Not sure what beans they use - seems on the lighter side, which is what I was wanting so got lucky on that. The barista remembered I ordered soy and came up to me later, offering me an extra soy hot chocolate that wasn't picked up or something. That was nice. Nice staff members. Came here for a hot cocoa and it was amazing! It was super creamy and thick which I love, and was not overly sweet. The latte art was nice too, and the place has a nice, slightly upscale vibe. I liked my matcha a lot more than I expected to. It was very much a traditional matcha and not the oversweetened or pre-packaged stuff that some cafes seem to do now. The barista was super friendly and helpful too - they were very knowledgeable about the matcha and other drinks I asked about when deciding on a beverage. They were also very efficient and did a cute little latte art for me. The ambiance was casual and modern. I frequented Poindexter Coffee during my six days in Seattle to officiate my goddaughter's wedding and have a short vacation. Located on the first floor of Graduate Hotel, a 16-story art deco hotel in the University District, Poindexter does a fairly steady business primarily due to its relationship with Graduate and because of being near the University of Washington. You can access Poindexter from inside the hotel IF you can walk down a step that connects the coffeeshop with the hotel (right next to the front desk). Otherwise, you'll need to use the sidewalk entrance off of Brooklyn Avenue. It is accessible and level to the ground (or as level as anything gets in Seattle). Poindexter has a fairly small menu primarily consisting of coffee and tea options, a variety of pastries, and a breakfast menu primarily consisting of breakfast sandwiches and a handful of other items. They were offering dine-in with well-spaced tables. It's my understanding they typically offer a couple of video games, though I never saw them and they may have been set aside due to the pandemic. I actually never tried the coffee (which I've heard mixed things about). It's Verve Coffee. I drank iced tea each morning. I tried a sausage/egg/cheese sandwich - it's a behemoth and beautifully executed. It's easily one of the best that I've tried of this type of sandwich. I also tried a couple of their pastries including delicious hazelnut brownies and a couple others. Every employee I met was friendly and helpful. The space is warm and inviting. The hotel is dog friendly and it's not uncommon to see dogs inside the Poindexter. Seattle is pretty eco-friendly in general and nearly everything here is recyclable, compostable, or otherwise good for the environment. I appreciated balance, however. As a spastic paraplegic, I typically do use a straw and appreciate having an option here while also recognizing some shy away from straws due to their impact on the environment. The prices are typical "hotel" prices - this means they're a bit higher than you'll pay most places but not exorbitant. I will note that they don't accept cash - only credit cards. The hotel does have a deal where you can get credits that can be used at the Poindexter. This is one of two dining options connected to the hotel with the other being a rooftop restaurant. Graduate has a study table at the back of its large lobby area - it offers connectivity and plug-in and Poindexter offers some discount options for those studying. As a matter of note, this area is undergoing major renovation and construction and the sidewalk has lots of signage reflecting the street and construction work. Additionally, parking is somewhat limited so this truly is more of a neighborhood coffee joint than a destination spot. However, between the hospitality and the quality food/drink items it's definitely a great option for those in the area. From past photos, I'll also note that the decor is typically somewhat different. They've adapted spacing for the pandemic and it is still aesthetically pleasing but not quite as hipster. They also do offer a variety of bottled and canned items ranging from water to beer to wine to wellness drinks. If/when I'm back in Seattle, I wouldn't hesitate to revisit Poindexter. read more

Finally checked this. cute coffee shop out before heading to UW Farmer's Market yesterday. On my first visit to a coffee shop I usually go with a latte to see how the latte art is but the Golden Milk was calling my name that morning. I love that they had a few other tea lattes. The space is cute lots of window and natural light on the south side. Plenty of tables for varied size parties. The main counter is so cool with all the wood pencils. Loved the surprise logo at the bottom of the mug when I finished my beverage. Service was friendly and I received my beverage l, but pretty sure they forgot about my smashedbrowns. I was facing the main counter from my table thought it had taken awhile but being my first time wasn't sure how long it should take. But then saw one of the people behind the counter asking if my order was ever done. No apology for the delay but it was so tasty O couldn't be mad. Tater tots in a waffle iron why has no one else done this? it's nice a crisply all the way around like a gigantic McDonald's hash row. Note that this is a limited review based on my experience! I always order a Chai latte at coffee shops to see how it might taste like - I'm not much of a coffee drinker myself. I know, in Seattle? The blasphemy! The decor is beautiful and homey, with good music. When I came in, it felt like it had a nice vintage feel. Wine bottles adorn the right shelf, with an airport cooler holding various items. 1 star for that! Approaching the counter, the nice girl working informed me their oven is broken, so they won't have any food, and it's been broken for about 3 weeks. Super unfortunate, as I have heard good things about the food here, so I'll have to wait until it's fixed to really try it. She was still very kind, if not a little clumsy (she accidentally knocked over some paper cups while working by herself, which is completely fine). I tried to catch the stack of cups to no avail, but I did help a little in settling everything down. If anything, her flustered response was endearing, rather than unprofessional. Good service means 1 more star! Now, for the Chai itself. It looked cute, with the typical latte heart in the center, and served in a paper cup (I accept this due to the pandemic). However, as is the case with many coffee shops, it tasted watered down and not quite creamy enough for me, which was very unfortunate. This is usually a result of the Chai not being steeped long enough, and perhaps an off ratio with water VS steamed milk (this also depends on the type of Chai used). Still, it gets 1 star for presentation! All in all, I know that next time, I'll try to ask for a longer steep time, or to use less water and more milk, and see if that changes. After all, this is just my opinion - a Chai latte can come in many different forms and it boils down to preference! The Poindexter is the Graduate Hotel's resident coffee shop/cafe, and carries over its cool and funky school/after school-themed aesthetic, with some walls surfaced completely in real pencils and arcade games stationed in another area of the space. I'm not a coffee drinker, but I thoroughly enjoyed their steel cut oats for breakfast, cooked up with soy milk and topped with fresh, sweet strawberries and pecans. There was a minor wait to place the order at the counter, but the oats were served up quickly and in a generous quantity, fueling me handily until lunch. There are many advantages to staying at the Graduate, and the Poindexter is another feather in their cap. They also have a refrigerated case with drinks and some prepared foods (yogurts, sandwiches, salads) if you need something on the run. read more

Delicious because I had two perfectly crafted, consistent tasting iced vanilla oat lattes (both vanilla and oat cost extra) and got their bacon breakfast sandwich open faced (didn't need the other thick piece of toast) and that bacon will make you recoil a little from the shock of how good it is...thick, flavorful, and juicy. The cheese is also what makes the dish. And friendly because the morning duo of peppy and sassy and chill and accommodating greeted me warmly and were super engaging two days in row! I had a perfect cappuccino here during my visit to Seattle. The coffee was out-of-this-world delicious. The barista was very nice and took time to be kind and to do it right. The problem was that the barista was working alone. The line was super-long to order and each order was complicated. The barista is clearly overworked, having to pick up the baked goods and set up the shop alone. This meant the shop opened late. Add some staff here, people! read more

We stayed in the Graduate and so enjoyed coffee and breakfast pasties (well, my partner did. No GF options for me). Everyone there has been so friendly, and they make the drinks quickly and efficiently, even when there is a long line. I loved my soy dirty chai with a shot of white chocolate, though the hibiscus tea was a smidgen too sour for me. Partner loves the lavender latte and I don't even drink coffee and enjoyed tasting it. Rating : 3.5 stars I was staying at the Graduate hotel for 3 days and this place was the in-house coffee place attached to the hotel. I got breakfast coupons for 10$ from the hotel for my stay so I was pretty excited to use it at Poindexter. I was greeted (or not) by a not so enthusiastic barista who had an annoyed expression on their face. I ordered a mountain bacon sandwich and a side of black coffee. The barista didn't acknowledge and I wasn't sure if they heard me. I proceeded to give them my coupon and they looked at it as though it was something suspicious. They had a discussion with someone who I assume was the manager about the coupon. When I asked if everything was ok, they told with in an irritated way that it was fine. Somehow I left with a feeling of being unwelcome which isn't the best way to start the day. If I didn't have the coupons from Graduate, I may not have returned again the next day. Lucky for me, the sandwich and coffee were both delicious. And it made up for the bad start I'd ordered a black coffee and they used a local coffee brand who made some really tasty blends. The mountain bacon sandwich had a huge slab of bacon, scrambled egg, Beechers cheese on a thick toast. It was delicious and filling. Over the next two days, I tried to time my order or avoid the annoyed barista so as not to spoil my day. I tried the breakfast sausage sandwich on the other day. It came with Tillamook cheese, thick sausage and egg on a toast. I liked it better than the bacon sandwich. Don't get me wrong, they were both delicious. I just prefer their sausage over bacon. They also have croissants if you're in a hurry. If you order coffee, you're given a nice cup with the coffee shops name on it if you're staying in for the drink. They have a few arcade game consoles for you to play and free WiFi if you want to work or browse internet. If only they'd have a little more welcoming baristas, this would be a 5 star place. read more

Admittedly one of the most disappointing breakfast sandwiches I've ever had. Bacon was fatty and inedible - leaving just a small sliver of egg on a very boring sandwich. The coffee is nearly as sad, with the Cherry Blossom latte matching the flavor profile of a bottle of Pine-Sol.
