My family has stayed at the Pleasant View Inn for 10 years, its on a gorgeous piece of property and one of the nicer beachfront hotels in Westerly. Occasional annoyances (flies in restaurant, room not clean), but our last visit was a serious safety issue that did not seem to concern management. The customer service and manager's response to the incident was disgraceful.
We invited the neighbors children to come with us to Rhode Island. Before we headed home, we hit the beach and used the showers downstairs near the pool. Here is a condensed version of my email to the hotel manager, Allison.
Burn from Water Temperature in Shower, Faucet Valves Failed to Shut Off
On Monday August 3, 2015 at 10:45 we checked out. At 11:30 am, my family used the changing room area near the pool, to change and rinse off from the beach before our ride home.
My sons friend, age 11, was burned using the shower in the downstairs changing area. He used the 2nd shower in from the left (next to the sink). He couldn't shut off the water fast enough, and fell to the ground trying to get out so fast while the water continued to run. I grabbed a towel and looked on his arm and shoulder where he had the most pain, and it was extremely red. The room steamed up so fast and I could feel the heat in the room from the hot water in the shower. I tried to turn the shower off, the left knob (hot water faucet) kept spinning and spinning in circles. It would not shut off. The cold water on the right hand side did shut off. These were old style faucet handles, with no temperature safety control set because this water was scalding hot (like opening an oven and hot air blow in your face. My husband shut the water off by turning and pulling to get it to catch. The gentleman in the first stall heard and said his shower was extremely hot too, but he was able to quickly adjust it,and he thought the hot and cold valves were reversed too. My neighbors son was hysterical and crying in pain and we wet towels in cold water to ease the burning pain
At that point, we didn't bother to shower and wanted to leave. As I went to the front desk to file a complaint, but the neighbors son wanted me to stay with him and the kids. My husband spoke with the front desk and asked if he wanted to see a doctor or keep them informed on how he was. The drive home we kept cold compresses on for pain. When home, his mother decided to wait and see how everything looked before seeing the doctor. When I told my mother (who paid as a gift), she immediately called the Pleasant View Inn at 7:00 pm to speak with a manager, but there was NO manager on duty and NO manager available to contact on call (what if there is an emergency?), and she left a voicemail. The next day, the Pleasant View lost power due to a storm (no generator even after Hurricane Sandy?) but we finally spoke to her and said she would look at the showers with the maintenance person and get back to us.
The Health Dept of RI, who referred me to David at the Town of Westerly, RI Building Office and I explained the situation asked what the water temperature code is (many hotels have state code set to 120 degrees max) and if there is a code for actual shower faucets (since the one that failed was clearly very old). He said the Pleasant View just has a big renovation after Hurricane Sandy, and a faucet should not be a big expense. David said to call him back and let him know how I make out and he can look into it. With no response from Allison all day, we made 8 attempts calling the front desk and finally reached her. She advised me that Pleasant View water temp is a normal temp range set between 140 deg - 150 deg and advised us that they installed a new shower faucet that will mix hot and cold to prevent scalding anyone in the future, and said the best she can do is refund 50%. She never even inquired to see how the boy's burn is doing.
This was a major hotel oversight that could have caused much more damage to a disabled, handicapped, elderly or small child. I do not think her offer of 50% refund is reasonable with the seriousness of this matter. We have been long time customers through the years and surprised that the Pleasant View in was not more accommodating or cared enough to inquire about the injury. read more
