I cannot recommend this place enough!! We had the BEST time! The best part is that the ride is not a "nose to tail" ride, instead they teach you how to steer your horse and encourage you to spread out and find your own path! We did a 2 hour private ride with a group of 12 and it was amaaaazing! The aspen groves are beautiful and the view from the top is awesome! All of the beauty without the work of hiking to the top. We also bought the cowboy hats that they sold for $30 in their store, and it brought the photos to the next level! Our guides were so kind and knowledgeable!! The horses were sweet and so so we'll trained - those horses live the best life! Such a fabulous place. My friend and I booked the 3 hour horseback ride when we were vacationing in Colorado. I had ZERO horseback riding experience and was shocked at how much freedom they give new riders. We had a 5-10 minute huddle where we set expectations and went over basic commands, but then we were essentially free to ride! We stayed as a group, but rather than stay in a single file line, they really give you the freedom to go where you please. The ranch was beautiful, our guide was lovely, and every staff person we interacted with was so kind. If you don't have cash, they also let you leave a tip via credit card or venmo (depending on the guide), which was so helpful! Only other suggestion... bring bug spray and sunscreen! read more

Cattle Drive, do it!!! I've always wanted to do something a little more than a trail ride, not following head to butt in a line and the cattle drive is the perfect excursion. They make sure you are comfortable on the horse, give you tips and clear instructions on what to do. As long as you are in control, you definitely have the freedom to navigate and ride along as you want. We herded up cattle and moved them all towards the watering area and then back out to the feeding area. I loved the freedom to make my own choices with the horse and go as slow or fast as I wanted, there was definitely some trotting! Our guides were awesome, the horses were great. I had the best time and highly recommend if you're looking for an out of the box horseback riding experience! (Bring lots of bug spray, the mosquitoes were out!) read more

We live locally and take all of our out-of-town guests to Rusty Spurr. It's amazing to ride in the middle of nowhere, up hills and through aspen groves. From the moment I arrived, I was warmly welcomed by Connie and dear Kit the dog. I was part of a small party of 3, led expertly by Jonah. Instead of being asked to ride nose to tail, we were invited to spread out, to enjoy the magnificent vistas. The aspen groves are truly magical. Connie was a sweetheart signing me in and getting everything squared away, and John was the man! I couldn't have picked a kinder, more caring, soul to lead a trail ride. He was super knowledge about the ranch and was great at giving instructions and urging everyone to forge their own paths. Side note - I visited alone and thought it was kind that John asked for me phone to snap a few photos of me on my horse with the mountains in view. Nobody in our family had ever ridden a horse before, so we were nervous about the ride and opted to wear helmets just in case, but there really wasn't anything to be afraid of. The horses were all very tame, and were so accustomed to the leisurely stroll through the mountains that they didn't need much kicking and reining to get them going in the right direction - for the most part they just followed in a line behind the guide's lead horse. The weather in the mountains changes pretty quickly, and we were grateful that they provided raincoats when the cold rain started blowing in. The guide made sure we were comfortable, and when the sun came back out again he was happy to go around and gather up everyone's jackets. Make sure you add about fifteen minutes to your drive time if you're mapping it with your phone, since the address for the ranch on the mapping apps says you have arrived when you're really just at the beginning of the twisting 4.5-mile gravel road. Fair warning - you may be saddle-sore after the two-hour ride. read more

Regardless of where you're from or your skill level, this ranch has brainstormed every aspect of a customers ride and they cannot be beat. My wife and I went on the 3-4 hour trail ride today. I thought it was going to be like a theme park basic trail, nope! They had us climbing the mountain sides with views that cannot be beat. On top of that, they don't require you to stay in trail, blaze your own within ear shot of the guide. For these ranchers, it was all about the fun. But even better you can tell their love for their animals. They point out the ethical ways they stable, feed, and work their horses as to give them ample rest and care. It showed 100% in the temperament of the horses and how well they respond. This was an unforgettable experience for us and the highlight of our trip. i visited here with my mom and my sister, and we did the one hour trail ride! everyone here was so, so sweet--it had been raining when we arrived and the owners had been incredibly understanding if we were at all uncomfortable with the weather. we waited until conditions were safe again and it was so worth it!! our trail guide was so kind and made sure that everyone was comfortable. their horses were very calm and overall lovely. the trails/property is beautiful and us riders were able to explore our own paths a little while we were out. all in all, i would absolutely recommend their business and i hope to be able to visit again in the future :)) read more

This review is a week late, so I apologize for my tardiness. This is the second horseback-riding trail I've done in Colorado (4th or 5th I've done in my life), and so far, my favorite! We did the 2-hour trail ride in late September, which happened to be the perfect time of year to go. You ride through several aspen tree groves and the leaves were absolutely stunning. I rode Butch, who was such a dapper gentleman--a bit naughty when I was taking photos, sneaking a bite of sage while I wasn't paying attention, but an absolute joy! Whether you have experience with horses or not, this trail ride will be perfect for you. There is no trotting or quick riding, the horses are not encouraged to go past a walk so if you're uneasy, don't worry, your guide will be there the whole time and only one horse in our group of 8 attempted to trot but her rider reined her in quickly and she stopped. I have some experience riding and being around horses so I know how sassy and persistent they can be, but these horses had a great temperament and while they like to stop and snatch a bite to eat (which isn't allowed because they're working), just be consistent and stern with them and they'll focus on the walk. I can easily say these horses had the best temperament I've seen on trail-riding horses; they're all very docile and happy. This is also the first ever trail ride I've done that allowed and encouraged riders to ride side-by side and not keep them restricted to a straight line. I never really minded being told to stay in a straight line on trail rides, but now that I've had the freedom of a more communal ride where you can actually converse with your friends, I feel like I'll hate being restricted to a straight line lol. Our guide was one of the owners and she was incredible! She told us all about the area and all about our horses that we were on this journey with. Not only was our guide amazing, the entire staff was so kind and fun to chat with. You're my girl Patti! The only downside of this stable, it's pretty far--I live in central Denver and the stable was in Kremmling. Honestly, I enjoyed this ride so much, I'll probably force my guests to journey the 2 - 2.5 hour drive just for the experience--particularly if it's in the fall. It's rare to feel content with the amount of golden leaves I've seen in the fall, but after that ride, I somehow feel like I have my aspen tree fill for the year. Trust me, it's worth it! Some might also say a downside is that the only bathroom is a porter potty, however it's the nicest and cleanest potter potty I've ever seen so I don't consider it a downside at all--It's a ranch, don't be boojie. I strongly recommend this experience, it might be a bit far, but the drive is beautiful, the ride is great and the staff is amazing. Driving tip: If your maps tell you to take a road called "County/Country Line 385" ignore this direction and drive past that road--it'll auto route you to the correct road. That road is a residential entrance with a "No trespassing" sign. You'll know you turned down the correct road when you see the signs for the Rusty Spurr Ranch. read more

Great Time Riding Horses at The Rusty Spurr Ranch! My girlfriend and I did a 2-hour ride in late August at the Rusty Spurr Ranch. The ranch is easy to find, just look for the sign on the side of the road. Once you hit the dirt road, follow it about 4-5 miles and you can't miss the ranch. Everyone working there was very nice and helpful. Our guide was great, took pictures for us, and led us on a beautiful ride through their 10,000 acre ranch. We were able to ride on our own, picking our own trails, following the guide. Even as a beginner, it was very easy to control the horse. The 2 hours went by really fast, we wished we had booked the 4 hour ride. Yes, I highly recommend horseback riding at the Rusty Spurr Ranch! My family and I did the cattle drive. I have experience riding and showing horses, but the rest of my family has minimal experience. The cattle drive is legit. We were totally in control of our own horses and really put to work (in a good way). Our guide, Han, is the owner of the ranch and was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. He encouraged us to ask questions and gave us detailed instructions on how to ride and how to move the cattle. The horses knew what they were doing and helped us build the confidence we needed. The views are exquisite and it was so satisfying to have a job to do and get it done. While we had an amazing time, I would not recommend this for timid riders. I have many years of experience and was definitely still challenged. In addition, the cattle drive is 4 hours long, which is the longest I've ever been in the saddle at one time. This caused us to become quite sore! I would pick a shorter ride if you have any leg injuries, etc. Overall, the cattle drive was above and beyond my expectations. I highly recommend the Rusty Spurr Ranch in general and the cattle drive for those looking for a challenge. read more

I found Rusty Spurr online and after reading a whole bunch of great reviews decided to book a trail ride for my boyfriend and I. Booking process was super easy and confirmation email they send is super comprehensive and informative. My boyfriend and I hadn't ridden a horse in over 10 years and we were both super excited. We had checked the weather beforehand and it was supposed to be cloudy and rainy but it turned out to be beautiful!! Blue skies and perfect temperature. The Rusty Spurr is not only the best riding experience I've had in Colorado, but it's the best activity I've done in Colorado period, and the best riding experience I've had anywhere. I consider myself a fair and balanced reviewer, but there's simply nothing negative to say. We did a group ride the first day, which was fantastic in itself, but we couldn't get enough and had to come back for a private ride the next day. Both experiences were incredible. Often times riding as a tourist looks little different than a chain of elephants hooked tail to trunk on a trail. The Rusty Spurr encourages you to spread out and truly enjoy the experience to its fullest. I attribute this largely to the trust and time they have into their horses as owners and staff. Regardless of your skill level, they've got a horse for you, and there were no surprises with their behavior in any way. With the Rusty Spurr, you're dealing with people that both care for their animals and care about investing their time in each horse to ensure you have the absolute best experience possible. We stayed in Breckenridge, and the drive to the Rusty Spurr was very enjoyable. It lets you see the true character of Colorado, besides just ski resorts and tourist destinations. If you're anywhere close, you've got to go for a ride at the Rusty Spurr. We're already planning for when we can go back next year. read more

Ah horseback riding. Not exactly high up there on my favorite things to do list. I had an awful experience at a different horseback riding place that resulted in me walking the horse back to the stable. So when my wife and mom insisted on going riding on a recent trip to Colorado, I was more than apprehensive. Especially when the words "cattle driving" were thrown into the equation... We set off bright and early into the mountains to make the 8:30am meeting time at the ranch. Turning off of Highway 9, we drove for miles into the remote mountain plains. The view was so spectacular, my initial hesitations started to loosen up a bit. We were in the middle of seemingly nowhere, with no one in sight. Having just left NYC, that was a welcome change. We arrived at the ranch to discover we were the only ones doing the cattle drive that day. As such, this felt like a super exclusive private ride! Awesome. We checked in with Connie on arrival and immediately I knew that this would be a very different experience than what I went through the first time (I kid you not, that first time involved a guy who showed up with a shotgun, shot into the air, and said "grab a horse"). Connie introduced us to her husband, Han, and another guide who would be leading us on the cattle drive. They talked to us about our previous experience in horse riding (to which I said "extremely limited") and assured us we would have a great time. Upon bringing the horses out, fully saddled (something the last place expected me to do...), we mounted the horses and were given a quick lesson on the proper way to sit in the saddle and how to get the horses to do what we wanted (again, something that was expected of us in the last place, so this was VERY appreciated). We set off across the plains, and spent the next four hours chasing cows, rounding them up, chatting about our lives, and all in all having an amazing time. I had such a blast! For this being the first time ever herding cattle, we all did excellent! I would say my only gripe is that the price for the cattle drive is really steep. We were told several times that we had "a lot of work to do", and that held true! As such, it almost felt like they should've been paying us! : ) Following the ride, Connie had a lunch of chicken and burgers prepared for us. Definitely a nice needed touch after spending hours chasing cows! ___________________ First time horseback riding? Here are some warnin...tips! 1. SUNBLOCK. We highly underestimated the power of the sun at 9000ft for 4 hours. That's all I'll say on that matter. 2. Water! Bring some bottles with you for the ride. It get's really dusty riding behind 60 cows. You'll guzzle them down. 3. Stretch afterwards! Your quads will thank you! 4. Gents: Wear it tight, suffer less. I wore my triathlon shorts on this ride. Amazing experience! I have loved horseback riding all my life, but never gotten an opportunity to ride outside of such a controlled environment as an arena or trail ride. The cattle drive takes you onto the wide open sage brush plains and you are encouraged to take charge of your horse and ride where you want to, not behind the tail of the horse in front of you. It was an empowering experience and truly blissful to see nothing between me and the open plain but the ears of my horse. We had people of all skill levels on the drive with us, from those who had never sat on a horse before to some who had been riding from the time they were a child. I told them of my past experience (just a few years of lessons and some trail rides) and they paired me with Pacino, a lovely gentle buckskin. He was perfect for my skill level--my biggest fear had been being paired with a horse that was stubborn or mean like some of my lesson horses had been, but Pacino was a big sweety and very patient with me whenever I made a mistake. Bailey and Hans, the trail bosses, were excellent teachers and never left anyone feeling lost or helpless. The actual cattle drive itself was, for me, a surprisingly good time. It was great fun to work with the other participants to use our horses and direct the cattle up the ridge and through some dense aspen groves. It was an active effort on the part of the whole group to coordinate the move, and left us all feeling like we'd accomplished something by the end of it. As an added bonus, we were allowed to take all the pictures we wanted throughout the ride, and Bailey and Hans were also kind enough to snag some pictures of everyone in the group throughout the ride, so no one would leave without some photo memories to pocket. I plan to come back and do it again at the earliest opportunity. It was probably one of the best experiences I've had, and by far the most fun I've ever had on a horse! P.s. Shout out as well to Patty, the boss boss, who came to my rescue and provided me with some ibuprofen before the drive when I realized I'd left my Tylenol in the car! read more

Connie was our guide and did a wonderful job. You can easily see she loves her job, and loves showing folks how to handle their very forgiving horses. They allowed you to spread out in the open places so you weren't nose to tail. We had children and adults in our group with varied experience and we had a great time. The views were spectacular! We got plenty of sun, I would recommend sunscreen. You will also have a small saddlebag that will fit a water and your phone/ small camera. Definitely want to take the water. We also did the saddle to paddle combination that included lunch. The paddle was on a class 2 that is fine for young children. read more

Probably the funnest and most memorable thing we did while on our vacation. I have a horse of my own and am a more experienced rider and my bf has only ridden a few times but this ride was amazing for both of us. They paired us with horses that fit our ability and besides trotting or running basically let us guide the horse to our liking. The views were amazing and our guide was wonderful. These people have the right idea! They're truly passionate about what they do and why they do it. I have rode horses all my life and they horses were we'll trained and had a calm demeanor to them. We were visiting from Florida and our friend came from Denver and we couldn't stop talking about this place long after we left. I rode Maverick and my girlfriend was on a beautiful horse named Pocahontas. My friend was on a beautiful draft horse - I forget his name but a gorgeous horse. Hahn and Kelsey were amazing ranchers who showed us the land and made sure we all were comfortable throughout our cattle drive. My husband and I completed a cattle drive yesterday morning and we still can't stop talking about it. From the moment we arrived, to when we finally returned for lunch, we were treated so well by the staff. Having never done anything like this before, we were a little nervous, but they made us feel so comfortable and walked us through the entire process of what we'd be doing that day. They paired us up with the best fit horse for our experience and build, and did another equipment check (saddle, stirrups, etc.) 10 minutes into the ride. After four hours of driving cattle through the sprawling hillsides of sage brush and aspens, we had successfully drove almost 200 cattle to water and food. A bonus for us was when we had to split off and wrangle up eight heifers that had wandered away from the group down in one of the valleys. Folks! If you have not gone to see the guys and gals at Rusty Spur Ranch, you are missing out! Experienced the cattle drive today and it was nothing short of absolutely awesome. The guides were great, we got to run all over open acres of pasture via horseback. The weather was absolutely spectacular and the views were nothing short of stunning. Got done after a few hours and came back to the stables and office to devour a great lunch of burgers and some homemade potato salad. Everyone at the ranch goes out of their way to make sure you're comfortable and make sure that you got everything you need to enjoy yourself and have a good time. Would absolutely repeat, would recommend to anyone and everyone, the only thing is to make sure to bring cash to give the guides a tip.
