I came here on a Saturday night and there was no wait. After being seated they came out with chips and salsa, you had to ask for white sauce separate which was good. The chips were very crispy and fresh. For the main I got a burrito San Jose ($17) and it came with chicken and chorizo inside a burrito with rice , beans, and cheese dip. It came out a robot which gave me a hilarious laugh. The burrito was a good portion and tasted pretty solid (quite salty but good). Staff were friendly and the overall experience was good. We were in town for a volleyball tournament and wanted a place to the athletes and parents to gather for a dinner. Plaza Azteca was very accommodating for our group of 22 people. As always, Plaza Azteca knows how to make a banging margarita. This was the perfect spot for me and a friend to let out hair down, chat over some good food and sip on a margarita. Today, I had the mango frozen margarita. I noticed the guy didn't ask if I wanted sugar or salt on the r8m, they normally ask, but he didn't and I was actually fine with that. My food was pretty good, I asked for a la carte quesadilla, and rice and beans. All three things were a la cart, I wish the quesadilla was a bit larger, but it taste good either way. Immediately taken in by the impressive veganized versions of familiar traditional Mexican dishes, like quesadillas, tacos, enchiladas, etc. and I was very happy to see the nondairy cheese they use is Follow Your Heart "vegan gourmet" (the OG vegan cheese, still my favorite) . Our waiter, Jorge, was very patient w our children as they customized their [IMO surprisingly obnoxious] orders. To be fair, they were out of soy meats the night we dined so adjustments to menu were required. The food was exactly to order and quite delicious. Interior design is SO creative and delightful (see pics) ... it was kind of like sitting in the Courtyard of some charming Mexican Village, only completely indoors. I ordered the shrimp and crab chimichangas, which is my go to at any Mexican restaurant since I am a pescatarian, however this by far was the worst! Wow! The portions at Plaza Azteca are no joke! To start we were met with great customer service from our waiter, in a fancier than usual outfit, bringing out a hot batch of classic crispy Mexican chips which were salted nicely. The vibe of the restaurant was pretty cool and the seating was comfortable in our booth. The white sauce is pretty spicy compared to other restaurants but not super spicy to the point where it is unenjoyable. The salsa was mediocre at best but I'm not a big salsa guy to start. The queso was absolutely excellent. The amount they give you is super generous and my girlfriend and I didn't even finish it. It is a bit on the pricier end though. I think it was almost 8 dollars. A steep price but not terrible for the amount and the flavor. My girlfriend got the burrito fajitas (one chicken, one steak) and they were pretty dang good. They were packed with meat but the tortilla was a bit soggy for our liking. The rice was great when cheese dip was added to it! The beans though, were probably the worst part of the entire experience. Very disappointing. They were soupy and had little to no flavor. The burrito California though, was spectacular! It had fries, beans, rice, and steak packed into a fat tortilla, served with cheese sauce, guacamole, and pico on top. I didn't know how fries would be in such a Mexican dish but boy did that flavor stand out. It wasn't super bready either because of the insane amount of steak inside of it. The portion was incredible. It did get a little dry because of how much was actually inside of it, so added cheese sauce is necessary in my opinion. The guacamole on top was okay, nothing to be crazy about and the pico was nonexistent after maybe two bites. Overall, I would definitely come back to Plaza Azteca but the price was a little hefty for my liking. The food and service is good, don't get me wrong, but the price was a lot more for not that big of a difference in quality to its competitors in the area. I wrote a much longer review of the location on West Broad. This location is newer and the staff is super nice. Our waiter kept calling us amigos and I replied in Spanish. My 3 amigos dusted their plates so I guess they liked the food. I wiped my plate clean so I don't really have any complaints. Have I had better? Of course. I'm a first generation Mexican-American from southern California. Does this place satisfy the crave for Mexican food? Yes, yes it does. Fellow Yelpers have said the food quality is on the decline at this location. They also say the West Broad location puts out better food. I think they're right to be honest. While I felt the food was decent it wasn't 4 stars like I rated the West Broad location. However, decent Mexican food at Plaza Azteca is still vastly superior to that mierda they serve at Mexico Restaurant. $0.02 read more

I feel like this is a pretty solid choice for a Mexican restaurant. I prefer to come during lunch time because I enjoyed my food better than my last visit. I was excited to order empanadas as I had been craving them for a while, but unfortunately they were just okay not great. The salsa and chips always seem fresh. My mom ordered enchiladas which are normally a go to however she wasn't a fan of the green sauce. My dad order a burrito and seemed to think it was just okay as well. The happy hour specials are decent! We got the frozen house margaritas. All in all okay trip, but I prefer lunch versus dinner. read more
