If I'm being honest, I tend to avoid chains like the plague, but we needed a healthy-ish bite to eat and to kill a little time in the area, and Playa Bowls was right there. I'd never been in one, but it was bright, colorful, and clean. All in all, it was a solid experience. My green smoothie was what I was looking for at not too terrible a price point, and the nice lady behind the counter didn't just serve it up with a smile, she also let me use their bathroom, which was out of order (not sure what was wrong with it, but they had it closed for customers that weren't me). I got the pink power bowl which is a pitaya base with protein powder. I've never had pitaya before but it is definitely less strong of a flavor as acai. The bowl was $15. Stopped in for a quick coffee. They only have cold brew, no hot coffee. They do have a choice of milks, including oat, and sweeteners, which I normally avoid, but I was tired. I chose raw sugar. Service was friendly and quick, and the inside was very clean and bright. The music was a bit too loud. The coffee was very good, but there was MUCH more ice than actual coffee in a 20-oz cup that cost over $7.00. Definitely not a good value. I did feel let down, and was still thirsty when the coffee was gone (maybe 8 or 9 sips? Didn't count, but not a lot). Apparently the bowls are the real draw here. Came here for an early breakfast. Staff was busy but took our order promptly. Not much emotion or friendliness to the employees but not rude either. I just wish I felt a bit more welcome when I was there. The fruit is fresh but the peanut butter tasted like the kind you put on ice cream & not a healthier one that you think you would get with fruit. As much as I enjoy their bowls, the experience at this Playa Bowls location is the definition of a mixed bag. Sometimes the staff are friendly, sometimes they're not. Sometimes they get my order right, sometimes they don't. But the reason I sat down to write this review: no matter how many times I ask, explain, describe, that I want the extra peanut butter I paid for on the *bottom*, I just get met with blank stares. I feel like this should be a basic, standard ask that they encounter, but apparently not. Again, I like the açaí bowls and cold brew here, I will keep coming back until a better competitor appears. Playa is just okay for me. It's solid, I was a repeat customer during my few days at a nearby hotel in NYC. A very solid choice for a healthy and quick meal. 3.5 stars but since I went there so much, I bumped it up. Food: I love a good bowl and oatmeal and tried a few. Apple turn up oatmeal special was mediocre, and the apple butter was missing. Electric mermaid was good and filling, though kiwi was a little too hard. Green power bowl was okay and also filling. Love that they can do gluten free and dairy free easily, including GF granola, and that everything is fresh and freshly made. Service: It's okay. No complaints from direct experience. I did hear the manager had a not so nice exchange with his employee when he checked on allergy info as requested by a customer, so didn't love that. Frontline staff were always pleasant. Ambiance: Cute and kitschy! Plenty of space to wait for my to go orders, but I wouldn't mind eating there as well. Note that the music is a little loud (and catchy) for eating in. Haven't had a solid açaí bowl since moving to NYC but that's definitely not the case anymore after trying Playa Bowls! This location is brand new and I came during their grand opening. They have a wide amount of bowls on their menu with a variety of bases to choose from. I went with their pura vida bowl which is a açaí base with granola, strawberries, blueberries, and agave. First off, there were so many strawberries and blueberries on the bowl and they were SO FRESH. Literally looked like they were just hand picked. The granola has a unique homemade taste to it and adds such a nice crunch to every bite. As for the açaí, it was refreshing and did not disappoint!
