(I'd like to see a bit more lighting near the game shelves, but I have old eyes.) There were even some dioramas in the center of the store. There's plenty of parking outside. They have a nice variety of games open which you can play, as well as comfortable seating and clean rest rooms. In the gaming area, I saw more packaged "complete sets" of the games with numerous expansion sets, something I personally find preferable to lots and lots and lots of space devoted to expansion sets. I only wish they opened a little earlier in the day on weekdays.

One of the things that makes Northampton, well, Northampton, is Essentials. I started shopping at…read moreEssentials almost twenty years ago, and it's been a staple of my quirky life ever since. It's changed hands twice in my awareness, and just keeps getting better and better with age. This is a design-focused, design-heavy shop, and there are things I can pretty much only get AT Essentials; for instance, they've got a cut-to-custom-length ribbon bar, and some of that ribbon is vintage, and my absolute favorite is the hand-dyed silk. Also, they've got the best collection of Tintin and other European character favorites (like Barbapapa and Babar) this side of the pond. Oh, and the staff is wonderful. Knowledgable, friendly, thoughtful, and creative. Over the years, the cast of characters has changed, but it's always top-shelf. One giant boon: they've helped me put together a gift in no time, saving my bacon on numerous occasions! On a typical day, you can find stationery of all kinds, the indier the better; dishware; rubber stamps; intriguing books (think Chronicle); bath goods; bags of all shapes, sizes, and purposes; clothes and scarves; eight million things for kids, from blankies to onesies to stuffed alligators; jewelry; small home goods; special pens; DIY kits; custom furniture; large sheets of beautiful artisan paper; and a ton of things I'm forgetting. And one other thing about Essentials I am not forgetting, but which I saved for last, because it's my favorite. Essentials has an in-house design and print studio. And they also work with a select group of indie designers and printers who create everything from business cards to party invites. Here is where Colette, the current owner, really freaking shines, in my opinion. There was one thing I wanted when it came time to get married. One. Thing. That one thing was letterpress wedding invitations from Essentials. Colette took us from beautiful nebulous idea to flawlessly-executed product without ever breaking a sweat. I don't know if you've ever worked with people who are about to get married, but we are not always the most poised, cool-headed, or unflappable of people; Colette sat us down in the big comfy chairs and made sketches and phone calls, and really made our family feel like we were the only people in the entire world. Go see what I'm talking about - our invitation is probably still hanging in its golden-framed, green-paper-backed glory. Nearly four thousand miles away now, and I'm still bouncing in my chair as I look forward to my next trip to Essentials, whenever it may be.

Even then, no one acknowledged me or came over to ask if I needed assistance. After standing there with no response, I wandered around the store hoping someone might check in. Only one person said hello, and I couldn't even tell if they worked there because they had no badge or uniform. Meanwhile, there were about six people gathered around a table setting up a Warhammer game, complete with miniatures, terrain, and buildings. They were laughing, joking, and clearly enjoying themselves. Could one of them have been an employee ? Who knows!? I don't mind people having fun at work, and I understand they probably all knew each other well. But you'd think at least one of them would have noticed a new customer walking around the store looking a little lost. Not a single person broke away from the group to ask if I needed help or even acknowledge that I was there. What makes it more disappointing is that I genuinely try to support local businesses instead of just ordering everything on Amazon. I'd much rather walk into a store, make a connection, and support a local community space. But this visit made it clear that this particular store didn't seem to care about welcoming new customers or earning that kind of loyalty.

I bought majority of my boyfriends big presents here considering he is a video game collector and I know they have a WIDE variety, especially in horror games which is my boyfriends favorite genre. I was worried going into the store that because I was a girl that I would not get as much help (which happens at a lot of retro video game stores unfortunately), but they were so helpful and made sure to give me prices for everything and search for any game I was looking for. They actually gave me a super good deal on my stuff, I got a Dreamcast keyboard in box for $60, Parasite Eve CIB for $70, and Parasite Eve 2 CIB for $90. These prices were lower than average ESPECIALLY for the amazing condition they were in; barely any scratches on the discs whatsoever, bonus discs and manuals included, and both cases in great shape. The person who helped me (I don't know his name unfortunately, all I know is he is asian and has glasses, in his early 20's) made sure to give me the best looking case and best looking discs from the other Parasite Eve's he had there and swapped them into each one I was buying, he was an absolute real one. I spent $220 in total and it would have been a bit more if he had not offered to do a bundle offer :D
