I had never heard of playa bowls (the franchise) until this location opened. We've been here several times since it's opened and the bowls have been pretty consistent. We like to try their seasonal bowls but our favorite thing is that they let you mix bases. So I like to get mango and acai based when I can't decide what I want. The consistency of the base tends to depend on what base you pick, some seem to be more firm, which I prefer. I like the granola they use and that there are options that have sweeter toppings like Nutella or not as sweet like coconut flakes. We've ordered using the app/online and it's usually good, sometimes it's slower when they're busy. But I appreciate that once they've finished making the bowls, they'll store them in the fridge until pick up, so they don't melt! As a Playa Bowls loyalist, I was stoked to see one opening up in Navy Yard! Today was the grand opening and the first 50 people got a free bowl and shirt! Of course, I was 51st in line (sigh) so no goodies for me but I still supported with a half mango/ half pitaya bowl. I didn't spent too much time inside due to the immense amount of opening day traffic but it's bright and cheery with different seating options available. The staff was super nice and helpful! I come to Playa Bowl only because there is no South Block anywhere close to this neighborhood, but if there was I would drop this place in a heartbeat. Playa Bowl is just alright. It has a very expansive menu with a variety of bases for each bowl (green base, mango base, açaí base, etc.). I do really like their homemade granola, I've actually considered buying a bag to use at home. However, my biggest gripe with Playa Bowl is their bowls don't taste fresh and always have that icy taste, like it was left in the freezer for days before someone realized it was there and tried to bring it out to thaw and eat it. While South Block and Toastique make each bowl fresh, Playa Bowl pre-makes their bases and freeze them, hence the icy, almost frostbitten taste. My last encounter may have put the nail in the coffin for me ever coming here again. I usually go in the morning but this last time I went later in the evening, placed my order (an açaí, add protein) and waited. When I received my bowl, there was granola at the bottom and clumps of protein visible throughout the whole bowl. Apparently, they hand mix the protein in and the base was so frozen that the staff member couldn't mix it in well. She re-mixed it, but the bowl was so unappetizing, I tried to eat it but I couldn't finish it. I think that put me off coming here again. read more

I have a severe tree nut allergy (specifically cashews) and I am aware they say they cannot guarantee cross contamination. I have ordered from this location several times and never had problems. Yesterday I ordered a Green smoothie, which does not contain any ingredients I am specifically allergic to, and left a note about my cashew allergy. After taking 1 sip ONLY of the smoothie, I started having an allergic reaction- which I now fully believe is due to the worker not rinsing the blender and taking proper precaution. I will now not be a customer anymore due to the negligence of my request and recommend any other consumers with food allergies to just stay away. There was also a blue juice sample at the register with Spirulina that was sooo good. For my post workout smoothie, I got the Booster with vanilla plant-based protein. I just came from this location, a young employee was making a drink to serve to someone, while making the drank I saw him lick the inside of the whip-cream container. He also used a spoon to scoop out the mango base, upon observing him after he licked the whip-cream container he then proceeded to lick the spoon and dipped it back in the larger container of mango base. I told the person who seemed like he was the only adult working at the time. He asked the young man and of course the young man said no. They bushed it off, I would not eat this location until they check their safety and sanitary conditions. I am very loyal customer at playa bowls. It seems as when I come in every Friday and Saturday it's always inconsistent. On Friday it's an always an employee on the line by themselves struggling, when I ask them where's the manager they point in the other direction and say "oh she's over there". The manger whose name I've learned is named Juanita she always has a bad attitude it seems and when I ask her a question it always seems as I'm a bother to her. However when I come in on saturdays the service is always nice thanks to employees like Shayla and Tessa who always make sure I have the best service. Manager definitely needs a lot of work for the sake of Playa bowls. Management definitely needs retraining and have a more professional appearance, attitude and overall service. read more

Kimarie and Malaia are super great and friendly I noticed the prices are pretty steep and asked if they received a free bowl when working. I was shocked to know they only receive a 50 percent discount. As a manager and previous manager of a health food spot myself I think it is extremely heartbreaking to hear while you are trying to promote better health you aren't even able to offer you employees a free item while working. I'm sure they don't receive more than 20-25 dollars an hour. It would only be the right thing to do to at the very least take care of your employees. Their customer service is quite disappointing. It was a 100-degree morning today, and I stopped by to grab an acai bowl for the first time there. After waiting for my order, I simply asked for a cup of water after having paid. When the cashier went to go grab a cup for me, her manager then told her that they couldn't provide free water and that I would have to pay for it. I just wanted a cup of cold tap water, given it was so hot outside, and I already purchased food. However, they ultimately refused to give me the water. It was very disappointing, and I will not be returning as the acai bowl itself was overly sweet and just not that satisfying ultimately.
