ice cream treats made it very frustrating. 100% would not recommend waisting the time. read more

Double cheeseburger salad was like a BLT in a bowl with a Slider garnish. Very good. Decadent ice cream, milk shakes and sundaes on the menu. Great chicken and waffles, good friendly service, and a fun, clean atmosphere. Good spot for some good food.

I'm not sure why this place gets all the hype. We went on a Sunday mid afternoon. You walk in and the whole place stares at you including the workers, because there is no waiting room you walk right into the dining room. After a few minutes, one of the workers asked how many and said he needed to clean some tables 1st. then I'm guessing the owner shouts from behind the Grill "what's the group waiting on?" after about eight minutes we were seated, but then after waiting over 15 minutes, my husband had to flag down a waitress who said she didn't know who our server was but she would take our order. We ordered drinks and food and ice cream because we had plenty of time to look at the menu. And they recycle the paper menus. One of ours had gobs of food on it. About 10 minutes later our drinks come, another 10 min the kids meal and a few minutes later, one of the adults meals and then the side of fries others were waiting on. Whatever happened to serving all the food at one time? Then is the issue with the milkshakes and ice cream they took over 45 minutes to get there. And they came one at a time not all at once. I don't understand why they all don't come at once. The milkshakes were melting but tasty, and very over priced for a few extra things they add on. them. The food was nothing great. I give it a five, and also over priced. Oh and each item was brought by different server. All in all, very slow service. Over priced and the food is just Soso. read more
