If you are looking for a truly unique trail riding experience, you should absolutely visit Platte Ranch!! As an experienced rider, I was looking for a trail ride that would not be the stereotypical nose-to-tail walking trail ride that is so commonly offered, and this trail ride did not disappoint! We were able to ride in a pack, side-by-side each other. We rode from the ranch, out through a pasture, and up a hillside to the top of the butte. On the butte, they let us experienced riders do more than walk on our horses. Amy, Josh, and Josh were so warm and welcoming and shared some history about the area. Fantastic tour guides, and amazing humans. My friend and I were visiting Colorado for about a week, and Amy gave us some recommendations of additional things to do/see while we were in the area, as well. Next time I make it back to Colorado, I would absolutely go back and visit Platte Ranch again. I cannot say enough good things about this amazing place. I have been riding most of my life and usually do not get excited about your typical nose-to-tail trail ride. But I still enjoy horses and being out in nature so much that I try to go when we are on vacation just for fun. This place is anything but a nose-to-tail trail ride. The horses were all fantastic, the wranglers were very friendly, very informative, and amazing at their job, and the scenery was breathtaking. I would almost go back to Colorado for another vacation just to go riding here again. I cannot recommend it enough!!! Not only was the ride amazing, and the scenery too, but our trail guides were the very best. They engaged with each one individually, tried to learn a little about each of us and made sure everyone was having a good time, that we were all comfortable, and they let us know several times to just ask if there was anything we needed. We had the best experience at Platte Ranch! We rode a beautiful trail around the property with great views the whole time. Amy, Mike, and Josh were very friendly and knowledgeable. They made us feel comfortable on our horses and they shared tons of interesting facts about the history of the area and local wildlife. You can tell that they really care about the land and they have a special connection with their horses. The property is easy to find and easily accessible from Summit County or even the Denver Area. I took my friend visiting from Los Angeles out for something fun to do in the mountains while she was here for a few days. We were so glad that we did a 2 hour ride tour with Platte Ranch Double B Riding Stable. They knew exactly which horse would be best suitable for each of us and their horse are all well trained. I love that we trotted and galloped on a plateau where there is a beautiful scenery with snow capped mountains. Our guides were Tigger and Wendy. They are fun and lovely. This is the best money I have ever spent. I had such a great time here I would highly recommend. It is $80 for a 2 hour ride through the land and up a hill onto a plateau where they let you go as fast or slow as you'd like which is really different from other places. The guides are so wonderful and down to earth and the horses were very well trained. The staff also brought their dogs along on the ride and they just ran around having the time of their lives. During winter they offer one ride per day at 11 am. Amazing experience I would highly recommend if you are anywhere close to this ranch to book a ride. read more

Looking for something to do in the Fairplay, Co area? We would recommend Platte Ranch Riding Stables. We chose to go on the dinner ride. We had a nice two hour ride on some very well behaved horses with some very competent wrangles. The scenery was Colorado out and out. The riding was very relaxing. We rode as a group and mingled about with each other at the pleasure of the rider or the horse. No lines here. If you want to break from the group and run with the wind in your face the wranglers would take you out from the group and let you do that. I would not hesitate to take children riding here. The dinner was very good. Steak, chicken, baked beans, potatoes, and desert cooked and served in an open air style setting. Portions are cowboy size, eat to your hearts content. Platte Ranch will not disappoint. read more

Hands Down the highlight of our trip to Breckenridge. The drive alone is worth it. Platte Ranch was recommended to us by Paragon Lodging. I hadn't even considered riding as part of our trip, but she got me when she said open ranch riding, not head to tail stuff. After a bit of research (all five star reviews btw) we booked and afternoon two hour ride. Amy was super friendly and accommodating. We had a group of five (including my 84 year old grandfather) They sized each of us up and assigned us horses accordingly. Horses were clean, in great condition, and had great dispositions. We were given THREE guides for our five people! Could have been the nice day, or they were terrified of us tenderfeet, but either way 3 to 5 ratio makes it all pretty safe going. There is nothing to say about the surroundings except hallelujah. Even naturalists of years will be bowled over by the expanses of land and big sky that await. We went through a "stunted forest" full of miniature trees due to a water table anomaly. There were gnarled dead roots everywhere with life still growing out of them. Eerie and cool. When you get to the top of the plateau you can see many 14k foot peaks including Pike's Peak. They give you a chance to open up your horses here if you wish as well. Josh, Sean, and Dennis were fantastic guides, each with their own strengths. Never made us city slickers feel inferior or goofy for our poor form. Run, dont walk to do this. Old and young alike will LOVE it. read more

These guys FAR exceeded our expectations! Don't even consider riding anyplace else! We took our family of five while in Breckenridge for the week. Rode with another family of three. For 8 of us, we had 8 guides! My 6 yr old daughter was allowed to ride her own horse. None of us are experienced riders and all came away saying how comfortable they made us feel. Guides were always close enough to offer input and assistance (if needed) on controlling our horses. We were encouraged to "spread out" and get the horses off the trail. That was a nice plus. We got to run our horses on the high plain we came to. That was AMAZING! The views were heavenly! Guides were knowledgable, friendly, and helpful. Horses were all calm and controllable. I can't say enough good things about this experience. We are DEFINITELY making time to go back on future trips. We rode with Sean, Amy, Wendy, and Josh, et al. read more

My partner and I did a private ride back in September 2022 to see the fall colors. It was absolutely the best trail ride either of us have been on! I rode Bella and she was an amazing combination. Because both he and I have ridden before, we were able to move above a walk and actually trot, canter, gallop where the footing allowed. It was great to not be stuck in a nose-to-tail trail ride with a ton of people. The scenery was beautiful and our guide was amazing, fun and easy to talk to, and educational about the land. I'm not awesome with names but I wish I remembered hers! Her dogs also came along and it was so great to see how happy they were to run alongside and explore with the horses. Our goal is to come back for a winter ride sometime. Winter or otherwise, we will definitely be back! read more

This was the highlight of our trip to Colorado! Our guide was friendly and helpful, and helped us get settled and comfortable with our horse. He even set our horses together and took some souvenir pictures for us. We got to ride through some trees, up a hill, let the horses trot and even gallop around a bit, and across some water; it was a fun experience. This was a solid 2 hour ride and at the end of it, we got some treats to feed the horses. I definitely recommend it for new riders. read more

Platte Ranch is a must do! The staff here is so friendly and really take care of their guests. My mother was beyond nervous/scared to ride a horse, but they didn't pressure her and gave her a gentle horse that usually carries children. Mike also stayed back with her to watch over her. She ended up really enjoying the ride. The scenery around the ranch is breathtaking. They take you up to a enormous field to take pictures and allow you to go fast, "into second gear", if you desire. What is more picturesque than horseback riding through snow, creeks, and mountains? Absolutely nothing, if you're at this ranch! My wife and I signed up for a two hour ride. No one else was there so we had the ride to ourselves with two excellent guides, Tigger and Joshua. Also along for the ride was Joshua's Dog, Gunner. Gunner was just as entertaining as the horses and guides! Our guides took us through beautiful parts of the ranch, allowing us the freedom to ride to our skill level. While the horses will ride nose to tail, simple adjustments and they will safely go side by side. The guides give background information on the ranch as well as history of the towns. We've spent the week skiing, getting massages, ice skating, all the tourist things. Then we did this. Hands down, best part of our trip! When searching for riding stables for our group of 5 arriving in early November we found that most stables in the area had closed for the season. One of them referred us to Platte Ranch as the only one still open and actively doing rides. With no website we were a little unsure if it would be a good fit. Until we started reading reviews on Trip Advisor & Yelp...then there was no question this was the place for us (and not just because they were the only place open!). While sometimes reviews can leave you set up for a disappointment, these reviews were dead on regarding the staff and overall experience. Amy (the owner) runs a great operation and did a fantastic job at pairing our group with horses of similar personality. She & Sean (one of her guides) led us through the snowy mountainside and encouraged us to really learn to understand and communicate with our horses. They welcomed us going "off the path" and included lots of trivia about the area (the South Park writers are from there!), fun facts about the horses (they often act like teenagers!) and really engaged us in conversations about ourselves, our lives back home and were really open about their lives. Our group all agreed that they now feel like family and we can't wait to go back. Was my first time ever ... nevertheless I felt so very at ease. I felt an immense peacefulness as Josh brought Ferris over to me, introduced us, and gave me instructions. Wendy and Kelsey also were terrific guides with great knowledge, humor and an easy-going manner. The vistas were all breathtaking. We road up to the South Park Plateau in 3-4 feet of snow (am told this was historic snow) with a group of others -- but never once felt nervous, fearful, or bored. This was a great experience for me. I used to ride horses quite often and since moving to CO I haven't. My husband and I had a very bad experience before at riding stables out here, so I have been a little reluctant to do it again. But I'm very glad my dad arranged to do this when they were out. The guides were great, very knowledgeable of their horses and the land we rode on. The horses are all somewhat older and very experienced as well. I felt completely comfortable from the get go. The ride was beautiful. Since I have experience riding I was able to run my horse for miles on the open range. It was amazing. The dinner that followed was delicious as well. Great times with 4 girlfriends for a bachelorette. Great guide-to-rider ratio and you can't beat the scenery!!! We had a gorgeous 75 degree day and got 360 degree views up on the ridge with our horses. $70 for a solid two hours+. A wonderful time. Biggest complaint is that we couldn't find the place. No address is marked anywhere since they have no website and Yelp and TripAdvisor just notes the town it's located in. For future reference, it's by mile marker 58 on Highway 9. read more

WOW! One of the best trail rides I've ever been on - not your typical nose-to-tail ride! I was on a family vacation last week in Breckenridge and visited the Platte Ranch & Double B Riding Stables with my sister in law and aunt. It was the best experience of my week-long vacation! Amy was so accomodating - we had tried to book the ride through a booking agency, but were told that they didn't have any availability. When we called Amy directly, she was happy to fit us in on their 11am ride. As a horse person, the care of the animals is just as important, if not moreso, to me than the quality of the ride itself. In this case, I saw horses that were happy, healthy, and impeccably cared for. They LOVE their jobs, which makes for a more pleasant ride, even for someone with little to no experience. Our ride was fantastic. We opted for the 2-hour ride, which ended up being more like 2.5 hours after all was said and done. The staff took time and care to match each of us up with a horse that would be suitable for our stature and our experience level, and having 3 guides along with the group of about 10 for the ride assured safety and a personalized experience for everyone. We LOVE Platte Ranch and try make a point of visiting every time we're in Breck. We've ridden here at least five times over the past ten years, and every ride is even more spectacular than the time before. We were truly blessed with having the opportunity of riding with Bill Berger the first time we visited Platte Ranch. Bill is a gentle man who is very passionate about his horses as well as the guests that visit his stable. Sadly, Bill passed in 2008, but he has a special place in our hearts. Visiting Platte Ranch gives us an opportunity to pay our respects, to reconnect with him and lets us take in the beauty that mother nature has shared with us. Alphabet took us out this time. She was awesome AND very hard working!! Amy (Bill's daughter) took us out the last time we visited. Oliver (the Poodle) and Baxter (the Lab) accompanied us on our ride. The dogs love going out on the rides! They will assess your ability and pair you accordingly with the right horse. The horses are clean and very well taken care of. Hubby's hose was Tonka and I had Olo. There is no nose-to-tail riding here (except when ascending or descending the steep trails). Other than that, he horses are pretty much on auto pilot, but you are free to spread out, run your horse or ride side by side if you like. We cannot recommend this place enough! You know how when you eat something that is so fantastic, you remember it and then try to find something that tastes even better, but it just doesn't quite live up to that fantastic thing? Just like in that example, this is the stable that we compare all our rides to. We've been on other rides and have not been able to find anything that even comes close to this. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time with any other stable. We took our friends out on a ride for their first time several years ago, and they did just fine. We had an amazing ride! We almost rode with American Safari but were so turned off by the rudeness of Stanley that we cancelled and rescheduled with Double B and were so glad we did. JJ and Kody were our guides. They were sweet, energetic and willing to make the ride just right for each rider. Both JJ and Kody were excellent with the three children on our ride. The 2 hour ride took us through the enormous ranch up to a plateau where we took pictures and were able to trot, canter, or lope. We finished the ride by riding down the mountains and across the river. If you want to explore the Colorado mountains on horseback and aren' t wanting a typical nose to tail ride, then this is the place to go! This is a great ride for all levels of riders. Great staff, wonderful horses. They picked the perfect animals for each family member. They told me my horse would behave, but give other horses the stink-eye, and he sure did! LOL. My 12 and 9 years olds loved it. Only hitch was, we got caught in a downpour and temps dropped! We didn't plan properly for that, but the guides took us back down the mountain into some tree cover. We took some rough elk trails back through the woods (not the normal route) and that was interesting. read more
