Rather secluded and completely empty when I went there at around 6pm mid August Friday evening. I believe there are 2 areas for a small picnic and grill as well. Make your way up the wooden walkway and in a minute you get to the ocean, beach wide open for you after taking the steps down. There are shells everywhere washed up on shore and tiny little crabs burying into the sand. Only been there once but the waves were rather large that day, not good for kids. Could be different on other days, but were far stronger than at the Pier on emerald Isle.

I enjoy the outdoor showers as we can get showered off and clean off our equipment after coming in from the ocean before getting back into the car. The walk to the ocean is a dream across a well built and properly maintained wooden walkway. It cuts directly through myrtle and yaupon stands so you can see inside that incredibly interesting biome. It is a unique and wonderful experience for birdwatchers and artists. The walkway continues to rise above the dunes and the view of how a barrier looks in pristine state is received. Wonderful! The walkway continues down to the beach. There are stairs that lead down to the shore. Though it is difficult getting a wheelchair down there is a small deck at the top where, with umbrellas or other means, the view and breezes could be enjoyed. The beach itself is a great place to visit. The waters are clear. There is no lifeguard here so all caution should be taken. Riptides and occasional sharks occur here. At high tide the two 'shelves' that are close in will be obscured, so be careful. During turtle breeding season there may be nests near this location. I love to observe them even if I am not there during hatching. Shorebirds sometimes abound and porpoises, dolphins and even whales may be seen!

Our guides, Frank and Lynn, have really done their homework when it comes to providing interesting background of the lovely historic homes on the stroll. They sprinkle the tour with stories of the intriguing people who lived in the charming homes so very long ago. Frank and Lynn are also well-versed regarding The Old Burying Grounds. I highly recommend this tour!

But that is about it for the good. Now for the bad. Their wifi is spotty at best, i believe this is due to the proximity to the radar at Cherry Point Air Station. But also i had extremely poor cell phone communications the entire time at Dogwood, and on Christmas day i had to leave my camper, leave the campground and go down the road closer to newport to be able to have a cell call with my daughter. Also i have cancer and find out that my doctors have been calling me but i was not receiving cell calls. I have AT&T as my carrier, but i went into the office to complain and they said they are aware of the problem, with only saying try wifi calling. Also if the internet is key to ur stay, they have a firewall setup that rejects websites and even google searches, so if internet, wifi, and cell reception are important to u, then stay away from Dogwood. Also the location is by a curve n people go really fast there so pulling out onto lake road can be challenging and dangerous. Next the garbage dumpster is at the back of the campground, n not really walking distance. Finally there is no bath house on the campground which was a shock as almist all campgrounds have their own bathroom house. This affected myself as my shower in my rv was not working. So all in all i was very disappointed.

Yes, he will be barefoot on the tour. He picked me up at the Inlet Inn, so that was very convenient, and took me around the area, sharing fun historical facts along the way. I learned about the previous names of the town, the Sandwich House, some of the people buried at the Old Burying Ground, Blackbeard's House, aka The Hammock House, and so much more. I enjoy architecture, so I enjoyed seeing the older houses. The Duncan House was one of those houses, so it is heartbreaking that so much history was lost in the recent fire. The golf cart was comfortable. It was much nicer than those I've seen before, and it was a great and fun way to see downtown. The price was very reasonable for my private tour. I expected to pay at least double. It was well worth it. Wade was welcoming, friendly and seemed to enjoy giving tours and sharing the town's history. I think he knows everyone in town, too! We didn't see any of the wild horses, but did see some dolphins. I had no idea there were dolphins in the area. So that was a real highlight as it was unexpected. I will take another tour when I am back in the area to learn of some other aspects of Beaufort.
